[Jfortgang] With scrambles excluded, a look at the average separation of all routes for a QB and how often QBs have thrown to a man labeled as “open”

  1. Not entirely sure what to make of this data. For starters, without knowing the sample size (by sample size I mean what % of throws have been in the pocket vs scrambling) it’s difficult to make sweeping generalizations. If anything this might be a really bad indictment of our OL than anything else, since most of passing Kyler’s TD’s this season have come off of scrambles. Kyler also has a tough time of stepping up in the pocket at times even when he does get protection, which isn’t entirely his fault but he is quick to scramble out at the first signs of trouble.

Another observation is that this could also represent a lack of quick burst speed on the WR core. MHJ is obviously fast, but as we saw last week a lot of his targets were heavily contested because of double coverage. Dortch is your typical YAC man and isn’t known for taking the tops off of defenses and Michael Wilson is more of a possession guy. McBride and Conner aren’t speedsters themselves either.
