thing in two just more consistent is kind of the way Pete explained how things are going right now and that is talk to any baseball player. They’ll give you cliches but one of the cliches that they actually mean is I want to be more consistent. That’s the hardest part about this game. 02 Allen misses high with a fast ball and it’s a ball and two strikes. A lot of people in that Mets clubhouse coaches think that what Pete’s doing is going to stick. the one-two down and in and it’s two balls in two strikes. And here he is in a two strike count where as we highlighted last night when he went deep 425 ft it was with two strikes. He is unafraid of the count and that’s something that he told you last night on the field post game is that when I’m searching for a mistake pitch it could come with two strikes. Got to be ready for that. the wind up and Gallon’s 2-2 fouled back to the screen and so Alonzo continues to battle one for Zack Gallon making his eighth start so far not Gallon-like numbers two and four with a 493 erra but he was good against the Mets 2-2 breaking ball is low and Alonzo’s run at full mentioned the outing at City Field where Sodto got him he only allowed one other hit over six innings struck out eight. He was in command. That knuckle curve was filthy. And that’s what Gallon can do. The payoff swing and a miss. Knuckle curve puts away Alonzo and the Mets who go down one, two, three in the top of the first. Arizona coming up from Chase Field on Odyssey Mets radio. David Peterson day for the Mets as we go to the bottom of the first inning in Arizona. Peterson facing Catel Marte. Switch hitter batting right and the first win from Peterson as a sinker missing inside for ball one. Marte Corbin Carroll Randall Gritick reading Peterson the wind up in the 10. Little ground ball up the first baseline. Peterson off the mound fields and just tags Marte halfway up the line. So two pitches and one out. There’s the one unassisted to retire Marte who is now 11 for 37 and coming back from a strained left hamstring. Give the Mets defensive alignment brought to you by Orland and Cohen Orthopedic Group experiencing orthopedic pain. We’ve got specialist for that. Brandon Nmo in left, Tyrone Taylor in center, Juan Sto in right, Ventos, Lindor McNeel, Alonzo go third to first and Alvarez catches Peterson. No score bottom one. Here’s Corbin Carroll. First pitch swinging. He grounds it right to second. A wicked hop, but McNeel handles and throws out Carol. Two down. It was a one hopper. A scorcher off the bat. And then a short hop. Short in a sense that it was close to McNeel’s body, but it went right up to that chin rather quickly. Wicked indeed. That was a tremendous job by Jeff McNeil to stay in front of that ball and then adjust his body at the last second to lean back and out of the way. Really nicely done. So now Randall Gritchuk in this bottom of the first with the roof open tonight. Not a cloud in that Arizona sky up overhead. 75 degrees. First pitch. Gritic takes a strike and it’s nothing and one. Grick’s been around for a long time, but one thing that is his mo is he’s usually pretty good against left-handed pitching on a team that is not good against lefties. The 01 swing and a miss at 93 and it’s 0 and two. He has the sixth highest slugging percentage in the game against lefties since 2022. That’s a list that features a lot of good names. Austin Riley, Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, Riddle Gridic is right in there. 02 pitched in tight has the ball in two strikes. But Arizona as a team, we mentioned how good this lineup is. Lefties sometimes can be their their kryptonite. They have lost seven of 10 this year against lefties. The one two got him looking outside corner stamp the outside edge with 95 miles an hour and David Peterson has a one two3 first inning. We’re at Chase Field just getting started. We go to the second moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one in right down the line. It may go crazy folks. outside it. The MLB Network podcast presented by New Diamondbacks nothing after Zack Allen went one, two, three against Lindor Sto and Alonzo. It’s starting Marte, Brandon Emmo, and Mark Ventos against the New Jersey native Zack Gallon. Seventh year in the major leagues for Gallon. First pitch to Marte is grounded to first. Naylor’s got it. Underhand flips, but high. Gallon recovers and steps on the bag in time for the out. A little bit too much of a an oomph toss there from Naylor, but Gallon recovers. And that’s four in a row retired to start the game for Gallon. Do did he do we have to be somewhere later? Well, there’s a 1240 game tomorrow. Okay, so sleep fast. I was going to say Peterson threw about, you know, two pitches in that first inning to get to get out of dodge. Guys were swinging early and against Gallon. That is what the Mets are doing. Peterson threw seven pitches in that first inning. And Marte grounds out on the first pitch. He sees here. So now Brandon NMO batting left hitting a 217. Seven homers and 23 RBI’s. Climbs in from that left side. Third baseman Suarez is in again just as he was against Lindor. Pitch misses high with ball one. But you know what? When you’re facing guys like Allen and Peterson that are just going to fill up the strike zone sometimes early in the count, that’s going to be the best pitch you’re going to get. The wind up and the one has a breaking ball in for a strike. A cutter and it’s one and one in this second inning powered by Invesco QQQ, the official ETF of the New York Mets. Tomorrow’s innovation awaits with Invesco QQQ. Let’s rethink possibility. Things moving a little fast for Brandon NMA who waited until that clock got down to 10 and took his time out. Gallon is already on top of that perch looking in and the 1-1 misses high. Two balls in a strike. Mentioned Gallon’s a New Jersey native. He was drafted by St. Louis out of the University of North Carolina back in 2016. He’s out of the Summerdale, New Jersey area. There’s the 2-1 popped up foul over our heads to our left and it’s two and two on NMO. Funny thing about Gallon though, New Jersey guy, South Jersey right there in Philly’s country. He grew up a Cardinal fan. And then the Cardinals drafted him. Two-2 sky in the air to center field. This sends Hamson back couple of steps. Makes the catch well shy of the track and there’s two down. There was a lot made of when Gallon faced the Phillies in the 2023 NLCS. South Jersey kid coming back to pitch against the team that he grew up rooting for. Not quite. Uh-uh. Here’s Mark Ventos. Top of the second. Mets and Diamondbacks are scoreless. Vientos hit 220. Four homers and 15 RBI’s. Righty to righty. First pitch down and away. One ball and no strikes. Well, as the story goes, when Gallon was young, Phillies had won the World Series in 2008. It was I think a Friday the day of the World Series parade. He wanted to go and his mother said, “You can’t go. You’re not a Phillies fan.” Yeah. And so he didn’t go. The 10 pitch, swing, and a miss. And it’s one and one. Now, if I’m Zach Allen, I’m doing my best to just get out of school that day. It was Halloween also. Yeah, I need to go to school. But mom said, “No, got to stick to his values.” The 1-1 line towards center field sharply. Hamson over to his left makes the catch. Side retired. Easy peasy there for Zack Gallon. And we’re done with an inning and a half. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. It may go crazy folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the start of three to two. The home play the wizard. The next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Your day in baseball starts with MLB Central. Let’s get it started. Lead off your morning with in-depth breakdowns. Perfect balance. Boom. Interviews with the players. Get back to the fast ball. I know what that passion feels like and a little bit of everything else. The window seats are the baseball day begins with MLB Central weekdays at 10 a.m. Eastern only on MLB Network. If you’re not watching this show, you’re the Peterson facing AU Suarez, a righty batter, big power hitter. First pitch, swing and a miss at a high fast ball. That is nothing and one. The meter is running, boys. Let’s keep it moving. It’s been that kind of night for both teams. Swing early, swing often. Here’s the 01 swings and pops it up toward Alonzo at first. Pete waving his arms. McNeel gets to his shoulder, but it is Pete Alonzo making the catch. Two pitches and one out in this inning for Peterson. These guys are treating this like it’s a getaway day. Last day of spring training, last day of the season. Yeah, they’re moving quick here. And so we better tell you that this second inning is powered by Invesco QQQ, the official ETF of the New York Mets. Tomorrow’s innovation awaits with Invesco QQQ. Let’s rethink possibility. Invesco Distributors Incorporated. One out for Josh Naylor. Lefty to lefty. First pitch is fouled at home plate. going after that one and it’s nothing and one. Peterson had a seven pitch first inning just kind of highlight how quickly things are moving here and he also struck out Randall Grichuk. That was the first m strike out of the game brought to you by Wik Realtors. Don’t settle for a good agent. Go for a great one at wert.com. Naylor a 310 hitter pinch stairs had a strike over the inside corner. A good look at Sinker and it’s nothing and two and that 310 batting average rings in at 310 which is sixth best in the National League. 857 OPS but he was kind of at the center of a little bit of I wouldn’t call controversy but had a lot of heads spinning last night with a base running blunder on that ball in the eighth that Auo Suarez crushed to center. O2 hit him sinker that ran in. He dropped the bat and he’s holding his hand running up the first baseline, gritting his teeth in pain. He is squeezing and pulling his fingers with the other hand. He gets all the way to first where Dave McKay, the first base coach, puts his arm around him. All the while the trainer with towel in hand and Tory Lavell run out to go check on him. And we’ll check the replay here. Oh, it got him right on the fingers, the bottom part of the bat. There is absolutely no protection there. That cannot feel good at all. He’s almost like he’s doing a little dance over it for his base in pain as he’s extended that hand for inspection. Now there is nowhere to hide there. Especially against Peterson, you know, as a lefty is going to pitch you inside. You’re expecting that call that front hip sinker. It’s going to start at your body and then move over the inside corner. So knowing that even if the pitch starts at your body, you can’t really move because you know it might come over the strike zone. So Naylor is kicking his feet out. He is really in some pain right now. Head down as everybody’s surrounding him. Even Pete Alonzo is kind of getting in and checking in on the situation. But he’s wriggling over there. Yeah, he is in a lot of pain and I I mean, you hope he’s okay, but you can see it in his eyes when you look at the the screen from SNY. He is almost like he’s welling up in tears, but it’s more of just simple pain that can’t leave his body. Peterson’s going to take a couple pitches here while they tend to nail her. This is taking a long time. Gets to a point where what are they going to wait for here if he’s in this much pain? Got to take him out. Yeah, it almost seems like he’s fighting to stay in and he’s going to. I’m shocked. So Naylor is staying in the trainer and manager Tory Lavell jog back over to the third base dugout again with these things. It could almost be a matter of time where he gets to the dugout after this inning ends and we may not see him come back out for the next inning. Who knows? That hurt. That certainly did. I I’m I’m incredibly impressed that he’s trying to gut that out there because that there’s no way that feels good. So, game continues. First base runner for both sides. One-on-one out for Lordis Guriel Jr. First pitch swing and a miss. High fast ball at 92. And it’s nothing and one. Scoreless game. Bottom of the second inning. Gurielle at 202 with five homers and 18 RBI’s. 0 for four last night. Tall righty batter with those socks hiked up to his knees. 01 swinging a slam towards center field. Taylor over toward right center makes the catch and fires back in. We are coming to you live from the Bigalow T broadcast booth. Bigalow T grab a mug and te proudly and just to complete the thought again last night with Josh Naylor. Bases loaded. The ball AO Suarez hit to center field. It was off the center field wall. Runner at third scored. Runner at second scored. Naylor was at first. He had figured he’d at least get to third. Well, he read it totally wrong. Only made it to second. The Mets were able to strand him. That was a huge play last night. So, he’s still at first. And here’s Purdomo batting right. He’s a switch hitter. First pitch is in for a strike. 91 mph sinker. Purdomo, the switch hitter batting right, hitting at 293. Five homers, 29 RBI’s. Those RBI totals good for sixth in baseball. Here’s the 01 grounded foul to the right and that’s nothing and two. Now Peterson on this mound where last August he had a great outing kind of a much needed outing to salvage the season. It’s a road trip when the Mets went to San Diego. Lost that series on a Jackson Merrill walk-off homer. came here needing to win a lot of games and Peterson had one of the biggest starts of the year and last year was really the best we had seen David Peterson coming back from that that hip surgery and he’s continued it this year as Pat told you he’s been pitching great filling up the strike zone not messing around with walks and two with two outs pitch home grounded right back to the mound high reach for Peterson at 66 frames got it runs halfway to first and flips to Alonzo to end the inning. No runs, no hits. A hit batsman and one left. Two scoreless in Off base is coming in a brand new format. Out of play and the counts nothing and one. I’m going to need you to make a better effort on that one. Are you kidding? I’m on my feet leaning halfway over. I was ready to dive out the window for that. Oh, one check swing upstairs. One ball, one strike. You could have played the ricochet better. Going try to do my best. Johnny Dascow. He’s a booth. They caught one in Chicago. One-1 swung on. Broken bat flare towards second and caught. I can tell Marte for out number one. So that’s seven up and seven down to start the night for Zack Gallup. He swings the first pitch and misses. This is nothing and one. And this is a lightning fast pace. Guys are attacking early and often. 01 outside one ball, one strike. Alvarez batting .281 with a home run and seven RBI’s one from Gallon. Swing a ground ball through the hole on the right side. A base hit. So that’s the first hit of the night for the Mets. first base runner and it’s a one out single by Francisco Alvarez which brings up center fielder Tyrone Taylor’s healthcare would like to remind you that they’re not just care they are care that moves you centershealthcare.com scoreless game top three here in Arizona and Tyrone bats with a runner at first base and one out leads off first pitch pitch. Breaking B drops in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. It’s a nasty knuckle curve by Zack Gallon. Tyrone swinging the bat very well. Last eight games, 12 for 22. That’s a 545 average. Fouls the next pitch off. It’s snowballs and two strikes. A home run, three RBI’s, five extra base hits, and an OPS just south of 1500. Well, this pregame just feels more fluid at the plate. 02 swing a broken background ball towards six. Marte has it. Troubles it to Purdomo at second for one. Return to first in time. Double play. Carlos Mendoza does have the stop sign up. John Given is on the phone. Wait to see if the Mets will challenge. And they will. Driving backs ready to leave the field. Tyrone Taylor was not. He stood at first base the whole time. It’s a bang bang play to the naked eye. It not Taylor got his foot in there, but we shall see. Ryan Blakeley made the call. We’re getting the slow-mo look at it now. York is challenging. Oh, yeah. He’s in there. Safe. And for the Mets to use their challenge this early in the game, you have to imagine that Brittle in the squad pretty confident in this decision. And I’m with you, it does look like Tyrone’s foot hit the bag before it’s nestled into the glove of Josh Naylor, who has remained in the game, which is pretty impressive. I got hit by the Peterson pitch on his hand. Just hit a little too slow to double up Tyrone Taylor. Of course, if they do overturn this, and here goes Marvin Hudson. Oh, Marvin, after review, the call on the field is overturned. The runner is safe. York will retain their count. So, the Mets win the challenge and the inning continues. And it flips the order for Francisco Lindor. How many times have we said this season that plays like that to extend innings have been so impactful for the Mets. Tyrone has been at the center of a lot of them. Beating out double play balls, beating out ground balls for infield hits. Here’s Lindor. takes the first pitch off the plate away. It’s one ball and no strikes. Francisco’s 0 for one. He grounded out to third base back in the first inning against Gallon. Taylor leads off first. Pretty big lead as Gallon sets. One out upstairs. Two balls, no strikes. We were talking with Francisco Lindor a couple of weeks ago postgame. He said, “This is a team that plays 27 outs. They’re never going to give them away. Two 0 upstairs. Three balls, no strikes. And you think about just how an inning can change just by beating out a double play. Gallon misses here. All of a sudden, he got first and second for Juan Soda. Gorless game. Top three, runner at first. Three 0 pitch. Andor taking all the way. It’s ball four. And that’s a first and second with two outs. So now an opportunity to strike first here in the third. Soto’s 0 for one. He grounded out to second base back in the first. First real chance for the Mets tonight against Zack Gallen who set down the first seven batters that he faced. Zodto batting just a buck 35 with runners in scoring position. First pitch off the plate away. Change up missed. It’s one ball and no strikes. Josh Naylor is playing behind Lindor over at first. So he is getting a walking lead. Pass the cut out. One pitch swing and a foul tip. Galls one and one. Sodto went deep against Gallon. Part of a two home run game back on May 1st. That was a 4-2 Mets loss. 40th pitch of the night for the right-hander. Jacks on second. 1-1. Breaking ball low. Two balls, one strike. And Pete Alonzo Zande. I don’t know how many chances the Mets are going to have against Zack Allen in this game. Feels like one that they need to cash in on. Taylor’s the runner over at second. Lindor’s the runner at first. Two outs, two-1. Suana Tapper first base side foul. It’s two and two. Sodto last night walked twice and doubled. One for three overall. Two into the count, two on, two outs. Pitch from Gallop. Low. Three balls, two strikes. That’ll start the runners. Mike Sarball, the third base coach, telling Tyrone Taylor, make sure Gallon comes home. Peromo is in his back pocket up the middle. Gallon sets. Runners go. Payoff pitch downstairs. Ball four. Backto back walks and the bases are loaded for Pete Alonzo. Sodto doing that patented little stare down at Zack Gallon just to say, “All right, don’t want to mess with me.” That’s the kind of thing that feeds somebody’s confidence. And here comes Brian Kaplan, the pitching coach. And you know, it is again still something that Sodto’s up, but the way that Pet is swinging the bat, you you you’re almost saying to to the world, I’d rather face Alonzo than Sodto right now. That’s that’s a hard reality to face. But the thing is is that really it comes down to pick your poison. Who do you feel like you might have a better arrangement against? So’s a lefty. maybe want to work around him and and take your chances with the righty, but hard to take your chances the way Pete’s swinging the bat. Pete hit the Titanic home run last night, 425 ft. That came off Ryan Nelson on a pitch at the top of the zone with two strikes. Gallon got Pete on strikes back in the first. Scoreless game top three. Base is loaded. This rally started because Tyrone Taylor lanked down a wouldbe inning ending double play ball. Base is full. First pitch to Alonzo. High and tight. He’s got to bend back it out of the way. 95 up and in. It’s one and0. Pete with nine homers, 33 RBI’s. 10 out and tight. Two balls, no strikes. We talk about the Mets struggles with runners in scoring position as a team. They are batting 229. Pete, however, 412. Breaking ball drops in two and one. Two and one the count. Bases fall, two outs. That’ll start the runners up. And Alonzo asks for time. Carlos Mendoza wasn’t happy, but it did appear that that one got the top of the zone. Three and two. The count. Taylor from third. Lindor from second. Sodto from first. They go 3-2 pitch. Back. It’s a fast ball right down the middle. My best against your best. 96 from Zack Allen. Lonzo probably wouldn’t mind seeing the same exact thing right here. Gallon ready. Runners go. 3-2 pitch upstairs. Ball four. Alonzo wins the battle. He walks in a run and the Mets take a one- nothing lead and the bases are still loaded. Three consecutive walks and for Pete Alonzo it is RBI number 34. He has now tied to Oscar Hernandez for the major league lead. Tell you what, it’s really hard to not stretch for both Alonzo and Sodto, but they did a nice job being patient. Here’s Marte. Takes the first pitch. Breaking ball. Bottom of the zone. Called strike. 0 and one. And either guy trying to get too big. Be the hero. Just take what’s there. Bring in a run. The 01. Marte. Check. Swing. Ball. Strike. Either way. Nothing in two. Martee’s 0 for one. He ground it out to first. One- nothing Mets. Top three 02. Strike three called. Got him looking. Boom. A 96 mileph fast ball at the bottom of the zone. And Gallon limits the damage in the third for the Mets. A run on one hit three. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Herrera walks, one out, base runner, flips the line up for Catel Marte. And I said, “Yeah, like it a lot.” He said, “You like the combination?” I said, “I do.” again with the biggest smile. He goes, “It’s mint.” So I said, “Is there any sort of regulation as to what you have to wear?” And he said, “As long as 50% of it is Mets colors, the rest can be whatever he wants.” Here’s Catel Marte. First pitch is in for a strike, it’s 0 and one. So he has five different sets of gear. He said his favorite is the ones that he wore at home, which is like a cream and orange. The 01. It’s low. One ball, one strike. But so he said because the bulk of the gear is orange, that is technically in the Mets color scheme. So the rest of it can be whatever he wants. And he went with mint. And it looks good. 1-1. down low two in one and the best part of the conversation is Steve Yelves was there too and he’s asking us if this is Alvie and he said do you remember the gear that I wore at home which is the cream one he was trying to to describe it two-1 pitch check swing but he went around Marty furious at himself two and too. And Steve said, “No, I don’t remember.” To which Alvie said, “That’s right. You were on vacation.” But either way, we are seeing guys start to express themselves more with the colors. One nothing Mets ahead bottom three. Herrera leads off first. 2-1 swing a miss. It’s two and two. But just finishing up that thought on Francisco Alvarez. And Zack Gatlin has some kind of pace to it. He is getting the baseball and just firing, which is why Mark Ventos has asked for time ahead of the O2 pitch, but Gallon’s wasting no time. David Peterson to face 34 and five. Randall Critic, a Yeno Suarez, and Josh Naylor. Dbacks have had just two base runners on a hit by pitch and a walk. First pitch to Critic. Breaking ball bends in outside corner called strike. It’s 0 and one. The bottom of the fourth inning is brought to you by Route 4 Hyundai in Pamis, New Jersey, a one pitch. Swinging a miss counts nothing and two for Peterson. The only base runner so far tonight. He hit Josh Naylor in the second. He walked Jose Herrera, the nineman in the third. He struck out three in the third inning. He came into this start with n 494 career strikeouts. He has four already tonight. 02 fouled back to the netting. Counts no balls in two strikes. So he’s just two away from 500 career caves. We told you about the walk numbers for Peterson as well. came into the start one walk in his last four 02 between a sharp ground ball the third through the legs of Bentos all the way to the corner around first heading for second NMO plays the carum and tosses it in and the Diamondbacks have the leadoff man on on a ball that was absolutely scorched but it went right through the legs of Mark Ventos. It’s 111 off the bat. Bentos looked like pre- pitch he was ready. He was in position, but the way that it went through his legs almost made it feel like was he just not ready? He looked like he leaned left and the ball went inside of his right foot. So instead of an E5, they have given him a hit. I think it could have gone it could have gone E5 there, too. Here’s a Heno Suarez. First pitch is way outside. One ball and no strikes. I guess because it was hit so hard. It’s call that the old hometown call, too. Yeah, that’s for sure. So, that’s the first hit tonight for Arizona. The Dbacks have a runner in scoring position for the first time. One pitch in tight. Two balls, no strikes. Suarez batting a buck 98 coming into tonight’s game. 10 homers, 23 RBI’s. Had a couple last night. 20. Breaking ball waved and missed. It’s two and one. Josh Naylor is on deck, which is a good sign for Diamondbacks fans because that means that the hand that was hit back in the second inning is okay. At this point, you would have expected him to exit the game if there was any kind of concern. Peterson a deep breath and a look at second. The 2-1 tight or is it a foul ball or did it hit him? And now they’re looking into the dugout at the first baseline. I think they’re saying foul ball. But Trip Gibson has both hands up and now he’s explained to the Diamondbacks dugout. I think has his hand up. Are they going to re they’re going to check and see if they saw something? There was a sound. There was definitely a sound. It hit something. The bat, the body. I thought it might have been a hit by pitch. The count on the board says three and one, but Trip Gibson indicated foul ball. I think it’s two and two. It is two and two. He’s holding up the fingers there. Yeah. And again, Lavell didn’t waved off any kind of challenge or anything. So, I guess it did hit the bat. Two and to the count. Rich leads off second base after the double. Two two-2 pitch in the dirt. Kept tight by Alvarez. Three and two. Normally you expect a little bit more of an emphatic call. And I guess in a situation where you’re just blowing the plate, Dan, it doesn’t have to be that enthusiastic. Three and two count. Peterson ready. Payoff pitch inside ball four. Suarez is aboard and the Diamondbacks have the first two men on against David Peterson in the fourth inning. First and second, nobody out. Here’s Josh Naylor. We’re coming to you live from the Big Oot broadcast booth. Big OT, grab a mug and tea proudly. That entire Met Infield is going to come together on the mound. And you mentioned Pat how Peterson’s been able to fill up the strike zone and stay on the attack and, you know, make these guys beat him. But all of a sudden, once that ball goes through Ventos’s legs into the corner for what is called a double, Peterson has to pitch totally different than earlier in the game. Now the tying run is at second base. He’s got to be fine. He’s got to be in a sense perfect because Suarez, as the Mets found out last night, still a very powerful bat that wants to live for moments like that. Well, you put him on after a 3-2 close pitch. tonight. Try to go get the lefty Josh Naylor, maybe find a ground ball double play. So for David Peterson, he has walked two tonight. It’s his first multi-walk game since April 6th against Toronto when he walked five. He had just one walk in his last 21 and 2/3 coming into tonight. First pitch to Josh Naylor. Waved at and missed. Tight breaking ball outside corner. It’s 0 and one. Aaylor was hit by a pitch on a sinker that came charging in back in the second inning. 0 and one the count. Britic off second. Suarez off first. The 01 breaking ball. Ben’s low. Two ball. One ball, one strike. Gordius Guriel Junior’s on deck. One- nothing Mets. Bottom four. Arizona with its first opportunity against Peterson tonight. A thinner with a long look in a letter high set as he checks second. The 1-1 up and in again off the glove of Alvarez. Britick trying for third. He will get there. Suarez stays put over at first and Arizona has runners at first and third with nobody out. Could be a pass ball and Alvarez is slamming his hand into his mitt in frustration. This is the pitch up and in. Hit him right in the glove right the center of the glove and then rattled out. That is a a free and very valuable 90 ft gathered by Randall Griduk there to get to third. So now first and third with nobody out. One- nothing Mets ahead. Bottom four. Mets will play the infield back. They’ll try for two. Aaylor doesn’t run particularly well. Two and one the count. Aaylor grounded into a pair of double plays last night. 2-1. Dwayne a bouncing ball hits towards second. McNeil has a high hop, goes to second for one. Lindor will not return the throw to first. A run comes in to score and we are tied at one in the bottom of the fourth inning. And Arizona has a runner on first with one away. Just frustrating for David Peterson, but now it’s going to kind of flush it here. Defense not been particularly helpful here. That ball through Bentos’s legs, the pass fall from Alvarez to basically hand Gri third base with nobody out and good luck getting out of that unscathed. So now you have man at first, one out back to it trying to get another double play. Here’s Lorie Guriel Jr. first pitch off foul back to the netting. Counts no balls in one strike. That ball just wasn’t quite hit hard enough to double up. Naylor had a range to his left the field. So all square at one bottom four runner at first base with one out. Peterson a look to first the 01. Fouled back to the netting again. No balls in two strikes. Heraldo Purdomo is on deck. Buriel flyed out to Tyrone Taylor back into the second. Oh, and to the count. All Guriel Jr. Peterson shakes off Alvarez once. Now sets off first. 02 Swine drive at the left field line going all the way to the corner. Naylor’s around second. He’s heading for third. NMO slipped on the warning track. Naylor goes to third as the throw comes in. Guriel the second with a stand up double and the Diamondbacks have runners at second and third and Brandon NMO is hobbling in left field. Now you mentioned it something as that ball kicked around in the corner there. It took a weird bounce and so Brandon had to react to that and that reaction caused him to push off of his feet and the first thing you think of is the planter fasciitis. the issue that he had at the end of the year last year where literally in the NLCS Dodger Stadium he is hobbling to get to balls down the line and we’ll see here on a replay he tries to put on the brakes and that left knee you can see it kind of extend and that that’s another issue too. Who knows if it’s the planter fascitis or a knee issue. Just think about planter fasciitis because that’s what’s been ailing him. Yeah, that knee hyperextended as he planted. Yeah, he’s holding that left knee. Brian Paka is out there along with Carlos Mendoza. It’s grabbing his knee and then the back of his his calf. And he was slowing down. He was decelerating as he raced over to the corner and then started to slow down, studying where that ball was going to bounce off the wall. And now NMO is jogging and moving around out there in left field. I’m getting another look at it. It looks like he puts on the brakes and stops with both feet on the turf as he gets to the warning tracks. So, it’s not as if he put his foot from the turf onto the track and that messed up his knee. But what is almost good here is that Carlos Mendoza has handed NMO his glove back. Yeah, he’s trying to stay in this game. Brandon is grabbing the knee and he’s he’s given that kind of affirmative look with his mouth saying, you know, I might be okay here. Man, that was just really, really weird. You can see him trying to explain to Brian Baka exactly what happened. And he’s he’s grabbing that left hamstring area behind the knee. It appears he’s going to try and stay in this game. That’s a scary moment because he planted and you could see the knee hyper extend and then as he went to go pick up the ball, he slipped. The fact that he was able to get the ball in now here. Yeah. Baka and Mendoza coming off the field. I mean, right now the Mets lost Jesse Winker to the IIL. Lost bullpen help these last few days. Can’t lose NMO. Something to monitor though with Brandon because it’s not going to be back to normal right now immediately and so we’ll see how it it continues here. He’s out there and left right now just moving around and you have to imagine if there was any kind of concern at this point. That’s what leaves NMO out there. But now we turn our attention to Aldo Purdomo who bats with runners at second and third and one out. That’s bringing corners in in the middle back. First pitch. Peroma swings and lifts it. Foul but out of play. Off to the right and out of play. Counts nothing and one. Josh Naylor’s the runner over at third base. Guriel’s the runner at second. 1-1 game. Bottom four. Peromo bounced back to the mound to end the second. Adding 293 29 RBI’s. the 01 inside corner called strike with 92 snowballs and two strikes. This is a guy you almost have to strike out and I think Peterson knows that with balls put in play being an issue here for his defense in the inning. Got ahead. Got to put him away and to the count. Runners lead off. Peterson sets 02 pitch a ground ball back towards the middle. Lindor fields, spins, throws to first in time for the out. A run does score. Burielle goes to third, but that was a fine defensive play by Francisco Lindor to keep that ball from going to center field. Arizona takes a 2-1 lead on the play. Balls hit really hard and Lindor has to reach all the way down to his left and then spin and fire. And Pete over at first base a little bit awkward there just trying to receive the throw and keep his foot on the bag because he didn’t quite know exactly where Lindor’s feed was going to be but he got there completed it. Here’s Garrett Hamson with a runner at third. First pitch fouled off up and to our right counts nothing at one. Hamson doesn’t have an RBI this season. He’s batting just 172. went down on strikes back in the third inning. 2-1 Arizona ahead bottom four. Peterson sets and the 01 breaking ball called strike. 0 and two. That was a really good curve ball by David Peterson trying to limit the damage to just two runs. Arizona has two hits in the inning. Both are doubles. Bariela has one of them. He’s over at third. Oh, into the count on Garrett Hson. Peterson sets and the O2 pitch. Swinging a fly ball to left field. Not deep. NMO coming in. He is there. He makes the catch awkwardly, but that is the final out. Arizona strikes for two on a couple of doubles and a few roundouts and takes a 2-1 lead to the fifth inning on Odyssey Mets radio power. Can’t get enough baseball. Save $20 on MLB Network today. Dbacks with a two-1 lead. Keep so Zack Allen faces Francisco Alvarez, Tyrone Taylor. Then the top with Francisco Lindor and Alvarez calls for his time right before the first pitch from Zack Allen here in the fifth inning. That was certainly a long inning behind the plate as well for Alvarez catching Peterson. We shall see what happens with NMO here with that knee that it looked like he tweaked in left field. First pitch from Gallon. Fast ball misses high. Check swing but Alvarez did not go around and it’s a ball and no strikes. Mets have only one hit against Zack Allen, but they did score thanks to a bunch of walks in that third inning. 10. Ricky Ball pulled and grounded foul down third. That’s one ball and one strike. And Gallon in that inning actually was his own worst enemy, but it might have worked to his advantage because he walked Pete Alonzo with the bases loaded and then got Stling Marte to strike out 1-1. Swing and a miss. High heat outside corner and it’s one and two. Well, that’s what makes ace pitchers like Gallon so tough. The one two got him looking outside corner. Same pitch but just a little bit down and Alvarez caught looking is that guys like Gallon when Sherzer was here or Verlander was here. That’d be some walks here or there to set up something for the other team, but you still haven’t earned it yet. You still haven’t gotten that big hit. Gallon’s been the guy that’s given you the free passes. Fits to Taylor. He takes a breaking ball strike and it’s nothing and one here in the fifth inning. Two to one Arizona. Fifth inning is sponsored by Elect 825. Building our future. Next toss bounces to the plate. That’s one ball and one strike. Gallons had 67 pitches. Pat and I were joking that this thing was flying along so well over the first few. Guys were swinging early and often. Both pitchers in the 60s here as we start the fifth ahead of schedule 1-1 breaking ball strike and it’s one and two. Taylor reached on the fielders’s choice in the third inning. Call was an out at first overturned. That was big call. One, two, got him. Swinging knuckle curve in. So here’s Zack Gallon working downhill. He’s retired six straight. Here’s the 01. Skyed in the air left field side slicing away from Clay. It’ll make the seats and it’s 0 and two. Here is the next pitch. and it’s chopped weakly to first base. Naylor has got it and takes it himself. Inning over. Easy and breezy for Zack Gallon. Mets go down one, two, three. Diamondbacks two. Everything looks good right now for the Yankees. First take from Brandon Nemo does come back out to play left field after tweaking his knee in that fourth inning. And that was not a very fast inning, I should say, not a very long guardian slip there. It was very fascinating for Zack Allen, but it did not give the Mets sprinting staff that much time to inspect that knee, that left knee that Nemo seemed to hyper extend, if you will, where he was slowing down toward the corner in left field, chasing after a double and was hobbling around, but he’s back out there, which is at least a good sign. So, David Peterson back at it trying to avoid what was kind of a a wonky and quirky fourth inning. Ball that got through Vietento’s leg. Fast ball from Alvarez. And then two runs for the Diamondbacks. It’s Herrera, the catcher. And then the top of the order, Jos Herrera, who is one of the two that has walked tonight, batting right-handed. First pitch, Peterson misses high with a sinker. That’s one ball and no strikes. Infield back outfield is deep. The wind up and the one to Herrera. That’s cracked in the sky toward left. NMO cutting to his left. Can’t get to it. It drops in for a hit. Rolls by him and goes to the wall and Herrera’s at second with a double. Well, NMO did not look that athletic on that move toward the alley and left. And as that ball took a sharp angle by him, his ability to cut back toward the wall looked a little bit in question. Not knocking NMO, just knowing his athletic ability seemed like he’s maybe not trusting pushing off that knee enough. The runner at second. Here’s Catel Marte. Another double for the Diamondbacks. Arizona with a two to one lead. The lefty to the righty. Arte chops one foul at the first baseline and it’s nothing and one. Now for the Mets, they do have JosΓ© Aokar if they need to reach into their their bench for an outfielder. Brett Batty is also here so you can get him into the game. Move McNeel to left or Aunia that could work too if you need to take Nemo out. 01. Marte grounds it again. Foul third base side and it’s nothing and two out for Peterson. weird, but not maybe as weird as the game that he had. One of the worst games he ever pitched in this building, which was a weird one way back 2021. Maybe not way back, but back in 2021, it feels way back. 0 and two on Marte. Look at second. And now the pitch. Got him looking outside corner. He needed that strike out. And Marte is the fifth to strike out against Peterson. So one more and that means 500 for David Peterson. But David in 2021 is Corbin Carroll steps in was pitching against Madison Bumgardner when Bumgardner was here with Arizona. The Mets scored four against Bumgardner in the top of the first and Peterson gave up five in the bottom of the first inning. Here’s a pitch of Carol takes a strike outside corner. It’s nothing and one. He actually did not survive that bottom of the first. Lasted just one out. Gave up the five runs and the kicker is that the Mets won the darn thing. Seven to six. Bob Murphy would say all one in the dirt. Great stop by Alvarez. And it’s one ball and one strike. And that was when Madison Bumgardner was here in Arizona. Did not go well. I think it’s one they’d like to forget. He’s such a weird case because he was so good. Is he a Hall of Famer because of those playoff runs is the question. The 1-1 Harold takes low and in and it’s two balls and a strike. When he pitched with the Giants, Bumgardner, threetime World Series champ, World Series MVP. Great postseason numbers. 11 seasons there. Erra was three here with Arizona. ZRA was almost five and a half the end of his career. 2-1. Carol cannot hold up on the check swing. The slider gets him and it’s two and two. Great bull rider. Was he? That’s what they say. You know that story, right? I don’t. That he was in the rodeo under a assumed name because he didn’t want anybody to know it was him. Yeah. They probably wouldn’t have signed off on that on the contract. Runner at second. Two and two on Carol. The pitch. Chopper hit off the mound. First base side. Peterson can’t get to it. McNeel gloves it. No play at first. Carol beats it out and Herrera gets to third. No man’s land. Ground ball infield hit with a speedy lefty. Corbin Carroll. And they’re at the corners with one out. Peterson very athletic was falling to the third base side so had to quickly turn it up and go the other way to get that ground ball. He swiped at it with the glove. Couldn’t get it. And McNeel coming in from second base. He got to it, but the time he picked the ball up and went to throw to first. Harold was already halfway past first base down the line. So at the corners, one out. Two to1 Arizona bottom fifth. And here’s Grick whose double got the rally started in the fourth. The first pitch fouled back to the screen. It’s nothing and one. Roof is open tonight at Chase Field. A nice cool night. Not just the roof, but those little open windows out in center field, right field, left field. The 01. Frederick slams it. Foul off to the right. And it’s 0 and two. 75 degree night. Nice and cool. Lights are on. Dark night sky up overhead. Of course, if you’re listening to us in New York, it’s nothing but dark sky overhead. But it just pass 8:00 out here in Phoenix. Two to one Diamondbacks. They have runners at the corners with one out. 02 pitch outside. Miss with a curve and it’s a ball and two strikes. David Peterson is one strikeout away from 500 for his career. Sixth major league season, his 92nd start. First and third, a lefty set. The one-two popped up left side of the infield. Foul ground. Ventos over in foul territory. Makes the catch right in front of the Arizona dugout. And there’s two away. So Gridic one for three. He’s kind of that lefty masher. Now he doubled in that fourth inning, but here he pops out and he’ll bring up AU Hennio Suarez. Got him on an 86 mph change up sponsored by Spectrum. A fast and reliable connection making more things possible. Spectrum. Now here is the Uber Dangerous Auoso Suarez posed by Gino. But the Tigers minor leaguers called him because quite frankly they said we can’t pronounce Auhead. Going to call you Gino. That was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away for Suarez. Batting right-handed first and third for the Diamondbacks. Two outs. Two to1 Arizona in the fifth. Peterson’s pitch rip foul down third and it’s nothing and one. This is Odyssey Mets radio on WHSQ and WCBS FMD2 New York. First pitch to Wan Sodto. He runs up to show bot, pulls back and takes a strike from Zack Allen to start the top of the sixth alongside Patrick McCarthy. My name is Keith Rad. Arizona has a two to one lead. Zack Allen pitching like an ace. There’s the wind up in the 01. Stoops one foul. Little dribble up the first baseline and it’s nothing and two. Sodto, Alonso, Marte go two, three, and four. That is the meat of the order. Presented by the Chef IQ Sense, a cooking thermometer that pairs with your phone and ensures you never overcook or undercook your chicken, fish, or meat again. Buy one at chefiq.com. 02 missed outside with a 94 mph fastball. That’s one ball and two strikes. Sodto has walked in two trips. Mets only have one hit against Gallon. One, two. Just missed outside. Here held the glove. Gallon held the pose and Trip Gibson held them all in suspense saying what? It was outside. Oh, two and two on Sodto. And the next drilled in the air left field toward the line toward the corner but slices away from play. I think it landed into the bullpin. Sure did. Which is half in fair territory, half in foul territory, but it was a foul ball. That’s still two and two on Sodto. Pitch popped up left side of the infield fading towards shallow left. Purdomo out. So Suarez the third baseman. And Suarez makes the catch retiring Sodto for the first out. Mentioned some scores from before. Atlanta also beat Cincinnati in 10. Chris S struck out 10. The 89th doubledigit strikeout game and the eighth most in major league history. Wow, pretty good. Two to1 Diamondbacks pitched to Alonzo. Raiki balls in for a strike. Couldn’t hold a check swing anyway and it’s nothing and one. Minnesota beat Baltimore nine to one. More good pitching. 01 missed outside. One and one. Pablo Lopez for Minnesota 11. Well, Gallon’s been pretty good tonight, too. Here’s the 1-1. Alonzo chops it fouled down third. One ball and two strikes. Nash, I hate to put you on the spot, but I wonder where Randy Johnson might have been on that list of double-digit strikeouts because with the roof open tonight at Chase Field. Well, there was a night in Mets history in 2004 where Casmatsui met Randy Johnson met open roof and a very angry Randy Johnson. The one-two missed inside two balls and two strikes. The roof is barely open here, right? It’s It’s pretty uncommon. Well, the one night it was, Randy Johnson was pitching and he gave up a home run to Casmatsu. Casmatsui of all people. Here’s the 2-2 swing and a miss. Knuckle curve brings Alonzo down to a knee. Nine in a row retired by Gallon. Two outs in the sixth. Well, as the story goes from that 2004 night in May. Randy Johnson got back to the dugout. Was u not happy with the fact that the roof was open and the roof was closed the middle of the game. Pitch to Marte. He swings it. Ground ball to third right at Suarez. Sansson slings across in time to end the inning. Well, they closed the roof that night and what happened? The Mets won the game one to nothing. Here it is. Two to one Arizona going into the bottom of the sixth. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or man said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. As we move to the bottom of the sixth, David Peterson still chugging away. 76 pitches, faces lefty Josh Naylor. First toss, Naylor swings at it and grounds it foul to the right for strike one. Well, again, these boys have been playing like we got somewhere to be. And the pace of the game is brought to you by Optimum Fiber. Don’t take slow for an answer. And believe me, they haven’t. Naylor Guriel Purdomo 56 and seven all middle of the third time through. And I think the only reason there’s a little pause in the action is because the ball girl just get to her seat down that right field line. Now the 01 breaking ball misses low and it’s one ball and one strike. So I was telling you about that Randy Johnson Casmatsui story. Randy Johnson actually second all time in doubledigit strikeout performances. Here’s the 1-1 down and away and it’s two balls at one strike. We’re saying this because Chris Sail threw his 89th, which is good for eighth all time. Randy Johnson did it 212 times. That’s amazing. Two-1 to Naylor missed outside. Three balls in a strike. The only one that did it more than that 215 times was a guy by the name of Nolan Ryan. He was pretty good. Former Mint Nolan Ryan. 3-1 to Naylor. Powled off of his foot. He goes crumbling down to the ground. Man that’s already been expected for taking a pitch off of his hand tonight. Is now on his hands and knees pushing his way off that that knee off the bat and back onto his feet. Match printed me out this trusty list. And of the top 30 names, Nolan Ryan on down, nine of the 30 have been Mets at one time or another. That goes to show you that even in the abbreviated history of the Mets going back to 1962, pitching has always been the name of the game for the Mets. Owen Ryan’s on this list. Sherzer, Pedro, Verlander, of course, Tom Siver, Johan, Dwight Gooden peppering this list. Gus Naylor is going to take his time here. And now he hobbles his way as if he stubbed his toe back into that lefty batter’s box. Three and two. The wind up and the payoff is low. A walk for Peterson who was issued now three walks tonight. It’s a leadoff walk to Naylor in this tight two to one game. Peterson’s at 82 pitches. So the bullpen not up yet. Carlos Mendoza has a lot of trust in David Peterson, especially with with traffic. He, among others, is one of those guys that don’t mind pushing into the fire because he’s a ground ball pitcher. Always get one ground ball double play to make an inning change. But here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. batting right-handed. Diamondbacks two runs on four hits. The Mets just one run on one hit. stands tall in Lynfield back looking for that double play. First pitch cracked in the air to left field and deep. Nemo takes a turn, looks and it’s gone into the second row. David Peterson gives up his first home run and a dog’s age. It’s a big two-run home run for Lordis Guriel Jr. And in the bottom of the sixth, Arizona takes a four to one lead. First home runs allowed by Peterson since March 31st comes right after a leadoff walk. And that won’t hurt. It certainly did because the Mets have had a ton of trouble against Zack Gallon tonight. You felt like they were within striking distance in a one-run game, but unfortunately that ball was middle and Gurio absolutely smoked it. Now Purdomo batting right. Corners are in. pitch. Ricky ball is low and it’s a ball and no strikes to left center. It is only 364 to 374 ft. That one went 383. So just got into that second or third row. The 10 down and in. Peterson misses and it’s ball two. Well, you know, it’s always a possibility to give up a home run. And it’s just something that with this current Nets pitching staff, starter and reliever, it’s it’s hard to think about that cuz they just haven’t given him up. 20. There’s a strike on the inside corner and it’s two and one. Purdomo did not like that. Scurryy’s back to tell Trip Gibson this much behind home plate. But the Mets coming into this series, the starters have allowed the fewest home runs per nine and the relievers the fifth fewest home runs per nine. So, sure a home run, but these kind of gamechanging backb breaking home runs, we haven’t seen a lot of those. 2-1. This is low and away. A change up. Three balls and a strike. Middle game of this three-game series that will wrap up tomorrow afternoon. It’s 12:40 local time here in Arizona. So, 3:40. Little rush hour game for you tomorrow afternoon. kick in the 3-1 strike outside corner and Purdomo who had thrown his bat back toward the dugout has to go sheepishly over to pick it up. Now he’s back in. Hamson’s on deck. Three and two to Purdomo with nobody out. Pitch rounded foul down third right past the new third base coach Shawn Larkin and it stays full. Peterson had 89 pitches and now that bullpen has started to get up. I believe that’s Jose BH who is out there throwing in the Mets pen. Peterson peaks over that black glove. Feet pointed toward the first base dugout. Deep breath wind up payoff. Breaking ball outside just missed. And another walk for Peterson. Something that he’s also not been doing a lot this year. He has in the past his career. There is no doubt about that. But as Pat highlighted beautifully, it’s just not been part of his his game this year. It’s had the lowest walk rate of his career. 6 and 12% of his career. It’s double digits. A lot of walks tonight. Here’s Hamson batting right. First pitch. He shows bunt. Pulls back. Takes a heater over the outside corner for a strike. Two more runs here in the sixth inning for Arizona. They have a four to one lead over the Mets. Hamson has struck out and blown out to left. He’s 0 for two. Right-handed hitter. Ventosen at third. The pitch shows Bun again. Pushes it up the first baseline. Peterson has it on the backhand. Flips over to Alonzo covering for the out. And Bernomo’s up to second base on the sacrifice that goes 13. That’s a really impressive play by David Peterson. Left-handers traditionally fall to the third base side of the mound. So, the fact that he was able to hop off the mound and race to the first base side, that wasn’t a bad bunt by Hson. It’s a terrific sacrifice, but he put it in a spot that he could potentially get on as well. Now, a big runner at second base, one out. And here’s Herrera batting right. First pitch from Peterson. Swinging a miss. Change up and it’s nothing and one. Well, you’re right, Pim. This is a two-fold issue here. Arizona’s getting some hits thanks to a lot of walks. And Gallon is being galloned on the other side against Mets hitters. Peterson has walked four tonight. It’s a season high. Here’s the 01. That’s low. And it’s one ball and one strike. Actually, he walked five against Toronto on April the 6. So it was that outing that really woke him up. He had only walked one over the last four coming into tonight and he’s walked four tonight. Cordomo at second. The 1-1 fouled off into the catcher mid of Alvarez and it’s one and two. Top of the order is up next. That’s Marte. Probably would be the end of the line for Peterson. They really want to push him for a fourth time through. Four to one Diamondbacks in the sixth. One out, runner at second. One, two, Sky foul to the right and out of play. Herrerero late add Gabby Moreno came out of the game, came out of the starting lineup, I should say, probably about an hour and a half before game time. It was announced as a manager’s decision. Yes. One, two, swing and a miss. Herrera down on strikes. David Peterson has just struck out his 500th batter. Sure, he is pleased with that, but also not happy with how the night has gone. You know, it’s interesting about the Gabrielle Moreno, I guess, classification. Isn’t everything a coach’s decision? That’s what I’m saying. Here’s Marte. They will let Peterson face Marte here. Pitch chopped foul up the third baseline and it’s nothing and one. That’s what I was kind of saying. Manager’s decision, right? It’s like an upper body or a lower body injury. In hockey, yeah, that’s according to the players union. In hockey, that’s all they’re allowed to do is tell you they’re hurt. Yes. Where? Upper or lower? 0 and one on Marte. Runner at second. Two outs. Four to one. Diamondbacks pitch that miss is low with a change up and it’s one ball and one strike. So when you’re talking about lefties and 500 strikeouts in Mets history, it’s pretty big deal and it’s certainly a big deal for David Peterson who is on that list now. But he’s on that list as a homegrown Met. The 1-1 takes outside and it’s one and two. Jerry Kuzzman is the pitcher on that list of lefties. 500 club 1799 strikeouts with the Mets. Also a homegrown Met to do it. He’s basically the guy. Stephen Matz is on that list. More than 500. John Nice. Tug McGraw. John Matlac. One, two, missed up high. Marte lays off and it’s two and two. And now you can put David Peterson on that list. Peterson’s 500 strikeouts. Next up, Jesse Arasco 56. And then Tom Glavin 516. Trying to get out of this sixth inning. 2-2. Marte bangs it foul on the ground down third to stay alive. Funny about Tom Glavin, too. That game that we mentioned, Casmat Suie hit that first inning home run. Randy Johnson kicking and screaming had them close the roof. Mets won the game one nothing. Tom Glavin was great that night for the Mets. Kept the Diamondbacks off the board. Domo at second. The 22 fades down and in a change up and the count full. Glavin that night went seven and two/3 and Braden Looper about the save. Remember him? Close the door. Sure do. Payoff pitch. Marte skies the ball to right center. Pushing toward right. Sodto calling off Taylor. Makes the one-hand catch. Side retired. Mets came into the game down into the inning down two to one. Lordis Guriel Junior’s home run. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an oppo taco. His 13th. Then it’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. That was a single by Alvarez in the third. First pitch to Brandon NMO is in for a strike. It is 0 and one. We’re coming to you live from the Bigalow T broadcast booth. Bigot T. Grab a mug and tea proudly. 4-1 Dbacks ahead. The 01 to NMO. Ball outside corner. A very generous call from Trip Gibson. And the count is nothing and two. But Zack Allen has been spectacular so far. Six innings of one- run ball against the Mets back on May 1st. Tonight, six innings of one run ball. He’s allowed just one hit. He’s walked three. It was three consecutive batters back in the third. The O2 to NMO in the dirt off of Herrera and towards the third base dugouts. One ball and two strikes. But outside of that, he’s been spectacular. Demo’s 0 for two tonight. He’s fly out twice. One, two. Breaking ball down and in. Two balls, two strikes. Demo was banged up earlier on a double by Lord Scuriel back in the fourth inning, but he’s fought through it. Stay in the game. 2-2. Fought off foul back in the netting. Do it again. Two balls and two strikes. But Zack Gowen had really struggled going into that last start against the Mets. An RA over five. Two-2 Fallon over our heads to the left. Two balls, two strikes. Came in tonight’s game with an RA of 4.93. Now dipped to 4.47. Two-2 hit foul again. Almost the exact same spot up into the third deck. We’ll keep it rolling. Two balls and two strikes on Brandon Na. Gallon ready. Two-2 again. Swung on. Hit in the air. Shallow center. Fredomo goes out. Shortstop calls everybody off, but he is called off at the last second by Hamson. Center fielder makes the catch for out number one. And Gallon continues to roll since that walk to Pete Alonzo back in the third inning. Here’s Mark Ventos 0 for two. Lined out, struck out. First pitch, a foul back and out of play to the right into the third deck. Now it’s snowballs in one strike. That was the last base runner that Gallon allowed. 11 in a row set down by the right hand. The 01 check swing and line drive foul. It hit Jeff McNeel in the on deck circle. What is going on tonight? Jeff appears to be okay, but Jeff was situated just to the left of the circle. Nobody seems to be overly concerned. Jeff’s okay. 02 swung on hit to the gap in right center field. that is slicing down a base hit. Amson cuts it off, spins, tosses it in. Bento stops at first. Second hit of the game for the Mets and the Mets have a runner at first base with one away against Gallon here in the seventh. Down 4-1. Well, finally for the Mets, they get something. Mention Galla retired 11 straight. At least knock him off Kilter a little bit because not only is he pitching well, but he’s using that pitch clock to his advantage, the pace. None of these Mets hitters can get particularly comfortable. And Gallon’s also throwing strike one. A lot of things working for him. Here’s Jeff McNeel. First pitch is high and wide. One ball, no strikes. McNeel is lined out to second twice. Neither have been hit very hard. As McNeil asks for time, he’s got to be saying to Trip Gibson that Gallon’s just dictating this pace too quickly. Well, that’s why you see their their heads are down when they get in the box because until you look at the pitcher, he can’t start, but he’s ready to start like you’re saying. Wano outside, two balls, no strikes. Gallon’s approaching 100 pitches. So, the bullpin is up for Arizona with one out in the seventh inning. DACs ahead 4-1. This will be pitch 99. Theos leads off first. Two pitch. So, we had a sharp ground ball foul pass the back of Antoine Richardson in the first base coaching box. Two balls and one strike. Jeff’s average of 226, a home run and four RBI’s. Kevin Ginkle is the one warming up for the Diamondback. 2-1. Breaking ball misses high. Three balls, one strike. Francisco Alvarez is on deck. He has the only other hit of the night for the Mets. Trailing Arizona 4-1 top seven. Bentos leads off first. All 3-1. A bouncing ball hits worth second. Barte has it. Shovels to Purdomo at second for one. Return to first is in time. Double play. 463 goes the two ball. Zack Gallon. Seven innings of one-run ball. Arizona with a 41 lead. Budo, the 27year-old right-hander out of Venezuela. 2 and0 with a 3.32 RA. This 13th appearance. One pitch. Harold swings and fouls it off. Out of play into the third deck. counts one and one. As we’ve said, roof is open here at Chase Field. First time I’ve ever been here that the roof is open. 1-1 misses wide. Two balls, one strike. When you come into the clubhouse, they have a video board that says conditions, batting practice, roof closed, game time, roof open. We were all shocked. That’s because we didn’t call the hotline. 2-1 low. Three balls, one strike. The Diamondbacks have a hotline set up that you can call to find out the conditions at Chase Field, whether the roof will be open or closed that night. 3-1 pitch just off the plate away. Ball four. So, Carol Walk’s leadoff man is on and Randall Gritic is next. Be one of the first 15,000 fans at the May 10th Mets Cubs game and get an Edund Diaz bobblehead courtesy of Mumu’s Mets.com/promotions for tickets and details. So Keith, naturally I was curious because around 5:30 tonight we were here getting set for the pregame show and well the roof was still closed. Here’s Pav Smith. He bats for Randic takes the first pitch low. It’s one ball in strikes. So, I called the hotline and the hotline says to me, “Hotline doesn’t work anymore. Check the website.” Oh, come on. It’s very disappointing. One out. Smith swings and drives one to dead center field. Temp racing back to the warning track. Couple of steps in front of the wall. Makes the catch. Carol retreats and goes back to first. Pave Smith just missed that one. And there’s one away as a Heno Suarez comes to the plate. I can just see it now. Big business. Co happens. They’re cutting slashing positions left and right. That hotline attendant would might have been the first to go. Basically, they say, “Hey, thanks for calling. This doesn’t operate anymore. Check the website. It’s it’s updated 24 hours before every game.” Here’s a Heno Suarez. First pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. So, I went to the website dbax.com/roof. Saw that it was closed last night, which we knew. Open tonight, closed tomorrow. It is closed tomorrow. That’s what it says. Budo sets at one. Suarez swings and lines one back up the middle down. A base hit into center field and it’s bobbled by Taylor and he kicks it into left center. Carol read it beautifully. He’s on his way to third. Suarez took a big turn at first, but he stops there. D-Max have first and third with one away. That’ll likely be a single and an E8. It is and a very very rare one for Tyrone Taylor. This took a a short hop and he tried to field it with two hands in front of his belt in front of his knees actually and it just ate him up. I think it was hit harder and sharper than he thought. It’s not been a great defensive night for the Mets. the ball between Bentos’s legs. Pass ball in a big spot from Alvarez. And then another just kind of a head scratcher from Taylor. You never see that. Here’s Josh Naylor. First pitch misses low. One ball and no strikes. That’s just the first error charge to Tyrone Taylor this season. And a big spot here. First and third. 4-1 bottom seven. 10 pitch. Taylor takes low. Smothered by Alvarez in the dirt. Two balls. No strikes. I remember last year, Taylor, his first year with the Mets. One of the things I read about him is that six years in Milwaukee, he made a had made a single error in his career. And he made one, I think, in April of last year, so got it out of the way early. And then that said his worst of the year. I don’t I don’t doubt it. Do the count pitch at foul and out of play. Just two hour left off signage above the production booth. Counts two and one. and Tyrone Taylor who is known for his defense. That’s fallen guard. First and third, one out. 4-1 Arizona 2-1 outside. Three balls, one strike. Lord Scuriel, who has a home run, is on deck. Josh Naylor big- time power. It’s off to a great start to his Dback’s career, hitting 308 left-handed hitter points the bat towards right center field. Now steps out. Carol the runner over at third. Suarez the runner over at first. Carol with great speed. Suarez not so much. That’s a look for two. 3-1 swinging a fly ball hit the opposite way to left. Nibbo over to his right. He is there. Now comes in, makes the catch. Harold tags. He will score. Throw goes into second base. It is a sacrifice fly for Josh Naylor and a 5-1 Arizona lead. Kind of medium to deeper depth fly ball there for Brandon Emmo to handle and doesn’t have the greatest arm in the world. It’s really hard to throw out. Corbin Carroll sprinting home on that sacrifice fly. And so Nella just simply gets the job done to the right side of the field. Here’s Lord Scuriel Jr. with two outs and a runner at first. As it stands, that run is unearned. Charge to Jos Bhau because of the error to Tyrone Taylor. Of course, that can change with Guriel up at the plate. First pitch fouled off. Nothing at one. And the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of the New York Mets. Well, Keith, they’ll be happy to see that Zack Gallow’s out of the game. But now they got to deal with Kevin Gingle. Gingle facing Alvarez right to righty for his pitch. Chopper hit left side of the infield. The short stop Pommo charges bare hands, throws to first, but it’s late. Alvarez beats it out. an infield single on the very first pitch offered by Kevin Ginkle. So, a little something here for the Mets. They have a leadoff man on. It was hard enough to get anybody on against Zack Allen if he didn’t put him on for free himself. And so, Alvarez is on base against Ginkle. By the way, though, he did not hit. Alec Thomas, who was in the onex ready to pinch hit for Garrett Hamson, is now in center field for Garrett Hamson. Then here’s Taylor first pitch breaking balls in for a strike and it’s nothing and one. Well, you can hear some of the booze. That’s because a lot of the 24,353 here tonight are Mets fans just like they were last night when the Mets held on to a 54 win. 01 breaking ball off the plate. That’s one and one to the righty. Now Ginkle here is probably the guy closing games these days. Justin Martinez is hurt. AJ Puck is hurt. That’s not the first time we’ve seen Lavell go to Ginkle early. 1-1 swing and a miss and it’s one and two. Early in a sense that it’s not the ninth inning for the save. It’s not a save situation anyway, but the big hitters are due up to have Taylor, then Lindor, then Sodto. So you want your best in there to face him. One, two, missed away. Two balls and two strikes. Ginkle has been pretty good. He’s been in that bullpen for a very long time. Very trusty for Tory Lavell. Big part of that 2023 team that won the National League pennant. 2-2 chopper hit foul behind home plate. It stays two balls and two strikes. And quite frankly, I think I like to say Ginkle. Sounds like a a list of the names that, you know, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David might have been thinking, what do we go with here? Do we go with hello Ginkle or do we go with hello Newman? Ginkle’s got kind of that Seinfeldian feel to it. Runner at first, nobody out. Two-2 just missed high and it’s three balls and two strikes. Don’t forget to stay tuned after the game. We can stay up that late for the Verizon Men’s postgame show with Pat McCarthy who will be staying up late. For the latest deals, drop into your local Verizon store. Payoff swing and a miss. Chase the slider and down goes Taylor for the first out in the eighth. But Tyrone officially 0 for three. And here’s Francisco Lindor switch hitter batting left. So Ginkle’s in there after Zack Gallon went seven innings of one-run ball, struck out six, walked three, gave up just two hits. Lindor batting left. First pitch. Ginkle delivers a strike on the inside corner and it’s nothing and one. Now Gallon just last start at City Field against the Mets gave up one run over six and just two hits. So you put it all together, he was pretty dominant both times. The 01 fast misses up and away and it’s one ball and one strike on Lindor who was one of the three that walked in the third inning. Nets had bases loaded. Alonzo Walk brought in the only man threat of the night. They’re down five to one in the eighth. 1-1. This is upstairs. Two balls and one strike. Corners are in. Middle infielders are back. Outfield playing Lindor to go the other way. Even though last night as a lefty he put one in the pool in right center field. Genkles 2-1. Pulled deep but foul off to the right toward that second deck down the first base side. Two balls and two strikes. That’ll show you to play me to go the other way. Sodto is on deck. Mets looking for something they can build on here with Alvarez at first base. Held on by Naylor. Very small lead. Two-2 bouncing ball to second base. Marte has it, runs and tags Alvarez and throws to first. Double play. Not what the Mets wanted to do there. And partake starts the double play tagging Alvarez. And we go to the bottom of the eighth inning out here at Chase Field in the desert in Phoenix where the Diamondbacks have a 5 to1 lead. First at bat of the night for Alec Thomas. Came off the bench to play center field in the top of this inning facing Jos Budo. Right. He whines and deals. First pitch pumped in there for a strike. It’s nothing and one. Well, no doubt Arizona’s offense has been, you know, good enough tonight. Five runs on seven hits, but Zack Allen really was the story. 01 miss one ball and one strike interrupting the flow that has been the Mets offense run differential of better than 57 runs. Mets offense slowed down tonight. Here’s the 1-1. Thomas drives the ball left center field. Taylor though trots over toward left center, makes the catch. One away. Here’s Jose Herrera batting left. First pitch misses low and it’s a ball of no strikes. Five to one Arizona. Middle game of three. Infield back around to the right. Pluto hugs that right beige glove. The wind up and the pitch rolled over foul to the right. One ball and one strike. The injury update brought to you by the Rothenberg Law Firm. That’s really good news and coming back from a lat injury. Sustained that very early in spring training. The 1-1 missed outside of fast ball. Two balls in a strike. Thought to Carlos Mendoza today and just said, you know, hey, what’s up with Jos Siri? And he said he’s running, which is great. and that fractured leg that he uh sustained in Sacramento against the A’s. Here’s the 2-1 line toward the left side. A base hit floating right over Vientos’s head along the line. NMO runs over to pick it up and funnel it back in. And so Jos Herrera has a single. They talk about manager decision to get Gabby Moreno out of the starting lineup for Herrera. What has Herrera done in the ninth spot? Walk, double, single. Well, he’s been on three out of four times. Five to one Arizona. They’ll send Catel Marte up fifth time through the lineup. Switch hitter batting left. One on and one out. Budo just trying to clean up the eighth inning here. Mitch missed outside with ball one. Well, here’s an update. Not an injury update, but a a Mets beat update. News Day zone. Tim Healey probably been reading Tim’s great work for years and years. He’s moving on. 10 swing and a miss and a breaking ball. That’s one ball and one strike. Tim has just taken a job with the Boston Globe. He announced that on Twitter, I think just yesterday. And so that’s a big hit to the Mets B. Tim is terrific. Always has been. The 1-1 missed outside. two balls in one strike. You know, Tim is one of the most dedicated writers. He’s always the perfect writer that kind of hides his way into the clubhouse and next thing you know, the next day there’s a great story you get to read in the morning. Get yourself ready. There’s the 2-1 missed outside. Three balls in a strike. And you know, we in spring training, we go down, we do 10 broadcasts. Tim is there first day of pitches and catchers and he does not leave. does not leave until the Mets break camp. Ain’t that crazy? That’s how dedicated Tim is. And so he’ll be covering the Boston Red Sox up in Boston. 3-1. Arte big rip. Fouls it into the mitt and it’s three and two. Yeah. And excited for Tim because he gets a chance to go home and he he gets to write for the Boston Globe which is just a tremendous paper and you can sense the excite in in Tim. And I said to him, I was like, “Does this mean you’re going to get to run the Boston Marathon?” Cuz Tim’s an avid runner. He’s run the New York Marathon before. And he goes, “It did cross my mind.” So, we’re wishing Tim nothing but the best, but we’re going to miss him dearly. And News Day’s got some good riders, but Tim’s been one of the best. Runner at first, one out. 3-2. Mart’s ground ball toward first. A fair ball. Lonzo picks it up, steps on first, throws to second. Tag applied on the runner by Lindor. They get Herrera and they get the the 36 double play. Alonzo steps on the bag. Lindor puts the tag on and Voodoo is out of the eighth. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. This is Odyssey Mets radio on WHSQ and WCBS FM HD2 New York at Chase Field in Phoenix alongside Pat McCarthy. My name is Keith Rad. Last chance for the Mancier. Top of the ninth chasing four five to one Diamondbacks lead. The new pitcher on for Tory Lavell is Freddy Shelby Miller who has been all over this league. has pitched 14 times in relief here to a 1.23 erra facing Juan Sodto. First pitch takes outside with ball one. Kevin Gle through the eighth inning. Got Alvarez, Taylor, and Lindor. Big help to a double play in there as well. So it’s Sodto, Alonzo, and Marte in the ninth. The 10 down and in. And it’s two balls and no strikes. Again, if this holds and the Diamondbacks win, that means they will have won four, excuse me, three out of the first five games with the finale coming tomorrow in the season series. 20. That’s low. Three balls and no strikes. They took two out of three at City Field. And so if the Mets lose tonight, they kind of have to win tomorrow to eliminate the head-to-head tiebreaker that the Diamondbacks would have. Here’s a 3-0. That’s a strike on the outside corner. Three and one because, you know, at the end of the year, whether it’s wildcard spots, tiebreers are going to be big. They always are. And you can ask the Diamondbacks all about that who missed the playoffs last year because of it. 3-1 to Sodto way inside. It’s a leadoff walk and the second time that Sodto has walked. So he was tied for second in baseball with 27 walks coming in. Marcelo Zunes actually led baseball with 30 walks this year. So now with 29 of them at least begins the ninth with a base runner and it puts somebody on for Pete Alonzo here. Nobody out. 51 Diamondbacks. Miller sent first base side pitch hits the outside corner with a slider and it’s nothing and one. Now if the season series ends tied Mets do lose this game but win tomorrow. So both won two out of three in their respective series on the road. Here’s the 01 misses low. One ball and one strike. Again, this will be tough for later on in the year. But the next tiebreaker is intraivisional record. how the Mets did in the NL East and how the Diamondbacks did in the NL West. So, even if you’re not in the same division, it will matter how you did in your division, which kind of puts the onus back on you. The 1-1 fouled away to the right side, and it’s one ball and two strikes. So, you’d almost rather that fate than simply handing the tiebreaker to the Diamondbacks. You say, “Let’s let’s even it up here.” And if it’s you and us at the end, tied. How did we do against the Phillies, the Braves, the Nats, and the Marlins, you again can kind of control your own destiny that way. The one-two up and in. Allonzo bends out of the way. That’s two balls and two strikes. But it is late. It’s after midnight on May the 6th. And you’re think sitting there going, “Oh, come on, Rad. You’re making me think about tiebreers now. It’s May 6th. I’m tired.” Well, I’m telling you. 2-2 swing and a miss splitter puts Alonzo away. One out in the ninth. It’ll bring up the Mets cleanup hitter, Stling Marte. And the cleanup hitter is brought to you by Rotorooer. Plumbing and water cleanup. Rotorooer, that’s the name. And away go troubles down the drain. I’m going to need a flush sound effect in there next time, match, please. I’m in. First pitch to Marte. in for a strike. Nothing and one. Diamondbacks ahead five to one. We’re in the ninth. Sodto does at first base. Marte at the plate. 0 for three. Vince only have three hits all night. The 01 from Shelby Miller. Drake slowing away. That’s one ball and one strike. Don’t forget to stay tuned after the game. Horizon Mets postgame show. For the latest deals, drop into your local Verizon store. You are not going to want to miss it. The 1-1 fades outside a slider and it’s two balls and a strike on Marte with NMO to follow unfiltered. Here we go again. So the 2-1 punched in the air to shallow right is going to dunk in for a base hit for Marte. Sodto read it well. is going first to third as Carol collects and fires in. So something breaks the Mets way here. It’s Marte’s bat, but it’s a bloop single and they’re at the corners now with one out for Brandon NMO, which means the tying run moves into the on deck circle. And suddenly the Mets have put themselves in at least a position to strike here. NMO for three. Also that postgame show. Interested to see what Carlos says about NMO’s knee. First pitch. Brandon, it’s a soft ground ball up the first baseline. Naylor letting it roll. Picks it up. Foul. It was rolling fair. It went about 80 ft then turned foul. They would have brought in a run cuz Sodto was about to score. But kind of interested why Naylor just didn’t take it out right there. That to me that’s a no-brainer. I don’t know why you wouldn’t take it out in that situation. That run means nothing to you. Now you give Brandon NMO an opportunity to either drive one, earn a walk. That’s really headscratching. Now remember, it was Naylor last night who on that Aeno Suarez ball to center field just ran the bases poorly. Did not have put himself in a good spot. Poor Lavella was not happy after the game. Anyway, first and third, the 01. Marte breaks and the pitch is popped up. Foul behind home plate. That’ll make seats. And so Marte, who took off for second, has to go back to first. Yeah, just thinking about it, you you keep the tying run the on deck circle by doing that. Yeah. I mean, just you got to pick that ball up and get the out. 02 down and away. And it’s one ball and two strikes. Maybe Nelly’s thinking that, well, my pitcher has to run over there. Maybe if I go grab the ball, Nimmo’s going to beat me anyway. And even Stanley Marte is talking to him, probably telling him, Josh, I’ve been in this league a long time. Got the person in third, one and two. The pitch blowing away. And now it’s two and two on NMO with Vento S on deck. And Brandon can always work a count. Shelby Miller set with that teal glove. The 2- two outside and it’s full. And again, if NMO can just get on and load the bases, that would bring the tying man to the plate. Naylor holding on Marte. Catel Marte playing couple steps in from second base from that deep spot at second. Payoff hit hard toward short. Leaping catched by Peromo for the out. Imo might have hit it off the end of the bat. He definitely served it that way and Purdomo was all over it. A leaping catch and there’s two outs now for Ventos. It sounded like Brandon broke his bat and Purdomo makes a really nice catch and bails out Josh Naylor. The Mets are down to their final out. It is 5 to one Arizona. First and third for Ventos. First pitch. Marte goes. Pitch taken for a strike. No throw down to second base. It’s a defensive indifference there as Herrera paid no mind to Marte. Bentos has a hit in three trips. One of the four hits tonight for the Vets. And he calls for time. By the way, tomorrow that 3:40 Eastern time start facing Merrill Kelly. Really good pitching matchup for the finale. Miller’s 01 check swing pitch is in there anyway. Slider and it’s nothing and two and the Mets are down to their final strike. Sodto at third, Marte at second. Five to one Arizona. Miller comes set first base side of the rubber. 02 just missed outside with 96. Herrera framed it. Grip Gibson did not give it to Shelby Miller. Daventos try again. Try to keep this game alive. Two on, two out. One-two pitch down low. Two balls and two strikes. It’s Jeff McNeel on deck. Mets have found themselves even though they are 10 games over 500 and the the 13 losses. There’s usually a late fight something late in the game. They got a little something here. Two on, two out, two just missed outside. Kind of a similar pitch to the one two pitches ago. Oh, this time Gibson clinched and it’s full. Terrific take by Vientos. That pitch was just off the plate away. Got to keep the inning alive. Infield is back. Outfield is straight up. Two on, two out. The payoff popped up shallow center. Purdomo out from short. Thomas is in. It is Thomas who makes the catch and the ball game is over. The Diamondbacks behind seven. Brilliant innings from Zack Gallon. Have even this three-game set at a game a piece. They win this one five to one in the ninth for the Mets. No runs, one hit, one walk, and two left.
