Honestly, more if Skubal puts together another Cy Young caliber season
That’ll just make it easier for Tigers FO to let him walk. We all see what’s happening with this team
Tigers doing the exact opposite of what the Lions did with their young studs.
27 mil a year for 8 years????? SOLD
That would be an unbelievable deal for us.
Probably starts at 10/$285. First two years gonna have to be higher than his arbitration estimate to be worth it for him. Figure $30m aav for the final 8 years, plus the 2 arb years at $20m and $25m. But then your gonna have to add some kicker on top to the final 8 too, so the aav of the final 8 years may get pushed closed to $35m, maybe even $40m
Skubal will get more.
I’m disappointed we weren’t more interested in Fried.
Yamamoto got 12 years / $325 million last year IIRC. I’m guessing Skubal will end up somewhere around 10 years / $300 million considering he’s a few year older? Who knows? When rich guys get in bidding wars against one another shit hits the fan
If you’re not willing to extend your stars, nor spend some money on top FA’s, then why do you still own the team? Sell it to someone who is willing to spend a little bit to give a good product.
The owners have profited from us for years and years and still want to maximize earnings for the year.
Sell that gaudy Pizza Hut tower to extend him for all I care. Nothing worse than a cheap nepo baby owner
$350 over 9. Just make it happen and start pretending like you own a baseball team.
I’m just sad
Skubal and Boras have practically all of the leverage here. The odds that Boras would advise Skubal to not hit the open market are low, so whatever the number is to get them to forego FA is going to be very, very high. We have two years of control yet and Skubal has already had one TJ plus another forearm/elbow surgery. I would be thrilled to lock him up, but that’s just not how baseball works.
I know everyone is freaking out, but why don’t we all just take a breath and see what happens. I agree that Tigers SHOULD spend whatever it takes to keep the reigning AL Cy Young winner in Detroit, but we will see what kind of an owner we have here. It’s the first time the Tigers have been competitive since he took over.
They said I was trolling when I said Soto was getting more than Ohtani. They down voted and said it was just cuz ima Tigers fan and don’t know shit about baseball lmfao. Well…Then I said it was gonna take 5/200 to keep Skubal, they called me crazy and said I didn’t know what I was talking about. My comment has 50+ down votes last I checked… They laughed when I said Bregman is gonna get 3/100, and if the Tigers want him they’re gonna have to over pay, and we’re gonna have to offer him more years. Literally replied with lol. But word is he’s looking for and most likely gonna get around 200 mil.
I don’t think y’all understand how fucking crazy sports contracts have been. They’re out of fucking control. I’m not hating, I mean my favorite person in baseball is Scott Boras. But when 25 teams KNOW they don’t have a chance to win the world series, BEFORE the season even starts, the games are pointless. Unless there’s some crazy act of God, there’s a good chance you can guess who’s gonna play in the world series before opening day. I don’t know what the actual number is, but id love to see what percent of world series teams had top 5 payrolls in the past 25 years.
Like of the 50 teams that have played in the World Series since 2000, how many were top 5 payrolls. How many times has a bottom 10-15, bottom half basically, spending team even made the world series. Baseball doesn’t have a cap, which is great. But at the same time they don’t have a floor, so there’s no parody like in EVERY other league.
Bottom line, Skubal is gonna get 5/180-200, Bregman is gonna get 3/100-120, walker-buehler is the one I really don’t know. I think he’s gonna get a 4/5 year deal but i don’t know. But I’m sure there’s multiple teams in on him, and I don’t know who his agent is. If it’s Boras, I see W-B getting something like 3/90-105, or 5/130-150 type deal.
The fucking money that will be spent this off-season and next will be fucking crazy. There’s gonna be a $100mm aav contract soon. I don’t know if it’ll be baseball, probably will but I don’t know. I just know there will be a 5yr/500mm signed at some point within the next couple years
Are we enjoying Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko? Because that’s where the moneys going, as long as Illitch is spending on the Wings the tigers won’t be as much of an asset to spend on. Especially in the “we need a salary cap” era we are in right now
That will be a lot of Crazy Bread™️
I think the Tigers management really wants to see if Skubal can continue to put up high numbers. The Baez situation has really made them hesitant to put big money on long deals. And with how much free agents, even Medicare ones, are pulling, Skubal probably wants a strong offer. Honestly, they probably will give him a good deal if he can continue to lead the team. Hopefully, the rumored low ball offer wasn’t so insulting that Skubal isn’t willing to deal in the coming year.
The Soto deal had already nuked the market. The Fried deal is what all the fallout is going to look like.
I understand that there’s reluctance to go 8 years for a pitcher, but given overall salary inflation this didn’t sound like an overpay. İt’s only $36 million more than Snell got, for an extra 3 years.
I’d suggest offering Skubal the exact same deal that Fried just got, maybe plus $2 mil. İf Boras says it’s not a competitive offer, then start calling the O’s and Cubs about prospects.
