🔴LIVE 🔴Seattle Mariners VS Oakland Athletics /May 06/ Mlb the show 25

Westchup on the show. It’s the Seattle Mariners taking on the Athletics. And now, please welcome. First pitch coming your way next. [Applause] Just about set to go now. And towing the slab in this one, Luis Severino. and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Tap foul at the plate. First pitch 1235 right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Outside at a count one and two. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. and foul ball. Goes down looking. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter. And I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Jorge Palano in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One out. Base is empty. Swings through that one for strike one. And there’s a ball. Foul ball there. I got three and two. Swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Sodestrom snags it on the run. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers. And then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bullpen. You could tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack, a lot of patience, just like you said. Julio Rodriguez stands in now, looks at that one inside. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. Two out. Space is empty. Highf fly ball right field. pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is that. Mariners nothing. A’s coming to bat. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the hill, Bryce Miller. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trusted, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler, and that’s off the outside edge. And that is ball one. But why the kick the pitch and now two and nothing and that one fouled off. Next offering is fouled back. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back gone. He flexes his power with that swing and the A’s jump in front. It’s one- nothing. [Applause] He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Good power, not great in the OBP department. And a sweeper misses for a ball. Come on. Gets the call and the count one and one. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. batting. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. Sod in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. One down. Base is empty. He swings and fouls one off. Here’s the O2. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. First offering and it just misses. Fast ball for a strike at 95. And a big swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes. Foul ball still a one and two count and that one missing low. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. The A’s strike first. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Top of the second and now the big time power threat, Cal Raleigh. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win, every manager’s dream. Way high and as well, lots of pop in that bat. So you combine the slug with really good defense. swing and a chopper out to short. Handles, throws to first and quickly one away in the second. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. And now it’s Rowdy Tles. Severino, a righty that throws with power. 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. And that’s off the inside edge. And one and one. The one-1 is fouled off and down on strikes. Now two out. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah, and that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it? So now the DH spot. Miles Mastro and the pitch is outside. Ball one. And that is downstairs now two and0. That one out to right. Rooker makes the grab on the run. After an inning and a half, it’s one- nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second. And now the catcher comes up to him. Shay Langalers. Miller back to work right through there for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. And the O2 ripped on a line to center. Rodriguez makes the grab and there’s one down. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. This is JJ Bladeet. Fought off. Foul one. Foul ball. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and2. stays alive. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Good eye on that spot. Really good take, especially with two strikes. fouls it off. Still one and two. Swing and a ball popped up. Carous. Two away now. Batty seven. The short stop number five. Two down. Base is empty. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. That one ops against the fence, throws to second. and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Absolutely hammered that baseball very loud coming off the bat. 107 was the exit velocity. And at that speed, it’s going to be a great result more often than not. So, runner at second, two down. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Wild pitch. Catcher gets a piece. Wilson up to third on the wild pitch. Heads up base running right there. He just hasn’t had it in this one. Been fighting himself out there. And that’s just another example of it. We’ll see if he can find it at all while he’s still out there. Baby up and in. Two and0. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished a little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Fast ball for a strike. That one way outside counts full. Three and two. Luis Urias in the on deck circle for the A’s. Two outs in a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. swing and a ball ripped right field. That one back and that one is gone. A two-run shot, his first homer of the year, and they add to the lead. It’s 3 nothing. Those are the at bats that leave pitchers exhausted. He had to throw a lot of pitches and still gave up the long ball. That’s a bad combo. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] Two outs, nobody on. Here’s Luis Orias. Highf fly ball out towards left field, ranging back, makes the catch up against the wall. The A’s with a two-run blast as the A’s are on top. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the start of the inning. Here is the rookie third baseman, Ben Williamson. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. base knock center field and that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and it’s a double. Their first hit in this one. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Now the left fielder, Leo Reebas, right through there for a strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Severino. That one off the mark and the count is one and one. Hard hit left side yet he beats the throw. He’s safe. That’s a play you expect your shortstop to make pretty much every time. Pretty routine. Hard to tell if he didn’t get a great grip on it or the mechanics on him just broke down, but that gives this offense an extra out to work with. First and second, no outs. Ryland Thomas up next for the Mariners. That one’s in there. and one and ball one. [Music] One and one. Williamson on second. Reebas out at first with nobody out. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Get out of here. Just missed. And it’s filled up. First and second here. No outs. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And down on strikes he goes. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Back to the top of the Seattle order. JP Crawford gets a chance to hit. Caught looking. His first time up. Yeah, that’s fouled off. one out. Runners at first and second. In the air, out to center. Leay moving in on this one. grabs it on the run. Two away. They trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run. And we saw it right there. That’s a player you want patrolling center field. Someone who can attack the ball off the bat. The batter now, Jorge Palano. fly to left his first time and downstairs and a foul ball. Severino kicks, steals on the ground to third to first. That ends the frame. Mariners leave a couple. They trail it here. 3 nothing. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the DH. Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler. It’s been a rough start on the mound for this guy. This third inning so important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. Misses. Yeah, the count one and two. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close 02 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. It’s two and two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner and it remains two and two. Well struck right field and it looks like trouble around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Here comes the skipper, and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Bryce Miller is done and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. A new arm into the game, the righty Ryan Woo. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Now here is Brent Rooker. He’s 0 for one. just off the outside edge. One and0. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. That one missing inside. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Woo checks the runner. Butler back in on a dive. Man at second. Ripped into right center. And that should be extra bases. The run comes in to score from second and it’s four nothing. and he’s into second with nobody out. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Next to hit, Tyler Soderstrom struck out swinging his first time. right down to shoot and it’s 0 and one and that one fouled off. The A’s looking to add another going to count one and two. That one missed. Next offering [Applause] upstairs, baby. Let’s go. Gets a piece and stays alive. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. He’s safe. It’s five nothing. Mad at first. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Nobody out. Runner at first. And that misses off the outside edge. right through there for a strike. You know, these A’s doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. And there’s a foul ball. Foul ball and it remains a full count. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up on the ground to the left and it goes just foul. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. That’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. He’s 0 for one. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Sodrom at second on Duhar at first with no outs. And now one and two. And that’s downed away. That one misses and now three and two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. That one 95 to finish him off. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation. It’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. The 10 swinging a foul straight back. Runners at first and second with one gone. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two on, one out. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. So, first and second with two outs. And now the shorts stop. Jacob Wilson one for one with a double and a run scored and a foul ball. First and second, two down. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Rodriguez pulls it down and that will end the inning. So, two runs on three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. On to inning number four. It’s the A’s five and the Mariners nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Julio Rodriguez. [Music] Mariners. That one misses. And that’s ball one. The Mariners knew what they had. Signed him in July of 2017 for a little under $2 million. Oh, now this is blasted way back there. On its way. Gone. He made him pay for that one. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they’re on the board. It’s 51. Well, I’m sure there’s a big grin on his face right now. Boo. He’s probably had some of those that didn’t stay fair, but off the bat it looked like it was going to bend. Foul. Was able to keep it in there. Tucked it nicely and he gets the jog around the bases. Good for him. Raleigh batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. That’s in there. No balls, two strikes. Fast forward to 2022 for Julio Rodriguez to win the Rookie of the Year. The Seattle Mariners were then compensated with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the draft in 2023. Part of a new CBA enticing teams to promote their good young players. Tles at the plate for the second time as he takes ball one. One out. Base is empty and a run in. Top half of inning number four. Check swing called strike. Swings and misses. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. The wine, the kick, and the one, two, and that one finds its way through. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. got the top of the ball a little bit but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Mastery the next to hit takes outside. Now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Double play ball to second. There’s one and it’s a double play to end the inning. Seattle gets a little closer on this solo homer. It’s now a 51 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Gabe Spire. and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. Curts leading things off and takes a strike. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Fly ball center field. Rodriguez settles under it, makes the grab. One away. Now batting second. And now Luis Rias fly to left his first time. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Swinging a foul out of play. And that misses now. Two balls in a strike. Fast ball is outside. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. in the air on the infield. Williamson he makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting designated hitter Lawrence. So the batting order turns over. Next is the designated hitter Lawrence Butler. He’s already homered here in this one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Next offering is fouled back. Come on. Just missed. Swing and a miss. Two and two now. Well, and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Struck him out looking and the A’s are gone in order. They’re up 5-1. We go to the top of the fifth. And now for Seattle, Ben Williamson. Severino back to work. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Justin Sterner, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Springs, the lefty, warming up as well. That one fouled off. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. One ball, two strikes. Swing and a little roller right side. Fires to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. Now batting leftielder Leo Rebas. And stepping in for the Mariners, Leo Reebas. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Gets under it and pops it up. And that’s a foul ball. And they’ll do it again. Not close with that one. Now one and two. And there’s a ball. Swings and misses. struck him out. Two outs, space is empty. And up next for Seattle, Ryland Thomas. His first at bat was a strikeout. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Out there to center. Leed on the move as he glides back, hops over the wall, and that’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. you get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty and now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. So runner at second, two down. JP Crawford up next for the Mariners and it’s fouled away. Rudder at second. Two down. Next offering is in for a strike. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. The 02. That’s inside. Thomas stands at second with two gone. Fights that one away. Still one and two. The shorts stop takes a ball. swing and a miss and he got him. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. One left for Seattle. They’re down here five to one. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Andres Munoz. He last pitched two days ago. Now the number two hitter, Brent Rooker, a former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. That clips the corner. Munoz a 62 righty. He features a slider, a fourseamer, and he works in a sinker. Swing and a miss. 0 and two. I guess you throw it that hard, you can get away with locations like that. Right down the middle, but I still think it’s a dangerous pitch. Don’t want to do it again. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls. looking in the 02 count. Just a poor at bat. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. That’ll fire up the dugout. Home run number 10 on the year. And they add on. It’s 6-1. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Base is empty, one away. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Miguel Anduhar. Strike one. This one in the air. Williamson has this one sized up. They got it for out number two. Now batting catcher Shay Lang. Two down, base is empty at the plate. Shay Langalers for two in this one. In there at the knees. Foul ball there. 0 and two now. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Raleigh gathers, throws to first. That completes the strikeout. Inning over. A solo homer adds to the A’s lead. And this is now a 61 ball game. Back after this on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Jeffrey Springs. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. And now for Seattle, Jorge Palanco. first pitch and he just misses. And that’s outside. Hit hard on the ground is short. It over to first. Leadoff man retired in the six. Talk about being able to dial up the velocity. That first base over there might need a little pad inside that first baseman’s mid. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. He’s already homerred in this game. First pitch misses. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Justin Sterner, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fly ball to right. Rooker makes the grab. Two down. Now batting catcher. So it’s their last chance in this one. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. Ball one there. No, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. Two down. Nobody on. And that’s outside. Ball two. Two count to a guy like this at the plate. You’ve got to throw a pitcher’s pitch. Don’t just try to get a strike. He could make you pay. That one misses. And now three and 0. That one fouled hard the other way. One strike away. Battling here as he fouls it away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year, to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. 6-1 is your final here today. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
