Truer words never been spoken. Everyone responsible and involved in the shanaplan needs to go. We can keep 1 and see if he works well with another group, but the core 4 together is done.
No shit Sherlock.
We all thought back in 2016 that a Cup window was approaching.
But after the MTL choke it was obvious these guys don’t have it.
“There’s no replacement for Mitch Marner out there for the leafs” “Mitch Marner is going to win a cup somewhere else”. Both of these statements can be true but so can the fact that there is no path to success with Mitch Marner in a leaf uniform for either side. Side note, wasn’t the whole point of moving on from the core 4 to sign multiple mid level players to create more depth and not be so top heavy scoring wise? If so then obviously we shouldn’t be looking for one big signing to replace Mitch, but instead look to better fill out the rest of the forward group top to bottom.
They all got the carrot($) before the race….the end!
And that’s the result of having the core mentored by the likes of Marleau and Thornton.
Two players that could never get it done, and put themselves and what they thought they were worth before the team everywhere they went.
They passed that attitude along to Matthews, Marner, and Willy… Though Willy seems to have it figured out and signed relatively reasonable contracts, he just needs more guys to buy in and bring it like he does
The Leafs have a collection of great players, but they don’t have a collection of players that play great together.
They all to blame, it isn’t one guy. These 4 couldn’t get it done
Kyper is such a dumbass lol…
We arnt just blaming Marner… but he is to blame. just like the rest of them.
Kyper is a pr person for Marner, its insane.
I’ve never been so detached from a Leafs team. They have been completely sheltered, and it’s time to blow up the bubble…finally.
I’ve defended Matthews for years but I can’t anymore. A true captain doesn’t throw his teammates under the bus immediately following another embarrassing season ending loss.
Matthews just doesn’t strike me as someone who is bothered by the annual underachievement in the playoffs.
Just answers questions neutrally and talks about “we’ll get better. We’ll be improving” but nothing changes.
Him and Marner cannot escape that they have zero game 7 goals in their career. If you’re the highest paid players you have to get it done most of the time.
They’re not getting it done *anytime* it’s a winner take all/loser fuck off game
Marner blocking the Rantannen trade before he leaves us for nothing is just so poetic. Was him getting every last penny out of his hometown team really worth the shit he’s been taking ever since? Take 7 million less but be universally loved instead of universally hated. Probably would have played better the whole time too.
I understand why they tried with this group. When they were younger you would hope they would mature and figure it out eventually. It’s been at least a few years they should have moved on from st least one of them.
If they move on from Marner earlier, either it works or they realize it’s still failing. Then they have the option of not locking up Matthews and Willy to big contracts with clauses. They would have had a lot more flexibility to change their course than they even will if Mitch and JT leave now.
Can the solution and pieces they need be guys they already have? Yarnkrok is a bonafide 20 goal man and Robertson is as well if you keep him in the lineup long enough. With marner gone so too are his 20-25 minutes a game. Robby was getting sparingly minutes and was as much out as he was in the lineup.
People need to understand that the mix of the core 4 together doesnt work. That’s ok. They all have the same personalities. Mitch may go to another team with a better mix of leaders/player and might win one today but all of them here will never win. As for the leafs team, the idea of committing so much money to 4 guys cannot work. Why the fuck do you think Avs decided to trade Rantanen? They werent advancing much after winning their cup and they decided they wanted more depth instead of paying Rantanen 12 mill and makar gonna be making huge money soon. It might not have worked out this year for them but they will be a deeper team going forward. Leafs need to be a deeper team with the cap space they will have this summer.
Anyone else that would rather keep Marner and trade Matthews? I know logistically it doesn’t make sense because of their contracts but if that weren’t the case, am I alone in thinking the others would step up (like they have when Matthews has been out for injuries) with Matthews gone?
As much as I hate Kyper, he’s bang on unfortunately. The ideology of management to load up a majority of the salary cap into 3/4/5 players, CLEARLY, has not worked. Will it ever? Maybe one day, somewhere but after 7 years of this now it’s clear that this plan failed, miserably.
Hindsight is 2020 but when you had the opportunity to adjust after losing to Montreal in 2021, or even 2022 to Tampa before NTC’s and extensions came into play. When Dubas was finally ready to adjust, he’s canned – this all lies on Shanny.
Marner is indeed 1/4th of the problem this year but he’s unfortunately the one who will see the consequences. We will never be able to replace Mitch but different decisions **need** to be made this time.
He figured it out in 4 nations. He was the primary on the ot game winner.
Matthew’s gets set up over and over and can’t put the puck in the net in big moments. 4 nations was a bust for him. He had 3 games to get #70 and couldn’t get the job done. 10 years of playoff and big game no shows. He didn’t get it done in junior. I saw him play on a team with McDavid and Mackinon. Matthews was good but overshadowed and Mac scored the OT winner in that one.
Marner is likely gone this year anyway because the leafs have already committed to overpay Matthew’s.
Kyper is such a shill for Marner it’s not even funny. It’s so obvious lol.
Shut the fuck up Kyper.
Marner can be part of a sucesful team, he cannot be the driving force of a sucessful team in the playoffs. This much has been proven. He needs to be insulated by players who bring things to the table he doesn’t; which we don’t haver. End of. Wouldn’t surprise me if he wins a cup on a Florida esque team, where he’s surrounded by grinders, dawgs, and axe murders. It ain’t happeing here.
What a group of idiots. No four players on any team are going to win a Cup without the supporting cast.
I don’t know why anyone listens to the talking heads. They’re all bozos with the dumbest talking points.
I truly don’t think that Marner is the problem with this Leaf team. I thought he gave a respectable effort in game 7, even, maybe more than anyone on the top 2 lines. But I understand that he is one of the few pieces that can be moved right now, and hopefully whatever players they can bring in with the cap space will have chemistry with who remains. I am worried about the reanimated corpse of Auston Matthews, and whether he’ll be able to return to a high level of play. I really think they need to get rid of Rielly, but I also know that won’t happen. The team should mandate that he gets some conditioning in over the summer. I don’t know how many times he got beaten badly on a breakaway during the season, but it’s a lot. I also don’t know why he continually gets away with not hitting anyone.
Signing Tavares was the absolute downfall of this “core” and team. You gave him 11.5M knowing you’d have to pay the 3 stars 10M as well in the near future. You brought in a soft leader with no playoff success himself.
They essentially rushed the rebuild after drafting Matthews. They could’ve missed the playoffs for another year or two and signed Marner for the same 6.9M contract that Nylander had just by being bad for another year or two.
By making the playoffs in Matthews first year, it basically gave everyone this false hope of the future looking bright because these 20 year old kids made the playoffs so imagine what they’ll do in 4-5 years, let’s go ahead and pay them for that potential. That’s where management fucked up
This is the worst part about losing the way we do… the media coverage afterwards. I’m not saying these guys are wrong, i’m just tired man.
All great points
They should take the “C” from Matthews, I’m dead serious. Postgame he’s blaming everyone but himself, even though he completely no showed. He doesn’t lead by example at all. No accountability, no fight. He wasn’t even dejected postgame, he was pretty much just like “oh well.”
Everyone assuming Marner is gone?
This was known after the CLB play in series loss.
– and –
This was confirmed after the MTL series loss and every season thereafter.
MLSE management did nothing. Ran it back.
Shame.
Kypreos is unhinged.
