[Rome] The Astros have traded Rafael Montero to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later.

  1. I will always give credit to Crane for being willing to spend to try to keep that insane 2022 bullpen intact. Montero didn’t hold up after the first year with us, but the attempt is appreciated.

Now that he and Abreu will be gone next season, let’s hope Dana can cook.

  2. My guess is the Astros are probably eating a good portion of that contract. **At best** Montero is a $2M a year reliever, so if the Astros can get the Braves to take on at least that then I’d say this is a win.

  3. Montero fell off a cliff but he was a key part of that ‘22 bullpen so I’ll always appreciate him on some level.

  4. Hopefully the player to be named later is one of the Braves young outfield prospects

  5. If this came up before he gave us 2 good innings in our twins comeback I’d be uncritically stoked, but now I’m worried we’re losing him right as he’s getting his stride back.

  6. Unironically I think the Astros might regret this. Montero’s new splitter looked pretty good last outing.

  7. He was one of the leverage guys in 2022. That was the best pitching staff over the course of an entire season I’ve ever seen. Mostly a six man rotation that went six plus innings every time out and kept the bullpen rested and in their regular roles where they flat dominated. If he was only going to have one good year in Houston I’m glad it added to a championship. You generally have 1-2 guys who out perform the rest of their career during a championship. Montero filled the bill for 2022.

  8. I think this is mostly about opening up a 40 man roster spot and hopefully getting a little bit of breathing room under the CBT.

  9. Dude was a stud for us during a fairy tale book of a season.

Hope he crushes with them. They seem to be another legit organization for pitchers. Turner Field a bit more favorable to pitchers too.
