[Romero] “Aroldis Chapman will become the highest-earning reliever in MLB history, surpassing Mariano Rivera, with his guaranteed one-year, $10.7M contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to @spotrac. Chapman: $176,566,491. Rivera: $169,614,125. He is represented by Wasserman.”

  1. This doesn’t account for inflation so it’s kind of misrepresentative to say Chapman is wealthier or earned more if Mariano has more buying power.

  2. Disgusting to have Chapman mentioned in the same sentence as Mo, an actual legend of the sport

  3. Kind of crazy that it took this long for Rivera’s career earnings to be surpassed.

  4. I sincerely hope he gets blown up every time he’s brought in. They finally decide to spend money and they bring in this asshat

  5. The Red Sox, basically since the Mookie trade, have largely been punting spending any real money on anyone who actually has a big upside or who is actually still good. A north-of-3.70 ERA for a reliever (he’s definitely not a closer anymore) plus the large number of BB, making his WHIP terrible…Come on, John Henry, gimme us fans a break.

Plus the fact that he’s Aroldis bloody Chapman and nobody wants to see him on this team except for Yankee fans.

  6. What did the Royals give him last year? This feels like an overpay, but the contract sizes going up has also skewed what I think is normal

  7. the lesson i am learning is: if i just *happen* to wake up tomorrow in the body of a shitbag domestic abuser somehow, I just need to learn how to throw 100mph and i can literally become the highest paid person in my line of work and literally nobody will care about the violence against women. great, neat, fantastic.
