What Patrik Laine to the Canadiens means for the Bruins

The Montreal Canadiens took a gamble by acquiring Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it’s a smart one that shows how well run the Habs are and makes them more dangerous in the Atlantic Division.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down what Laine to the Habs means for the Bruins. For starters, it removes any possibility of the Canadiens signing Jeremy Swayman to an offer sheet. It also means the Bruins need to level up offensively to contend with all the star power in the Atlantic Division.

To that end, the Bruins are reportedly considering a PTO for Kailer Yamamoto.

  1. Correction, the Habs aren't over salary cap with that trade, they're a bit under cap. 500k free space.

Also Xhekaj's name is pronounced 'jack-eye' not 'jeh-ha' lol.

  2. Don't think the Habs are in a position to make a playoff run in 24/25 so it really shouldn't affect the Bruins at all. On paper Tampa seems to have declined. Florida looks awfully good to get out of the Atlantic.

  3. the only goalie montreal would have there eye on right now is askarov he requested a trade and is one of the top goalie prospects in the league, if not the top prospect and most bottom feeding teams will be more interested in askarov over swayman.

  4. Demidov , Hutson , Mailloux , Reinbacher , Roy , Fowler , Hage , Owen beck , Emil haineman and Sean Farell are all either really really good prospects or for some could simply push for a spot on the bottom six this year or next year .

If the injury bug doesn’t get to the habs , which is almost impossible coming from habs fan … they can really light it up with that top 6 .

Habs going for 80-90 points potentially without injuries .

    Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield
    Newhook Dach Laine
    Gallagher Dvorak Roy
    Anderson Evans Armia

I could see Newhook and Roy switching places .
    Same for Caufield and Laine
    Same for Dvorak and Evans
    Same for Armia and Gallagher

Also that power play could be lethal especially with a young lane Hutson and Patrick laine as the new additions to the habs power play …

  5. Habs fan here, we got great young players with awful goalies till Fowler gets there so we are no where near Boston but in 3 years we might compete that said it will still be a fun team to watch best of luck to Boston and the habs! Brad Marchand is my favorite player in hockey

  6. Habs have more cap space. Carey Price $10.5 mil LTIR. It's tricky. Perhaps you could explain- I can't figure out how the ltir works … not accruing cap space over the season? 🤔

Hopefully Jeremy would not be traded within the division.

Yeah I've been following Montreal very closely the past two seasons watching an original six rebuild

Atlantic division, Eastern conference will be in trouble in another 3 years.

  7. There isn’t a goalie need. Everyone is happy for now for a non competitive team with the goalies they have. Doesn’t make ANY sense to offer sheet Swayman. He’s a top goalie but Habs don’t need a top goalie until 3 years from now when they can be a contender.
