EIGHT In A Row! St. Louis Cardinals SWEEP The Nationals—Now Just ONE Game Behind The Cubs!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 win over the Nationals on Sunday, Mother’s Day, as the Redbirds keep things rolling by sweeping the Nats and winning their eighth straight game!

Miles Mikolas once again did all you could ask for, even if he felt like he could see his game extended beyond the 69 pitches that he threw, we explain why it was certainly the right choice by Oliver Marmol to turn to Steven Matz for what ended up being the biggest leverage spot in the game.

The Cardinals offense got some early power swings off against MacKenzie Gore with Nootbaar and Contreras both launching their sixth home runs of the season. It was even more impressive, though, the way the Cards kept at it against Gore and chased him from the game with a key insurance rally in the seventh inning.

Nolan Arenado tacked on a two-run homer of his own in the eighth to allow the Cards to comfortably complete the sweep!

Now, a big series in Philadelphia looms as the Cardinals send their top arms to the mound against the Phillies. Would a series win get the fans to totally buy back into what we’re seeing? Sound off in the comments!

  1. Well, I am glad to eat crow. I did not think we would perform this well on the road. On the other hand, I could not have predicted that Pallante would have by far his best start of the season, or that Fedde would have by far the best start of his entire career. Still, the bats do seem to be coming alive regardless.

  2. i feel like there's 2 reasons for Mikolas performing better
    1) Contract year
    2) Can't prove it, but maybe different battery… (I don't know how Pages and Pozo game preparation is compared to Contreras)

  3. I'm hoping for a 6-4 road trip, but I believe they will end it at 5-4.. Hope I'm wrong. Will they ever give Prieto a shot? Looks like a very good contact hitter that plays average defense.

  4. I think marmol is smart with how hes used mikolas this season with pulling him when hes at 5 and 2 or 5 and 3 instead of trying to push him another inning. With the kind of pitcher mikolas is and the stuff that he has, it's risky to make him go longer and also see the good part of the other teams lineup more often. Normally, I'd try to get the pitcher through 6, but with mikolas I think theres a higher chance he blows up there

  5. Off topic here, but has anyone followed Paul Goldschmidt's renaissance with the Yankees? It's pretty astounding. He has 53 hits already, 20 RBIs, batting .349, .898 OPS. And it is not due to some "Yankee stadium" effect. He is the only player in the league to hit safely in every road game this year. I am glad to see his HOF career continuing.

  6. I've heard this whole offseason that the cards were going to be completely trash. I thought they were a 500 team with the potential to be better. I know the cubs are good, but i dont think they are as good as people think, and I think the cards have a real shot against them. They're playing good now, but if they could get their bullpen to lock in and for Gorman and Walker to at least hit average, they would be a top team.

  7. 6 runs with 3 dongs was really encouraging especially with Gore on the mounds and the great defense the Nationals were playing. Arenado and Lars both robbed of a hit or two

  8. Hell yeah. I'm here for it. I was here for all of the road losses which makes this hot streak that much sweeter.
I was hoping Ollie would pull Mikolas. I envisioned things going downhill had he been left in, but I'm always gun-shy with him.
    Great show.

  9. This team is playing a repeatable brand. If this pitching holds up they will be very tough. Do you see all of the consistent coaching going on. New vibe, dont count us out.

  10. I'm a big Saggese guy. If Gorman can't start hitting bombs, it should be a capital punishment offense for Thomas to be in Triple A. He's a player!

  11. I said that I would watch to see the young players develop, but with the pitching staff they assembled they could lose anywhere between 80 and 100 games according to how the younger pitchers held up. I enjoyed the recent run but lets remember that a lot of good teams have hammered them. So there is a long way to go but I hope I was wrong and they can keep playing this way. But let's be honest, Mikolas isn't going to keep this up. 😏

  12. Sure Walker is only 22, but like Jo Adell is only 26…
    Dylan Carlson is only 26

At some point the organization either fixes him, or put the 2028 trade to the Guardians for cash in the queue

  13. Hate it for whoever is hitting in front of Walker. They wont advance much. We take 2 of 3 from Philly and this team is legit. Im high on Pozo.

  14. I think if we get further into summer and we’re in the mix for the division it’s more likely they do nothing than it is they enter “win at all cost” mode…maybe they move an expiring contract for a middle reliever or something but nothing super crazy

  15. I’m said it earlier in the season and ima say it again. This team is fun to watch. This a team that wins in a lot of ways and proven to fight but I’m still waiting to see what it looks like against better competition. This series is going to be fun.
