  1. This is procedural in my opinion, Mo wants to lower each of those 4's salaries. So he makes no commitment up front, then the two sides' negotiate.
If we lose two out of the bullpen (and that's likely), I see Lynn and Gibson become very valuable to keeping the pitching staff competitive, although both may have a bit different role in 2025.
I've not heard anywhere that StL would not re-sign Goldy, just that they are letting him check out his free agent value. Goldy attending that fundraising event in StL tells me he isn't cutting ties with the team just yet.

  2. Please pay to get rid of Mikolas, Matz. Then it will feel like we've "cleaned house." Until the kids come up, we need to keep Gray and Fedde. Trade Arenado, Contreras, Helsey, but beef up the starting pitching staff to compete during the rebuild. Happy Halloween! Let's hope we get some treats instead of tricked this off-season.

  3. I don't think I'll go that hard on Fedde. Coming over at the deadline, learning how to work with new catchers and a new staff, never easy, especially for a young guy. In his 10 starts for the Cards, he had 2 real stinkers at first, 4 that were at least good (game score 50-60), and 4 that were really good (game scores greater than 60) and his last start was a GS of 75 in Colorado. I'll take that all day long! He fell victim to the bats failure to produce runs, though. I hate looking at wins and losses to judge a pitcher, too many other factors such as offense and fielding play into the end result. I don't like saddling the pitcher with the outcome of the game when he can't do everything. It IS a team sport, after all.

  4. JD, you frequently say “what if” Willson Contreras has not spent so much time on the IL this year? How much better could the Cards have been!! i dont follow that logic for one simple reason. He’s been an IL dweller his entire career with 8 years now of being healthy enough to play in 120 games or less about every year. That includes games where he only appeared as a pinch hitter. Innings played is a much more informative indicator which is a stat i am sure teams have access to. As good as his attitude and offense has been when he is fit enough to play — what good is it if he plays in 800 out of 1458 innings a year (in the regular season?). The Cards knew he was prone to injury when they offered him that 5 year 87MM contract.

I compare him closely to Dexter Fowler. Fowler who had a very similar record with with an average only a little above 425 AB’s a season with Denver when we offered him a deal almost identical to what we gave Contreras. Looking at what happened with the outcome we had with Fowler, what was going through Moz head offering the same contract to Contreras when his injury history was right there to see?

In 2020 Fowler only gave us 90 AB’s and we had to eat most of the $18MM contract that final year (2021) that he played for LAA. So, in effect he produced at only a 60% available rate for 3 out of his 5 year contract with the Cards and almost nothing for the final 2 years. He only gave the Angels 20 AB’s in 2021. It looks like thats going to be the same for Contreras. The Cards should know better. I really hope Bloom is smarter than Moz has been the last 8 years. Fowler wasnt the only blown purchase. Steven Matz and to a lesser degree, Matt Carpenter were the same. Carp wasnt injured as much but his value decreased dramatically after 2014 yet Moz offered him a huge 60MM extension after 5 years of weak offense and his defense was never worth bragging about no matter where he was played!

  5. Riddle me this JD, riddle me that, who's gonna play for the Birds on the Bat?
If they put out a rotation of Gray, Fedde, Matz, Pallante, & McGreevy with callups for Matthews and Hence at some point and the starting arms should be good.
If they get rid of Arenado they should move Gorman to 3rd (unless they plug Walker back there)

  6. m not buying into all this. I think it's just an excuse to cut payroll since the fans boycotted the games over poor performance and lack of effort signing better players.

  7. We don't need to bring back any of these 3, it defeats the purpose of giving innings to young pitchers. I do hope Gray and Fedde remain to go with Pallante and McCreevy. Helsley will bring a couple of good prospects and hopefully a close to ripe starting pitcher is one of them. We need to transition much younger with our starting pitchers. I'd prefer to revisit possibly trading Gray at the trade deadline in July. That would give us over half the season to evaluate young pitchers and he'd still have good trade value with a year and a half left on his contract.

  8. The fact that at the beginning of the season was Donavan and at the end our LF was Donavan. Tyler O’Neil if he was our starting left fielder… would his numbers not have layered a major role in the difference of being more competitive and be in a better position to make the playoffs? Was O’Neil the difference for 2024? I bet Mo is thinking (yep, that came right back to bite me right square in the ass) … Mo moments later “well, shit”. Bloom enters the room; in response to his gaze – Bloom – it’s fine feeling washing over him, “I’ll take it from here”. Cardinals are in very good hands. I think 2025 will surprise a lot of us including myself.

  9. I love Gray and hope they keep him. For those who dislike him, how much better would he have been if the cardinals had been able to hit with runners in scoring position. Good grief, the pitcher can only do so much.

  10. There's absolutely no reason to let Gibson go. Other than being flat out cheap. If you take the million dollar buyout off that they already threw away. They could have had the man for 11 million a year. I believe a pitcher of his caliber would easily bring more than that on them open market. The team should be retaining Gibson and shopping miles. Miles is the guy that shouldn't be on this team next year

  11. Bill DeWitt III – told Martin Kilcoyne (mid season) laughingly, that if the fans don't come out to watch their mediocre product,
    they will cut payroll….
Hence, end of season, it was an easy scapegoat to say "we are focusing on player development," wink, wink,
instead of telling the truth, that they are slashing payroll (even more) because of lost attendance revenue, and tv contract problems.

  12. what bothers me, is that if this were Doug Armstrong, and he was coming off of same 2023 & 2024,

he'd be practically telling the media that "It's his fault… and he's failed them…"

But Mozeliak, is still out there, giving casual interviews, (as if he acknowledges some mistakes), but overall

doesn't owe anyone an apology, because of his track record…

(which actually, is highly on the shoulders of Jocketty, Luhnow, and others).
