Wish we signed him long term, but I also understand in my objective mind that he may have worth in the trade market that can benefit us in the long run. Lots of us naturally have a soft spot for a batting champ magician.

14m is honestly way more than he’s worth from a market perspective imo. Regardless of how much we like him (I fucking love him), I don’t think he commands the value this arbitration value implies as a free agent. Arbitration is sort of behind on a lot of things, and I think overrates batting averages/titles more than teams seeking free agents due, resulting in this deal being higher.
I don’t think we find much value in trading him at this price tag outside of a “money is no object win-now and we need this exact skill set” partner – of which there can’t be many. I think he stays with us this year.
That said my hope is that he tests free agency next year, sees the market doesn’t value his skills, and signs for something like 3-5 years at 8-10m AAV. That’s a good value point for us, who uniquely values his skills.
I know this post sounds like I’m low on Arraez but I really do love him and hope there is a long term solution that keeps him on the Padres for years to come.
Edit/Update: the fact that Cease’ Arbitration is less than Arraez sort of proves my point. Cease will make WAY more starting next year than Arraez.

He doesn’t need to do much to up that WAR. Get around 3-4% more walks and work on your defense like you work on your offense. He has the eye and the plate discipline. It’s his walk year (no pun intended) so I absolutely expect a rebound year. He averaged 4.2 bWAR from 21-23. He’s my favorite player so it will be cool to see some evolution.
