The only hope is when the CBA expires at the end of of 2026 that they institute a salary cap and floor, which will turn allow them to sign him long term similar to a Franchise QB. That’s the only chance
Considering how they base their entire promotion of the team completely around him already in year 2, I’m almost morbidly looking forward to how they try to explain to the fanbase how/why they didn’t lock him up long term when he gets traded.

Nutting and the Pirates simply can’t afford this guy. A conservative guess is he’ll be in the $400 million range, but with $700 million contracts signed the last two off seasons, the sky’s the limit. It’s one thing to complain (and rightly so) about not signing a few quality players to make his time here worthwhile, but there is simply no way the Pirates could afford this guy, unless he regresses HARD for the next five years.
