Arizona Diamondbacks vs New York Mets Predictions Today | Thursday MLB Picks for 5/1/25

Everything is at that link up there. On to the free play. Zack Allen goes to the Big Apple to take on Kodai Singa and the Mets. The Mets are quietly uh owning baseball’s best record. Uh and they are 13-2 at home. That’s amazing. Uh Diamondbacks have a pretty good away record at 8 and six, but if you break it down, uh I see some chinks in the armor here. Uh Diamondbacks were looking pretty strong to start the season. uh tripping up a little bit here. Uh if you look at batting, uh I was a Major League Baseball scout uh a while back for 10 years and I have a system where I use a lot of different stats and I roll them up uh and I use them to rank the teams one to 30 in batting, bullpen, and starting pitching. Uh I have the Mets batting number three in all of Major League Baseball right now. Uh, and I have the Diamondbacks batting 17, which is below average. Uh, yes, they do have good hitting, power hitting, but current form is really big in baseball because these guys are human beings and they get in slumps. When the whole team slumps together, this is what we’re seeing with the Diamondbacks. Yes, they do have potential to hit, but they just aren’t getting it done right now. Uh, bullpens, uh, I have the Mets ranked 16, slightly below average, but I have the Diamondbacks ranked 26. They’re missing some of their players from the bullpen and they are just throwing games right now. If you’ve noticed the past week, their bullpen cannot hold anything down. Uh they’re performing quite terribly right now. Uh and take a look at uh starting pitching. We got Kodiena and Zack Allen. Zack Allen has a big name uh but he’s not really performing big right now. Uh I have him ranked on a curve of 30. Uh, I have him ranked 17 out of 30 uh for starting pitching. Kodai Singa is having an amazing year. Here’s something about Japanese pitchers. You’ll always notice when they come to the US, they always struggle in their first year. Uh, and then their second year, they catch fire. Uh, we’re seeing that with Roki Sasaki right now. He’s struggling quite badly here in his first year. Uh, Yamamoto was struggling in his first year last year. Uh, but this year he’s coming on. He’s a Sai Young NL Sai Young contender. Uh so Japanese pitchers once they get acclimated to the language barrier uh being away from their families uh and you know living in a different world uh once they get acclimated to that and also the baseball is different uh major league baseballs and Japanese baseballs not only the size but the texture is also different. Uh so you’ll notice uh American pitchers that go to Japan they struggle as well usually in their first year. So, Kodaia, this is not his second year, but I treat it as his second year because he’s been injured. He’s been in and out. Uh he hasn’t been performing uh exactly as to plan. He did struggle his first year. Uh he had some good spots, but this year he’s catching higher. Uh he’s allowed four earned runs in five starts this season. Amazing. And in almost every single one of those starts, uh he’s going past five innings. uh to start the season. He went 5’5, then he went seven innings, 5.2 innings, six innings. Uh granted, he’s not exactly pitching against uh murderers row of hitting. I mean, he’s faced the Cardinals, the A’s, the Marlins, uh and Washington. Decent average hitting, but he’s allowed four earned runs in five starts. That’s pretty amazing. How has he done against the Diamondbacks in his career is a little bit more important. in 35 at bats against. He has an average against of 086. Uh that’s quite amazing. He’s allowed zero home runs and his OPS is 197. I’ve said in many videos I consider 700 OPS to be the Mendoza line. Anything under that and you’re doing a great job. Well, 197 is way below 700. So, I really like Kodai Sena in this matchup. Zack Allen, he’s somewhat of an iron man. I mean, he generally will go through five innings. Uh, but has he been performing well lately? No. Uh, he’s given up uh nine earned runs in his last two starts, uh, 11 earned runs in his last three starts, and 16 earned runs in his last four starts. Not good numbers uh for him. Uh, really not good. Uh, but he has faced better batting teams. He did face Atlanta. Uh he did face the Cubs uh Milwaukee and and and the awful this year. Uh overall uh Zack Allen has performed fairly well against these Mets batters. Uh a big sample size of 88. He’s only allowed two home runs with a 227 average against uh and a 692 OPS, which is just below the Mendoza line. But I like to look at how he performs uh away and at home. At home, he’s a much better pitcher on the road. He’s got an erra of over four. Uh I think he’s going to struggle against these Mets hitters who are on fire. The Mets are number three in Major League Baseball in hitting. And Juan Sodto is not really performing up to expectations. Can you imagine how well this team is going to be going when Juan Sodto finally gets aboard? So, the way I’m going in this is I’m going to take the Mets on an alt minus one run line. The reason I like minus one is because unlike the run line of minus one and a half, uh if your team wins by one, it’s a push instead of a loss. There’s nothing more frustrating than being on the right side and losing your money. Hate it. Uh you can get the Mets minus one at DraftKings for minus 113.
