🔴LIVE 🔴New York Yankees VS Oakland Athletics/May 10/ Mlb Season/MLB THE SHOW 25
for pitch coming up. And on the mound now, Oswaldo Beo. What do we have on him? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Trent Gisham leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] just missed. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Gets a piece and stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up on the ground right side and foul ball. The wine, the kick, and the one-two and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Aaron Judge at the plate. He’s got the power, but great contact skills. One of the best contact hitters in the game. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. You know, Boo Judge is one of those guys that leaves his mark on everything he does. Yes, he’s great at baseball, but he’s also known for working with charities and in his community. He’s a special human. No doubt about that. Gets the call. That’s strike one. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul out of play. Here’s a one-two strike three and that’s two in a row. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone. And then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early. And a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. outside with a breaking ball. Swing and a ball ripped right field. That one back and that one is gone. his ninth homer of the year and that gives him a lead. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Power versus power right there. Like two locomotives colliding. Who’s going to win? Well, a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working. powers that fast ball out of here. Here is Goldmid and first offering is fouled off. Bounced to the right side. Urenas on the run. Throw to first and they get the out. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. And towing the slab, Luke Weaver. Chris, what should we keep an eye on here with him? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. That’s the third jump throw on the money. Nice play. Batting second, left fielder Tyler Sodrom. Now the left fielder, Tyler Sodstrom. And a strike in there. Let’s go, Tyler. Just missed. One. Next offering is downstairs. Fast ball for a strike. And that skips in the dirt. Cut on and miss. Struck him out and there’s two away. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Two down, base is empty. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. Pitch misses there. Ball one. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s [Applause] inside. Next offering in there for a strike. And that’s strike two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Two outs. Got him swinging. And one, two, three go the A’s. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Stepping in, Jason Dominguez. Dominguez. Beo back to work. In there at the knees. It’s 0 and one. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. And I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. And a pitch and a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. [Applause] Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees outside low. One and0. And another ball. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Fouls one off. Two and two. Stays alive. And it remains two and two. And they’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Well, having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle. And that one is lifted in the air. And there are two down. Batting seventh catcher number. And here’s the catcher JCA. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That one fouled off. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensure safety for the fans. Last thing as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. That one down the line. And that’s just foul. And now one and two. Bouncer to second. Urias. slings to first. Third out and that ends the frame. Yanks held in check, but they’re on top one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. First pitch misses. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide. He can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. Here’s a two-1. That’s to third. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still able to fire over and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. fifth center JJ Blade. This is JJ Bladeet taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And the strike looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Fouled off to the right in the dirt now. One and two. chases that one out of the zone and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Off to a strong start, Singy as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. And first offering is fouled off. And that one fouled off. Ball one low. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think it froze him. Two down. Doan fights that one away. Still one and two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That’s a ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And down on strikes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. And we’re back. New inning getting started. And here’s the first baseman, Oswaldo Cabrera. Let’s go to baby. Shot back to the mouth and he gloves it. Throws to first in time. Lead off man retired here in the third. Boss and stepping in for the Yankees. Jorby Boss. BB Boss in his rookie season hitting ninth in today’s lineup. And he was born in Venezuela. First offering and it just misses. Fought off foul. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay in there safely. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing. Nice balance and weight transfer. And he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Now it’s Trent Gisham to the plate. went down on strikes his first time through. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Gisham, first round pick of the Brewers in 2015. One away with a runner at third. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That one hammered but pulled foul. Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. One ball, two strikes. Sit him down. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Outside low. And that’s ball two. Two and two. And the slider just misses. Really good take especially with two strikes. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. And a 3-2 ground ball right side and it goes just fouled and ball for two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Runners at the corners here. One away. And next for New York, Aaron Judge. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Judge rips that one and that’s a foul ball. the 01. That’s a base hit. Run scores. Picks himself up an RBI. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees. He’s already homerred here in this one. That one’s in there. Go and one. There’s the strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. [Applause] Up and in. And it’s one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Two on, one out. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. And Duhar makes the catch and there’s two down. Goldie steps into the box. 0 for one so far. That one missed. Hit in the air right field. And that one way back there and that is way gone. [Music] And they add on. It’s five zip. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched, taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Base is empty with two away. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jason Dominguez and there’s a rocket into the outfield. Makes the turn and heads for second and that’s a double. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. And here comes Mark Kat as he’s ready to make a change and go to the bullpen. Oswaldo Beido gives way and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. on the mound now, Tyler Ferguson. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So, runner at second, two down. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. Bats in there and it’s 0 and one. Well, it might be a night game, but it’s pretty hot out there and I don’t have to tell you partner, you’re sweating pretty good over there. Makes this long inning that he’s grinding through out there a little extra taxing man at second and that catches the low inside corner. Good fast. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. swings through it and that’s a strike [Applause] out. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler. And the first offering is not close. and delivers outside. Swinging a miss and it’s two and one. Two balls, one strike. to go, baby. Let’s go. Base hit. That was smoked through the infield. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. Luis Rias stands in now and watches strike one. A little out front there as he swings through it. [Music] Owen Chu now maybe a two ball five. The throw to second is offline. He beats the throw. A tough play and now there are runners at first and second. First and second, no outs. Curts getting ready to hit. And there’s a foul ball. Butler the lead runner at second. Urias at first with no outs. That’s off the mark. And that is ball one. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close 02 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. Come on. One and two here. Lifted in the air right field. Judge has it sized up. Squeezes it. Runner tags at second. Throw cut off to third and it comes in too late. He’s up to third on the fly out with one away. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. So the batting order turns over. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. Grounded out. His first time up. [Applause] just missed. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Cut on and miss. Good change up right there. And it’s one and one. Ruers at the corners. One away here in the last half of the third. And a swing and a miss there. Well, in this situation with a runner on first, less than two outs, some say, “Hey, get the ground ball double play with two strikes.” Some people say, “Get the strike out.” I think you just execute your pitch. Make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it’s going to be. Hit in the air center field. Gisham sizing this one up. Drops into the glove. Runner tags from third. He’s in on the sack fly. It’s 5-1. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. [Applause] Now, here is Tyler Soderstrom. He was a strikeout victim his first time. [Applause] And there at the knees. 0 and one. 01. Foul ball. Next pitch is outside. battling here as he fouls it away. BS it off. Still one and two. Two outs. And that’s outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. And down on strikes he goes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. One run, one hit, one error, and one left. Three innings complete. It’s the Yankees five and the A’s won as we go to the top of the fourth. And now the catcher comes up to him, JC Escara. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Yankees doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. So digging in Oswaldo Cabrera. He’s 0 for one. And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Liner base hit. Now batting second. Now it’s the second baseman Jor beat Boss one for one. He tripled in his first trip. Swinging a foul straight back. in the air right field. Butler makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting center fielder Trent Gisham. Back to the top of the Yankee order. So the batter now will be Trent Gisham. He is struck out and he is walked in the first pitch. Misses for ball one. Cabrera off of first with two away. Next offering is fouled back. The one-1. Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Leay sizes this one up. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. The Yanks leave one. They’re up 5-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Stepping in the long ball threat, Brent [Music] Rooker. Let’s go green, baby. Let’s go. And takes low for ball one. You know, these A’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Got him looking. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luke Weaver done for the night. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Tim Hill taking over on the mound. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And there’s the strike. Action in the pen down there. Fernando Cruz getting loose out there for Aaron Boone. Yarro a left-hander also throwing. swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Let’s go. Bring them home. One down. Base is empty. That one close. Rule the ball. Now one and two. way high. Line drive rift down the left side towards the left field corner around first and hustling for second. The throw in and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. That can be a dangerous pitch if you don’t get it inside enough because as a hitter, you see it coming across the plate the whole way. No problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. JJ Blade up next for the A’s. His first at bat was a strikeout. Right through there for a strike. One out and a runner at second. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Foul ball there. Man at second. Grab ball up the middle. Throws to first in time. Now batting third base. So two down now and here is Miguel Anduhar struck out looking his first time. Swang and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. In comes the run from third to trim the lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s 52 at the play. Lawrence Butler singled and scored his first time. Just missed. Yankees up by three. that catches the top part of the zone and a count even one and one on the ground right side. Handles, throws to first. That’s the third out. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 52. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Now it’s Aaron Judge up to the plate. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. Ferguson back to work. Strike on the outside. It’s 0 and one. The Athletics have some bullpen action. JP Sears appears to be getting loose. Alvarado also getting ready. and ball one. Well, in terms of hitting rocket home runs, Judge is near the top of that list. Only John Carlos Stanton has hit more with greater exit velocity than Judge. Look out though, show is quickly climbing those charts. Next offering is outside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. He was all over that one. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now the third baseman, Ben Rice, he’s already homered in this game. That’s in there. Go and one. Nobody out. Runner at first. Pitch misses. One ball, one strike. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Pop dump. Sodrom in and to his right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting the designated hitter, Paul Goldmith. Paul Goldmid will climb in. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. Man at first. One away. Just missed. Baby, let’s go. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. And that’s in the dirt. Foul ball. Another 22 upcoming. Little early on that fast. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an offspe pitch on this next one. outside low and the count is filled up. Judge the runner at first with one gone in the inning. [Music] And a pop off right side foul territory. And there’s two down. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jason Dominguez. One for two. Ball one there. That one a little bit high and the count is 2 and 0. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. He had a foul ball. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. One left for the Yankees. They’re still out in front. 5-2. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the second baseman, Luis Rias. That one’s in there. And that is strike one. You know, these athletics just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Oh, great grab on the dive to first. Pretty nice play there. Nice diving stop right there. He gets the out. Great reactions. Excellent job of finishing the play with a nice easy throw. Nick Curts the next to hit fly to right his first time and a foul ball. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. Breaking ball misses down and away. The Yankees leading by three. Last half of inning number five. And that one in the air. Center field. Gisham trying to get there. Carous. Two down. Now batting number five. So the lineup flips over and now the shorts stop Jacob Wilson. And there’s a ball. Just missed. misses outside and that’s ball three. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. swing and a ball lifted left field. Dominguez brings it in for the third out. So they go quietly there. We’re through five. It’s the Yankees five and the A’s two. Now JP Sears on a pitch out of the pin here. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And here is Anthony Vulpi for two in this one. Ripped on the ground to second. to reus to first in time. One up, one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Here’s the catcher, JC Escara. Escara in his rookie season, 29 years old, he joined the team as a free agent. And that one wrapped foul. Let’s go. Go, baby. Let’s go. One down. Base is empty. That’s a strike. And it’s 0 and two. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Next one misses. And the count one and two. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Justin Sterner up and loosening in the pen. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Oswaldo Cabrera stepping in now for the Yankees. Cabrera having a lot more success on the road this season. Let’s go. And the first pitch misses for ball one. That one ripped but foul. That’s the ball. Come on. Swanging a miss. Two and two now. Didn’t recognize off speed. Thought it was fast ball. A little bit out in front. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. So they make short work of him there. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Yankees five and the A’s two. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Fernando Cruz. He last pitched two days ago. Number 63, Fernando Cruz. Tyler Soderstrom now at the plate who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Sodrom [Applause] check swing called strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Mark Lighter Jr. getting loose out there. De Los Santos, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Outside low and now it’s even one and one late that time and it’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. Let’s go. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] Up the middle. It’s through for a hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Wide throw and it gets away. Doesn’t get too far away. So, no one moves up. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker, swings and misses. 0 and one. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you can find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Fast ball is outside. Next pitch is outside. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Two balls, two strikes. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] close but called a ball. Three balls, two strikes. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Well, he didn’t get the call on the mound the pitch before. Felt like he should have had him looking, I think. But, you know, that’s good composure right there. He found a way to come back with another good pitch to get him to swing and miss. [Applause] Langelers in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Swinging a foul straight back. Soderstrom over at first with one away. And that’s downed away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Back-to-back strikeouts. So they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Leay the next to hit takes outside. That one pushed to the left and fouled. upstairs. He swings and fouls one off. The Athletics trailing by three here in the bottom of the sixth. And it remains two and two. On the ground to third. Fair ball. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Now batting. Miguel Anduhar will hit next. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. Just missed. Up the middle into the outfield. base hit. Here comes the throw. Safe at the plate and the run scores all the way from second. And now just a two-run deficit. That’s backto-back singles for him. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Fernando Cruz won’t go any further tonight. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. New arm out of the bullpen, Ryan Yarro. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Lawrence Butler getting ready to hit. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two aboard, two outs. top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Two on, two outs. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall. One runs in. Runner around third. Now a relay to the plate. Head first slide. And he’s safe. All tied again. 55. Oh, that’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Next up for the A’s, Luis Urias. He’s been a great free agent sign that misses the zone and it’s one and0. That clips a corner. Runner at second. Two down. Just missed. The other way. And that’s a fair ball around third. He scores and they have the lead to second. Pulls him off the bag. Big swing of the bat right there to give him the lead. That was clutch. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it. And man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Nick Curts the next to hit. First pitch misses. A’s leading by a run. Next offering is fouled back on the ground and that’s just foul. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. So it’s four runs, five hits, no errors and one left. Seventh inning coming up, it’s the A6 and the Yankees five. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the seventh and stepping in for the Yankees, Jor Boss. Way to go, baby. Let’s go. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Outside low and the count is one and one. Line drive. That’s a base hit. And that puts the tying run on base. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Now here’s Trent Gisham. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. That’s ripped into the outfield. One away. Here comes Aaron Judge. This guy with light tower power. Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three. Double play and the inning is over. Poetry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play. Nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning. Devin Williams into the game and Boo. The offense needs to be ready for the screw ball. It’s not a pitch you see very often, so it’s tough to pick up. And it’s a good one. Devin Williams. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the shortstop, Jacob Wilson. Number five. And first offering is fouled off. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. got him looking and he did not like the call. Well, that’s great execution of the pitch right there and the battery working together. Catcher does a nice job to present that to the umpire and get that call. Third strike. Now the number two hitter Tyler Soderstrom one for three and that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. and that is out of play. the O2 and ball one. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Brooker the next to hit takes ball one. That one misses two and0. That’s a good miss off the inside part of the plate. You’d much rather miss there than out over the plate where this guy can do some real damage. Two down. Nobody on. Fouled off left side. That one fouled off. Two and two. You got this. down to the dirt, swinging a miss. Throw to first in time. So the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him. And that’s that. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Mitch Spence. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Here’s the third baseman, Ben Rice. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going, and he’s looking for more right here. right through there for a strike. Movement in the bullpen. Mason Miller, the closer of the staff, is getting loose to finish this one off. Homeman also throwing looking to get the tying run on base. And that one is downstairs. Okay, that’s ball one. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. And here’s Paul Goldmith. Paul Goldmith. That clips the zone. Strike one. And that drops in for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Going to count one and two. holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next pitch is outside. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. That cutter right there had just enough movement on it to get the swing and miss. It wasn’t a great location by any means. That’s typically a spot that hitters can handle. So, I’d say he fooled him with just enough of that late action. Now, it’s going to be Jason Dominguez pickoff throw and he’s back safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead, be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. and it stays fair. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The tag and he’s safe. It’s 66. Well done. Drives in the run. just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent bat control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. A lot riding on this next atbat now as they look to take the lead at a critical point in this one. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. And that one fouled off. And fouled off. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. That misses. And a count one and two. Sit him down. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Heading for the plate. He’ll score easily around second now. Going for three. The relay throw. He’s in there. Hey, that’s a really big RBI as he snags himself three bases in the process. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Mitch Spence departs and he leaves a runner at third. So, we’ll see how the next pitcher deals with that when we get back. A new arm into the game, the righty Grant Homeman. He’s been so good against lefties. [Applause] One down, runner at third. JC Escara now at the plate. 0 for three in this one. Slashes this one and it could be trouble. Vulpi scores and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just keep that approach simple. And right there, it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. One out, runner at second. Next is switch hitting first baseman Oswaldo Cabrera. Line drive puts it away for the out to second with the throw in. No chance to get back. It’s a double play. So they get three and jump ahead late. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Yankees eight and the Athletic six. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Mark Lighter Jr. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Langelers in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Activity in the bullpen. Brad Martins getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. two-1 and strike two. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. JJ Blade up next for the A’s. fouled off. He was late. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game. Tying run at the plate. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Foul ball still 0 and two. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. Just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. Swinging a foul out of play. The tying run at the plate. Ball one there. Fought off. Foul. right side. Hard hit. Cabrera to second. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but no one left. Through eight full. It’s the Yankees eight and the athletic six. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Elvis Alvarado. Pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Jorby Boss digs in now. Here comes the pitch. There’s the strike. Alvarado, a 6’4 righty, 185 lbs. And he was born in the Dominican Republic. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Trent Gisham getting ready to hit. Tap foul at the plate. Bibbos aboard here at first with nobody out. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as is coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. And ball one to Judge. Oh, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. That one missed in the air left side. Soderstrom puts it away for the just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Rice. Ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Check on the runner and he dives back in safely. a little bit high and the count now two and nothing and that’s through there for a strike. Two balls, one misses off the inside. And that’s ball three. He never moved cuz he never had time to, but that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Next offering is fouled back. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on. Bottom part of the order. 789. Two up in inning number nine. It’s the Yankees eight and the athletic six. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Brad Martins. a chance at his first save of the year. Number 31. So digging in, Lawrence Butler, rightielder Florence Butler. That finds the mark on the inside corner. out towards right center field. Judge makes the catch for the out and there’s one down. Now batting second base. He’s two outs away. Next up for the A’s, Luis Urias. in there for strike one. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That one’s back. Get out of town. It’s his sixth home run of the season. It’s 8-7. He just sent this stadium into a frenzy. They’re going nuts. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time, took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Swing at a ball popped in the air and that is [Applause] fouled. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. And there’s a ball. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Missed inside with the curb. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Next offering is down low. Jacob Wilson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two on the ground right side. It’s in and out of his glove but plenty of time to recover and that’s the second out. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. The Athletics down to their last out. Next to hit, Jacob Wilson went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two outs and that misses and it’s one and one. And that is out of play. One strike away. Curve in the D. [Applause] a onerun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. [Applause] Got him. And that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. And a final 8-7 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
