The Arizona Diamondbacks and Maricopa County remained far apart on key details of a potential lease extension for county-owned Chase Field this week as the clock continued to tick on a new agreement and the parties’ relationship appeared to sour.

Correspondence obtained by The Arizona Republic shed new light on what the two sides see as ideal paths forward — and the set of financial sticking points that have so far stymied an agreement.

Both entities recently expressed frustration with the negotiations. County officials said a team proposal from the summer was “neither practical nor viable.” In return, team leaders said a recent counteroffer was “simply not a serious or logical proposal.”

  2. I went to a Diamondbacks game the year after the stadium opened, in 1999. It was June and it was like 115 degrees outside in Phoenix, but a chilly 72 or so in the stadium. It was the single most comfortable baseball experience I'd ever had. The stadium was pretty amazing, though I'd only ever been to an Orioles game at Camden Yards in the 90's to compare it to. It's a shame that it hasn't been maintained and improved, frankly.

  3. I went to a dodgers dbacks game Labor Day weekend and the stadium was full. Packed. And that ac system was struggling to keep up. Hopefully the ballpark gets the upgrades it needs. It’s in a great location downtown

  4. Brodie I believe that the billionaire owners in MLB just want the taxpayer to pay for their yards. MLB needs to self support . They need to build their own stadiums on their own property. They are a business period. Granted entertainment but after over a hundred so years of public funding for their venues . Leases run out and the buildings fall apart. They can play in their Spring Training stadium in 2028.

  5. This basically typifies America nowadays. We don't build things to last, when it breaks don't fix it, don't please the customer just blame someone else and on and on..

  6. As a season ticket holder, here is my guess as to the future. And yes, I was in the stands when it rained in the stadium. It was quite humorous. But I digress.
The Diamondbacks have their spring training facility that they could use if negotiations don’t go well. One of the casinos has land available, so there are options for the D-Backs to stay in Arizona, but not downtown. This is problematic for me, as I ride Light Rail to the games. Paying money to park over and above the ticket price is a no-go for some of us.

  7. Here in Salt Lake we're like a buzzard circling the air waiting to pounce on the weakest teams… Rays? Diamondbacks? White Sox? A's? Expansion team? We're ready! Rapidly growing metro of about 2.6 million (SLC+Ogden+Provo+Park City, all linked together) with great economy, disposable income and a culture that is young and values family events like baseball games. Great climate for baseball too, no worries about roofs or extreme temperatures. I'd rather not poach from Arizona again, but as the video says, SLC will be a player/threat for any unstable team, especially out west.

  8. This shit is always so fascinating to me.

We have BILLIONAIRE owners sitting around with their incredulous hands in the air, all looking at one another…"geez, guys…who on Earth is going to pay for the repairs on this place that we use to play games and further our stock portfolios?"

Meanwhile, up the street we probably have homeless encampments and people that can't afford to buy a single meal, let alone a frigging ticket to a baseball game. The billionaires are remarkably inept at reading the room while they continue to push their narrative in the class war that THEY started.

Remind me again why we continue to tune into these games? We get nothing as fans. There is no monetary compensation. We actually SPEND to be included. There isn't a ring that we get. There isn't a special bonus. There isn't really regional loyalty, at least on their part. If these guys don't get promised enough public money handouts they pout and swear they're going to take all their toys from their current sandbox that, let's face it, isn't that old and is only in disrepair because it was neglected via the holdout for money, not lack of wanting to do it, and move to frigging Utah or Nashville or anywhere that will give in to any desire that they may have.

This shit is tired. The list continues to grow and even in cities where you think there is a stable relationship with the fanbase, think again. The Red Sox make money hand over fist but getting them to keep a hungry fanbase satiated is not in the plan because, well, that just costs too much.

    Baseball used to be fun.

  9. Wow I used to live in Phoenix and loved going to Yotes games when the Sharks were in town. I didn't even know they left. It would be irresponsible of MLB and Maricopa Co to let the DBacks walk but want to see the explaination of the missing non baseball funds from the holding account.

  10. Maybe if some of those EXTREMELY OVERPAID losers, sold some of their GOLD CHAINS they could fix the roof . As far as the SO CALLED hockey team , thank god they are gone . Wait until Utah realizes what a garbage sports franchise they just got !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. They're moving to Portland, Oregon if they're going to leave. It makes too much sense. Several hours from the closest other MLB team, their High-A affiliate (Hillsboro Hops) are in a suburb of Portland, and Portland has the population to support it.

  12. Sadly, this is a case where the city should make the team build it and maintain it and stay out of it… but we gotta have it… NOPE.. The team needs you more than you need the team. Here the snakes are being… snakes.. lets be responsible for maintainance… but not fix anything until we can pawn it off on the city in just a few years… I've never been a fan of the D-Backs.. still love my hometown team from long before I moved here and before that.. the snakes were introduced… I still think we need to get back to pre-WWII times when if you the team wanted a faciliity… You built it yourself. That's why Wrigley has it's character.. why so many of the stadiums from 100 years ago had odd shapes… because they couldn't just use eminient domain so they had to build in the area they could buy. Another team screwing the taxpayers because the politicos will let it happen…

  13. MLB has teams with facilities falling apart and completely unusable while simultaneously having other teams handing out the biggest contracts in the history of sports. There needs to be some system of parity. Manfred has done an awful job but this is not just his problem, it's been ongoing for years

  14. I'm so tired of Arizona teams getting national disrespect and no questioning where the money goes.
The Smith Group Media has hyjacked the Arizona metro media with Utah and Vegas game's

  15. As a DBacks die hard it's tiresome to constantly hear about the blame game between the franchise and the city/county on who's responsible for the maintenance for the facility. I reside well outside of Maricopa County down on the Mexico Border but I wish the city government and residences to approve funding for improvements and maintenance for Chase Field. I feel because the County also utilizes the facility as a multi-use facility during the offseason the franchise doesn't feel obligated to fulfill their commitments.

  16. Utah has had since the 2002 Winter Olympics to fix the Delta, get hockey and baseball teams at a lower starting franchise financially. and not getting teams until the the 2030, now 2034 Winter Olympics is suspicious and criminal from the NHL and the league's. One time tax payer payment. Knock it down after building the the new one in the parking lot like MetLife or Citi Field. Born in NJ, live in Phoenix since 95. The teams and leagues need to start lawsuit's for bad faith and failure.
Glendale was fine and before they started building that monstrosity whatever next to State Farm Stadium that land the Dbacks and Coyotes if seriously they wanted a stadium and arena. State and Federal lawsuits should be thrown at these leagues for disrespecting their "fans"
Edit: besides grammar, Gary Bettman wanted the NJ Devils to be the Nashville Cat's while NJ was sweeping Detroit in the Cup Finals and the games 3 and 4 are on YouTube. So was the mob of people in Giants stadium parking lot wanting his head for his comments.
Nashville got a expansion franchise in 1998. Look into it. Utah had since 2002.

  17. Stadiums have become much too disposable in recent years. Look at the Browns trying to move out of stadium that's only 25 years old. These buildings should be durable & upgradeable. I think some of it has to do with how much public money team owners are able to extort out of local taxpayers to build a new stadium.

  18. Doesn't the contract state the team is responsible for maintaining the stadium? End of discussion. The team owners are playing a game of chicken, trying to get the raxpayers to cover up their snafus and ignoring their maintenance responsibilities. Remember the burned out light bulbs in the scoreboard? What a joke.
    Let 'em leave.

  19. Still playing the pied piper for Salt Lake City, Utah stealing pro teams. You never really took on John Fisher for destroying the A's why? MLB is responsible for the Oakland Athletics being gone. And still have not heard you say really one critical word about them. Talking about other teams is a joke when you can't even talk about the reality of MLB and their corruption.

  20. I seriously doubt the DBacks could move, but the war between them and the county has been going on for over a decade. That place is kind of a dump and needs a refresh.

  21. Voters are morons who repeatedly vote to pour money into a stadium for a billionaire owner. Make the owners pay for their own ballparks. Billionares cheer capitalism but turn to socialism when it comes to ballparks. Pay your own way of leave.

  22. Brodie, the thi g that irks me as a Dbacks fan is the excuse Hall has given for searching for a new outlet. Maricopa County in fact did not live up thier end of the contract by keeping the stadium "state of the art" and up to date, ad was in the original lease. So the team would have a point that the county isnt paying for any repairs or rennovations…… IF THEY DIDNT SUE THE COUNTY AND GOT THE RIGHTS TO REPAIR THEMSELVES IN 2018. Why are they using the excuse that maricopa county isnt bringing anything to the table when they sued so that the county isnt required to? Why are they complaining that the stadium is run down when the team retains the right to repair?? Hall is just trying to push the blame off of themselves. Kendrick just wants a new stadium to build the bullshit village, i mean Ballpark Village. There is nothing wrong with Chase in regards to location, and they just need to bite the bullet and do the effin repairs and rennovations

  23. Kendrick just needs to sell the team if he doesn’t want to pay for renovations or a new park. There was already rumors two years ago that groups who were interested in the Angels potential sell were also looking at the diamondbacks and were saying they would be willing to help renovate or build a new stadium if they purchased the team.

  24. Everybody knew, going into this arrangement that Phoenix is very hot in the summertime. The parties said "Hey no problem, we will build a stadium that will mitigate that." Perhaps this is not really a possibility.

  25. KEN KENDRICK SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. Blatantly pissing on the legacy that Jerry Colangelo made possible for us out here in the desert.
    SELL THE TEAM KEN!!!!!!!

  26. With the resurgence ASU athletics I can see where the people of Phoenix including myself will tell the pro teams to take a hike. If the Dbacks leave I can easily see Chase Field demolished and replaced with condos. ASU owned this town in the 70's and I can see the Sun Devils reclaiming the top spot. MLB in the next few years may see multiple teams relocating which means there is going to be realignment. I predict divisions will be eliminated and it will be just the American and National Leagues.
