🔴LIVE 🔴New York Yankees VS Oakland Athletics/May 09/MLB THE SHOW 25

out. Go now. And on the hill in this one, Gunnar Hogland singing. He’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch. Well, when you have a guy that can limit the opponent to very little run production, you have a great chance to win a ball game when he takes the mount. He’s just having an outstanding season so far. You hope he can maintain it because if he can, he’ll be in a nice conversation at the end of the year. All right, ready to get underway now. It’s the DH Ben Rice. Just off the outside edge and this one is off and running. First pitch 705 in the air left field nabs it and there’s one down. Okay, let’s check out the lineup. This has been a good productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog. I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences, but if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. That one outside, one ball, one strike. Judge enjoyed success at the major league level right away. Hit 52 home runs as a rookie, breaking Mark Magguire’s record and became the first Yankee to win rookie of the year since some guy named Derek Jeter. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Reaches but can’t haul it in. That’s exactly what you’re taught to do with that pitch, but it’s not that easy to execute in a live at bat. Great job of staying on that breaking ball down and away and shooting it to the opposite field. Now it’s going to be Austin Wells and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Fouled off left side. Judge leads off first with one away. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. them out. Fouls it back with two strikes. That one lines softly the other way. It’ll fall into left field for a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Backto-back singles. Kind of just punched it out there the other way. He didn’t hit it real hard, but he got just enough of it to dunk it behind the infield. And I tell you what, you’ll take those every day you can get them. Here is Goldmith. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. That one finds the zone. And that is strike one. And downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Runners at first and second with one gone. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Struck him out looking. Well, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. And up to the plate comes Cody Bellinger. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Two aboard, two outs. And now the count is even. Line to left and that’s just foul. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Two on, two outs. That’s off the mark. And now it’s three and two. Anthony Vulpi in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Swang in a line drive. Base hit out into center field and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. First and second, two outs. Anthony Vulpi the next to hit. Well struck right field back there. Tattooed to tater town and gone. So he blasts one out the other way. It’s 4 nothing. He ambushed him right there, Siggy. Yeah, swinging on that first pitch and I think losing one over the fence is exactly what he had in mind as well. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. Taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Base is empty with two away. Jason Dominguez getting ready to hit and first offering is fouled off. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. Give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. And a pitch outside with a breaking ball. And a ground ball to first and it goes just foul. You know, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Hard ground ball base knock. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Batting eight third base. Now here is Oswaldo Cabrera that clips the zone. and one. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs. That one ripped. And that should be extra bases. Dominguez around third. He’ll score. Four hits in a row. And they’re really swinging it here. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And here comes Mark Kat as he’s ready to make a change and go to the bullpen. Gunnar Hogland out of the game and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Left-hander out of the bullpen, JP Sears. He’s been so good against lefties. JP Sears. So runner at second, two down. Stepping in Jorby Boss. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. Cabrera stands at second with two gone. That’s in there and it’s nothing and two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. That misses now. One and two. Action in the pen down there. Oswaldo Beo, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Two outs and one in scoring position. Ground ball up the middle. Dives and he can’t hang on. He beats the throw and he reaches safely. Now that isated Ben Rice. So now here’s the DH Ben Rice. in there for strike one. No balls, one strike. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Swings and misses. Ends the inning after they racked up a bunch of runs. All in all, 10 come to the plate. They bat around and five score. Bottom half of inning number one. Coming up, it’s the Yankees five and the A’s nothing. Back here with my pal Singi and on the mound today, Max Freed. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him. And they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Bottom of the first and now the shorts stop. Jacob Wilson delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One short stop takes a ball. and it’s fouled away on the ground. Vulpi throw is high and over his head. doesn’t get too far away, so no one moves up. Though, as an offense, you want to get the crowd involved right away. Get that good energy working for you. But this time, the defense does it for him. Always a great opportunity when you can get your leadoff guy on base to start the game. And it doesn’t matter how it happens. Man at first, nobody out. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. That’s in for a strike. We talked so much about how starting pitchers prepare for their starts. I talked with Max Freed and one of the things he told me back in 19, he and Lucas Gilito started using MLB The Show to go over scouting reports. Swinging a foul straight back. Now an 02 from Free and a sweeper misses for a ball. Nobody out. Runner at first. Outside low. Two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Freed out of the stretch fires. Swings and miss has struck him out. Well, even though he strikes out, he saw a lot of pitches and he battled. Plus, he gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see more from the pitcher. Not the result he wanted, but it’s still a good at bat. Now, a chance for Brent Rooker. Glove side, but it gets through. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Miguel and Duhar. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. First pitch and he just misses. Runners are at the corners. One away. All right, Miguel that catches the outside corner and one and one. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. This one’s got a chance onto the track and he makes the catch. Runner tags from third. He’s in on the sacrifice fly. It’s 5-1. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. This is JJ Blade. Glade at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. pop up here. Third base side. And that is that one run, one hit, one error, and one left. One inning in the books here. It’s the Yankees five and the A’s won. And we’re back. Now it’s Aaron Judge up to the plate all around. I think if you asked anyone in this organization who’s the best hitter in the lineup, they would say him. Yeah, the first offering is not close. You know, Boo Judge is one of those guys that leaves his mark on everything he does. Yes, he’s great at baseball, but he’s also known for working with charities and in his community. He’s a special human. No doubt about that. And that one handled and quickly one away in the second. Now batting catcher Austin Wells. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Bring them home. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. One out. Base is empty. Slow ground ball to the right side. And he takes it himself for the out. Two down. Base is empty. Now it’s Goldmid up to the plate. Struck out looking at his first at bat. And there’s the ball. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you got a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two out space is empty. That missed. That’s a ball. And a swing and a miss there. I think he was sitting off speed there. Swing and a miss. Handcuffed him with that slider. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Yanks held in check. They’re up 5-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Lawrence Butler. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. Max Freed will go to work. on the outside corner. Strike one. Can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Here’s Luis Orias on the ground to the left and foul ball. One down, base is empty and ball one. Our umpire behind the plate, Jerry Hillsdale. High praise for Jerry when we talk to people around the game. Yeah, no doubt about it, Boo. He’s very straightforward, very consistent back there. So, most of the time you’re not even going to think about him. That’s a good thing. That one close rule to ball. Two and one. just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. So, here’s Brown at the plate. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. battling here as he fouls it away. Let’s go. A change up missing. One and two to count. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. Had a breaking ball misses outside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. A solo shot, his second of the year. It’s 52. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched, taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Here’s the catcher, Johnny Pareda. Basketball for a strike. Ground ball right side and foul ball. Two down. Nobody on foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s 52. Back after this on the show. On to the third inning. Here’s Cody Bellinger. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. Sears back to work and first offering is fouled off. You know, these Yankees putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. Looking at the numbers, they’ve got four hits when they’re behind in the count. That says they are absolutely battling at the plate and just not giving up despite what the count says. That misses now. one and two. And if you’re a manager or a hitting coach, you love to see your team really fighting for every at bat, every pitch. It tells you a lot about how they showed up to the ballpark today. Swinging a ground ball up the middle and it’s through for a hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Really protecting with two strikes right there. Pitch wasn’t even close, but man, he got the barrel to it somehow. Nice job of bad ball hitting. Vulpi takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. And a swing and a miss. One and one. The next offering misses and it’s two and one. Late swing fouled off. Bellinger gets his lead at first with nobody out. Vulpi tries to hold up. Appeal to first and Kenny Jansen punches him out. That’s a strike out. Jason Dominguez stepping in now for the Yankees. Singled and scored his first time. That misses the zone. One and0 man at first. One away. That one is upstairs. Next offering in there for a strike and a count two and one in today’s game. Not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Fouls one off. two and two. Gets a piece and stays alive on the ground right side. Four, six, three, but he beats it. Good hustle and the inning continues. Third base, Oswaldo Cabrera. And stepping in for the Yankees, Oswaldo Cabrera. He doubled home a run in his first AB. pieces lead runner around second coming home. Safe and they lead by four. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. And next for New York, Jor beat BB Boss reached on an infield single his first time. Misses off the play and that’s ball one. And the sweeper catches the plate. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Man on second. Two down. That one fouled off. Two and two. Highfly ball lifted in the air right field. Urias snags it and that is that. Yankees strike for a run on the RBI double. It’s now 62. Major League Baseball is on the show as we go to the last of the third and the batter will be the shortstop, Jacob Wilson. And that one upstairs, ball one. rip to third. Tosses to first and a quick out number one. Now batting first baseman Tyler Sodrom at the plate. Tyler Soderstrom 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And first offering is fouled off. And there’s a foul ball. Next offering upstairs. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Not close with that one. Now two and two. That’s a ball. tried to attack with the sweeper. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Maximus notches the K. He’s really good hitting the baseball. the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Two outs, space is empty. And next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. One for one with a single so far. And that misses ball one. And another ball Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. That one finds the corner and that’s strike two. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. stays alive. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Three up, three down for him there. On to inning number four. Yankees six and the A’s two. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Ben Rice. The designated hitter, Ben Rice. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. And first offering is fouled off. Rice goes 6’1, 26 years old, and he’s usually a first baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. Now, a high-fly ball out to left center. Le calls it in and there’s one away now. Batting rightiel and now big number 99 Aaron Judge singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. Come on. Swinging a foul straight back. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. That pitch gets the inside corner and it’s 0 and two. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. This one could be trouble around first, heading for two. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. double into the gap and that was a really nice swing to beat the inside pitch. He just beat him to the spot. Kept his hands tight inside that baseball and that just allowed him to drive it into the alley right there. One out, runner at second. Welds now at the plate. One for two. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Judge the runner at second with one away. That’s now he breaks his bat to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. Two on, one out. Paul Goldmid digs in now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one fouled off. Come on, turn the double. Next offering is fouled back. Swang at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Here’s the throw to the plate and he’s out. Well, Boo, you have to be able to trust your coaches in this spot. That’s what baseball is all about. You’re relying on the people around you to set you up for success. Players need to rely on their coaches the same way they rely on their teammates. Here comes Belly to take his cuts. That’s in there. Let’s go and go, baby. Let’s go. The 01. And a foul ball. That one inside. Look out. That missed. That’s a ball. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. in the dirt. Anthony Vulpi would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. That one the other way. That’s a hit. Here comes Wells around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s 7 to2. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Pitch was away and he did exactly what you’re supposed to do with it. Drive it the other way. Just go with the pitch. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. He’s already homerred in this game. And first offering is fouled off. First and second, two down. And that’s a little bit high. The one-1 is fouled off. swing and a miss struck him out. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a 72 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. You know, these athletics, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Swinging a high-fly ball ragged field. Judge has it sized up. makes the catch and there’s one gone. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Stands in here, takes ball one low. The Yanks leading by five. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And another ball swing and a ball lifted left field. Makes the grab for the second out. Now batting rightielder. Two down, base is empty. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. That’s off the mark. And now 2 and 0. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Next offering is in for a strike. Two one. Fast for a strike. Two down. Nobody on. That misses the zone. Three and two now. Fights it off. He’ll see another. That one lifted to left. Dominguez on his way over and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is the third out of the inning. So they go quietly there. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Yankee seven and the A’s two. We go to the top of the fifth now. Here is Jason Dominguez. Dominguez swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. You know, these Yankees really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They keep finding themselves behind in the count, but it really hasn’t mattered in this one. Seven of their hits have come in disadvantaged counts, and I think that helps create a mental advantage for these guys. Now, this is in the air down the line and makes the grab. And there’s one down. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. And it one hops the wall. It’s a double. Third hit of the night for him. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. Here’s the second base, Jor Boss. That one’s in there. 0 and one. One out and a runner at second. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And that drops in for a strike. Pitch misses there and it’s one and two. O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. And a swing and a miss. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Ben Rice will hit next. 0 for three in this one. Ben Rice. And first off is fouled off. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. Man at second. Foul ball. The 02. One and two. Ruer at second. Two down. And that’s a base hit into left field. Coming home, the throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s now a six-run lead. Now batting rightielder. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. JP Sears won’t go any further tonight. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching. So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s. Oswaldo beat and he’s had three days off since he pitched last. So, expect him to be totally rested. I’m sure he’s itching for this opportunity right now. Yeah, the hardthrowing righty trying to secure these outs against a potent Yankee lineup. And it starts with Aaron Judge. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Judge waits and that one way outside. Ball two. Rice leads off first with two down to the inning. Baby, let’s go. Right through there for a strike. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Fast ball is outside. Two outs and ball four, two aboard. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Wells. Here’s the Yankees catcher now, Austin Wells. In there. And it’s 0 and one. Two on, two outs in the air. Left side. Brown sizing this one up. And that is that. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Yankees eight and the A’s two. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Luis Urias. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. You know, these A’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it. This ball is roped and it gets down into the gap in right center around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a leadoff double in the fifth. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Seth Brown up next for the A’s. He’s already homerred here in this one. Fast for a strike. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Next offering is fouled back. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Last half of inning number five. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Calls it in. And there’s one away. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Johnny Para getting ready to hit. He struck out swinging at his first at foul. Let’s go to just missing there. It’s a ball in two strikes. Really good take, especially with two strikes. in the dirt. Blocked 2-2 now. Sea strikes him out for the second time today. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Jacob Wilson for two in this one. And first off is fouled off. Little tardy on that fast ball. He’s going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. Man on second, two down in the dirt. Fouls it off. Still one and two. This one in the dirt to third. Tag got him. Bang bang play and the inning is over. A’s go quickly and quietly there and it’s still 82. And we’re back. And here’s the first baseman, Paul Goldmid. Beo back to work. That one missed. Movement in the bullpen. Travis Smalls up and throwing. Springs also throwing. pulls that one foul center field. Leay under it. Carous it and there’s one away. Now batting center Bellinger up to hit. Three for three with three singles. He’s got an MVP and a rookie of the year under his belt. And a guy who’s played every day as a first baseman, every day as a right fielder, every day as a center fielder. You won. Swing and a miss. 0 and two. Next pitch misses outside and the count is one and two. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So digging in, Anthony Vulpi, Anthony and first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top half of the six. Go, baby. Let’s go. And that’s in the dirt. And that one missing low. There’s the strike. on a line base hit and that extends the inning. Now batting leftielder Jason. So singing, let’s dive into the numbers courtesy of Stackcast. Do you even feel contact being made when you hit a ball that hard? No, I don’t think so, Boog. I mean, that’s just the best feeling in the world as a hitter. you square it up perfectly and it’s like you didn’t even swing the bat. And there are times the ball feels heavy off your bat, you know it. But this is not one of those cases. He sent this one flying 114 mph. So that’s flexing your muscles a little bit. And that is out of play. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly, but they get the out at first and that’ll do it for the inning. So, one hit is all they get. Top of the order, do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Yankees eight and the A’s two. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning and now Jacob Wilson. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Just missed. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. on the inside corner for a strike. Swings through that one for strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift in a two- strike count. But sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. Tyler Soderstrom now at the plate. Sodrom swinging it much better this season in away games than here at home. Edge of the zone for a strike. Go and one. The A’s with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom of the six. That one down the line. And that’s a fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s in with a stand up double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that with a pitch away. That’s exactly what you want to do with it. Drive it the other way. And right there, just barely able to keep it fair down the line for the double. One out, runner at second. And now the DH, Brent Rooker. And that one upstairs. Ball one. That’s a ball. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Mark Lighter Jr., a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Cruz also getting ready. check swing and he went and it’s two and one. Two and one. Sodrom the runner at second with one away. That’s a little bit low. Out towards right center. That’s well struck way back there. And that one is out of here. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 84. This game just got a little more interesting with that home run. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Max Freed will give way. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Mark Lighter Jr. gets handed the rock out of the pen and he has some nasty breaking stuff. All right. All right. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Miguel Anduhar. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. Still only one out here in the inning. And another ball. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. That one at the knees for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. One down. Base is empty. And a base hit in the right. Up next for the A’s centeriel. One gone runner at first. Here’s the center fielder JJ Blade. Outside corner. There’s a strike. Now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. That catches the zone for a strike. 0 and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. on the ground. Could be two. The throw to second is offline. Didn’t look to me like he got a great handle on the ball as it came out of his hand. Cold nights not really fun to play in and it makes it tough to hit as well. Makes it tough to throw and might have played a factor right there. First and second, one out. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Popped in the air. Left field. Makes the grab. Two down. Now batting. Second base. Luis up next for the A’s. There’s the strike. Lighter. He’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike two. No, as a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swinging miss. Next pitch is outside. Yeah, the count one and two. Swinging a ground ball and that one finds its way through now. A long throw home, but it’s offline. It’s eight to five. back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Here’s the left fielder, Seth Brown up the middle. They take the force out. Inning over. And it could have been worse. So they get three runs on four hits, two errors, but two are left stranded. We’re through six full. It’s the Yankees eight and the A’s five. We go to the top of the seventh. Digging in, Oswaldo Cabrera, though he came up clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. There’s a swing and a drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. It’s a double. His fourth hit of the game. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. Here’s the second baseman. Jor beat Boss one for three. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Let’s go. Go, baby. Let’s go. And he swings through that one. Yankees up by three. Got him swinging. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. And there’s one away. Next is the designated hitter, Ben Rice. That one ripped but fouled. Pitch misses there. One and one. man at second. Sliced hard but fouled. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball. That one off the mark and the count is even. Two and two. He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. And that’s outside and a full countdown. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. I’d say that was a pretty generous call right there. And when a pitcher’s getting that call, there’s really not much you can do about it as a hitter. And you know what? Guys today are so disciplined to stay with their approach and game plan. Not surprised at all that he took that pitch. Here comes Aaron Judge. He’s got the P. He gets the intentional walk here. And now a force at any base with two gone. Now batting catcher Austin Wells. First and second, two outs. And stepping in for the Yankees, Austin Wells. Come on, let’s go to golf, baby. Let’s go. Fouled off. He was late. That one finds the corner and that is strike two. Wow, just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. That one just missing inside. Going to count one and two. Cabrera at second. Judge at first. Two out of the inning. Swing and a ball ripped right field. And that one back and that one is gone. A gigantic blast. his second homer of this series and they add to their lead. It’s 115. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Oswaldo Beo is done. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Travis Smalls on a pitch out of the pen here on for his major league debut. So, we’ll see if he’s ready for the big stage. He just has to remember this is the same game that he’s played all the way through the minor leagues to this point. The only difference there just more people in the stands and it’s a bigger stadium, but the game itself is still the same. Look at the catcher. Whatever fingers he puts down, that’s what you throw and just let him lead you in this one. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Leay makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. This game’s a bit of a blowout, Singy. Let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it, Singy. One of the biggest ways the game has changed, bullpen arms. So many elite level bullpen arms. Yeah, and I’m glad I’m not playing anymore. I mean, it’s just a nightmare. When that door swings open out of the bullpin, you know what’s coming in is 95 and above with at least one nasty pitch. Right back to him on the mound to first. One up, one down. Now batting number five. And now the shorts stop. Jacob Wilson. Lighter measures 6 feet even, 33 years old. and they went out and made a trade for him last season. There’s the strike. The Yankees up big in this one here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Up next for the A’s first base. And now Tyler Sodstrom. Sod check swing and he went. That’s strike one. And a big swing and a miss. line drive. Nice grab. This one pretty well decided at this point. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Yankees 11 and the A’s five. We go to the eighth. And stepping in for the Yankees, Cody Bellinger and a swing and a miss. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Hogan Harris, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. So a foul ball makes it one and two and downstairs. Swing and a miss. Pulled the string on the change up. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there. And that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, the ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. Off the mark there. And it’s a ball and a strike. late on that fast ball. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Two outs. base is empty. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jason Dominguez and misses inside and that misses two and 0. Two balls, no strikes. Swang and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance in one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases and that’s a two out double. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Man at second here with two away. And up next for New York, Oswaldo Cabrera. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And a strike on the outside edge. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one’s back. Going gone. He’ll circle the bases. His second of the year. It’s 135. Singi. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. Was like BP all over again. Stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Two down. Nobody on in there at the knees and a count one and one out to short. Wilson sends it to first and that is that. Two-run blast for the Yankees this inning. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back out of the bottom of the eighth. Now it’s the DH Brent Rooker. Rooker up and in. And that is ball one. That one found hard the other way. He swings and fouls one off. And it’s even up. Two balls, two strikes. And that one lifted in the air center field. Bellinger makes the grab. One down. Now batting third base. Miguel Anduhar digs in now. And that one’s a little bit low. One and0. Next offering is fouled back. The Athletics with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. All right, there you go. JJ Blade up next for the A’s out to short into the outfield base hit and out to a board. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. So, first and second with one man gone. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. Hit hard but foul off to the left. Now here comes the one. And that one fouled off. One out. Runners at first and second. cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. Well, he used the slow curve very effectively right there. He just spun it up to the plate and had his guy way out front. Not only a good pitch, but a really good job of setting it up. So, first and second with two outs. Next to hit, Luis Urias. He’s been a great free agent sign. There’s the strike up high and one on Duhar over at second. Leed on to first with two down. Strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count. And this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. to go down to the dirt. Swing and a miss in time. So the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him. And that’s that. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. Nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set to start the ninth in this one. And now the DH Ben Rice Smalls back to work. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Looks like he’s sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. And foul ball and O2. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Here is Aaron Judge. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. And that’s a strike. The Yanks up big in this one here in the top of the ninth. And there’s a ball. That’s a ball. One ball, one strike. Gets the call at a count. One and two. One down, base is empty. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another base hit up the middle. So, a man aboard now with one away. having himself a really nice game at the plate. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees and first offering is fouled off. So here in the three spot, Chris, a hitter low average but high slug. Well, one thing he’s going to lean on are the metrics. His exit velocity has been really good. But he’s just had some bad luck hitting the ball right at people. Pitch misses inside and the count even one and one on the ground right side. Four six three double play and the inning is over. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. The Yankees lead it 135. Fernando Cruz taking over on the mound. Left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. And here is Seth Brown. Brown again. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Swing and a miss. Splitter in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires to first. Got him. One away on the strikeout. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Johnny Pareda, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch misses. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Late that time. And it’s strike two. And that skips in the dirt. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out now. Only one out remaining. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Wilson stands in here, tried to hold back his swing there, but went around. Two outs. That one ripped right center field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases and into second easily with a two out double. Had a pretty ugly going into this game up until that at bat. So a little sigh of relief there. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One ball, no strikes. just missed. Misses off the plate. And that’s ball three. Brent Rooker next to bat for the A’s. So now two on and two outs. Up next for the A and the batter now Brent Rooker. Rooker. Fast ball is outside. And a rope into center field. Base hit coming home. He will score and it’s an RBI single. 13-6. and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. So, two on with two away and now Miguel Anduhar. These are the moments you dream of as a hitter. Bottom of the ninth with a chance to tie or win the game. It’s time to live up to the big moment. right through there for a strike. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the last half of inning number nine. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. Tag. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this team was ready from the first pitch of the ball game. Swinging the bats, scoring runs, just very aggressive. I feel like they set the tone and that tone created a momentum that took them all the way to the finish line. Nice win today. 136 the final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
