[Robert Schmitz] Why is it so easy to get excited about Caleb Williams’ first #Bears start? I think it’s because there were no surprises last weekend — he showed these skills in college, then translated them seamlessly to NFL action.

  1. My buddy used to play QB in college, and he says that what he sees from Williams now is better than anything he saw from Fields in the 3-4 years that he watched him, except for the Commanders game last year.

  2. Caleb Williams did give a demo of why so many scouts and analysts thought he was the most NFL-ready QB available in the 2024 draft last week. It isn’t just what he did. Leading the Bears O to two field goal drives against the starting Bills D doesn’t seem that special until you realize this is a rookie QB who’s playing at game speed for the first time.

It’s what he didn’t do. No turnovers. No major blunders. When the line collapsed he knew what to do with the ball and didn’t do anything reckless, just made a play if it was available and threw it away when it wasn’t.

He’s going to be good, possibly even great. Hopefully we are coaching him up well so he reaches that “great” status. Eventually some D will eat a 4/5-INT feast from him this season but he’s got what it takes in the long run I think.
