Signs point to the Cardinals trading Nolan Arenado this winter?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent rumblings that point to the likelihood of the Cardinals trading Nolan Arenado this winter. If the Cardinals have talked to all of their players with no-trade clauses and it was reported that Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray prefer to stay with St. Louis — does that imply that Nolan Arenado does not want to be here anymore?

We’ll dive into the nuance of that question. But realistically, could anyone blame him if that were the case? The Cardinals aren’t moving in an immediate direction that prioritizes the championship that Arenado craves. We’ll break down his status as well as speculation on how likely it is that the Cardinals pull the trigger on dealing him.

Plus, whether the timing might be reasonable for all parties to do it now.

  1. Why would Arenado want to be part of an organization being rebuilt. He came to win the WS and everyone can see it’s not going to happen in STL for a long time to come.

  2. I’m sure Arenado is a solid dude.. but let’s be real here.. Mo lied to this guy about a contender.. this guy continues to get a pass constantly for his BS..

  3. Nolan was over rated playing in Col was the factor that people said it was he's suppose to be the elite pull side power hitter but he has to have everything go perfect to hit one out so ship him to hitter friendly park again

  4. If i was him I would go. It sucks for his fans. But they need 3rd base open. It gets the other guys so much more playing time … I hope he goes somewhere where he can win … Maybe him and Siani can go to the Yankees and make a run. Siani inbetween Judge and Stanton. Move Chisholm to short … I think Soto goes to the Mets or Phillies.

  5. Ok so if you're only trading 2 players (Gray & Contreras are staying) your not getting a whole lot back and if you're not signing free agents then what the hell are we doing ? So your not trying to make the playoffs and your not really rebuilding either. I'm confused.

  6. A clean break from the disappointments of Goldy and Mr. Drama would be quite welcome for me. Let the kids play. And yes, I think both deserve to be in the HOF. Also realizing there is a reason both of their teams let them go. Saw that the estimated value of Arenado for the remainder of his contract is $25 M less than he is owed. Ugh. Gorman/ Donnie if needed at 3B, competition between Saggese and Wetherholt for 2B. Thinking the team will be better next year.

  7. Pardon my French, but why the f**k would we trade Donovan!? I thought that we traded Tommy Edman BECAUSE we wanted to keep Donovan around. Remember when Gorman, Nootbaar, and Donovan were the pieces that were talked about as trade pieces for Sean Murphy or Logan Gilbert? (I said that Gorman and Noot could be traded, but I want Donny to stay in St. Louis).

That said, Donavan has been pretty much what Edman was for us as a utility guy, and if Gorman doesn't turn out, we will need someone to pmay 2B or 3B: we can't have Saggase play both, in the same inning.

Donovan is the type of guy you 100% build around. Whether he lives up to that status or not is besides the point. In the here and now, Donovan is a young veteran who fits the role we are going to need while we see whether or not the prospects pan out or flame out.

  8. Might as well keep Miles. I think he will actually bounce back a bit next year.Keep Matz too. He's a good pitcher when healthy. They should try to extend Fedde,Donavon and Nootbaar imo. They probably won't though. I bet they will field a lot of phone calls this off season for all 3 of them.

  9. I understand him wanting to be traded to a contender but honestly a lot of the cardinals losing games falls squarely on arenado the past couple seasons he’s not been very good at all as he and goldy went the cardinals went

  10. was hoping he'd be able to turn it around and play well enough to end his career here. I get why the team is looking to move him though and I wouldn't be surprised if another winning organization with a better development/coaching infrastructure revives him a little bit. can also understand why he'd want to leave but I just don't want to see it happen 🙁

  11. I'll always love Arenado. What a joy to watch for a lot of years. Disappointing that we couldn't build a WS winning team round him and Goldy. He deserves better but i think we deserve better production for the financial outlay. ❤❤

  12. Trading Arenado makes sense and so does Helsley. But I would wait till the deadline in Helsley as you just never know. We may be better than expected. If not then trade him. MIkolas does not walk anyone because he throws over the plate. Problem is he does not have swing and miss stuff. More sweeper and less change up or curve.

  13. The most important part of letting nado go will be increasing the clubhouse vibes. Getting back something that contributes later on is nice, but i think everyone’s mental health improves now. I like nado and he’s a great player and i hope he goes to a contender.
I see mikolas staying. Nobody wants him or his salary right now. If he pitches a great first half or first 2 months then move him.
Helsely is the trade piece that needs to count. Ive always liked kjerstad from the Os. Whatever deal it is its got to go the cards way to make up for some recent bad decisions.

  14. If the pitching holds up and some of the fielders move around, why can't the Cards be about 500 again. I think they are shooting for 2026. That is why Sunny and Controus are staying.

  15. I think one option is to trade Arenado & Helsley together in the same trade. Probably not my favorite. Probably getting less in prospects but also paying less of Arenado’s salary. If you could get 1 really good prospect but pay very little of Arenado’s salary would you do it ??

  16. Tough one but needed. Didn't know this at the time, but Goldy/Arenado needed leaders on the team. It's not a role they could do. 2021 they had Yadi. 2022 they had Pujols. When the leadership fell on their shoulders, they started to decline. He does deserve to be on a team that isn't depending on him, but bummed he couldn't execute in 21/22 when we needed him the most.

  17. I thought they should've traded arenado ,goldy last year we weren't winning with both of them ,we could've got more in return..
The signings of Lynn , carp and Crawford were so foolish ,dumb..
You in the hell did that ?
    Mo or Dewitt ? 😂😂
    Trade miles asap .
While you're at trade matz. ❤❤
