Mike Tomlin Media Availability (May 10) | Pittsburgh Steelers

man, really excited about the work that’s going on this weekend and really, you know, focused in a lot of areas. We got some onfield work and development of skill relative to the positions that they play, but it’s also just a introductory to the organization. Um, we had a rookie dinner last night. We we we gave them a tour of the Steeler Museum at the stadium, for example. So there’s an education going on on a lot of fronts and it’s fun to get to know the guys and how they learn um their talents, how their body works, how they take in information, how they communicate. Um but obviously um we’re at ground zero, but it’s a it’s a great opportunity to get better on days like today. Um and they’ve been really engaged and so uh the process has been fun. I’ll pause and open up for questions. Mike, when you bring a young quarterback into this setting, is there anything specific you’re looking for? You know, huddle command and communication, the ability to regurgitate new information, and by new information, I mean information that’s new to them. And so, I don’t want to underscore how difficult it is to receive some of the verbiage from a play caller and have to regurgitate it uh to 10 others that are waiting for it. And so, you know, some elementary things, but important things nonetheless. Um, the giving and receiving of information is a central component of leadership at that position. How would those things? I’m sorry. How would you assess how Will did with those things? He’s doing great. Um, but again, we’re at the very beginning of it. I don’t know that we’re looking at it through that lens in terms of evaluating him. It’s more about getting to know him and just laying a good foundation that way. Derek’s got he’s had kind of a unique story since you guys picked him up. How’s he doing? He said yesterday he’s in his element. I agree with him. Um, he feels very comfortable. He’s in his element. He’s got a great relationship with football. He’s learning some of the technical things that we’ll be asking him to do uh here. It’s been a good process. Anyone else? Well, you uh have an undrafted guy. Is it I mean, there’s a reason they went undrafted, but also you’ve had a lot of success with them. Is there something that is a commonality in the guys that make it from that situation? there’s usually an element of their game that’s varsity. Meaning, if you go undrafted, there’s components to your game certainly that need work. Um, but those that make it usually have an element of their game that’s ready and they find ways to lean on that and minimize some of the things or work on some of the things that aren’t. Um, that’s probably the common bond um based on my experience of all the undrafted that that come through the other side. They usually have a trait um and that trait shows up rather consistently. from your perspective, what kind of went into the George trade on Wednesday and how you kind of processing that big move? You know, I’m not going to add any color to it other than what Omar told you guys yesterday. We thought it was best and timely for all parties involved. Really, I’m just focused on the opportunity that is this weekend for the rookies. Anyone else? All right. Thanks, guys. Thank you.

HC Mike Tomlin spoke to the media during Rookie Minicamp on Saturday, May 10th.

  1. Getting rid of Pickens was the best thing they’ve done this offseason! The worst thing for a team is a cancer in the locker room! You build a team with TEAM players that have incredible passion for the game

  2. I've been calling for a change at HC for a while now. I think they went more for character instead of ego and talent this time.
This draft with Mason, hopefully starting, has given me a whole new enthusiasm . I was not even going to watch this season. Now, I can't wait !

  3. I have yet to hear him, our GM or our ownership say what the plan is at QB. I’m convinced there is no plan 🤦🏾‍♂️

  4. I’m honestly ready for the season while everybody mad about gp it took me no time to get over it of course we are going to miss his big plays no doubt about his talent but you have to think about it he wasn’t the best blocker they even took him out on plays we ran he was sometimes lazy but definitely a big play guy we have new beginnings and I can’t wait never know who’s going to step up and that’s the beauty of it this season should be good! Go Steelers !

  5. I’m done listening to anything that comes out of this man’s mouth. He needs to go. He’s ruining the organization. We’ll be 9-8 be middle of the pack with bad draft picks and no playoffs again. Smh

  6. It wasn’t unanimous Tomlin didn’t want to trade him that’s why Omar addressed the media about it first or they would’ve done it together but it is what it is
