Staple – What I’m hearing about the Islanders’ next moves after firing Lou Lamoriello

HUGE list of people in consideration which may result in a POHO/GM like Lou or a POHO and a GM (two separate hires).
List from Staple:
– Ken Holland
– George McPhee (I don’t understand why his name even came up)
– Pat Brisson
– Jeff Gorton
– Ryan Martin
– Brad Holland
– Marc Bergevin
– Jarmo Kekäläinen
– Peter Chiarelli
– Dan MacKinnon
– Jeff Kealty
– Kate Madigan
– Angela Ruggiero
Who is conducting the interviews?
A look on the brighter side of things, Lou’s wrecking ball son Chris Lamoriello is NOT on the list.
This list is brutal. I absolutely do not want Holland, who did a mediocre job building around McDavid and whose last years in Detroit are totally reminiscent of Lou’s last years with the Devils and Isles.
Brisson could be interesting, Chiarelli would be horrifying.
Chiarelli ?? He’d be worse than Grandpa Louie
Please no Chiarelli or Holland
He’s just guessing. Staple is a decent beat guy but he’s never shown himself to have any inside info.
Holland or ciarelli would be nightmare stuff.
Not an inspiring list, I still think they hire Holland in a president role and a younger GM, possibly recently retired player. It would be typical Islanders thinking
Holland as the president of Hockey ops wouldn’t be a bad idea to help find a GM. Ideally it would help extend the GM search and not basically force them to go in completely blind for the draft assuming no GM/AGM/scouting department is hired by then. Essentially all we know that we have right now (pending more firings) is the current coaching staff and John Collins.
Unsurprising; makes sense that the top candidates are all familiar names.
I understand concern around Holland and Chiarelli as their decision making in the past is spotty (especially the latter) but Staple points out something that I think is commonly lost when discussing candidates for a President and/or GM role and that’s the institutional knowledge and network they bring in.
Having someone familiar with the other GM’s, and experience that’s amassed a collection of people to tap expertise and insight from is a net positive.
We also don’t know for sure what the pain points are in the front office; all we can really do is speculate. Perhaps the team would fair significantly better with the GM and Roy being in alignment on team construction. It’s also worth noting that a lot of decisions need to be made, and soon, so a first-time GM could be overwhelmed and not well equipped to keep their cool.
Too many retreads who will be no different than Lou. We need younger talent focused on the new NHL. Matthieu Darche needs to get an interview.
I’d take snow over most of this list tbh
Typical whole lot of nothing from staple
Looks like the secret is Roy to GM. Looking to hire lavs back as coach. Stanley cup guaranteed next year.
Ugh the majority of the list is depressing. New Blood or a former Islander who actually gives a shit about this franchise. There are more than a couple of those available.
I wouldn’t mind a Ken Holland type as POHO, but hard pass on having him as GM.
I want a young smart person who’s analytically minded as GM. If the Isles hire someone and I’ve never heard their name before, I’ll be happy. I’m tired of retreading old names to try to recreate success they’ve had with previous teams. It doesn’t work.
LOL can you imaging if we hired John Tavares’s agent to be our GM. I’d lose my god damn mind
The old boys club as usual for these positions. Might as well be a union on Long Island. I prefer two people/two roles
Hahahaha everyone wanted Lou gone and now our options appear to be Jarmo, Chiarelli, or Bergevin. Unreal.
I’ll take Holland. He at least had success in his career
