Brenden Schaeffer discusses the first key piece of news of the Cardinals off-season as the team announced Thursday it has declined the options on Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn and Keynan Middleton for 2025.

The savings amounts to around $25 million. You could make a case that the players weren’t really going to be worth that.

The annoying part is going to be when the Cardinals don’t really spend any money to replace the production as the payroll heads into a spiral this winter.

Let’s talk it over as the St. Louis Cardinals off-season is officially underway.

  1. Kinda wish we held on to Gibson, totally understand why they didn’t though. Might be interesting going from a team with a large portion of veterans, to almost none at all. Look, I know it didn’t work out last season in terms of the playoffs, however objectively there were some young guys who stepped last year. I only wonder how much, if any of that, can be partially attributed to the veteran presence, especially as it relates to pitching.

  2. Not picking up Gibson makes me think Gray is staying … and I am ok with that … Gray Fedde Pallante McGreevy/Matz and Mikolas holding the spot til someone else emerges seems like an capable enough rotation to not be absolutely terrible

  3. These were easy, no brainer moves. No need to take innings away with 3 older players on the decline. Bringing back none of our FA is just an easy decision. Goldy, Carp, etc. The work starts with potential trades of any of our 3 highest paid vets. Also, I think Matz can be traded with us eating at least half his salary. It's almost certain Helsley will be traded and its the right move. He'll bring a couple of really good prospects.

  4. I am glad Lynn is gone. He is past his prime, and I can see at team picking him up for a year, or basically stuck as a FA and no one calling him. Gibson, he wasn't too bad, and I'm mix if they should keep him or not. Middleton was sadly out all year, so no idea how he will be coming off an injury.

  5. I actually would have liked to keep Lance on a team friendly contract. Would like to see the money owed Nadi and Grey spent elsewhere. Would like Gorman to be training at 3B all off-season.

  6. So, if Fedde and Gray get traded, we're looking at a rotation of (in no particular order)…

    1. Matz
    2. Mikolas
    3. Pallante
    4. McGreevey
    5. Either Graceffo or maybe they give Libertore one more, serious, shot at the rotation.

I'm weirdly excited by this. We will get to see what some of these young arms are capable of, and we still have several other guys who will still be waiting for their shot.

  7. Nice to hear a calm level head for a change. I don't agree with every move I think the Cards will make but they certainly needed to make some. Hate to see Goldy go as regardless of one bad (average) season, I think he still is above average for the most part. Too bad they couldn't keep him with a lower salary but I also know it's all about the money. Sadly

  8. I would like to appreciate each man’s contributions to the 2024 Cardinals

Lynn had an above average ERA and pitched some great games
Gibson ate a lot of innings and was a great clubhouse guy
    Middleton

  9. The truth and fact is cardinals don’t need to trade arenado helsley Sonny gray they really need to keep them mikolas need to be cut the fact is they need to upgrade the outfield
