Sharks MISS OUT on Top Pick | Will Michael Misa Be the CONSOLATION PRIZE?
Michael Misa, get ready to learn San Jose. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the reef, also the co-host of Locked on NHL. I want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen. Proudly part of the Locked on Network. We cover your team every day. And if you want to be in every day, all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well. And we are reacting to the NHL draft lottery where the Sharks will be picking second uh at the end of June. Uh, so we’re going to be discussing kind of what this means for the Sharks, why they’re still going to have a pick at a super awesome player. Uh, and then Mike Greer met with the media for a little bit. We’ll kind of break down some of the, uh, topics that he talked about. So, uh, let’s get started with, of course, uh, the media reaction, right, with the Sharks picking second. And I was very calm all day. Got a little anxious around 3:30 today with it, but um, yes, the Sharks didn’t win the lottery. And we talked about it yesterday a little bit where it didn’t feel so pressing this year, right? Especially with um not a guy like Celebr Schaefer and Misa I think are both excellent prospects, but right there wasn’t a Connor Badard, there wasn’t a Min Celebr Schaefer or uh Michael Misa or everyone kind of considers the top two guys in their own little, you know, uh section above there. Um, and then kind of everything starts at number three here. So, um, it’s it’s it’s a it’s a fine position. Like, you’re still getting a great player. And we’re going to talk more about these two guys here in a little bit and why I I do think it’ll be most likely Misa. Um, because I think the Islanders need everything right now. So, um, but watching it on the t like the I hated it and I loved it at the same time the way they did it, right? Um, because you’re trying to, you know, like keep up with what’s going on and you’re, you know, like they’re showing the the balls and you got to wait 30 sec. 30 seconds is obnoxiously long time to wait between pingpong ball drawings, but I get it. You got to build the drama, you got to build the suspense, all that fun stuff, right? But um super fun and super annoying at the same time. So I assume they’re going to keep doing this because uh Gary Bman uh you know I I think you could tell he had a little bit of a a smile on his face with this the way they did it. So um and plus right you can’t say that it’s I guess it’s harder to say that it’s rigged um because they’re literally doing it right in front of you here. So, um, but for the Sharks, right, you are still in a great position to add a top end talent. And while I know a lot of Sharks fans, myself included, were think dreaming of Michael Misa roaming the the blue line with Matthew Schaefer or with sorry, um, but they were dreaming of Matthew Schaefer roaming the blue line with Sam Dickinson, right? And having those top end pieces. Um, you’re like having two ridiculous forwards in Celebrity and and Michael Misa. Like if Michael Misa is your 2C, awesome. And if you move Will Smith back to center, you can have a legitimate competition between Smith and and Michael Misa at center. And if Will Smith becomes a wing, cool. And Mike Greer, spoiler, said the Sharks are not in a position to be picking for need. uh they are picking the best player available on their board. Doesn’t matter if it’s your center, forward, winger, goalie, defenseman, whatever it is. Um if you pick a goalie at number two, uh we’re having a my career, you and I are going to be having a fight. I’m going to lose that fight, but we’re still having a fight. Um I’m joking. My career, like my career is really good at drafting. Like really good at drafting. Um I fully expect them to whatever they do it to um they’re going to get a great player, right? I think we can give Mike Ger the benefit of the doubt at this point uh with the way his drafts have started to come together and the talent that he has collected over the past couple seasons. Um, but yes, it’s it’s a little disappointing to not get that number one overall pick, but still after last year, right, you you got M you did the hard part last year and you got M celebrity and you definitely felt what as long as you’re in the top two and didn’t fall two, you felt like you’re going to get a great player and the Sharks are going to get a great player whether it is Schaefer or whether it is Misa and maybe the Islanders, you know, full on Galaxy brain it and pick somebody else and we know that uh James Hagens grew up as an Isles I think like as an Islanders fan and he was still considered like the number one pick and maybe the Islanders look at Schaefer and say the dude hasn’t played enough and there’s still plenty of path pathways to the Sharks potentially getting Matthew Schaefer. Maybe the Sharks trade up, which never happens. Um, like there’s I do believe like you’re you’re going to walk away from the draft feeling great about what you got. Maybe you have that what if you know type of of but there’s still other ways to fill the defensive needs and you know we will look at some of those throughout the rest of the summer here and how to kind of look at and focus on defenseman available at the end of the first beginning of the second and you know there there’s plenty of of other avenues to help fill that role but um like it’s again you got a good you’re going to get a good player. M like Mike Greer said like we are really excited about the player we’re going to be getting here at at at number two and you should be really excited about the player you’re going to get at number two. Um like if it is Michael Misa, Michael Misa is sick, man. Like an exceptional status player. Uh most likely going to be going to college next year. Just dominated the OHL. You saw what he did with Igor Shernov, right? Um, you know, the hope is he goes to college for a year and then he’s playing in the in the NHL after that and like perfectly perfectly happy with that because of of what uh what he will potentially bring to the San Jose Sharks, right? And then you don’t have to worry about is Will Smith a center or not, right? You know what’s great to have guys who can play center or guys who can play wing. Michael Misa played wing, transition back to center this year. Will Smith’s played center his whole life. Played really well on the like really well on the wing right now. Um, and guess what? Guys get hurt a lot. It happens, right? Flexibility among your top six forwards, super high-end top six forwards. That’s a great thing to have. So, um, and Smith and Misa are are very much different players. And you know, Misa is a guy who played in all situations uh for Sagenov. Um he is going to like be an excellent excellent fit for the Sharks and having two potentially 200 like we know Melbrini what Mlin Celebrini can do. Also really quick congratulations Melbrini on his CER trophy finalist. um him and Dustin Wolf and uh um Lane Hudson like congratulations to to Cellabrini there. Um having two 200 foot centers that you can like put out there in any situation because I do believe Michael Misa is going to be that guy for the Sharks as a 200 foot center. Sounds great to me, man. Sign me up. Sign me up for 15 years of that. Um, you want to have like look at how the Blackhawks won their trophies, right? Look at how like their Stanley Cups. Look how the Penguins won their Stanley Cups, right? Sydney Crosby uh Malin down the middle. Celebrini Misa down the middle still like a really really great way to go. So while again disappointing you may not get Schaefer, I do think there’s other avenues to fill that and right finding a finding a two se who would be probably a one se on most teams behind celebrini that’s a that’s a really nice problem to have if you’re the San Jose Sharks. So uh we’ll talk about kind of the you know how the Sharks could potentially end up with with Schaefer or Misa a little bit here. We’ll talk kind of about what the Islanders prospect pool looks like and why I do think it’s going to be ultimately safer for them and then we’ll get into Mike Greer’s media availability here uh in just one second. Uh make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Uh plenty of great stuff coming up over the summer, right? You have a second overall pick, $40 million in cap space. Uh, a fun and frisky team in the San Jose Sharks. So, we’re gonna be, of course, keep an eye on how Mike Greer continues to build this bad boy. Um, as again, we enter our fun and frisky phase. Make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast and of course, subscribe on YouTube as well. So, um, what do the Isisles do? Because right the the whole thing is based on what the isles do and while again the issue could galaxy brain they don’t have a GM right now. Lamarello’s he’s hanging around in in the in the in the dark back corner right doing Lamarello things but they’re going to hire a new GM here who’s got the first overall pick. Um this roster’s got a bajillion old people on it. Um and it has they’re legitimately if not one of the worst um prospect pools in the NHL, right? Um just what this team is right now. So, you know, they they did get like last year they they drafted Cole Eerman um kind of, you know, in the mid round, but like they don’t really have much uh in terms of just prospects that you get super jazzed up around. like this team has been trying to win um a Stanley Cup. They’re you know a very old roster right now. Um you know like even just looking you know like looking at you know like Lee Anders, Kyle Palary. I know Pal Mary needs like a new deal. Jean Gabriel Pgo, Anthony Duclair, like Anthony Duclair is a spring chicken at age 29 for for this team. Like they even their like rookie uh was like 26. Like they’re like this is a very old team that needs some injection of talent. Um, so you could look at them and just be like they they’re just going to draft whatever the best player is. But, um, you do think for for them, right, where it’s like they they have so many potential holes where it’s going to be the legitimately like the best player available for them. And um, me or you know, Schaefer 100% like is the potential best player in this draft. So, um there is of course the questions about Schaefer of you know the dude just can’t stay healthy right now um because you know he he played 20 some odd games last year um and hasn’t played a game this entire calendar year um but like this team definitely needs an injection of of talent. So, um, and they haven’t picked like a defenseman in a while when it comes to like top end picks. Uh, like last year they picked, uh, Cole, like they did get a second round pick last year. Uh, Jesse Pulkin, uh, who they picked second uh, in the 54th overall pick in the second round last year. He’s already signed his his ELC. Um, but like it’s, you know, this is a team that definitely could use a defenseman, like just any sort of defenseman um on on on the roster or in the building at some point here. Um, so I do think that’s the direction they go is Schaefer, right? And again, they could surprise us and as we get closer to the draft, we’ll know more, maybe know more. Is a course very quiet and secretive about what they do, right? Uh Lou Lamarello, old school guy like that. Like you he’s he’ll bury somebody be like under a turnpike if if they kind of leak out what they’re going to do. But um you’re like Misa is going to be like if it is Schaefer and you know you the Sharks are going to be in a position to pick Misa and maybe they look at Higgins and I know Hagens is um you know like was considered the number one kind of prospect coming into it. We talked about Porter Martone yesterday if the Sharks were to get number three why I think Porter Martone is the guy. But, you know, like Mike Ger was asked about Misa and he, you know, said it’s a guy they’ve been watching since last year when they were, you know, scouting Zane Perk, of course, um, when the Sharks had one of, you know, a second top 15 pick or what, I think was the pick 13 or whatever, 14 or whatever they got from from the Penguins, right? And they eventually moved up to number 11 and eventually picked Sam Dickinson, Preco going uh, number nine to the Calgary Flames. But like I I do I think it’s really clear and there’s going to be people who are going to say well me you know Mike is just gonna pick the biggest dude and stuff and Mis is like a good size. Yes. He’s not Porter Martone big and and stuff and but like Michael Misa is like a like a legit like dude, right? And especially if you look at the way that, you know, when it comes to size, he’s 6’1. Um, you know, 185 lbs or so, like he’s got a big enough frame where you feel like you’re going to like he’s not a small dude. This isn’t like you’re drafting, you know, like he’s bigger than than Will Smith. He’s bigger than William Mlin. He’s bigger than Mlin Celebrating. Um, and you have big wingers, right? You look at Chernov, you look at Musty. Um, like you have some big winger. You look at Casper Holston, you have some big wingers in the the pipeline and that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to add big wingers elsewhere. Like um I do think Misa had like I think it’s going to be Misa as the pick and we’ll see as the process bears out, but um we’ve seen I like Michael Mis who can play all 200 feet. He can score, he can pass. Um he’s very like there’s a reason why he was a like a such a highly touted prospect coming into the OHL that received exceptional status. If you don’t know exceptional status means uh basically allowed him to play at a younger age like they only give that to certain people. So, um I think he’s uh I think he they said he’s usually the seventh or the ninth like exceptional status player like and and like they don’t just hand this thing out to all willy-nilly. He already has three full seasons in the OL right before his draft year. He already has three full seasons. So, he really only has to play one more season. Like, if he doesn’t go to college, he only has to play one more OHL season. Then he can play in the AHL if he if he wants to. Um he even like has a little bit of a later birthday of February. Um like Misa’s and again he scored 62 goals in 65 games and 134 points um this season. I know the playoffs weren’t great and you you know he was banged up in there. He only scored he had two goals, one assist in four games in the playoffs this year, but um definitely like wasn’t the greatest performance but definitely was not 100% during the playoffs. But um yeah, Michael Mis is a really great consolation prize. Uh if you’re not getting Matthew Schaefer, like uh our our good bald friend Tony Ferrari uh sent me a message. Um let’s see. It says, so yeah, he said, “Congrats on Misa and Celebrini down the middle and having the best center do in the NHL in a couple of years, lol.” That’s from our bald friend. Um, yeah, Tony Ferrari. So, yes, Sharks in a great position here. So, uh, we will, of course, debate this and we’ll do the Michael Misa, like we did a Michael Misa episode. We’ll do Michael Misa deep dives. Uh, we’ll continue to look at other guys in that area, like that area, um, for the Sharks. Look at if they should potentially trade. Like, there’s plenty of meat on the bone when it comes to the second overall pick. So, uh, we’re not going to do the whole off season today, but I do want to talk about Mike Greer’s press availability. So, uh, where we did give an update on Eklan and talked about an Equin contract extension coming up. Looking for a snack that’s both delicious and nutritious? So, general manager Mike Greer did meet with the media via Zoom um after, of course, and most of the questions were about, you know, kind of trying to prize some information from him and stuff about like what are you going to do in number two, right? And he was very uh like Mike is not going to give you anything if he doesn’t want to give you anything. So, um but right, he’s very much like we’re going to pick a good player. We really excited about the player we’re going to pick there. Um he was asked questions about Misa who again everyone kind of has ranked at that number two spot there. Um and I do again I do feel like that’s the direction I feel like Misa is a player that Mike Greer would covet right and you look at Will Smith right not known for his not known for his defense but a special talent. Quint Musty right got at 26 not known you know for like but there’s special qualities about Quint Musty. Michael Bisa extremely special qualities about about him and what he does and what he would bring to the sharks organization. So um but some of the other things so he did give an update on William. So William did successfully have uh exploratory wrist surgery. Uh the timeline is about 3 months. So going to be out for worlds of course. Uh is expected to be back for training camp. So, I think uh if you didn’t see it right, it was circulating. Uh he at one of the preliminary games um blade like skate blade to the wrist, right? It looked bad, right? Like a Vander Kane type of of situation here. Like it’s these things always scare you, but sounds like they they kind of dodged a bullet here where you know they had surgery here. They just want to make sure everything looks good and everything’s cleaned up and every like that. And he should be available for training camp. So, good news on that front that he will be available. I did ask following up on William Mecklan with his contract to extension uh like with his William Mean is eligible for a contract extension starting July 1st. he sells one more year on his LLC, but you can sign a contract extension basically anytime after you hit that like one year, you can start to, you know, do that. So, I did ask him kind of what the plan was there and he said they’re going to like he was very, you know, we’re going to keep all of our options open, you know, whether it’s a bridge deal or long-term, etc., etc. But he did meet with William Ecklund’s agent recently um in Dallas. So discussion has been started which is good right now and I I followed up and I was like you know how important is it to kind of get this done especially with how you traded away so many players William kind of that first foundational piece etc etc and he talked about like how you know you you want to start to build something here and Eklan has been kind of that first guy and you know you don’t want to just keep trading away and you want to start to be able to lock up some of your pieces long term So, good news there. We will explore this topic more in the coming weeks. But, um, for all those people saying the Sharks are going to trade William Ecklland, like no, William’s going to stay in maybe not July 1st. I’m just guessing here, but maybe not July 1st, but I do think Eklan gets his long-term contract sometime this year. So, um, because he is 100% worth it. And right, we saw Matthew Coronado get signed. Uh, we did see, you know, like Matty Paneers from his draft class has been signed. We’ve seen some of these other pieces get signed. Ekkan, I would want to get this done sooner rather than later because the contracts are just going to get more and more expensive. And Ekwin’s the type of guy you want to build around. And I think Ecwin is a guy who could potentially be wearing a letter A on his jersey u on the front of his jersey next season. So, um yes, I I just get it done. Show show the or show everyone you’re ready to start stop messing around. Start start building something. So, um yes. So, he did talk about that. Um people did ask if he’s going to be willing to trade the second overall pick and Mike Greer did also say like he’s going, you know, explore all options, etc., etc. He’s gonna say that, right? Um, again, I he someone did ask about potentially trading up for the first overall pick and he said he hasn’t really thought about it much, which maybe I’ll give you half credit on that one, Mic. I bet you’ve you’ve explored that already. So, u, but as we kind of highlighted it already with the Islanders, who knows, right? Because the Islanders do need so much stuff right now. like would they be interested in picking a you know sliding back a a spot, picking up some other assets and then being able to draft a top end center, right? Assuming the Sharks go get Schaffer. Um you know, go getting a top end center, which they don’t really have in their like Islanders eat everything right now. So, um yeah. Um we’ll we’ll explore that. But again, like I just don’t see G a new GM coming in and like a brand new GM coming and trading down out of the first overall pick seems uh seems a little crazy, but crazier things have happened. So, um yeah, I’m Yeah, we’ll see. So, but overall though, like it did seem like the Sharks are, you know, they’re going to be looking at at also trade their options. He didn’t say a trade, but he said they’re going to be looking at their options with the Dallas pick, right? Um, and they’re still kind of seeing where where that lands, of course, as Dallas is still in the playoffs right now after their uh very fun great weekend of hockey, but very fun uh comeback win. Um, so I’m still in the I don’t think the Sharks make a pick with that pick camp pick with that pick camp. I do think they trade it for a more established or soon to a upandcoming NHL player. as my guess. And especially if you miss out on Matthew Schaefer, which we believe the Sharks are probably gonna miss out on Matthew Schaefer, I think the urgency to use that Dallas pick to help you find a def young defenseman who can be part of your long-term future, I think it just goes up right now. And I do think Greer no noted trader Mike Greer uh will probably do something with that pick to try to again um fill a need and I do think that’s what the Sharks are going to do. So if you end up with this offseason where maybe you don’t get Schaefer, but you do get Michael Misa and then whatever that pick is with the Dallas pick as the center part of a go get a you know young defenseman. Not a bad start to your off seasonason if you’re if you’re my career in the San Jose Sharks. So uh we’ll be back. Um so this is Tuesday’s episode is going to be coming out early or late Monday afternoon. This will be Tuesday’s episode. We’ll be back on Wednesday. We have a draft profile coming for you. Uh our good friend Steven Ellis from the Daily Face Off joins and we talk about three players that he really likes at that end of the first or yeah end of the first beginning of the second. So make sure you guys are following along uh wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at Lock Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Till tomorrow. Bye friends. [Music]

Misa at 2C = great depth down the middle.
If the Islanders really want Misa, but know the Sharks want Schaefer, they can trade down with the Sharks for the #2 and Dallas #1. Islanders get another 1st round pick for nothing.
Is it weird I want NYI to draft Schaefer so CHI can’t have Misa? It’s exactly what Bedard needs
The only trade down I think makes sense to me right now is to send #2 to Detroit for #13 and Sandin-Pelikka. Then try to move up a little from #13. Detroit needs a true center of the future and the Sharks need that RD
Eklund. 8×7.2
Honestly the top 5 guys all seem like they have similar floors and ceilings. At the end of the day we’re getting a high end top 6 player. Can’t ever complain about that.
I just didn’t like how they did it with the time clock. Just pull the ping pong balls to see who picks first.
Islanders fan here… I hope we get Misa, we have been lacking goal scoring for a very long time, I don't think and I hope the islanders don't pick Schafer I really hope the pick Misa 100%
Would you give the islanders a top prospect and the number two for the one
Misa is a better 2 way player than Smith. Sucks to miss out on Schaefer but NYI might take a center instead since they have no 1C in pipeline while Dobson showed sign of 1D previously. NYI also had a hard time scoring and Misa is closer to making the NHL. They also have a new stadium to fill. Lastly, Eklund is a trade piece if they take Misa with Mac/Smith already. Don't get too attached to Eklund.
So!!! Excited about this! I low key have wanted Misa over Schaefer all season anyway, so this is best case scenario in my mind… and if the islanders take Misa… non-issue taking Schaefer
Blessing in disguise. Won't be any regrets of picking the wrong player if we had 1st pick.
Only way I’ll be pissed is if they take martone or frondell at 2.. don’t be cute it’s misa:/ Schaefer or bust
islanders are taking misa
I think we need to forget about shaefer. The islanders have ritchie and eiserman for their future forward core, they need a schaefer on the blue line.
Nevermind. However, having misa would be amazing alongside smith celebrini and eklund. It allows either snith or misa to revert to rw, id prefer smith to play on the wing.
Michael Misa will be a better pro than Matthew Schaefer! Yeah I said it
Sharks gonna have absolutely zero defense for years to come
I wonder if Boston whose prospect pool is lacking would trade #7 for all our 25 picks other than #2. That is a lack 1st and 2 2nds plus a 3rd, 2 4ths, a 5th, and a 7th.
Misa and likely Eklund would be a homerun. Boston likely says no though.
Thank you JD for the awesome content.
Just to get an idea (and just for fun): Where would Misa go in 2024 draft and in 2023 draft?
My 5 year old son slit his wrist open about a year ago when climbing over a fence and he fell onto a rubble pile. It was the scariest day of my life and I still think about it hourly about how blessed he is to be alive and how he didn't hit anything serious.
It is a miracle that William Eklund is alive. Truly a miracle. Forget the sport and the money and wins. This guy could have died and it would have been heart breaking for his family, his friends, the Sharks, and the hockey world. Whatever your beliefs are, this is a miracle and I thank God this dude is ok.
(I haven't even listened yet, I heard about Eklund last night at work and couldn't stop thinking about it. Maybe because I have seen a wrist slice first hand, but I am truly grateful he is alive and had to share it somewhere. Thanks.)
I really see a world where the Islanders are wanting to prioritize Hagens. He grew up a major Islanders fan and will likely want to spend his whole career there, which is a major concern for Islanders fans after seeing Tavares not be as loyal. I could see a very likely world where Chicago offers some picks to move up to #1 so they can get their guy in Misa, the Islanders drop to #3 so they can guarantee their guy in Hagens while also adding a lot of draft stock to help build up their pipeline. Everyone wins in that situation so I would not be surprised at all if a move like that happens on draft day.
I think Misa is gone for the Sharks. These days, teams draft the best player available and worry about how they fit the team later. And while defensemen are key, especially two-way defensemen, the nature of the game makes it harder to create a play than to disrupt a play, so elite offensive talent is at a premium. I predict 27 June 2025 will go like this:
NY Islanders: Michael Misa
San Jose Sharks: Matthew Schaefer
Chicago Blackhawks: Porter Martone
While that's my prediction, I would not be completely shocked that if Misa is gone, the Sharks go with Martone.
The isles aren’t taking a 5 year defensive guy to develop
Passing on miss because he’s not 6’3-5 would be wild
Could you imagine if we somehow get Gavin next year
Why are Sharks fans so concerned with what Chicago is doing? So many comments here about Chicago…that's weird guys. This pick comes down to Schaefer or Misa. Whoever the Islanders don't select the Sharks will. Martone isn't on their level, Hagens isn't on their level, and if you've followed them all year you know this.
I'm not convinced Misa will be the slam dunk 2nd OA pick. I believe it will be between him and Martone.
