This would be bad if he was the highest paid player in the league or something. But invisible third liners like him and petterson that just chip in occasionally shouldnt be judged like this. Use intangibles and stuff like faceoff wins and post-season golf scores instead.
I wonder if his back is still a major issue. He’s skating around similarly to Chris Kreider, mostly just gliding around the ice.

I don’t get how everyone is just throwing out the “he’s injured” excuse. Ya that could definitely be a thing but my main issue is almost everyone has something nagging during the playoffs. Also no one is providing any context, bottom hand, top hand, what has he stopped doing shooting wise? Example scheifele went on a 10 game stretch of not using his bottom hand while gliding, not taking any one timers and ever since this moment he’s been in and out of the face off dot.
Not a surprise. Character wins cups. Matthews is lacking character.
Generational talent though right? Just can’t get up for a have that matters. Not a serious flaw in his game at all.

Not that he was putting up unreal playoff numbers before that… but it was respectable. Last two playoff “runs” he’s been obviously labouring. Which ultimately is now part of his story.
It’s avant garde jazz. You have to look at the goals he’s *not* scoring.
