What Happened to the Yzerplan?

Steve Yzerman is going into his sixth year as Detroit Red Wings GM. In that time, lots has happened, and the Wings emerge as a team seeking to be competitive, coming out of their rebuild. In the rebuild phase, Yzerman was excellent, accumulating picks for players and drafting what seemed to be the future core pieces of the franchise. However, none of their players have yet to pan out to become the core piece of the franchise necessary to win a championship. Yzerman’s moves have been much more confusing as the team seeks to turn the corner to contention. So today, let’s take a look at what exactly has happened to the Yzerplan, and why it seems like it could be a failure by the time its all said and done.

  1. The ‘Yzerplan’ was NOT what was explained to me. Bring in people who can play a 200’ game, that fit the SY profile, and flood the minors with prospects that can fill the positions available. Well, because these ‘prospects’ have not develop fast enough. Thus, the second-class UFA’s that he iverpaid for + a plethora of bad moves to get rid of players, that I can only guess, he didn’t like. That is why we are where we are. Hronek – 7 years of developing, playing well – traded to Vancouver for a #1 draft pick who will take 5 years to develop! Walman ‘given away’ as a #1 D man with Seider – and insult to injury – added a 2nd rounder in Gibson, yet another D man – who will be a big time NHL D man. Ghost and Perron let to drift but keeping Holl, Petry and Fletcher. NONE of this was to be part of the Yzerplan!

  2. Pretty funny this shows up now, as McClellan has the Wings on a rampage. Problem was the coaching. We don’t know whether The Captain had an adequate budget when he hired LaLonde or the owner had him find someone o. the cheap.

  3. Raymond is the first Red Wing to have 80 points (2024) in a calendar year since Datsyuk in 2009. Seider while not perfect is solid as a rock. He's only 23 years old with time to grow. Axel Sandin Pellikka is tearing it up in the SHL. Edvinsson is still a rookie and looking solid. Not to mention Cossa and Augustine. As someone that watched the Red Wings in the 1980's championship teams aren't built over night. It took Yzerman 14 years of being in the league before he won cup. Yeah Yeah Yeah people were calling Yzerman out in the early 90's and he proved them all wrong. Yzerman is the Red Wings and I'll bleed red and white until the day I die.

  4. Yzerman really does get far too much of the credit for the Tampa Bay team, to the negligence of Brisebois's work during Stevie's tenure with the team.
Scouting reports from the hockey media have recapitulated this impulse when evaluating the prospect pool. Despite the fact none of Yzerman's picks projected to be top 20 players or better at the time of their drafting, every year since has seen the prospect power rankings putting Detroit at the top. Padding an entire franchise with middle talent guys might ultimately see a meaningful outcome but doesn't seem to reflect some market inefficiency Yzerman is exploiting. This isn't a playoff team and I can't bear to see the team standing on the precipice of a second rebuild.

  5. Tell Bill Zito that trades and FA’s aren’t as necessary to a rebuild. He built a Cup winner and long term contender almost entirely through trades to teams that had given up on their players and finding gems in the scrap heap of waivers. FL’s pro scouting should get credit too.

Sure, they drafted Barkov and Ekblad, but Bennett, Verhagee, Rodrigues, Kulikov, Mikkola Stolarz, and especially Forsling…all either free or for peanuts. Forsling was picked up on waivers! One of the best 2 way Dmen in the league imo. Reinhart and Montour were steals.

Lundell was a mid 1st rounder in 2020. Luosterinin was acquired in a trade.

  6. What an insulting take on Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. I'm not sure anything they could ever do would be enough to appease some observers. What they are doing with the lack of a supporting cast is impressive in its own right. The fact that Raymond and Seider are mentioned in the same breath as Datsyuk and Lidström is a testament to their output. It blows my mind how easily their accomplishments are diminished and how many tires are pumped elsewhere in the NHL. They deserve the same level of respect as anyone else in the NHL.

Who specifically would YOU have signed instead of the players Yzerman brought in? What would the contract amount and term be? How would you have drawn them into Detroit over the more desirable teams (whether it's better weather, tax breaks, or more competitive teams)? People LOVE to criticize these UFA signings, myself included, but the fact is that nobody wants to come to Detroit unless they're paid above or longer than the other options that were/are available (with the exception of Kane). Detroit isn't a destination team.

In fact, Yzerman's term on the deals he signed line up almost perfectly with ELC's expiring. Did he overpay for them? Yes. Will it negatively impact the future of the Wings? No. Does it hurt my wallet? Nope. He made sure if a contract would be too long, he walked away from the player.

Yzerman is investing in his prospects over the long term. He found his number 1 defenseman & winger. Cossa & Augustine can battle it out for 1a & 1b in net. They have plenty of help in the pipeline. Maybe by your definition of a star player, the Wings don't have much. In terms of compete, they have one of the best prospect pools around.
