[Katie Woo] News from Ken on Ryan Helsley, who was projected at the start of the offseason to be a top trade candidate. Now? Not so fast. “It’s something we will always remain open-minded to, but our plan is to have (Helsley) be part of our organization,” — John Mozeliak #STLCards

Because holding on to a 30 year old closer in the middle of a retool is wise. Helsley’s value will never be higher and he’s a luxury player for the position the team is in. Baffling decision making.
He’s bluffing….. right?
Ya this is all just talking out of the side of the mouth
Asking out of curiosity and not knowing anything about this, but what are the chances he becomes part of the starting rotation and not staying in the bullpen as a closer?
This means nothing. You always talk up your guys until they’re not your guys.
It feels like there’s been a shift in rhetoric since the TV deal was signed. I’m not sure there’s going to be much of a “retool” next year, other than Goldy and Arenado. Those are big names, sure, but they’re also not MVP level anymore.
Loyalty, Helsley just said two days ago he wanted to stay in STL.
Hey call me crazy but maybe since our biggest issue by far has been pitching for years now, we should maybe keep our best pitchers. I’m tired of seeing ex Cardinals’ pitching prospects flourish once we trade them. The Royals made the playoffs with guys in their starting lineup with a 200 batting average.
your move, Dodgers.
Of course he is going to say that. It makes no sense to keep Helsey on the roster and if this isn’t just posturing I’ll be really upset.
Absolutely no reason to keep him. Only reason saying something like this would be wise is to potentially raise the asking price for him
Only 10.5 months until Helsley strikes out Tommy Edman to send the Cardinals to the World Series.
on one hand, i really respect helsley for wanting to be a lifelong cardinal even through the shitty years. on the other hand, we could probably get quite the package for him.
Absolutely not surprising at all.
Why?
The only time I tend to believe Mozeliak is when he says “We aren’t going to change”.
I really really enjoy Helsley as our closer. It’s great. I’d like it much more if we had another solid AA/AAA prospect and maybe a total lottery ticket project on top.
Completely frustrating and utterly unsurprising news report.
I actually wouldn’t mind keeping Fedde, Gray, Willson, and Helsley for 2025, but keeping them all only makes sense if we sign a decent FA as well. IIRC Mo said they won’t really be looking at anyone in free agency so I don’t understand holding on to single year pieces if that’s the case. There is an argument to hold them until the deadline and trade them if we aren’t in contention because I do think the team might be decent enough for a fluke playoff birth, but the risk of injury is too great in my mind to risk doing so.
In an alternate reality maybe they just choose to extend Helsley which I would also be okay with but I live on this earth so I’ll believe it when I see it.
Would be a huge mistake not to trade him at his all time high. But I can’t say I’d be surprised from Mozeliak
Trading him would be best case scenario. If they can sign him to an extension then keeping him will at least make some sense
#THEY WANT TO WIN!!!!!
His value will never be higher. Jesus, Mo.
I hope he stays with the cardinals and becomes a career player, like waino and yadi. He grew up rooting for the cards and now plays for his childhood team. I just wish mo would grow a set and fire oli so the team can get to the playoffs
