MLB LIVE🔴 Seattle Mariners vs Oakland Athletics – May 5, 2025 | MLB Full Game #MLBLive #enVivo

just about set to go. Today’s starting pitcher, Gunnar Hogland. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. JP Crawford leading things off and takes a strike. fast for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out [Applause] there on the ground to first and he takes it himself for the out. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Jorge Palano in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. Brings it in with a nice run and grab. Two up, two down. Bill, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Julio Rodriguez the next to hit takes outside. Two outs. Base is empty. [Music] Fly ball to right. Brown. And that is that. Mariners nothing. A’s coming to bat. Back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and pitching in this game, Luis Castillo. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. [Music] and down on strikes he goes and a quick out number one. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. Got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back. Now, here is Tyler Soderstrom. Next offering is fouled back. One out. Base is empty. Next pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. Swinging a miss at a slider. [Applause] Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. Looks pretty tough to start this one. punched out the first two hitters of this ball game and somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play and get something going. Two outs, space is empty. Next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. So here in the three spot, Chris, a hitter low average but high slug. Well, one thing he’s going to lean on are the metrics. His exit velocity has been really good. He’s just had some bad luck hitting the ball right at people outside low. One and one swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. First two hitters get punched out on strikes. Take some notes from the dugout. When you get your chance, go up there and hit the ball hard somewhere. Thomas coming on. Got it. Covered plenty of distance there. And that ends the inning. Scoreless after one. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. And now the switch in catcher Cal Raleigh. He’s hitting for that pop. Came out of the gates really strong. You know, Raleigh made history in 2023. He had a game with two home runs and six RBI’s, becoming the first catcher in Mariners history to do that. And that is out of play. Speaking of dingers, he’s the second fastest of 50 home runs in Seattle history. Only A-Rod needed fewer games. That misses and the count is one and one. And that’s downstairs and outside. 2-1 and it stays fair around first and hustling for second. And he’s got a leadoff double all over that one right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Now it’s Randy Rosarena. Just missed one. that one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Raleigh leads off second with nobody out. Let’s go green, baby. Let’s go. Next offer in there for a strike and it’s two and one [Music] way high. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Swanging a ground ball and that’s just foul. 32 on the way. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out. And there’s one away. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. So, here comes Rowdy Tles. And that one is inside. One ball. No strike. the one and another ball. Time to look at our umpiring crew in this one. Kenny Jansen behind the plate. Yeah, and expect a little inconsistency on the corners. He doesn’t make any wild calls, but he does give and take there a little bit. So, he doesn’t have the easiest strike zone to figure out, especially as the game goes on when you’re expecting it to become more consistent. No. Off the plate. That misses the zone. Three and O. swings through that one. 3-1. Fouls one away. And now three and two. Strike him out. This one popped up. Snags it for the second out. Batting seventh. Left fielder Miles Mastro. Miles Mastroy up next for the Mariners. Now he breaks his bat. Hogland makes the grab. And that is that. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. Now to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. Here’s the power hitting catcher, Shay Langalers. Shay Langalers Castillo back to work. That one in there across the letters. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Puts it in the air out towards left center. He’s got it. One down. Betting fifth center fielder JJ Blade. This is JJ Blade. Baby, let’s go. That’s a strike and one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Popped up foul territory behind a play. has room and he makes the catch. Batting six, right fielder Seth Brown. So here’s Brown at the plate. Gets the call. And that is strike one. [Music] No, one ball, one strike. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Master Bony under it. And that is that. We’ll move to the third with no score. onto the third inning. And now here is Ben Williamson. Williamson measures six feet even in the eighth spot in today’s lineup and he was a second round pick in 2023. That’s in for a strike. One- one swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Around first, heading for two. Now around second, going for third and he’s got a leadoff triple. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Got a fast ball middle of the plate, jumped all over it. absolutely smoked that ball. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Ryland Thomas will hit next. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Fast ball for a strike. That’s in there. And that’s strike two. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. And that one missing inside a sharp slider. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Fires to first on the run in time. Got him. Good situational hitting right there. Grounds out. Gets that run in from third. They get on the board first. JP Crawford digs in now. Grounded out his first time. Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Top of the zone for a called strike. Got to be careful here. This is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone. to the right side. Urias sends it to first. Now they get the out. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll. Batting second base Jorge Palano. Two down, base is empty. Jorge Palano up next for the Mariners. Fly to left. His first time. [Applause] Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. No balls. One strike. [Applause] Fast ball in for a strike and it’s nothing in two. [Applause] That one missing inside. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and that’ll do it. So, it’s one run, one hit, no errors, and no one left on. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Mariners one and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s Luis Oras. Second base, Luis Orias. [Applause] Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. That one 95 to finish him off. Batting eight. That one misses. One and0. One ball, no strikes. Hey, let’s go. [Applause] [Applause] had a good eye there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Line drive, dives, but it kicks off his glove around first. Digging for two. Now the tag at second and he’s out trying for two. Got a lot of the hustle and the attitude there to try to stretch that single into a double but unfortunately thrown out at second base. He was so close to being in scoring position. Gella steps in. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Raleigh hauls it in to end the inning. And the A’s are gone in order. They trail here one- nothing. out of the fourth and stepping in for the Mariners, Julio Rodriguez. Rodriguez, the Mariners knew what they had. signed him in July of 2017 for a little under $2 million when Rodriguez was just 16 years old out of the Dominican Republic. And another ball, fast forward to 2022 for Julio Rodriguez to win the rookie of the year. The Seattle Mariners were then compensated with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the draft in 2023. parted a new CBA enticing teams to promote their good young players. That missed inside. Three and one. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. doubled his first time. Foul ball there. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. Line drive. Come on. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove, but you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right, but in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Randy Rosarena up next for the Mariners. He was a strikeout victim his first time. And that one sliced foul. Rodriguez over at first with one away. runner on the move. Ball misses and that’s a stolen base. Not even close. You know, nights like this when it seems harder to score, I like the call to put them in motion and try to steal the base. Ball’s not carrying. No home runs so far. So, trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go. One out and a runner at second. Top half of inning number four. Ruer goes again. There’s the ball and now a wide throw to third. Wow, that’s a pretty elite throwing arm right there from the catcher spot. Pretty daring for him to try to steal third right there, but he gets the bag. Maybe the element of surprise was what came in because he’s not used to guys running on him. And right there, stealing third base probably caught him off guard a little bit. One away with a runner at third. And there’s a ball. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking, make sure that they don’t get any confidence. And ball four, two aboard. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Toz, two on, one out. Rowdy TZ up next for the Mariners. 0 for one with a fly out. Way to go, baby. Let’s go. That one’s in there. 0 and one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Next one is off the plate. And it’s a ball and a strike. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up, that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. First and third, one down. Missed with a change up and the count now even up. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Inside just missed. [Music] keeps the attack going with a foul ball. That’s towards center. Led makes the catch. Runner tagging from third. He’s in to score on the sack fly and they take a two-run lead. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. And now Miles Mastroy. He’s over for one. just missed. [Applause] We’re on round to go. Pitch in for a strike. Throw to second. Save. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate, man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him thinking that they can even steal a base. But right here they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. Runner at second. Two down [Applause] [Applause] and that one clips the corner. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. Lifted in the air right field. Brown on the move and that’ll do it. So they scratch across a run here on no hits, no errors, and a man left. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Mariners two and the A’s nothing. And we’re back. Now it’s the shortstop. Jacob Wilson. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. That pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. [Applause] Ball two. [Applause] Righty delivers hit on the ground to short. Crawford zips it across and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off man. Left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Tyler Soderstroke up next for the A’s. Struck out looking at his first at bat. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. No balls. One strike. One down. Base is empty. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Oh, this one high and deep. Way back there. Oh, he can’t bring it in. And he’ll pull into second safely. Sant Taylor coming into the game now as the injury replacement number zero. And now the D Brent Rooker flyed to right his first time. Swaying and a miss. There’s the slider going one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Next offering misses down and away. Next one is off the play and it’s two and one. Not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. Two low and it’s ball three. [Applause] Highf fly ball lifted in the air right [Applause] field. Taylor makes the grab. Two down. Up next for the A’s. Catcher Shay Langalers. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. Fly to left his first time. There’s the strike. Good pitch right there. Anytime you can get one by a bat of this caliber, especially with runners on, it’s got to give you some confidence out there on the mound that you can win this battle. Swing and a miss as he was late. Sodro at second with two down. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. in the air left field down the line and that’s a fair ball. The throw into second and he’s out trying for two, but one run does score on the play before the inning ends. One run on two base hits. No errors and no one left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Mariners two and the A’s won. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now for Seattle. Ben Williamson. Hogland back to work in for a strike. 0 and one. [Applause] That one ripped but foul. And that’s outside. One, two. The next pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes. That one just misses. I thought he’d bite right there. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Langalers on his way over. Couldn’t get to it before a dropped foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one misses. So a lead off walk now batting right fielder Samad digging in Samad Taylor came into the game on defense so his first trip to the plate here. Fast ball is outside. The A’s bullpen has some movement. JP Sears, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Edo also getting ready. Nobody out. Runner at first. to third. Might be two. Quick feed to second for one. Back to first. And that is a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the shortstop at the play. JP Crawford foul ball on the ground out to short. Tosses across to first and that is the inning. Mariners go down quietly there. They lead it 2-1. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the center fielder JJ Blade. Center fielder JJ Blade. Check swing and he went strike one. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. So digging in, Seth Brown. There’s the strike. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome, it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. [Applause] And a foul ball. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. That one not close. And it’s one and two. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. This one in the air right field. Taylor under it. Carous it. And there’s two down. Now batting second baseman Luis Urias. Next up for the A’s, Luis Rias struck out swinging his first time. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One strike. The one-1 is fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. [Applause] Herz in the box for the second time. One ball, no strikes. [Applause] Rock and [Music] roll. Fouled off left side and that is downstairs. Two balls, two strikes to count. Yeah, that’s too high. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Gio Urella in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. that keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. [Applause] Here’s right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Two left on. Five innings complete. It’s the Mariners two and the A’s one. We’re back and they make a change to start this. The new pitcher, Oswaldo. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. The batter now, Jorge Palano. Both in this one. And the first offering is not close. Beo goes 6 ft 3 in. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slider, a change up, a cutter, and he works in a sinker. [Applause] Up and in. Now two balls in a strike. Just missed. Three ball. One strike. Next offering is fouled [Applause] [Music] back on the ground right side. And that one handled. Tosses to first. And Palano is out. Now batting the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield. It is beautiful. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. And a slider misses down and away. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial goal glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. It’s not easy laying off that pitch. It’s designed to fool you, but he just wasn’t fooled at all. Runner on at first with one gone. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. He has, as they like to say, let me guess, boo. Light tower power. That’s right. Basketball for a strike. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes, pitch is low. Throw there. Safe. And now he’s up to three stolen bases in the game. Singi, he definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data. And that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. Next offering way off the plate. Rodriguez over at second. One down. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. Well, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] Let’s go to baby. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Ball one. Squirts away a little bit. [Music] That misses the zone. The countdown now two and two. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Not close with that one. And the count’s full. Rowdy TZ up next for the Mariners. [Applause] [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another [Applause] Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10 on the ground right side and it goes just foul. bows it back with two strikes. Two outs and one in scoring position. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Man on second, two down, fouled off. And they’ll do it again. This is something else. Running that pitch count off. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for the pitcher to have so many good pitches spoiled off like this. And ball four, two aboard. When you go that deep into a bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. First base. First and second, two outs. Here’s Rowdy TZ. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fast ball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Two on, two outs. In for a strike and it’s 0 and two. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make [Applause] contact. Two on, two outs. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. In the dirt, blocked. Runners hold tight. It’s a ball and two strikes. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Applause] Two two just misses there. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open. Two outs, couple of base runners at first and second. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Oh, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked it. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball. [Applause] lined and that’s a base hit. One runs in a second scores as well. Up by three. It’s four to one. Oh, that’s a big at bat coming through in the clutch to drive in a pair. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. And up next for Seattle, Ben Williamson popped in the air left field and that’s the third out. So, two runs in the inning on just one base hit. No errors, but two are left stranded. Top of the order, do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Mariners four and the A’s one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Well, we go bottom six at the plate. Jacob Wilson. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Fought off foul. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And it’s even up singing. One of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Caught him looking for the K. Up next now the left fielder Tyler Sodro for two. The Mariners leading by three here in the bottom of the six. And that one got a piece of him. Now batting Rooker now at the plate. Rooker. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there have a real quick inning. Get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. 01 now. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back. Out of here. That should put a jolt into this home crowd. His ninth homer of the year. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 43. That’s exactly what this crowd wanted to see in this spot. He blasted that pitch. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Luis Castile won’t go any further. Pretty good effort and he exits with a lead. We’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back. [Applause] Colin Snder gets the call from the pen and this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Now here is Shay Langalers [Applause] way upstairs. And that is ball one. Still only one out here in the inning. Fast ball for a strike and it’s one and one. Activity in the bullpen. Trent Thornton appears to be getting loose. Spire a left-hander also throwing. [Applause] That one fouled off. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now batting and now the center fielder J it in. [Applause] That’s a ball. Went with the [Applause] sweeper. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied them up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That catches the top part of the zone. And the count one and two. That one is upstairs. [Applause] Next pitch just misses and the count is filled up. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. This one in the air center field. Rodriguez settles under it. That is the inning. A’s draw closer on this homer. It’s now a 43 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. JP Sears coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Well, one run game. Now it’s going to be Sant Taylor. He hit into a double play his first time up. And that’s in for a strike. Well, these Mariners showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. You have to be impressed with how they’re going about things at the plate. They’re drawing one walk per inning right now. I drew one walk per month during my career. Ball one. And yeah, a lot of the blame for those walks goes to the mouth. But I credit these guys for not getting anxious and fed up. They’re staying disciplined, which is easier said than done sometimes. [Applause] line drive and this might be trouble. Taylor races for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Oh, that’s how you respond. Lead off man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. JP Crawford up next for the Mariners. And that one hammered. That’s back. It’s a bomb. And they add a pair. It’s 63. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. And now it’s the switch inning second baseman Jorge Palano. Fast ball for a strike. That one to first and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. So up next, Julio Rodriguez. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. This one in the air. [Applause] Ursella calls it in. Two away. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well. and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Two outs, space is empty. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. First offering misses badly for ball one. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in here in the top half of inning number seven. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] And a ground ball to first. Can’t field it cleanly. The throw is still in time. And they do get the out, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now [Applause] 63 now. pitching for. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Gabe Spire. Gabe Spire. Now it’s the right fielder Z Brown. The Athletics in striking distance but have some work to do. Boog. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And that one is inside ball one. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and that’ll fall for a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Luis Urias up next for the A’s. He’s been a great free agent side. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game. Just off the inside edge. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go ball. [Applause] [Music] That one misses. And that’s ball three. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. on the ground. Two ball off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw. Curts in now. Takes ball one off the plate. In there at the knees and the count one and one. Leads off first with one away. swaying at a highf fly ball. Well struck way back there and that one is gone. He circles the bases. His first homer of the year. It’s 65. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance. They found a way to fight back big time. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Base is empty. One away. Gio Shell to the play. And that one off the outside edge. One ball. No strike. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Fast ball is outside [Applause] and that one fouled off. Looking to get the tying run on base. Blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. seen more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Gabe Spire is done and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for new pitcher now, Edward Bazardo. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. And the batter will be the shortstop, Jacob Wilson. [Applause] Breaking ball misses down and away. and that’s downstairs. Ball two. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Well, I would expect in this three- 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. [Applause] There’s the strike. Fouls one away. And now three and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it [Applause] again. Foul ball and it remains a full [Music] cow. Gets a piece and stays alive. Ninth pitch of the bat due next. And the tying run is on base. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very pretty. Two outs of the first. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Sodro. [Applause] Strike one. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So, if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit. But, you got to stay within yourself. Two outs. Swinging a foul out of play. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s tightened up a bit at 65 now. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Grant Holman. They know that he can get a right-hander out, but he’s in position to face a couple of lefties this inning. Coleman. [Applause] Well, one round game. Now it’s the DH Randy Rosena. Couple of walks and a strikeout. Just missed. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Mitch Spence appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Sterner getting loose as well. Fast ball for a strike. One ball, one strike. Next off is in for a strike. Fights it off. He’ll see another outside. That one missed. Full count. Good job to fight that one off. fouled. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. A good day for the on base percentage right there. Walk number three. And the free bags keep on coming. You’re down with OBP boo. And now it’s Rowdy TZ. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. A Rosena on at first. Nobody out. [Applause] And that’s way high. Going to count one and two. Here’s the pitch to TZ. Ground ball. Could be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one relay to first double play. Nice soft hands on the back end right there in the six hole. Starts the double play. It’s not an easy throw, but he puts it on the money. Really good job to get that double play started. [Applause] Here’s the left fielder, Miles Mastroy. And that’s through there for a strike. [Applause] Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. There’s a strike. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Breaking ball misses down and away. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Music] Two down to and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Two balls, two strikes and he grounds one to the right side. Whips it to first. Third out. Nobody left for Seattle as it remains a 6-5 ball game. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Trent Thornton. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. So, now here’s the DH Brett Rooker. He’s already homerred in this game. He’s a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today’s game. This guy hits for contact, so he delivers average. But there’s on base and slugging, too. Ground ball right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. [Applause] and a swing to miss. Early in the count, you have to be real careful because of that power. But then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him, he’s still very comfortable because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball. He’s a threat deep into the count as well. And one and [Applause] two, there’s a ball. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. [Applause] And that misses. And that’s ball one [Applause] and fouled off. pitch is in the dirt and it’s two in one. Two and one the count now. He hasn’t seen a fast ball yet, but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count. Pitch misses there. Now three and one. JJ Blade in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. One down, base is empty. Bounce to the right in plenty of time to first and that quickly two away. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Next up for the A’s, JJ Blade. 0 for three in this one. And a strike on the outside edge. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Music] swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that extends the inning back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Seth Brown up next for the A’s. One for three. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. [Applause] Move to first and he dives back in safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy. So you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score a ball in the gap. And the sweeper misses. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next offering is outside. [Applause] Here’s a two-1. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. [Applause] Leday off of first with two away. [Applause] And that’s outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Luis Rias in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact [Applause] here. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Walks out of the bullpin. Can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Trent Thornton out of the game. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. So they turn to their closer Andres Munoz. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. Andres Munoz. So the tying run in scoring position now. Luis Urias up next for the A’s. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Inside almost got him. [Music] Swings through that one for strike one. Action in the pen down there. Troy Taylor preparing to come on if needed. [Applause] So the tying run at second and a count one and two. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt onto first and they get out of the jam. Well done to finish off the strike out and end in the inning. A strand a couple still a tight ball game. It’s 6-5. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Mitch and we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a tongue. And stepping in for the Mariners, Ben Williamson. Ben Williamson out towards right center field. Leed sizes this one up and it’s caught for the out. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Up next for Seattle, right fielder Samad. So digging in, Samad Taylor. Spence in his second season, 26 years old, and he was a 10th round pick back in 2019, gets the slider in there for a strike. Now, just a submit mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on [Applause] it. Now a drag bun third base side and foul ball. One down. Base is empty. That misses now. One and two. And that’s outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Back up the middle and a base hit. Just kind of slice that one into center. Couple of hits in a row for him here. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Next to hit JP Crawford and that’s outside and it’s one and0. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Gets the outside corner with that one. [Applause] One rudder takes off swing and it’s a flare down the right field line. Bear ball headed for the plate. The relay dives in, beats the tag. He scores. It’s seven to five. Puts around the board and picks up an RBI. Nice line drive to the pole side right there. But he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. One gone, runner at first. Jorge Palano getting ready to hit. 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a strike out. And a big swing and a miss. One strike. Rolled to short. Could be two. Over to Aras. One onto first. Double play. And that’s the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 75. And we’re back. And now the first base, Nick Kurt. Base number 16. [Applause] Hey, look. We’ll see how it factors in. I just can’t emphasize how much that insurance run in the top of the ninth means. I mean, just such a big difference mentally when you’re chasing two runs instead of one. This one blasted the other way down the line and it’s a foul ball. There’s a guy right there that really trusts his hands. I mean, you have to wait a little bit longer with the breaking ball. He did that and he still had the power to drive it the other way. Just couldn’t keep it fair. swing and a miss and he struck him out and now just two outs away. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. The M’s trying to close out a two-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Next offering is down low. [Applause] 2-1 upstairs. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. The Mariners leading by two here in the last half of inning number nine. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. [Music] stays alive. The kick, the 3-2, and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Ninth pitch of the atbat. Due next. [Applause] Got him. Swinging for the strikeout. The A’s down to their final out now. Batting. And now the short stop, Jacob Wilson. Wilson. Hit to right and that should do it. And that is the ball game. Well, with this sixth win in a row, all of a sudden, you start to look around up and down the lineup to your left, to your right as a player, and you say, you know what, we’re good. Uh, we may have had some tough times earlier on, but this is a good team. And you start to expect this kind of play out of yourselves. We’ll see if this translates into a longer winning streak than it is right now. A 75 final score in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
