Colts Defensive Coordinator Candidates: Dennis Allen

  1. I don’t care who it is, so long as they run a different scheme and Ballard changes out a bunch of players. Is that too much to ask?

  2. Notes:

Fits the mold for a more experienced DC compared to Chris Harris who would be going into his first DC role ever with us

He’s been coaching in the NFL since 2002 and started under Wade Philips

Worked his way up the ranks quickly with Sean Payton and the Saints and got his first DC job with the Broncos in 2011 for Tebow’s last season with them. They had the famous Hail Mary to beat the Steelers in overtime in the wild card round. They were destroyed by the Patriots the following week. Looking at the scores, the defense either held the offenses within 7 points of them or they got blown out by 20+, they were very hot and cold.

He was the HC for the Raiders during one of the worst stretches they had. They won 11 games in 3 years.

He went back to the Saints and they had a solid defense. Top 3 in sacks and turnovers in 2019. Number 4 defense in 2020 and top 3 in turnovers.

Became a head coach for the Saints 2022-2024. They had a top 5 defense in 2022 and they were number 3 in turnovers in 2023. He was mediocre as a HC overall though.

Every time Steichen has gone against his defense, his offense has gotten stalled out by Allen.

He fits the mold as a more experienced DC than has HC experience so Steichen could lean on him like he did with Bradley. He’s described as having a fiery personality with a more aggressive defensive approach. Hicks thinks they could be Steichen’s guy if he has his way.

  3. Lou is our guy. And we probably need a good TE more than anything. No offense to Latu, but the pick last year was Brock Bowers if the goddamn Raiders hadn’t taken him
