“It is a certainty now that the Padres need a catcher — and perhaps two — after Kyle Higashioka signed with the Rangers last week. It seems as likely Luis Campusano, who finished the season in Triple-A after beginning it as the primary starter, will be packaged in a trade as be in spring training with the Padres. There is no readily apparent offensive upgrade but plenty of average catchers available via trade and on the free agent market, and the Padres have cast a wide net.”
He showed promise offensively in 2023, but really took a step back across the board in 2024.
Surprised that they let go of Kyle based on what he got.
Damn. Packaged in a trade for what? Bubble gum?
Makes sense. Campusano was given several chances between 2021-2024 to be the starting catcher of the future with this team in this current era. Some of that was rushing him in the beginning during COVID and how the team handled him during the season(look at 2022), but also part of that is on himself because of injuries and my feeling is straight up laziness (my assumption) since his catching ability behind the plate fell off a cliff. I think trading him to a new organization would do him good in my opinion for his career. A lot of teams wanted him from 2020-2022 after all those years of trades and Preller stuck with Campy versus the Mackenzie Gore’s, CJ Abrams, Andres Munoz, Owen Cassie to name a few guys who would be on this team if switched out with Campy in one of these trades if history was different. If he’s good in the future with another team, good for him
My question is does Preller trade for a catcher or sign someone short term before Salas comes up? I know some people here want Brett Sullivan to come up but I want him nothing more than a backup cause it’s hard to take this team seriously with him as a starting catcher for a full season
Who the fuck will our starting catcher be?
There’s really no traits to bank on with him to be blunt. Likely the worst defensive catcher in the league, bad bat speed, and no walks.
Decent bat to ball skills but he’d have to hit .270+ to justify a roster spot and that seems highly unlikely. Just didn’t develop the way we hoped. If another team values him at all then shipping him off is probably for the best.
Change of scenery could be great for him, we’ve seen what it’s done for some of those borderline players in the past. Was hoping to see at least another season before we decided to move on from him but in Preller we trust.
Why would we trade him now? Value at all time low, we have no catchers, he is cheap, and Salas MLB track has been slowed down.
disappointing- seems like we didn’t see his potential
Our list of catchers grows thin.
Campi, Crone, Xander for a thank you card. Let’s Go!!!!
