And I’m not joined today as I usually am by my wonderful co-host Ian Bo. Ian is on vacation. He’ll be back for the next mailbag. Uh, but I am flying solo today. And I want to thank you all for sending us mailbag questions. Uh, there are plenty of things we’re going to talk about. We’re going to talk about Utah’s new name and logo. We’re going to talk about uh, unfortunately Joel Quenville. We’re going to talk about uh, Florian Jackie. Got lots of questions about about him. Uh, and we got a fun question about Daniel. Uh, we also want to talk a little bit about the Islanders as well. Uh, lots of questions in the mailbag and I also have to kind of justify my stance on Todd Thompson. Uh, which I’m happy to do. But first, uh, really quickly, Nick Suzuki uh, was questionable for the World Championships. He was invited by Team Canada. And if you remember, he was snubbed for the Foreign Nations because he did not attend uh, the World Championships last year for Team Canada. Uh but the thing with Nick Suzuki is that he’s always playing through something and this time around he was questionable and they made it clear it was he wasn’t cleared because of his health. Uh he will instead recover. Uh and uh in the end of season press conferences it was really clear because he literally said that he might have taken a rest if they weren’t trying to clinch for a playoff spot if they had already clinched it or if it was far off. So he does have that habit of playing through things and at the end of an 82 game season or in this case 82 plus 5 game season uh it it really you know he’s banged up at that point. So I don’t blame him for not going but I really do hope that the really ridiculous policy of not going to world championships precludes him from being considered for the uh team Canada Olympics lineup. I’m not saying he necessarily has to make it. I’m just saying he should not be disqualified for such petty reasons. And so, you know, he had a point per game plus season this year. It was something that he was aiming for last year and uh he finally achieved it this year. And he’s just going to have to come out of the gate and really just continue to build on what he showed this season, particularly in the playoffs. Like he kicked it up to another level despite being so banged up. And I really really do think that team Canada should take notice of that and consider him consider him for their for their lineup just on his own merit and not have anything to do with this ridiculous ridiculous idea that he didn’t go to worlds so he doesn’t deserve to go to the Olympics. Just take the best players so you can win. That’s that’s what you need to do. All right. I get really riled up about this stuff. Um so I’m going to get really really quickly also into uh I got some questions. They weren’t necessarily mailback questions, but I did want to uh clarify a little bit. Uh, I got a lot of questions about why I don’t want Tae Thompson. It’s not that I don’t. Uh, I’ll be really honest. There’s a couple of things. He’s a phenomenal player. Uh, he’s big, you know, scores lots of goals. He’s a center. There are a couple of things that personally the reason that I kind of feel like he doesn’t fit in is that I don’t feel that he has that creativity that they’re going for. Um, he’s he’s a goal scorer. He’s he’s good at what he does. He had a fantastic season last year on a really abysmal team. There’s something about Buffalo players, I think, that kind of turns me off. I don’t know if it’s because of the idea that Buffalo won’t trade to a division rival or there just seems something really unfortunate about about what goes on there. Uh, and I think the the the lineup here is very tight-knit and I think they have a system and I think everyone fits into it seamlessly whether they want to or not. And so I just have question marks about that. But obviously if he becomes available uh you know Montreal and Marty could probably do wonders with him and you know Kent Hughes would not be doing his job if he didn’t inquire and try to find out. I just feel like the re like the reason it’s coming up a lot is because people are like oh the Habs should go after him. Well is he available? Is Buffalo looking to trade him? They they did trade Eel. Like that that’s fair right? Like but that was a while ago. So again, I don’t think he’s available and I think that the Canadians are probably better served using their energy to chase other players. How about that? It’s not that I don’t want him or I wouldn’t be happy with him in the lineup. It’s just that I think that the Canadians would be wasting time and energy if they were just trying to pursue him instead of going out to look for other options. So that was it. And then I got a couple of questions there. There were a few people that asked about my reaction to Joel Quenville being hired in Anaheim. Uh, and as you know, Joel Quenville was implicated in covering up the sexual assault that happened on the Chicago Blackhawks around the time that they won their first Stanley Cup in 2010. And he was suspended from taking on NHL roles a couple years ago by the league. And then he was cleared a while ago, but there wasn’t really any, when I say cleared, I mean cleared to get hired. Um, but there wasn’t really much information about the work that he did uh to kind of show that he’s come back from that. And the Anaheim Ducks have claimed that they did their due diligence and they looked into it and they’re comfortable that he’s grown and learned, etc., etc., and that he uh he should have asked more questions essentially was the was the way that it was put is that oh he he he didn’t he he he knew about it but not really was was what the implication was and and what it has always been. Uh and I just think that there are so many potential exciting new ideas out there when it comes to hiring coaches. I don’t understand why we need to bend over backwards for a retread even if he was a good coach in the winning games aspect of it. You’re still charging essentially a bunch of boys, right? A lot of especially in Anaheim like it’s a rebuilding team, a young team. You’re essentially entrusting them to the care of someone. And you know, we know how how coaches are like the coaches are beall and endall for players. and you’re entrusting young people to his care when he’s shown to be at the very best case scenario the most uh charitable interpretation of what he did to turn a blind eye to sexual assault of your players. So of his players. So personally for me I would go and do something new and exciting. Right? The Canadians got a lot of criticism for hiring Marty even though he didn’t really have that much experience or official experience in coaching. Right? Look where they are now. just just go out there and find new names, right? And and again, like and there’s there’s even assistant coaches that you can go to that don’t have head coaching experience that you can kind of give um an opportunity to. There’s there’s plenty of people in the lower leagues. We don’t have to keep doing the same things over and over again. We don’t have to have retread GMs, uh, retread retread coaches and and like if you look at the teams that do ex that do exciting new things, they end up having often like it’s mixed results. Yeah, I understand. But often like you can find a team that has like a lot of success by giving a chance to somebody that doesn’t necessarily have a lot of experience in the NHL itself. So that’s how I feel on that. I got a lot of questions about it. So, I did feel that I should address it as soon as possible. And I just I I think that it’s not nec and the way that they announced it too, right? Everybody was talking about how the announcement was im imminent, but then they just made it official at the same time that the world was learning that there was a new pope. It just everything about it just feels just feels like why? There are so many options out there. There’s so many cool things you could have done and you went for a retread. And yes, admittedly, he does have experience. He’s got Stanley Cups, etc., etc. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just saying I’m not saying he’s a bad coach. I’m just saying that he’s maybe not a safe person for young players to be around. That’s all I’m saying. And I think that it bending over backwards to allow him that opportunity as opposed to going out and doing something fun, new, and exciting. Why? That that’s all I’m saying. So, that’s how I feel about that. Uh, and then I got a couple questions about Utah as well. How do I feel about their name? Uh, and how do I feel about uh their logo? So, I I think their name is fine. I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with it. I just I know that with Yeti there was some sort of copyright issues. I feel like Yeti would have been way cooler, but Mammoth is Mammoth is fine. The logo is fine. It’s just to me there’s nothing really punchy and exciting about it, right? like Seattle Kraken was cool. Uh and and so to to kind of follow it up with, you know, the Utah mammoth, it’s just it’s it’s it’s eh, you know, uh but mammoths are cool. Uh I just I feel like it’s just normal and fine and boring. And again, there’s so many exciting things you can do. Why do you do something that’s just eh? Is where I stand on that. Uh I don’t think it’s ugly. I just I think it’s fine. It’s just it’s not exciting. How about that? Like I’m not dying to go out there and get a jersey or or something like that with the Utah logo on it. All right, we’ve got plenty of mailbag left. Uh one of our good friends has a couple questions about uh some GMless teams at the moment and we’ll get into that in just one moment here on Locked On Canadians. And the question is now with Mark Bourgean potentially getting the GM role in Los Angeles. Should the Habs try and rescue Philip Deno? So, I love Philip Deno. I miss Philip Deno. I think Mark Mark Bersan did him dirty and then uh you know ended up there anyway. Um but I think that ship has sailed. I think that uh if you look at his point totals are pretty much similar to what he was doing here in Montreal. I think that the intangibles that he brings are what are the most important. I think like as a defensive forward he is fantastic. He would have been great in in this playoff run. I just think that ship has sailed entirely and the Canadians are looking to go younger. Uh, but I do like the idea of bringing him back. Boondoggle has a Bob question. Uh, it’s not actually a follow-up to that. It was a separate question. On a scale of 1 to 100, how awesomely cool am I? Well, you’re sending me mailback questions, so I would give you a 102 out of 100 for that. Uh, I’ve got a series of questions uh to do with the Maple Leafs. I’ve got bandwagon leaves fan asking, “Is this the year that I see some happiness that is because of my hockey team?” So, I went on the record yesterday saying that the uh not not here on Blue Bus, it was on Boo Sky. um that the Leafs fans vibe this year has been so pessimistic heading into the playoffs and just so dejected and just so n do we even want to that I really feel that this year the year that they have lost all hope if the if the Leafs are to win the Stanley Cup this is the year to do it. However, what I think is that they’re going to advance into the conference final and then there will be another fun choking narrative against the Capitals or Carolina. My bet was going to be on Carolina, but now I’m not so sure anymore. Um, and then we’ve got another Leaf fans question saying from Leaf for 1984. Why not the Leafs? Um, because I don’t want them to, but the real answer is because of the curse. They are cursed. Uh, we’ve got a question from Steve W. Could we interest you in one slightly used David Camp? The answer is absolutely not. The Montreal Canadians are not a dumping ground for players people don’t want. I’m also talking to you JD of Locked on Sharks uh for for that. So, we have a couple of more questions and all of these are on Blue Sky by the way. Uh we’ve got a question from good friend of the show Swanad. Uh how are we feeling about the Quenville hire by Anaheim? So, I talked about that in the first segment. Definitely not very positive. And Utah’s new Utah’s new name and logo. Talked about that one as well. Our good friend Boondoggle has an Islanders related question that I’m going to cover. Uh it was actually a couple weeks ago uh that he he brought it up first, but I’m going to cover it now that we have a little bit more information. The first question, the original question was um I seem to be singularly focused on New York Islanders. Barzel or Horvette would be targets I would pursue. And there’s also Dobson. New York Islanders present an opportunity to give to get two birds with one stone in a blockbuster trade. So since the original question, the Islanders fired their general manager and then subsequently uh won the the draft lottery and will be picking first. I think that if anyone is going to become available from the New York Islanders, I think it’s going to be Bo Horvat. Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Horvat is 30 years old already and is signed until I’m just going to confirm this is signed until 2028 uh at a cap hit of $8.5 million. Now I feel like that’s probably going to be who they would let go, especially now that they have the first overall pick. It seems more likely that they would hold on to Dobson uh as a player to build around on the defense end. Uh and we’ll see what they do. obviously, but I think that Matt Barzelle is a very attractive option. I just don’t think that they’re going to be wanting to part with him even though he does make more money. He has been uh injured a lot the past couple of seasons, but there he did have a point per game season, two years ago, I believe. Uh so, I don’t know. I I just I I feel like he’s probably more in their plans, not just because he’s younger. I think he’s just more synonymous with the Islanders. Uh so, if anyone’s going to be available, it’s Bo Horvette. Um, I think that he would be fine in, you know, in that 2C role. I really do, you know, I I I do think that he would bring what the Canadians need. I guess the question is, do they want to spend that much? especially uh with all kinds of players coming up and uh a lot of them what I realized yesterday when I was doing a little bit of research was a lot of these contracts for a bunch of players we expect to be the core of this team all come due at around the same time which is a few years from now when we expect them to be in full contending mode. Uh so it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. So yes, with Lou moving on, will it be easier or harder to get uh Islander straight? So if there’s a new jam, very often they do some they very often they do want to take the team in a new direction and they’ll get rid of one staple player or maybe a couple and before doing a whole scale kind of re revisiting, retooling, just look at what Ken Hughes did in his short amount of time, right? I what I like to do what I decided to do after the season was over was go back and watch the rebuild again and there’s this point where they show like departed players right all the players who left and all the players remaining and there’s just so many players who are gone right like the team that we’re looking at right now looks very different from a Burjan era team so I do think that new GMs do come in and try to make their mark unless they come in with a roster that is really just set to go. Uh, but I just I don’t know. Until we know who it is, we won’t know how they think. And until we know how they think, we won’t know which one of those is going to be available. But my guess at this moment is that the person who’s going to be uh available, most likely to be available, is going to be Bo Corvette. And I think the Canadian should look into it, but I think the Canadian should look everywhere for this 2C. I’m not I’m not averse. I’m not saying yes. I’m not saying no. I’m saying maybe. All right, we will get into our third segment. There’s a couple more mailback questions we have to get to, including what should the Montreal Canadians do with Kaden Primo. But first, this episode is brought to you by FanDuel. The NBA playoffs are in full swing, and every night delivers highlight worthy performances, major momentum shifts, and can’t miss moments. Make every moment with FanDuel, official sports betting partner of the NBA. Annis. All right, continuing on with the mailbag. Our good friends have sent us some mailbag questions via email as well. Uh, I really quickly want to um uh shout out Kyle Roberts who has sent us a very nerdy long it it looks like a long mailback question, but what it is is a segment, sorry, an entire episode idea. Uh, so we are going to cover that when my co-host comes back. So, we’ve got a question from Bill Vanv. I’ve not emailed for a while, but I’ve been watching and listening all season. Firstly, I listened to your call for shown segment ideas, and we’ll send a second email shortly with them, and sure enough, he did. So, we will be talking about those. My question is, who realistically could we see make the jump from Laval to the big club next year? I know they probably have an an eye towards Beck, but perhaps Mayu, Florian, Jackie, Kaden, Primo. Also, is there a role for a try-hard player like Jared Davidson on the big team at some point? Take care and happy scouting draft eligible players. So, I do also want to uh point out that we had another question about uh Florian Jackie, but also another question about Owen Beck and that Owen Beck comes from our good friend Andrew Birkshshire of the Gameover Network. Uh and make sure you are watching Gameover shows after the games. They’ve got a show for every Canadian team and they’re all really, really good. Uh especially as we still have a bunch of Canadian teams in there. I’ve even been watching the Leafs one, believe it or not. As much as I hate the Leaf Sands having s having any joy, it’s it’s fun to watch. Uh all right, where’s our question from Andrew Birkshshire? It is. If D’vorak leaves as UFA and Doc isn’t ready to play uh center, do you think the Habs are ready to are better served to graduate Beck or look outside for center depth? So uh this is assuming that Christian Dvarak is the third line center if he leaves which I don’t know is going to happen for sure. I think it’s being evaluated right now. Uh he was certainly a better in more integral part of the team after for nations than he was before it. Uh so definitely something to keep an eye out for. There’s probably discussions going on internally and then they’ll probably talk to him and see what he wants. Um, and then if he walks, I think the Canadians could graduate Beck. I don’t think that there’s any harm in him uh graduating. Now, I know Ian and I talked about it earlier and we said that if he’s not ready would be the reason to resign Christian D’vorak, right? Like if you think Beck is a year or two away, then you sign Christian D’vorak for not that much money for a couple years. I’m not against that. So, I think with Andrew’s question, it’s an eitheror question. So with Bill Vanvy as well, like Beck is like he’s he’s going to be graduated if Christian D’vorak leaves, right? The Canadians are still going to be looking for their 2C as um Jeff Porton pointed out it’s up to Kirby Duck where in the lineup he plays, right? They they still believe him in him as a player um and it’s up to him. So let’s also talk about Fy and Jackie because we got another question from uh Danny Joe, also a good friend of the show. And I really love Danny’s honesty about questions. Like he just asks them point blank. Also, um, hi Danny’s family if you’re listening while you’re while you’re at uh at dinner. Uh, the question is, “Everyone seems to want Florian in the in in the side. Myself included.” He’s British by the way. I love I love when like soccer terms are used for for hockey. Uh, myself included. But if Marty cannot swallow Arbor’s penalty minutes, can anyone explain how he will put up with Florian? How do we get more sandpaper in the lineup without them ending ending up nailed to the bench? So, here’s the thing that happens when you get NHL experience and Brendan Gallagher will be able to tell you that is that the longer you play in the NHL, the more you learn where the line is. Not the actual line, which should be enforced, but the real lifeline as the NHL enforces it. So, you get to learn the tricks of officiating and you get to learn to play right on the edge without getting into too much trouble. So, I think it’s fair to say that yes, it’s it’s I don’t I don’t think it’s Marty that can’t swallow Arbur’s penalty minutes. I think it’s just that the Canadians can’t afford to take penalties because they don’t have they you know, they didn’t have a lot of scoring. So, they couldn’t afford to put themselves in holes. Uh even though they ended up making the playoffs, like going forward, this is not going to be a recipe for success. You don’t want to be playing short-handed. You want to be playing even strength or obviously with the man advantage. So, uh I think that that that comes with maturity, right? So, I feel like Florian Jackie in year one will get stapled to the bench a lot. Florian Jakkey in year three will probably still be getting a lot of penalty minutes. And to be fair, they are a lot. Uh let me just look up the ones he had this year. He played 69 games for the Laval Rocket and he had 175 penalty minutes. Uh that’s what we’re talking about right now. But here’s the thing, he brings a toughness that we want in this lineup, especially in the forward core. Um and he also can score goals. He scored 24 goals this year for the Rocket. Like he, you know, he’s he’s not a bum. Um so I do agree with the idea of having more sandpaper. It’s just that you need to learn how to tow the line because let me tell you something. We know a lot about Tom Wilson and we know what he does, but do you know how long he how much he gets suspended? Not all that much. Because he knows exactly where the line is and he knows how to concuss a player without getting into trouble for it. I’m not advocating for concussions. I’m just advocating for both Jacai brothers to learn exactly where that line is and just go as close to it as possible without crossing over. And that’s something they can learn from the Brennan Gallaghers of the world. Then I I you know even Brad Marshian Brad Marshian could be I I hate to say it he could be a role model for them. Uh, so I don’t think it it’s, you know, I don’t think it the the fact that they take so many penalties is really going to be what prevents them from being successful. And so I think for me, if Owen Beck is to stay in Lval, let’s say they sign Christians for another year or two, Owen Beck stays in Laval, the most likely person coming up is uh, didn’t get mentioned actually. I think the most likely person coming up is Ryan Bcker next year. He’s probably at the top of that list. the second they can’t. And after that, I actually don’t think it’s gonna be Logan Mayu because I think that Logan Mayu is gonna get packaged in a trade this off seasonason. It’s just a feeling that I’m getting. Um, and you know, I might be wrong, but I really do think so. Uh, Kaden Primo, I got another question about Kaden Primo. Let me uh bring it up. It is our good friend Randy Hansen with the Rocket playing lights out with Jacob Fowler in net. Would you qualify Primo to trade him? Let Primo walk completely trade Primo’s rights at the draft. I select the first reason. The reason being is that he’s still a very effective Laval goalender. Just because there might not be a place for him at the NHL level does not mean they should not keep him until they have another option up the pipelines because we want Jacob Fowler to progress. But as we know, goalie development curves are a lot longer than um than other players. Uh, and so there’s definitely some time for Jacob Fowler. And I don’t think Ken Primo is necessarily going to be a Montreal Canadian’s goalender, but I think, you know, you you qualify him and then see if somebody wants him, trade him away after that, or, you know, you leave him in Laval. I I don’t think there’s any harm in that, but that’s really what I think they do. All right, so I think I covered all the mailback questions that we got this week. Uh, please let me know if I didn’t. As always, if you want to send us mailback questions, you can email them to us at [email protected]. Uh you can also leave them in the YouTube comments. Oh, yes, and we are running a contest. 2. Oh please don't let any Habs play in Olympics or 4 Nations, and be even more banged up for the second half of the season. Those tournys are good practice but have nothing to do with a cup, so are not really important

  3. I think that Hughes is always asking about other players. I assume that if Thompson was available he would explore the possibility. I trust Hughes to find the right 2C.
