  1. Picking a no call vs a bad call like it means something….get over it, hasn’t changed in a decade. The only thing.that changed is the capacity to bitch about it.

  2. A beer league guy once told me “if you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin”

  3. I wish everyone would stop complaining about the refs and accept that they aren’t perfect. At this point it’s on you for not realizing this.

  4. Is it specifically against the rules for a player other than the goalie to cover the puck during a scramble in front of the net? And what happens when they do?

  5. Not easy to spot that in real time in that chaos in front of the net I imagine. I’m often surprised by things the refs miss but this one really isn’t one of them

  6. It came out real fast. I’m a total neutral in this. Sitting at an airport bar in Denver and I put my hand up and kinda muttered “well, that’s a penalty shot”.

    Didn’t even get reviewed 🤷‍♂️

  7. This was so bizarre. The ref is perfectly positioned, nothing obstructing his view. If he lost sight of the puck when it was in front of Kuemper and blew the whistle it would be understandable . But he waits, stares at the puck trickling out, sees Byfield intentionally jump on it with his hand and then decides to blow the whistle.

  8. I thought the announcers said the refs had already blown the whistle at that point (or mentally made the determination the puck was covered) but it doesn’t even matter. Refs have been godawful this whole series. Games 2 and 4 they should’ve given Edm 2-3 more PPs each game for extremely blatant non-calls. Last night’s penalty on Doughty was a complete fabrication while Kane blatantly plowed knee on knee with Kempe out in the open to no call at all.

This series was over after realizing they’re going to keep playing prevent defense in the third no matter how many times they let teams back in the game and that idiotic challenge. We were scoring just fine and it was only a tying goal, zero evidence of interference but nope, just give two of the best players in the league a PP and ten seconds decides the series. I’d be fine getting rid of the coach even after only a year. This series’ failures are squarely on him.

  9. Glad we still pulled off a win and shit happens in a game but I don’t understand why the refs didn’t come together and have a chat about it, there wasn’t even a discussion amongst the officials. Puck over glass of high sticks etc. they always at least huddle and talk about what was seen and whether they should review it. The fact it wasn’t reviewed boggles my mind

  10. The officials this post season have been horrible as they have all year. The NHL needs to look at the development of the officials. Converting players into referees is not working, and the qualified officials working their way up the ranks are being bypassed and the game is suffering!

  11. Let’s review the play that’s offside by an inch (twice) but not this. Idiotic

  12. If you had shown me this video and asked if Edmonton got the penalty shot I would say

“Based on the rule they likely should but it all my years of watching hockey I’ve never seen a play like this get a penalty shot.”

  13. Why not do this? Referees have made it clear they don’t want to make any calls that actually impact the game. So you’re going to get away with things like this.

  14. American team gets a break from the officials when playing a Canadian team, how shocking!

  15. Second time in these playoffs that I’ve seen a player cover the puck with his hand. Both times,no call.

  16. NHL refs hit a new low this playoff season. Exceptionally bad in this oilers series.

  17. This picture is shit, I can clearly see a puck that is not covered lol why post a picture at all “this is the game that a missed call occurred in at some point”

  18. What I didn’t understand is the commentators (Sportsnet) were LITERALLY SAYING if there was a hand on the puck it’s a penalty shot, and then ALSO SAYING as this clip was rolling “he threw his body on it and didn’t put hands on puck”, as he two hand shuffles the puck underneath him.

It was such a weird moment.

  19. it’s like refs forget the rules once playoffs start, LA was a bit dirty this match, lots of missed calls

  20. Literally as soon as it happened I stood up and yelled “penalty shot!” Oh man how stupid I must be to think that, eh?

  21. They won… karma played out as it should have… but this is a penalty 100%!

  22. To me it looks like he shuffles it behind himself, which is not against the rules. Can’t see if he actually covers it, and the puck very clearly came out from under him which means he didn’t cover it

  23. Punishment was that they lost anyways and got embarrassed frankly. I’ll take it

  24. Yeah, the Kings got away with one there. However, that a knee on knee to Kempe that happened right in front of the ref and there was no call. Luckily Kempe came back into the game

  25. refs have been ass this entire series. calls, non-calls, everything in between. for both us and the Oilers. it’s ridiculous.

  26. I was surprised they didn’t call it, but at the end of the day it didn’t make a difference, so there’s no reason to dwell on it

  27. Why don’t the refs huddle up and say “I think he may have covered the puck with his hands, let’s take a quick look at the camera”

Is that actually against NHL rules? Even for the refs to look at the camera?

It seems ludicrous that it would be non-reviewable to that degree, because it could result in a full penalty shot.

  28. Byfield – the reason they are down 3-2 in games vs having clinched at home last night
