Well, first and foremost, Jonathan India is back in the lineup. He’s the DH today. He was in the lineup yesterday, initially supposed to be the second baseman, but he was a late scratch with knee soreness. And you heard McQuero talk to Ryan about Jonathan India that it was really more of a knee contusion and they were worried about his lateral movement. That was more the coaching staff than India. And so Q and the coaching staff thought it prudent to hold him out of the game yesterday. That’s all after he was spiked on a late slide from Wilson Contrarus in an attempt to break up a double play. But all’s good with India. Structurally sound in that knee and he’s back in the lineup and the DH. Meanwhile, on the mound, there are two pitchers for the Royals that are headed to Arizona to continue their rehab assignments. Hunter Harvey threw a bullpen a couple of days ago, played catch today. He’s supposed to have a live bullpen session in Arizona tomorrow. Meanwhile, Sam Long, the Royals said, is going to begin a rehab assignment in Arizona tomorrow. He’s been on the IIL since about midappril with left forearm tightness. And well, we’re at the ballpark where Sam Long earned his first career win way back when he was a San Francisco Giant at the beginning of his career. Tonight, it’s the Royals and Giants game one from Oracle Park. And it’s coming up next. Welcome to the Chevy Lightning Rap. Guess the clues to win. First team, you’re up. We are in San Francisco and tonight the Kansas City Royals begin a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. So glad you’re with us along with Steve Stewart and our producer engineer Eric Guthrie. I’m Jake Eisenberg. The Royals won yesterday to salvage the series with the Cardinals. And so they enter today at 26 and 22, fourth place in the American League Central, 5 and a half games back of the first place Tigers. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants are in tied for second place in a jam-packed National League West. The Giants are 28 and 19 and they’ve won three consecutive games. On the mount for the Giants tonight, it’s former Sai Young winner lefty Robbie Ray. He’s in his first full season since having Tommy John surgery in 2023. And this year he’s been very good. A 304 ERA in nine starts. And the Giants are 9 and0 when he pitches. Meanwhile, it’s Bay Area native Chris Pubich for the Royals and he’s been terrific. A 166 ERA in his nine starts. That pitching matchup is presented by IBW Local 124 providing the best opportunities in the electrical field of construction for over a century. Visit ibw124.org. We’re ready for baseball at Oracle Park again. A beautiful night, 65Β° with wind whipping out to center and to right. But well, make no mistake, the marine layer will settle in as the sun goes down in the city. Robbie Ray is ready. Shoulder square toward home plate. First pitch to Jonathan India. A fast ball up and away for ball one. And we are underway from San Francisco. And there’s still a good amount of sunshine on the field. Shadows in a curl across shallow center and toward the right field corner. Here’s the pitch. And India takes down an inn. Two balls, no strikes. But despite the sunshine that’s still present, the stadium lights are on here at Oracle Park. Rain nod to the sign from Sam Huff, his catcher. And now the two- pitch. It’s a change up. Swung out and missed. And the count’s now two and one. So again, India’s back in the lineup after he was scratched yesterday. India is the designated hitter today. Robbie Ray delivers. Basketball popped up. Foul back behind home plate out of play. And the count’s now two and two. Now India overall has had a much better month of May than he did April. He’s hitting .274 this month. Last month he hit just 186. Two balls and two strikes on Jonathan India. Leading off the ball game tonight. Ray kicks and delivers. Fast ball felt straight back into the second level behind home plate. Nice grab by a guy who brought his glove. He’s also wearing a Jordan Hicks jersey. Hicks was in the Giant starting rotation. He was just moved to the bullpen and Hayden Birdong is now in the rotation. He starts tomorrow. Ray delivers and India swings and misses in a back foot slider strike three. So one up, one down for Robbie Ray in the top of the first inning and that brings up Bobby W Jr. Now Bobby is 0 for his last eight. He’s in fact been held hitless in back-to- back games. That’s the just the second time that that’s happened this season. Something that only happened four times all of last year facing the lefty Ray who turns, kicks, and delivers. First pitch knuckle curve bounces in and Huff knocks it down with his glove. That’s ball one. So Sam Huff is the catcher. Fivetime Gold Glover Matt Chapman is over at third. Will Adamis who signed a seven-year contract with the Giants in the offseason. He’s the shorts stop. Tyler Fitzgerald at second. Casey Schmidt plays first. He was activated off the injured list today. The one pitch knuckle curve sliced into left center field. Elliot Ramos darts to his left. It’s past him into left center all the way to the track. W hits the second base back and puts on the brakes there. He’s got a double with one out in the top of the first inning. Now Elliot Ramos took a bad angle to the ball in left center or maybe he thought it was hit a little bit softer than it actually was because he ran in toward the gap and that ball bounced past him. The center fielder Jung Hu Lee had to back him up in deep left center. So Wit snaps his 0 for eight and instead of a single winds up with a double. His major league leading 18th double of the season. Now he’s in scoring position with one out for Vinnie Passentino. Ray from the stretch delivers. First pitch fast ball carved foul third base side into the second level and it’s 0 and one. But like Jonathan India Pascino had also had a much better month of May than he did in April. Now Vinnie’s hitting .292 this month. Couple of doubles, three homers. Ray kicks turns to second and looks whit back to the bag. Now, Vinnie hit just 172 in the month of April. Top of the first inning in San Francisco. Runner on second with only one out. Here’s the pitch. Basketball bounced softly to the right side. Gets past Ray on the mound. No, he backhands it. Flips to first. Schmidt covered and passino’s out. Two gone. Ray lunged at it, darting to his left after falling off the mound to the third base side. It was not an easy play. It moves Whit over to third with two outs. And that brings up Salvador Perez. And by the way, along with Elliot Ramos in right and Jung Hulie in center, Luis Matoss is the right fielder currently standing in the sunshine when the sun sets behind Oracle Park on the third base side. and casts shadows toward the bay. First pitch to Salvi. Bass fouled straight back off the top of the netting and it’s 0 and one. Salvi was two for four yesterday and he might have had a third hit if he wasn’t robbed on a blooper down the left field line. Alec Burlson made a nice catch in the corner. Also stung a ball in his last at bat to right field. Here’s the 01 fast hit in the air left center field. The wind pushes it towards center. Jung hulie right on the line of the shadows makes the catch with his sunglasses on. Salv out and that ends the inning. So the Royals get a one out double in the top of the first but nothing more. No runs. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith corks one in right down the line. It may go crazy folks. So crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the 3-2. A home run by the Wizards. Catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Bottom of the first inning at Oracle Park. Scoreless game. Chris Bubich is on the mound facing right-handed hitting Elliot Ramos. And the first pitch, it’s a fast ball down and in, one ball, no strikes. Abubich makes his 10th start of the season and make no mistake, he has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball to this point. A 166 erra, fifth best in the majors. Here’s the 10 pitch and Ramos takes a fast ball belt tie inner half called strike and it’s one and one. Abubich is coming off six and a third innings of one-run ball against the Astros. That was down at Dyken Park. It tied a careerhigh with nine strikeouts in that game. the 1-1. It’s a slider that bends over the outer half called strike and it’s one and two. Now Bubich also set a new career high with 22 swings and misses in that game against the Astros. The one-two lick foul. First base out of play. Still a ball and two strikes on Elliot Ramos. Was about as hot as it gets. He’s hitting over 400 in his last 19 games. He’s raised his season average up to 293. Ramos hit a leadoff homer for the Giants yesterday. Also had a game-winning single in the eighth. The one-two just low. Two balls, two strikes on Ramos. Bubich went with a change up that time. He toes the third base edge of the rubber. Crossbody set with a glove belt tie. Shoulder squared toward first. The 2-2 up and away. And the count’s full on Ramos. three balls and two strikes for Bubich. His start against the Astros was one of the best starts of his career. Was really his best start since he was last here over two years ago at the beginning of the 2023 season. Bubich delivers and Ramos pops it up first base side foul territory. Pass Quentino ambles back back paddling makes the grab with Michael Massie sliding behind him to get out of the way. Now Pasquantino hauls it in. Ramos is out. One gone in the bottom of the first inning with a little bit of footwork from both Pasquantino and Massie. They’re on the right side of the infield. Mikel Garcia plays third and Bobby Wit Junior’s the shortstop with Salvador Perez catching. Bay Area native Mark Cana in left, Kyle Isbel in center, and Hunter Renfro in right. Wilmer Flores at the plate, right-handed hitter. and the pitch down and in. One ball, no strikes. The best time to face Flores this season is with the bases empty. He leads Major League Baseball with 42 RBI’s this year. Here’s the one pitch. Change up. Swung out and miss. The count’s one and one. Flores has 10 home runs this season. Six of them have been with runners on base. He’s a near 400 hitter with runners on. But again, the bases are empty right now. One out. Bottom of the first. The pitch down and in. Two balls, one strike. So, the last time that Chris Bubich was here in San Francisco was the last time the Royals were here two years ago. In fact, it was the Giants home opening series at the very beginning of April. It was the Royals first road trip in 2023. Here’s the pitch. Flores hits it in the air. Shallow center field. Michael Massie ranges out. Backpedaling. He makes the catch above his blue cap. Flores is out. Two gone. And Bubich in that start against the Giants delivered the best performance of his career. Six shutout innings. He only allowed two hits. He didn’t issue a walk. He struck out nine. It was his breakout performance at the beginning of that season. And you started to wonder what might could be. But 19 days later, Bubich needed Tommy John’s surgery. Jung Hulie at the plate. Left-handed hitter and the pitch just outside ball one. Lee is the only left-handed hitter in manager Bob Melvin’s lineup tonight. This is BL’s second season with the Giants. One ball, no strikes on Lee. Here’s the pitch just outside. had two balls, no strikes. So, Bubich had Tommy John surgery late April of 2023, 19 days after that start here at Oracle Park, not too far from his hometown of Certino, not too far from where he went to high school and college. The two- pitch basketball over the outer edge, a called strike and it’s two and one. Abubich went to Archbishop Midi High School and then it was off to Stanford and the Royals drafted him 40th overall in 2018. The 2-1 down and away. Three balls, one strike on Jung Hu Lee. Abubich returned from his Tommy John surgery rehab in July of last year pitching out of the bullpen and he was brilliant. Now he’s back in the rotation and he’s been even better. The 3-1 pitch. Lee dribbles at foul first base side and the counts fold. Three balls, two strikes. Now Lee was also limited due to injury last year. Only played 37 games in what was his first major league season. He had a dislocated left shoulder early in the spring and missed the rest of the year. Payoff pitch to Lee. Popped up foul. Third base side out of play and the count stays full. Three balls, two strikes. Mali was a star in the KBO, seven years in Korea before signing with the Giants before the start of last season. He signed a six-year deal. And so this is year two for Jung Hu Lee. Another payoff pitch. Hit on the ground to the right side. Michael Massie scoops it up. Steps and throws to first in time for the out. Inning over. It’s a one, two, three inning for Chris Bubich in the bottom of the first. No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base. We head for the second in San Francisco. Royals moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. It may go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run. Royals and Giants are scoreless through one and the pitch. It’s a fast ball over the outside corner called strike one. 91 mph fast from Robbie Ray. Few ticks lower than what he once was early on in his career. 12th big league season for Ray. The pitch. Garcia takes down and in. And the count’s now one and one. He was drafted by the Nationals in 2010. A 12th round pick. Wound up making his big league debut with the Tigers four years later. Then traded to the Diamondbacks. He was in Arizona for 6 years. traded to the Blue Jays in 2020 and then was the Sai Young winner in 2021 with the Blue Jays. Here’s the pitch. Garcia takes a change up over the inner edge. A called strike and the count’s now one and two. And after that big year with the Blue Jays, Robbie Ray signed with the Seattle Mariners. But his second year in Seattle, he only made one start. Here’s the pitch. Garcia punches a foul out of playoff to the right. Still one and two. That’s because Robbie Ray, like Chris Bubich, had Tommy John surgery in 2023. In fact, Bubich and Ray, underwent Tommy John surgery five days apart that year. Here comes the one-two to Mikel Garcia. Change up down and in. And it’s two and two. Now, Ray, like Bubich, came back last year, but came back as a starter. Made seven starts, but that was with the Giants. He had been traded to the Giants in the midst of his rehab. Now this is year two with the Giants and his first full season after Tommy John the pitch. Garcia taps it foul behind home plate. Still two balls, two strikes. And Ray this season has been excellent. A 304 ERA in nine starts entering the night. He’s reeled off four consecutive quality starts and he has five total this season. Still two and two on Garcia who’s seen six pitches. Ray delivers again. Basketball swung out and missed. Strike three. Ray went with a high heat and Garcia chased it. So, two strikeouts for Robbie Ray brings up Marenna. We pause 10 seconds for Station ID on the Royals baseball network. This is the allnew 965 The Fan, your new home for Royals baseball. AFNC FM and AA HD1 and HD2 Kansas City in Odyssey Sports Station. Top of the second, base is empty, one out. First pitch to Mark Kenna. Basketball up and away. Ball one. Thanks for hanging out with us tonight and staying up late with us tonight with Steve Stewart and our producer engineer Eric Guthrie. I’m Jake Eisenberg. Marana gets the start tonight with the Royals facing a lefty. Can’s been great against left-handed pitching this season. Nine for 26. It’s good enough for a 346 average against lefties. Ray winds and fires. Pass ball catches the upper outside corner called strike. And now it’s one and one on can. He’s a Bay Area guy. Grew up in San Jose. Went to Bellerine Prep for high school and then it was off to Cal where he played collegiately. The pitch knuckle curve over the low inside corner called strike. The count’s now one and two. Hannah was a seventh round pick by the Marlins back in 2010 at a cow. Same draft year as Robbie Ray. Here’s the pitch. Basketball high and the count’s now two and two. Ais also spent a good amount of his baseball career in the Bay Area. His first seven seasons as a big leager were with the Oakland Athletics. And last year he finished the year with the Giants after the Tigers traded it. The pitch knuckle curve tapped down the third baseline. Chapman charges bare hand pickup. It pops out of his fingers. No throw. And Can is safe at first. He’s got an infield hit. That is what you call a swinging bunt. So Kenna has his 10th hit of the year against a lefty. He’ll take it. Runner on first with one out for left-handed hitting Michael Massie. Yeah, Chapman couldn’t have been playing any deeper. He had a long way to try to come and get that ball. Well, he certainly knows Marata very well as two teammates in Oakland forever. First pitch to Massie. Basketball letter high called strike and it’s 0 and one. And not only were Cana and Chapman teammates in Oakland, but Bob Melvin was their manager in Oakland. He’s now the manager of the Giants. his second season. Here’s the 01 pitch. Massie lofts it into left center field. Lee sprints to his right into the gap, makes the catch above his cap and Massiey’s out. Two gone. That brings up Hunter Renfro who’s starting his second consecutive game. He was one for four with a double yesterday. Also scored what was the game tying run at the time in the fourth inning. And so the results have been better and better. He’s hit safely in four consecutive starts. Here’s the pitch. Refro takes a change up for a strike and it’s 0 and one. All told, last four games. Refro has four hits in his last 14 at bats. That includes a double. still looking for his first homer of the year though and the 01 rolled foul third base side it’s 0 and2 and this is similar for Renfro to what it was last year and last year around this time similar sample size Renfro through his first 103 plate appearances last year hit 179 this year through his first 117 plate appearances he’s hitting 140 here’s the O2 two. Refro chops it toward third. Chapman backhands, shuffles and throws to first in time for the out inning overr. So for the second straight inning, the Royals get a one out hit, but nothing more. In the second, it’s an infield. It’s a great night for baseball. This matchup features some of the best talent in the game. A lot of power, a lot of marquee names. Here we go. Buckle up, folks. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. Matt Chapman leads off. Then Willie Adamus, then Casey Schmidt. Three straight right-handed hitters against lefty Chris Bubich. He needed 18 pitches in a one, two, three bottom of the first. Slightly open stance from the right side for Chapman. Now in his second season as a member of the Giants, Bubich delivers. First pitch fast ball inside. One ball, no strikes. Now Chapman signed with the Giants last year, signed a three-year deal and then played so well that he wound up signing a six-year extension at the tail end of last season. A one pitch change up popped up third base side foul ground. Garcia hustles over the coach’s box and right on the chalk of the coach’s box, he makes the catch. And Chapman’s out, one away. So four up, four down for Bubich. And now he faces the Giants newest addition, shortstop Willie Adamis, who after four years with the Brewers, signed a seven-year deal with the Giants this past off season. So Adamus is now with his third team. He started his career with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018. Overlapped with both Matt Petrero and Paul Hoover when he was with the Rays. Here’s the pitch. Fast ball high and that’s ball one. Now had a career year last year with the Brewers. Off to a bit of a slower start this season. He’s hitting just 223 to start the year, but he does have five home runs. Here’s the 10 pitch. Bounce straight back into the netting and the count’s now one and one. So you look out over the crowd and you see a handful of Willie Adamus number two jerseys, the newest edition for the team store here in San Francisco. The 1-1 basketball over the low outside corner called strike and it’s one and two. Giants tonight are in their usual cream colored jerseys. Cream tops, cream bottoms. Black and orange stripe down the side of each leg. Bubich delivers. And it’s a change up down and away. Two balls, two strikes. Giants in block, black letters outlined in orange across the chest. Same with the big number on the back and the name plate as well. The two- two. It’s over the outside edge called strike three. A big bending sweeper gets Adamus looking. Bubic has his first strike out of the game. And with that strikeout by Chris and every Royal strikeout this season, Sunlife Financial and the Royals Foundation will donate to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Brings up Casey Schmidt, who was activated off the injured list today. Closed stance from the right side and the pitch. Fast laced to straightaway center field. Isbel doesn’t have to move. He just waits for gravity and makes the catch. Inning over. A one, two, three. Bottom of the second for Bubich. He’s gone six up, six down so far. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an oppo taco. Let’s do we get to enjoy one of the most beautiful vistas in all of baseball. And the weather’s supposed to be perfect this week. It is. It’s perfect now and should be the next couple days. And Kyle Isbel leading off against left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray. It’s been a pitcher duel as we expected so far. The first pitch is a fast ball pop back foul out of play by Isbel, the number nine hitter who went two for eight against St. Lewis, he’s hitting 270 on the year. Three homers, three doubles, three triples. Number nine hitter tried to get on to lead off this third inning. The pitch and it’s a breaking ball in the dirt. Skips away from the catcher Sam Huff. Well, his belt played of course the Cardinals over the weekend and he’s always had great numbers against St. Louis better than a 500 hitter against them. Not the same against the Giants. They’ve been tough on him and a little bit of a smaller sample size. One and one on the pitch on the lefty. Fast ball lined the other way. Left field coming in. Ramos will play it on a hop and Kyle Isel has a leadoff single. The Royals have a hit in each of the first three innings, but this time it’s the leadoff man. That’s the second time tonight that Ramos has not taken the most confident route to the ball. This was a play that he might have been able to make with a diving catch if he wanted to, but he let it land in front of him and it wound up short hopping him a little bit while he was running toward the line. Matt Cotero was talking before the game about how important it is for the guys at the bottom of the lineup to get on to set the table for the top of the order. Here is India up for a second time. Struck out his first time. Shows spun takes it inside for a ball. Yeah, Isbbo came in two for 23 an 087 average against the Giants. But there’s it right there, the third of his career as he’s being held on by Casey Schmidt over at first base. Left-hander kicks and deals and a breaking ball catches the inside corner and it’s a 1-1 count on Jonathan who’s dhing tonight. He went one for eight against the Cardinals after a red hot series against Houston in which he hit almost 500 last week in that series. One and one, no score. Top of the third, the pitch and it’s a fast ball way upstairs. And Bobby Ray looks a little frustrated after that offering as India gets ahead of this pitcher. Two and one. Bobby Wood Jr. waits to hit next. The Royals are four and four against teams when they start a left-handed pitcher. Here’s the 2-1. Runner breaks now stops and it’s a strike and the throw back to first by the catcher is Huff and it’s late. So it’s two and two. So the Royals 4-4 against Lefties. Giants are 4-10 and they’re facing a left-handed starter as they are tonight. So, we’ll see how it plays out. Long way to go. Another night game tomorrow and then an afternoon game on Wednesday, the finale of the series. Izzy leads off first base. Two and two on India from the high set. The lefty deals and the pitch is fouled off by Jonathan who came in at 238. Hits in four of his last five games. He’s been getting on base a lot. That’s his job as a leadoff man. He’s reached 31 times in his last 19 games before this one. Straight up in the outfield. Middle infield. Looks for that double play ball. Two and two. Ray checks the runner now. Throws over there. And Isbell had a very modest lead. Giants do not yet have a base runner tonight. The Royals have had a hit in each of the first three innings, but no runs to show for those hits as of yet. Two balls, two strikes. Now the runner goes. Pitch is bounced. Foul off to the left by Jonathan India. And Isbel will head back to first base. Bobby’s on deck. Giants are off to a good start this year. This is a team that isn’t used to missing the playoffs frequently, but the last three years they have. They won 80 and 82 a year ago. This year they come in in third place in the NLS. Just a game behind the Dodgers. They’re tied with San Diego for second place. Two and two and the pitch and it’s a fast ball high and it’s a full count. The Dodgers are 28 or 29 and 18. Giants are 28 and 19. So, they’ve had a very good start to the year and they’re 16-7 at home. Just as the Royals have been very good at home, we saw the Cardinals over the weekend. They’ve been very good at home as Giants have as well. They swept the Athletics, their former Bay Area rivals over the weekend here. Three and two. Will Izzy go again? He will not. The pitch is inside ball four. So, a single and a walk to get things started to put two men on with nobody down for Bobby Wit Jr. That’s the first walk for Robbie Wright tonight. And he entered the night with the second most walks in all of baseball. Now he’s tied with Shawn Burke of the White Socks for the most walks in baseball with 27. And if you look just past the total number of walks, he entered tonight with the highest walk rate in all of baseball. So, he’s not always had the sharpest command this year, which is interesting when you’re six and0, but he’s uh he’s been able to work around them for the most part. Here’s Bobby. He doubled his first time. First and second, nobody down. First pitch liner caught by the short stop. Double play. Adamus throws to the second baseman Fitzgerald for the force at second. So, it’s a 64 double play. Bobby hit it sharply but just to the right of Adamus who easily played it on the back hand to start that double play as Isbel and Bobby with Jr. erased on one swing. So now two down for Vinnie Pascantino with India at first base. That’s tough for Isbel. You got to freeze on a line drive especially when it’s hit in front of you the way that one was. So let’s see if Vinnie can do something here. Grounded out to the right side his first time. Fast ball is high for a ball to Vinnie Pascantino. So Bobby Jr. hit the ball hard on a line, but it found a glove and it turned into a double play. Then he waits for the 10. The pitch swing and a high fly ball shallow center and it’ll be their center fielder coming in to make the catch. Jung Hu Lee and Vinnie is 0 for two. And the Royals get the first two men on but cannot score to the B. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one in right down the line. It may go crazy folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the score of three to two and a home run by the Wizards. Catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Well, the Royals got the first two men on in the top of the inning, but a line drive double play. A line drive to the shortstop. Adamus and that cut short. The Royals hopes of jumping on top in that frame. Now Bubis is going to try to keep us scoreless here in the bottom against the bottom of the order. Tyler Fitzgerald takes the breaking ball down and in. Right-handed batter, their second baseman. Ball one. Tyler Fitzgerald, Luis Mto, Sam Huff for San Francisco. Oils have three hits. The Giants have not had a base runner yet, but nobody has scored. One and that one just missed inside. Bubich from right down the road. Certino in this area. Now the 2 and a swing in a miss at a change. And it’s two and one on the count. Fitzgerald is out of the University of Louisville. He’s having a good season. He’s hitting .295. Two homers, five doubles, and a triple. Here’s the 2-1 pitch. And a fast ball just missed inside at 92. Tou fell behind two and0. Now he’s behind three and one on Fitzgerald. Straight up defense. Chris ready for the 3-1. And here it comes. And a swing. And that’s a foul tip right into Salvy’s catcher mitt. And it’s a full count now on Fitzgerald. Fourth round pick six years ago by these guys. His third year as a big league player. Three and two. And the pitch and that missed inside and that’s ball four on Fitzgerald. So a leadoff walk here in the third inning. The first San Francisco base runner tonight and it will bring up their right fielder Luis Matoss who’s for his last 14. Chris Bouvic gets his share of ground ball double plays. See what he does here against this right-handed batter. MTO h s h s h s h s h s h s h s h s h s h sitting a buck 61 with three homers, two doubles. First pitch and a curve. Catches the outside corner for a strike. One the count on Luis Moss, native of Venezuela. And the pitch and a swing. Fly ball hit pretty well to center. Isbel going back to the track right in front of the 391 sign. He pulls it down for the first out of the inning. So MTO hit it on the nose but to the right part of the ballpark where Isbell doesn’t have to go very far. This place can fool you a little bit too. If you look at the flags above the scoreboard or even the big American flag in the right center field area. I mean, they are blasting out to center field, but the ball doesn’t necessarily carry just because it’s windy up there. Bubich has had eight grab ball double plays turned behind him this year, by the way. Here’s Sam Huff, their number nine hit a right-handed hitting catcher, taking a breaking ball for a strike. Sam Huff in his four years at Texas, his first year with the Giants. Even though he’s from Scottsdale, Arizona, he grew up a Giants fan and a Buster Posey fan. And here he is catching for the Giants. Here’s the pitch and it misses off the plate. It’s one and one on Sam Huff. And not only that, but Buster Posey is his boss. That’s right. President of baseball operations now. Yeah, he runs the show now here in San Francisco. Runner at first, one out, now pickoff throw, runner back. The early returns on Buster Posi. Again, you judge a guy that runs a baseball operation over a long period generally, but the early returns are pretty favorable, but people seem to be liking the job he’s doing. And obviously, couldn’t be more popular in this town, the Buster Posie. One and one and the pitch and a breaking ball grounded foul up the third base side. Yeah, it’s a good start and that’s even an odd year. That’s right. Yeah, we all know what 10 and 12 and 20 and 14 were like for him and his Giants. Unfortunately, 14 in particular, one and two, and the pitch and a swing and a miss. And there’s the strike out on the fast ball at 93. That’s the second K of the night for Chris Bubich in his pitcher duel trying to work around this leadoff walk. He’s twothirds of the way of getting through this third inning. Back to the top of the quarter. And right-handed inning, Elliot Ramos, who was an all-star a year ago. He popped out foul to Vinnie down the first base line. His first time up. Runner at first is Fitzgerald. Vinnie holding him on. The pitch to Ramos. A fast ball fouled straight back. One thing about this ballpark is it’s very fan friendly and like a lot of new ballparks, not much foul territory down the first base and third base lines. And when Vinnie went to get it, he had Massie right on his heels and Hunter Refro coming over from right field, but he did make the catch in that first inning. Here’s the next pitch and it swung on and miss late on the fast ball and Bubich had 0 and two. Functionally, there used to be even less foul territory back when they had the bullpens. Bullpens were in play here for a long time. 0 and2 on Ramos and the pitch and a swing and a foul out of play. The H is silent in Ramos as Jake has known for years. H E L I O T native of Puerto Rico. Jake when he was calling the Giants double A team in Richmond, Virginia a while back, this was one of the players he called on a nightly basis for a while anyway. Pickoff throw to first runner back. Now, when Elliot was called up to DoubleA Richmond, he was just 19 years old. He was one of the youngest players in franchise history at that point. That’s a that’s a very young uh double A player. 0 and2. Now he’s the ripe old age of 25. Runner goes, pitch is chopped left side. Bubich has it off the mount. Fires to Vinn for the out. And that ends the inning. The leadoff walk does not bother Chris Bubich, at least not outwardly. It’s a great night for baseball. This matchup features some of the best talent in the game. A lot of power, a lot of marquee names. Here we go. Buckle up, folks. There’s a guy who wants to be in spotlight. The bats have stoppers. We’re just playing Powerball. He’s well below his career RA this year. 304 his RA 6 and0 his win loss record. And of course Chris Bubich 4-2 but a 166. And these guys are pitching up to their statistics so far. Here’s Salvi to lead off the fourth against the lefty. First pitch fast pass ball fouled back and out of play. Nice play by a fan down there. Boy, we’ve seen some fan defense tonight. I think it’s the same fan as earlier tonight. Okay, the basically the first row of the second sort of club level here right behind home plate. Here’s the 01 swing and a fast ball fell back to the netting. They ought to get to Kansas City for the Savannah Bananas there this weekend. This weekend because that would be an out. That would be an out in banana ball land. 0 and two on Salvador Perez. Salvi fly to center his first time. No score here in the fourth. Abby Ray kicks and deals and a fast ball’s nine away and it’s one and two. So I guess at home fans have to learn not to catch a foul ball from your home team. Is that how it works? I have no idea. Yeah, that’s funny. It’s zany. It’s fun. I don’t know how it works and it’s very popular because they sell out everywhere they go and we hope you got your tickets for for the bananas in Kansas City. Here’s the one-two and a wave and a miss at the offspe pitch down. Salvi strikes out to start the fourth inning. Our buddy Jeremy Guthrie has been part of that group in uh off and on, not every game, but he has participated as a pitcher in several of those games, which if you know Jeremy at all, shouldn’t surprise you. He’s the ultimate man of the world who’s kind of done everything. I would think he’d be involved this weekend. Why wouldn’t he? Now going from starting game three of the World Series here to pitching in banana ball. Exactly. Here’s Mike El Garcia. He struck out his first time swinging and he’ll take a strike from Robbie Ray. Mike Kel went four for 10 in the St. Louis series. Couple of doubles, couple of walks. Next one down and in. moves his back foot out of the way of that breaking ball. Mike hitting fifth in the order, playing third base. He’s got as many home runs as Bobby Whit Jr. They each have five to this point this season, which is obviously a lower number for Bobby so far and a higher number so far for Mike Kell. And he’ll swing, shoot it through the right side for a base hit, which he did yesterday to drive in what turned out to be the game-winning run between first and second. Opposite field approach. Mikel Garcia came in a 301 hitter and that’ll get him back to 300 with that opposite field one out single and that’ll bring Bay Area native Mark Cana to the plate. And already with an infield hit tonight. Runner at first, one out. Oils have four hits, no runs to show for them. The first pitch is inside for ball. And that’s been a uh a sore point for the Royals of late Jake. We see a lot of three runs on nine hits, three runs on 10 hit kind of ball games this team has been involved in of late. We’ll see how tonight goes. So far, no runs on four hits. Want to know the count now. The pitch and a swing. The ball will hit deep left field. Ramos back and in front of the fence. He’ll make the catch in left field. Oh, Hannah gave it a ride, but just a little shy of hitting it out of here for the second out as Ramos makes the play. And to your point, Sue, you just got to go back to yesterday. Two runs on nine hits. Yeah, that’s how it’s been going. The Royals stranded nine and were two for nine with runners in scoring position. Three runs on nine hits Friday night, no runs on four hits Saturday, three runs on eight hits last week in Houston. And that that’s been kind of a a common theme when especially when you’re not hitting a lot of home runs. There’s a lot of the singles and not getting hits with runners in scoring position. Here’s Massie. He swings and skies it on the right side. Foul territory. The second baseman wants it. And now he’s going to back up. But just before he steps into fair territory, Fitzgerald catches it on the foul side of the line for take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Royals are on the road all week, but they’ll be home next week, beginning with a home stand featuring Cincinnati in the home stand opener on Memorial Day afternoon. Here’s Wilmer Flores swinging at the first pitch of the fourth inning, lining it down the left field line, but foul and hook. Foul off the bat of Flores, their DH with 10 home runs. Jake Mansion, 42 RBI’s. He’s having a great home stand here in his sixth year with the Giants. eight for 23 with three homers on this home stand in which the Giants are 4-2 by the way. Here’s the 01 and a breaking ball and he checks the swing, takes it down and in. They swept the Athletics over the weekend. The Giants did. Of course, they no longer play across the bay. They play in Sacramento and they lost a series against Arizona last week here. So, this is the third team and final team in this home stand for them these three games. There’s a pitch away. Two and one the count. I guess it’s an I80 series now. I guess so. Instead of a Bay Bridge 80, what is it? 80 or so miles, hour and a half drive-ish to Sacramento, depending on traffic. Fly ball the other way, right field over toward the line goes Renfro. He has a play and he’ll make it on the fair side of the line. There’s not much room on the foul side of the line down there, but he made the play right down the right field line. And Flores is 0 for two. And here’s Jung Hulie, who’s hitting .276, six homers, 12 doubles, two triples for this left-handed batter, gets on base, he can steal a base. He’s got three steals on the year. One out, nobody on. Bottom of the fourth, no score. Left-handed batter, lefty Bouage deal swing on a hop by Bobby behind second base. He’ll throw to first for the They had Bobby positioned perfectly just to the left of second base right at the edge of the outfield grass. And you can credit infield coach Jose Algusil for that positioning. Agie’s back in a familiar place. He was a long time coach in both the majors and the minors with the Giants organization. No doubt this is a homecoming for Jose. He was a coach for Bruce Bochi for many years here. Here’s Matt Chapman, their third baseman. He popped out fouled to third his first time. And he takes a pitch away from Chris Bubich pitching near his hometown and family and friends here watching him. Said he didn’t get to see his mother on Mother’s Day a couple weeks ago, but he knew he’d be coming here soon. Get a chance to see her and others. Here’s the 10. And it’s upstairs and it’s 2 and 0. We saw his mom in Milwaukee when he pitched there and pitched so well the beginning of the year. Two and0 the count on Matt Chapman. Second year with the Giants, eight homers and the pitch and a swing and a miss. And I’m out in front on that off speed offering. Chapman has hit Bubich well in his career. Five out of 10 now with a double and a homer, but 0 for one tonight. 2-1 and it’s down and in. Three and one the count on Chapman. Two out, nobody on. Bottom of the fourth. 04 and0 for the Royals. Zero’s across for San Francisco. Their one base runner was Fitzgerald drawing a leadoff walk in the third inning. Three and one. Chris comes now delivers. And did the batter go? It’s a strike. Three and two. Chris is at 52 pitches as he works here in the fourth inning as we’re always trying to get this road trip off to a winning start in a tough place to win for a visitor. 3-2 swing and a miss. He strikes him out off speed. Third strike out for Chris Bubich in a one two three fourth. We go to the fifth. No score. Missouri baseball fans turn. The Royals and Giants are scoreless. We start the top of the fifth. Left-hander Robbie Ray has thrown 53 pitches. And now the first one home to Refro. It’s his knuckle curve. Little bit low. Ball one. It’s a beautiful ballpark here in San Francisco. Oracle Park opened with a different name in the year 2000. It’s had a couple of different names, but now it’s Oracle Park. The 10 pitch. Renfro waves and misses a change up and it’s one and one. Great features that have become a part of the classic imagination of baseball over the last couple of decades. Well, being in a handful of World Series, he’ll certainly do that. The one-1 pitch, Renfro waves and misses. And another change up, one and two. Out in left field, you’ve got the giant Coca-Cola bottle, which is actually two slides. It’s the guzzler and the twist off. These two slides inside that Coke bottle. And you have you done both slides or just one of the slides? Oh, I’ve done both slides. Both. Yeah. I preferred the guzzler. You did? Yeah. And I did clear the height requirement for both. was important. Here comes the one two to Refro over the high outside corner called strike three. Refro’s down looking on a slider and he stares back at home plate umpire Dan Merzel. Refro can’t believe it. There’s the first down in the fifth and that brings up Kyle Lisbel. And just to the right of the Coca-Cola bottle, you’ve got the big glove sculpture, the four-fingered glove sculpture, modeled after a 1927 oldtimey baseball glove. Used to imagine somebody trying to hit it into that glove. First pitch to Isbel. Hit on the ground. Weekly back on the middle. Second baseman Fitzgerald charges. Scoops, throws to first in time for the out. Two gone. That’s hard to do though. It’s 501 ft away from home plate. No one’s ever hit it into the glove. But what people have done here is hit a baseball into McCubby Cove. The water just behind the right field fence, 309 ft down the right field line. A 20T4 a 24 foot high wall in honor of the late great Willie Mays, the Seah. First pitch to India in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. And they’ve got a splash hit counter on the right field fence. The Giants have hit 106 home runs into McCubby Cove. 35 of them by Barry Bonds to no one’s surprise. The pitch Andy rolls it foul third base side and it’s 0 and2. Now there have been 61 home runs hit into McCubby Cove by opponents, but it has never been done by a Royal. Not like there have been all that many opportunities. Royals are only playing in their 12th regular season game here. Ray delivers a fast ball up and away. One ball, no strikes. So, here’s the trivia question. With two strikes and two outs, there are three players that have been Royals and then gone on to hit a home run into McCubby Cove with a different team. The pitch rolled foul behind the plate. One and two. Who are they? Three players that were once Royals and then later in their careers hit a home run into McCovby Cove. How about Carlos Beltron? Ding ding ding. You got one. He did it as a giant in 2011. Here’s the pitch. It’s low. Two balls, two strikes. I’ll give you a hint for the other two. They were both at Kaufman Stadium this past weekend to celebrate the 2015 World Series team. Ray shakes off a sign now. Nods and now the two to India. Lined into left center field. Lee sprints back, reaches up, slides, and falls backward. He makes the catch. And India is out to end the inning. It’s a one, two, three inning for Robbie Ray. All right, quickly take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer. We all did. Ball one. Bubich has only allowed one base runner. That was a leadoff walk in the third. He’s struck out three. He’s gotten three foul popups now. The one pitch. Sweeper taken for a strike. And it’s one and one. He’s also got an a line out, a popup, and a few ground balls. But he is not allowed to run and he is not allowed to hit. Here’s the pitch just outside. Two balls in a strike on Casey Schmidt. And Stu was telling you how Chris didn’t get a chance to see his mom for Mother’s Day, but of course now gets to. Chris grew up in the Bay Area and his mom Yella and she’s here tonight. The 2-1 skips in. Three balls in a strike. Have you heard Chris’s new nickname? Newish nickname. Not the Croatian sensation. Oh, okay. I like that. You might remember during players weekend last year, Chris had the Croatian flag on his cleats to celebrate his Croatian heritage. The 3-1 little bit high. And that’s ball four. So, Bubich issues his second walk of the night. Schmidz on it first with one out for Tyler Fitzgerald. So, Chris’s dad was born and raised in Croatia, then came to the United States at the age of 18. His mom, Yella, was born in the Bay Area, but her parents were born and raised in Croatia. They came to the United States in the 60s. Chris has been there once. He visited when he was 5 years old. His grandma’s farmhouse out there. First pitch to Fitzgerald is swung out and missed. And it’s 0 and one. Here’s the pitch. Fitzgerald swings and misses and it’s 0 and2. Now Chris’s grandparents also now live in the Bay Area. These are his mom’s parents. Lucy, his grandmother, and his grandfather Vanimir, who everyone just calls ZK. And Chris was saying they tune in to every single game. They’ll they’re here tonight in all likelihood. Probably not tuning in. Unless maybe they are from their seats. 02 to Fitzgerald. Rolled up the third base line. Hugs the chalk and moves foul. 0 and2 on Fitzgerald. But Chris remembers his grandparents taking him to little league games in the Bay Area and his mom always there to support him, too. And so Chris really enjoys celebrating his Croatian heritage. He’s hoping to get more involved with Croatian baseball, too. There’s a handful of other major leaguers with Croatian backgrounds. The pitch rolled back to the mound. Bubich picks it up, looks at second, double clutches, instead throws to first and gets the sure out. He retires Fitzgerald to gone. Now, Bubich had a little trouble getting the ball out of his glove. If he had gotten it out cleanly, he was clearly thinking about trying to start the double play. Fitzgerald didn’t hit it all that hard though. So Schmidt moves to second. Fitzgerald’s out. Two gone in the fifth. And Luis Mtos is at the plate. A right-handed hitter. Now there is another Royal who is a Bay Area native and also has Croatian heritage. And well, if things go well, we’ll see him later tonight on the mound maybe. First pitch to Matoss over the outer edges strike and it’s 0 and one. That would be Lucas Ers who also has some Croatian heritage. Urs did throw 26 pitches yesterday and earned his first win as a Royal. Here’s the 01 sweeper over the low outside corner called strike and it’s 0 and2 on Luis Moss. He calls time and steps out. Runner on second. Two gone. Bottom of the fifth. Casey Schmidt is the first Giant to reach second base tonight against Kubic. He’s looking as sharp as he was when he started here two years ago. The O2 missed it toward first pass gets it on the back. He gets to his feet, touches first for the out. Inning over. A terrific defensive play from Vinnie Pasquentino at first and Chris Bubich. The sixth inning is our sonic slam inning. Our contestant is Summer Semler from Blue Springs, Missouri. If the Royals hit a home run out of the park in this inning, Summer wins $1,400. If the Royals hit a grand slam out of the park in this inning, Summer wins 25 grand from Sonic and the Kansas City Royals. Bobby W Jr. leads off the Sonic slam inning. He has doubled and lined into a double play facing Robbie Ray here in the sixth. No score. First pitch swing and a slice or foul out of play down the right side here at Oracle Park in San Francisco with the lights on. Not a cloud in the sky. Gorgeous cool evening. And the 01 swing and another slicer foul out of play down the right side. It was 65 when we started. It’s 60 right now. 0 and2 on Bobby who’s broken 0 for8 with that double in the first inning and he’s one for two tonight two for 12 in the Cardinal series 0 and2 count 62 lefty Robbie Ray kicks and delivers and a fast ball’s high it’s one and two Bobby is going to be breaking out very soon he’s been a little quiet offensively of late he went three out of 11 in Houston, two out of 12 against the Cardinals, but he usually doesn’t stay down very long. And the one two and a breaking ball granted sharply to second right at Fitzgerald. He’ll throw him out. Little low throw, but Smith handles it at first and Bobby is one out of three. And the batter will be Vinnie Pasant Tina who made a great play at first base to end that fifth inning diving to stop a ball off the bat of Luis Moss and get to first base for the final out. No score in this pitcher duel. Top of the sixth inning. Then he passino 0 for two tonight. A ground out and a fly out. Facing the lefty here. Ray delivers and a fast ball is fouled out of play off to the left. Like a lot of Royals, Vinnie had never faced Robbie Ray before tonight. 0 and one infield shaded a little bit around to the right. Infield plays him to hit the other way in the 01. And a swing and a liner into right center. A base hit for Venny Pasquantino with one down. Right now we pause for station identification on the Royals baseball network. Hey, it’s Cole Rigggins and this is 965 the fan, your home for Royals baseball. KFNC FM and AM HD1 and HD2 Kansas City at Odyssey Sports Station. Salvador Perez stands in 0 for two tonight with a strike out and a fly out. Runner at first, one out. The Royals have five hits now, but no runs as of yet. Vinnie leads from first with one down on the pitch. Salvi takes the fast ball high for a ball. Four singles and one double. Bobby Whit with a double in the first inning. He got as far as third base in that inning. The only Royal to do so tonight so far. Then he leads from first with Casey Schmidt holding him on. One and0. Now the pitch and a wave and a miss. Good breaking ball. Really fooled Salvi there. Infield shading a little bit around to the left. Third baseman Chapman, as you’d imagine, is deep and not far off the line at third base. Straight out and deep in the outfield. One and one on Salvador and the pitch and a swing and a popper. Right side foul ground. Casey Schmidt going over. Looks like he has a play in front of the Royal St. He dropped it. Boy, the ball had all kinds of spin on it. He started backpedaling and he could not secure it into his glove. And Salvi lives to see another pitch. You just hope this is one of those situations where that crack in the door leads to an even louder crack from the bat. So Casey Smith just off the injured list today. Couldn’t make the play. So Salvi gets another chance now. One ball, two strikes on him. The runner at first and one out. Robbie Ray from the high set. Now the one-two pitch and a swing and a foul out of play off to the right. That side of the stadium get a lot of foul balls the last 10 minutes or so. Schmidt was charged with an error on that missed pop foul. That’s an E3. One and two of Salvador Perez. Benny leaves from first and the pitch and a swing and a foul back. It was down and in on Salvi Robbie Ray’s pitch count at 75. Very manageable pitch count both him and for Chris Bouvich is it’s been the pitcher duel that a lot of folks would have expected coming to the ballpark tonight. Two very talented lefties. One and two and the pitch and a swing and a miss. He tried to hold up on a fast ball up but he went around that struck number five on the night for Robbie Ray. So a pop foul at least with Salvador Perez didn’t hurt him. He still gets the out eventually. And now with two down and a runner at first. Mike El Garcia will be the hitter. He singled to the opposite field his first time up. He’s also str up I should say. He’s also struck out. One out of two. First pitch. Pass on the inside corner for a strike on Mike El hitting fifth. Playing third base tonight. very consistent hitter for the Royals this year. Seeing Robbie Ray for the third time tonight, third time in his career in this plate appearance. 01 basketball misses way outside 1 and one. Mike’s got his average up to 304 with an opposite field single in the fourth inning. If he’s able to reach, Mark Cana would bat next. Then he singled with one out. Now he leads from first with two down here in the top of the sixth. Now the pitch and it’s taken for a strike. Fast ball at 94 by number 11 Mike El Garcia who’s drawn 19 walks by the way. So great plate discipline to go with his excellent skills with the bat this year. Crowd coming alive with a runner at first. Two down and a one and two count on Mike. Here’s the pitch and a swing. This strikes him out with a breaking ball. That’s six of them now for Ray who strikes out the next two hitters after the Vinnie single. And we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. No score. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. It may go crazy folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the of three to two and a home run by the Wizards. Catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. The big hits, all the greats. Those will be home all next week beginning Memorial Day Monday afternoon when Cincinnati comes in next Monday afternoon a 3-10 ball game against the Reds and the Royals get home Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week against Cincinnati. Then a week from this weekend, it’ll be the Detroit Tigers in town for the first time this year. Currently the first place team in the American League Central, losing tonight in St. Louis. In fact, they lost 11 to four to the Cardinals tonight. Sam Huff, number nine hitter, their right-handed hitting catcher, leads off the San Francisco sixth inning. No score. And Bubich’s first pitch, breaking ball, has swung on and missed. Strike one on Sam Huff, who struck out his first time out. Chris has struck out three. He’s walked two. And now the next one. Swing and a miss. Gets ahead 0 and two. No runs, five hits, no errors for the Royals. No runs, no hits, one error for the Giants. 02 and a breaking ball is called. Strike three. Got him looking. Oh, Bubich with his fourth strike on the night. And Elliot Ramos up for a third time. He’s popped out. Fouled to first and grounded back to the pitcher. 0 for two. Pitch from Chris. And it’s a breaking ball in the dirt. Skips away from Salvador Perez. Been a frustrating night for the Royals offense. It’s been business as usual for the Royals pitching defense. One and0 and the pitch and a breaking ball jams him and it’s fouled off to the left over the area where Wilmer Flores is waiting to hit next. Giants occupied the third base dugout at home. One and one and the pitch and a swing and a chopper left side glove by Bouvage from the third base side of the mount. throws a strike to Vinnie for the second out of the inning. Bubich very smoothly, calmly, no rushing, no panic. Played it beautifully for the second out. And now with two down and nobody on, Wilmer Flores, their DH, right-handed batter, will stand in. He has popped to second and fly to right tonight. Bubich about to throw his 73rd pitch of the night here in the sixth inning. Here’s the pitch and a big curveball as a call strike. Royals really want to see Bouvich go deep tonight and they want to see Lorenzan go deep tomorrow for obvious reasons. You want them to be effective and save your bullpen. But Wednesday, we don’t know who the Royal starter is going to be at this point. Here’s the 01 and a slow breaking ball drops in there for a quick strike two and to the count. So, we don’t know. that it could be a quote unquote bullpen day. And if the Royals are going to have to use a combo of pitchers Wednesday with the off day coming up Thursday, they’d certainly love to get length not just tonight but tomorrow night. Save those arms. 02 and a swing and a bouncer to the right side to his left. Massie, he slipped and it gets by him into right center field. And William Wilmer Flores hit a ball that off the bat looked like it was going to be a 43. And it’ll be an error on Massie. It’s an eight game on base streak for Flores. Massie just had his feet slip out from under him going far to his left to the outfield grass. The ball got by him into right center and it’s ruled an error. So still no hits yet for the Giants as Massie was trying to plant and then field. He just slipped on the edge of that outfield grass. So runner at first, two down for Jung who Lee Rub has allowed three base runners now. Two walks and an error. Lee a left-handed batter. Second year in the big leagues. First pitch to breaking balls are called strike. Lee has grounded a second and grounded a short tonight. Flores leads from first. Two down. Bubich delivers and a breaking ball waved at missed by Lee, native of South Korea. Here’s the O2. And a breaking ball misses down and away. It’s one and two on this batter. Three hole hitter. Giants began the night 28-9. We mentioned just a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West. One and two. And now the pitch and a swing of miss and a breaking ball. And that’s another strike on number five on the night for Bubich through six scoreless hitless innings. We go to the seven. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one into right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three-2 and a home run by the Wizards. He’s at 80 pitches. Bubich at 79 pitches. Mark Kenna has an infield hit and a line out to left. One out of two leading off the seventh, no score. First pitch from Robbie Ray. Curve ball drops in there for strike one. Called on the left fielder tonight. Mark Penna who played his college ball at the University of California, Berkeley. Very close by. 01 and it misses down and in. One and one the count. Hannah to be followed by Massie and Renfro. And there’s a breaking ball pulled foul up the third base side. Both Cana and Bubich’s alma moers both proud members of the Atlantic Coast Conference now. Stanford and Cal. Yeah, they have to fly to North Carolina for the ACC tournament. Uh, get your frequent fly flyer miles in that conference now if you’re a West Coast athlete maybe. Here’s the one two and a fast ball fouled straight back. Hannah was right on it, but he fouled it back. So, it is a hit now. They changed the scoring on the Wilmer Flores error. I kind of wondered if that might happen. So, it’s a base hit. It’s the first hit of the night. No longer a no hitter for but most importantly it is a shut out to this point and the next one a can a swing and he taps a foul. Oh what an unceremonious way for a no hit bid to endet error on the wet grass changed to an infield hit. Yeah. And think of it is that’s a play Massie makes 99 out of 100 times at least. Yeah. Which which to me suggests that it should be an error. That was not a surprise when it was an error. At least to me, I’m more surprised that it’s a hit now. One and two and the pitch and a swing and a foul back. We get in trouble in our business assuming something’s going to happen on the field. But in my head as I was watching that, I thought he’s got this. Well, the idea is that they got by him. It’s an error if there’s a play that you can make with regular effort is not made. And that was not an extraordinary effort for Massie. It was regular effort on not a very hard hit ball. Here’s the one-two fast ball line right up the middle of base hit. He hit it hard right through the box and the second hit of the night for Canaan. And that’s one of the harder balls the Royals have. They haven’t hit many hard balls. They haven’t hit many balls at all tonight. That one he hit hard right up the middle for a leadoff single here in the seventh inning. See, that’s a hit. Yeah, that’s a hit. That’s the kind of hit you want if you’re going to see a no hitter broken out. I’ll be honest, I’m pretty surprised it was changed. Michael Massie will stand in. I mean, it looked like somebody just waxed the floor and he went down. His feet just went out from under him, which obviously was not. He was just trying to plant his feet and make a routine play. Blanco is going to run now for Cana at first base. First pitch is high for a ball to Massie. So, Blanco running for Cana. One and0 on Massie. Certainly capable of hitting one into McCabby Cove. One and0 on the pitch and he swings and fouls it back. Pretty good cut that time. One and one on Michael who’s off to a slow start this year. Just a couple of home runs. He can pull one into that alley in right center. Triples alley. could easily get Blanco home. Even if it stays in the yard, he could get Blanco home with a bunt. Yeah. Now the runner goes. They got a picked off. Third down to first into the short stop covering at second. So it goes Ray to Schmidt to Adamus. And now here comes Matt Couturo running out of the dugout wondering about the pickoff move or the move period. He’s out there to argue immediately with the second base up Jordan Baker who is throwing Motero out of the game. They’re arguing right in front of second base right now. You know, Sue, that was a a pretty quick hook, but b I’m pretty sure that Matt Cotero is talking about blocking the base, which is something that was a point of emphasis for umpires the beginning of last season, but we have not seen called all that much. And Q clearly thinks it should have been called on that play. He’s still in Jordan Baker’s face. It went Ray to Schmidt to Adamus for the tag at second base about two years ago in his first trip here as a manager of the Royals. He wasn’t with the team as he had co at that time two years ago and here he is in his first game ever managing in this ballpark. He’s coached here before, never managed here. We’re looking at the replay. He’s been ejected. So throws a little offline. The knee was in front of the base and Blanco tried to reach around Adamus to tag second but he was out. Now you are allowed to block the base but you have to have the baseball first and Adamus did not have the ball. The one and one on Massie. Here’s the pitch and a fast ball. Good cut. Fouled straight back. They’re getting better swings on Robbie Ray in this inning as his pitch count is up there now. He’s hit 90 now. 90 pitches, very good percentage of strikes, 66 of them. One and two. Sixth career ejection from Q. And there’s a wave of miss and a fast ball up. And that’s a strike out of Massie for the second out of the inning. That is strike out number seven for the veteran left-hander Robbie Ray. So two down, nobody on, and the batter will be Hunter Refro. Hunter has grounded out and struck out tonight. 0 for two. He’s picked it up offensively of late. Let’s see if he can get on here with two down. Top of the seventh. No score. Robbie Ray back to work. Straddles the rubber. Now kicks and delivers. And a breaking ball misses low. Ball one. A Hunter Renfro the right fielder. Hits in four straight games coming into this one. Five for 15 in those matches, but 0 for two tonight. He does have three hits and three home runs against this pitcher, but he came in three for 32 against him. So, a very low batting average against him, but he has gone deep against him three times. One and0. And the pitch and it’s a called strike. And it’s one and one on Renfro here at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The first game of a three-game series and six-game road trip for the Royals. Now the 1-1 and a swing and a high pop fly shallow left. Adamus the shortstop backpedaling. He’ll make the catch and the Royals are down in the seventh. Time to stretch here in San Francisco. No score. But the youth take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. So, a couple of righties tomorrow night and then a day game on Wednesday of this week. 2:45 will be the first pitch Wednesday afternoon for you. We’ll be on at 2:00. We know Logan Webb will pitch for the Giants. We don’t yet know who will be on the mound to start that game for the Royals. Matt Chapman leads off 0 for two, a pop out foul and a strike out. faces Bubich here in the seventh. First pitch is a curve that misses outside for a ball. Tyrone Blanco pinch ran in the top of the inning. He’s now the left fielder. One and0 the count. Bubich comes set now his next one and a swing and a one hopper to Bobby from the outfield grass. Now steps onto the dirt. Fires a strike to Vinnie for the out. So Chapman’s 0 for three now. Willie Adamus their shorts stop a strike out. Got a pop out tonight. Smart for Bobby to step back on. I thought about the wet grass as he did that. He was so close to the dirt. It was easy for him to move on to the dirt to make sure he had good footing. Adamus is a right-handed batter and he takes a strike from Bubich who’s at 82 pitches as he works here in the seventh. No runs for either team. Royals about hit the Giants six to one and one on Adamus. Next one and it’s upstairs. Adamus is 29 and he’s been a winner everywhere he’s been. Been a long time with Tampa Bay, the team he came up with. Part of a big trade to Milwaukee. Helped that team big time for several years now in his first year with the Giants. And now a big swing and a miss. Actually a foul tip. One and two on Adamus. A ball. Two strikes. Right-handed batter. Left-handed pitcher Bubich with those knee high royal blue socks. Number 50 Bubich. Now the one two and he misses outside off speed. Two and two on Adamus. keeps dropping his erra. It was 166 when the night started. Down to 148 now. Two- two pitch and a breaking balls down in the dirt. It’s three and two. Two starts ago, Bubich went seven innings. He’s gone seven a couple of times this year. He’s two outs away from doing that tonight. payoff pitch and it’s high and away ball four. So the third walk issued by Chris Bubich tonight to go with his five strikeouts and one hit he’s allowed. The ball hit to the right side that was originally ruled an error changed to a hit in the sixth inning. And now the batter is Casey Schmidt. their first baseman who’s lined to center and drawn a walk tonight. Bubich has not had a double play turn behind him yet. Here’s the first pitch. Swing and a liner Garcia down the left field line hit for the corner. Adonis around second. He’ll stop at third and PC Smith doubles down the left field line and the biggest threat of the night. They’re at second and third with one down. The Giants had their first real hit of the night and the Royals did get a fortunate bounce. The ball kicked off the angled sidewall right to Dyron Blanco in the corner. So, he didn’t have to play it off the fence behind him. He was able to play it off the sidewall. That allowed him to get it back in quickly and force Adamus to start at third. If that ball got to the fence, there’s a good chance Adamus scores from first. You’re right. And now Paul Hoover, who’s the Royals acting manager with M. Petero having been ejected. Hoove is the bench coach and he wears a lot of hats for the Royals. Oh, this is Brian Sweeney. I’m sorry. Brian Sweeney, the Royals pitching coach is out there. So, Sweeney is out there, but just so you know, Hoover is managing with Q having been ejected from the ball game. Daniel Lynch is warming the Royals pan lefty as the Royals now, they’ve got such a great pitching performance from Bubich tonight, but no offense to support him. And so, the infield has to come in with second and third and one down. Tyler Fitzgerald has a walk and a ground out tonight. Second and third, one out. Bottom of the seventh inning, no score. Right-handed batter. Bubich, the lefty delivers. It’s a bunt and the batter squares and it’s a strike. Oh, it’s ruled a ball. I think Salvage just saved a run. That pitch was in the dirt and he blocked it in front with his glove and that kept Adamus from scoring from third. The batter did pull the bat back. So, one and0. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, you hate to a lot of managers hate to bring the infant into a second and third, but in this situation, you really don’t have much choice cuz obviously a ball that gets through is going to score two and not just one here. One and0 now the pitch and a swing and a foul off at the plate. Now it’s one and one on right-handed hitting Tyler Fitzgerald who came in at 295 on the year in batting average. A pass. Martino is really far in at first base right now. Fitzgerald just took a full swing and now he backs up a couple of steps but still very in. Ball on a strike and the pitch. He swings and lines it to Bobby. Flips to Garcia. A double play. Goes six to five on the flip from Bobby over to Michael Garcia at third. Will the Giants challenge the play at third base? No challenge. So the ball wasn’t lined that hard, but the infield was in. Bobby to Mike. Two outs with one swing. Inning over. We go to the It’s still scoreless. Take a guessing which baseball player or maners said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Sundays at 11:30 Eastern. Flip to Garcia covering third to double off Adamus and we remain scoreless. We go to the eighth at Oracle Park and the Giants have made the game’s first pitching change. This call to the bullpen is powered by Wholesale Batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. It’s right-hander Tyler Rogers now into the game for the Giants and Kyle Isel leads off for the Royals. Here’s the pitch and it’s a submarine fastball over the outer edge called strike and it’s 0 and one. This is Tyler Rogers, not to be confused with Taylor Rogers, his twin brother. Little bit easier to tell him apart now. All one pitch. Isbel chops it back to the mound. Rogers fields throws sort of sidearm over to first and Isbell’s out one away. Back to the top of the lineup and Jonathan India. The Rogers brothers were both part of this Giants bullpen for the last couple of years, but this past off season, the Giants traded Taylor Rogers over to the Cincinnati Reds. Split up the duo. Tyler’s the righty, Taylor’s the lefty. Tyler delivers and India takes a slider over the outside edge called strike and it’s 0 and one. So we’ll see the brother next week. That’s right. India is 0 for two tonight. Has also drawn a walk. The pitch fisted foul into the back stop netting and it’s 0 and2. Tyler Rogers this year has made 22 appearances. He’s only given up three runs in 21 and a third innings. That’s good enough for a 127 erra. He’s struck out 18. He’s walked three and opponents are hitting just 151 against it. On the mound in a scoreless game top of the eighth, the pitch slider just low and outside and it’s one and two on India. Rogers does not throw all that hard, but he has arguably the most unconventional arm slot in baseball. The pitch and slices foul ground first base side. Schmidt sprints over, but it’s into the sidnetting foul. One and two. I don’t think at least can’t think of any other submarine pitcher currently in baseball. I mean, he is scraping his knuckles kind of like Chad Bradford, Dan Quizenberry once upon a time. The pitch popped up foul down the first base line headed for the seats on the other side of the netting. still one and two on India. Usually it’s a some a little bit like a knuckle ball, a pitch of desperation when either either arm trouble or ineffectiveness has caused you to pitch not to pitch overhand or 3/4 or even sidearm. Try something new. Here’s the one two bounce straight back. still a ball and two strikes. And you know, as he was warming up and then first pitching to Isbel, I was thinking, I wonder how he feels his position. And then Isbel hit the comebacker and he threw kind of a three/4er arm slot to first. I was wondering he was going to throw submarine to first. The pitch way high and outside. Two balls, two strikes on India. Yeah, it’s one thing to fool the hitter. You don’t want to fool all your infielders. Well, just because that’s your natural motion, you know, you wouldn’t necessarily want to change that defensively. I don’t know. But most of these guys started over the top and they’re throwing it normally. Two two India pokes a foul off the top of the back stop netting and hit the top wire and then bound it into the stands. And there’s nobody that grows up throwing submarine in the little league. Right. Right. Except, you know, just for a win just for fun one day. It has certainly worked for Tyler Rogers over the course of his career. Here’s the pitch. Andy al lines it into left center field. Lee sprints back. He won’t get this one. This one hops into the fence. And is headed for second base. His helmet flies off. He stops at second with a one out double. The Royals have a runner in scoring position for just the third time tonight. Well, the Giants failed to bring a run in with their golden opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning. Giants at second and third, one out and failed to score. The Royals have been trying to break through all night long. Can they now? Kevin Beio pinch runs at second base for Jonathan India. And Bobby Wit Jr. steps to the plate against the Submariner Tyler Rogers. Here’s the pitch. blasted high in the air deep to left field. Rip Ramos runs it down at the track and Beio goes back to second. Man off the bat that looked like it was headed for the Coca-Cola bottle. Got fooled by the marine layer now with the sun going down. Twilight in San Francisco. Now what’s amazing is it’s only 354 to the alley in left center. So it’s it’s pretty friendly in a normal environment, but this is not that. So two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Beio leads off second. Pasquantino at the plate facing Rogers. The pitch and it’s a fast ball outside. Ball one. So the Royals tonight have stranded five on base. The Royals are now 0 for four with runners in scoring position. The one pitch pass. Quentino launches it deep to right field. Mtos is on the track. Looks up. It’s on the second row of bleachers up above the high right field fence. Big pass. Quintino clears the bricks and scores the first two runs of the game with one swing. Two nothing Royals in the top of the eighth inning. passino’s eighth home run of the season. He took a slider over the outside edge and hit it right on top of the right field fence. The 20ft high wall in right center, 399 ft homer for Pascantino. And now the first pitch to Salvi is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one and home runs. Our quick trip hit of the game. Quick trip more than a gas station. Rogers delivers and pass when Tino swings and slips. He comes up empty. It’s 0 and2 pardon Salvi. Here’s the pitch up and away. the one ball, two strikes on Salvador Perez. That’s just the second home run that Rogers has allowed this season. The one two outside two balls, two strikes on Salvador Perez. So Vinnie Pasquentino gives the Royals their first hit with a runner in scoring position and breaks the scoreless tie. The 2-2 line foul third base side. Still two balls and two strikes on Salvador Perez. It looked like it would be deep enough. The question was whether or not it would be high enough. The right field wall in that area is 20 ft high. The pitch Perez dribbles it toward third. Chapman charges, scoops, and fires to first in time for the out inning over. But the Royals have taken a late lead on a two-run homer from Vinnie Pasquentino. He launched one onto the bleachers on top of what they call Levis’s landing here in San Great Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith Corks went into right down the line. It may go crazy, folks. So crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the start of three to two and a home run by the Wizards. But we all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. Daniel Lynch the fourth takes the mound. He replaces Chris Bubich who was brilliant tonight. Seven shutout innings. This call to the bullpen is powered by Wholesale Batteries. Any battery any time delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. It’s another Bubich gem. Seven shutout innings. He only allowed two hits and only one real hit at that. Bubich struck out five to issued three walks. Wriggled out of a jam with some help from his defense in the bottom of the seventh. And now it’s up to Daniel Lynch the fourth to keep the Royals in front. He faces Luis Moss to start the inning. Here’s the pitch. Mtos rolls it foul. Third base side into the Giants dugout. 0 and one. Moss is 0 for two tonight. He’s now 0 for his last 16. Right-handed hitting Sam Huff on deck and then back to the top of the lineup and righty Elliot Ramos. Lynch delivers. Fast ball rolled softly to the right side. Massie feet per firmly planted on the dirt. Swoops it up and makes the throw to first in time. One away. Brings up Sam Huff. So this would normally be a situation where we’d see Lucas Ersk, but he threw 26 pitches yesterday and got five outs. So not only did he throw 26 pitches, but he also pitched in two different innings. First pitch to Huff. Fast popped up foul out of play off to the right. 0 and one. So it appears as though Ersg is unavailable tonight. There is action in the Royals bullpen behind Lynch. It’s Shriber warming up the 01. It’s high. One ball, one strike. And that pretty much tells you that Ersk is unavailable tonight. Or at least the Royals would really like to stay away from Ersk tonight. The 1-1 to Huff outside two and one. It also tells you how well Lynch has been pitching and how highly the Royals think of how well Lynch has been pitching. Now, this is as high leverage as he’s pitched in this season. The 2-1 half swing, full miss from Huff at a high fast ball, and it’s two and two. Well, as Moturo has said many times, you’re going to you’re going to have a a a really good or great season. You’re going to need the whole bullpen. You’re going to need everybody. The two lined up the middle and it’s a base hit into center field for H. He’s on at first with one out for the top of the Giants lineup and Elliot Ramos. Now, this is Lynch’s requisite third batter. Should Wilmer Flores bat in this inning, he’s on deck. It would not be surprising to see Paul Hoover make the pitching change and go to Shriber, who’s warming up in the bullpen. But Lynch has to face Ramos, who did homer yesterday. First pitch to him. It’s high ball one. Ramos does have eight home runs this season. Got a ton of power. Last year he became the first player ever to homer into the cove as a righty. The pitch rolled foul third base side and it’s one and one. No right-handed hitter had ever done it until Elliot Ramos, who’s from Puerto Rico, did it last year on Roberto Clemente day of all days. So yeah, he’s got power. Now Lynch though, it’s not as if he’s struggled against right-handed hitters. His splits have been fairly neutral this season. Lefties hitting 167. Righties are hitting just 220 against him. The 1-1. Ramos lines it into left field. That’s per base hit. Bronco plays it on a backto back singles for the Giants. They’ve got runners on first and second with only one out for Wilmer Florence. And now Paul Hoover pops out of the first base dugout to as expected make the pitching change. John Shriber has been warming up in the Royals bullpen. Daniel Lynch the fourth got one out in the bottom of the eighth. But now Hoover and company turn to Shriber to get the next two. Paul Hoover takes the baseball. John Shriber’s coming in to face Wilmer Flores. Royals two, Giants nothing here in the eighth. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 9/11. Here moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. This call to the bullpen is powered by Wholesale Batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. Big big spot in the bottom of the eighth. Runners on first and second. One out. The Royals lead the Giants two nothing. John Shribers into the game to face Wilmer Flores who entered tonight as the major league leader with 42 RBI’s. He is a 395 hitter this season with runners on base. And that is the situation now. It’s a dire one. First pitch from Shriber outside ball one. Uh Shriber’s no stranger to this situation. He’s now inherited 17 runners this season. He’s only allowed four inherited runners to score. The one pitch outside again. Two balls, no strikes. Now, that said, Shriber has also only retired the first batter he’s faced 11 times in his 21 appearances. the 200 in for a strike and it’s two and one. Now Chris Bubich delivered seven shut out innings and before he left the game, Vinnie Pasquentino gave the Royals the lead with a two-run homer. It’s up for the Royals bullpen to make it stand up. The 2-1 Flores dribbles it foul behind the plate and it’s two and two. Now the Royals bullpen has been overall very good this season. a 319 erra. That is sixth best in all of baseball. Sam Hump is in second base. He’s the Giants catcher tonight. So, not their fastest runner. Elliot Ramos is at first base. He does have good speed. He represents the potential tying run. Royals two. Giants nothing. Bottom of the eighth. Runners on first and second, one out. The pitch, it’s low and the count’s full on Wilbur Florence. Just over 28,000 at Oracle Park tonight. And they’ve been getting louder with every pitch in this inning. Here’s the payoff. Missed it. Fell first base side off the netting. Still three and two on Florence. John Hulie, a left-handed hitter, is on deck. Skies are Navy now. Stadium lights have been on since first pitch. Wind is whipping out to right center. Another 3-2. Swing on a miss. Strike three. Tied him up with a sinker. Up and in. A huge pitch from John Shriber to get the second out of the inning. Wilmer Flores heads back to the third base dugout in a pretzel. And now they chant for Jung Julie. Salvador Perez goes out of the M for a quick check. And Lee has quickly become a fan favorite here in San Francisco. There’s even a whole cheering section for him at a bunch of the home games. They call themselves the hulie gans. Get it? The hooligans. But it’s for Jung Hul Lee. Pretty good. That is it. Salvi heads back behind home plate tonight. Lee is 0 for three. A couple of ground outs and a swinging strikeout. That was all against Bubic, a lefty. Now it’s Shriber, a righty on the mound. First pitch to Lee. It’s a fast ball up high. And that’s ball one. Runners on first and second. Two outs. Bottom of the eighth. Royals up two nothing. Shriber delivers. Lee lines it over. Pass room down the right field line toward the corner. Brown’s third. He’s in to score. Ramos gets held at third. throw comes back to the infield. It’s an RBI double for John Hulie and the Royals lead is trimmed to one. It’s now a two to one game in the bottom of the eighth inning. And the Giants have runners on second and third with two outs and Matt Chapman coming to the plate. And now Kyle Turner has come out from the first base dugout. Royals head athletic trainer and he’s talking to Vinnie Pasquentino who leapt to try and grab that soft liner. He extended his glove way above his head. I’m not sure if the extension caused him any pain or landing caused him any pain, but KT certainly saw something or somebody else saw something. The Pascino’s nodding. There hasn’t been any gesture to any area of the body. Still talking with KT and now he heads back to the first base dugout. Passino stays in the game. Meanwhile, Brian Sweeney came out of the first base dugout for a mound visit before Shriber faces Chapman. So, this has been a difficult inning for Daniel Lynch the fourth and for John Shriber, both of whom pinched yesterday and combined to get four outs and only allow one hit. Runners on second and third, two outs. Bottom of the eighth, Royals two, Giants one. Matt Chapman at the plate. Be honest, it wouldn’t have been all that surprising if the Royals had decided to intentionally walk him with a base open. I know they’re going right after him. Triber delivers way outside. Ball one. This could be an unintentional intentional walk. If he gets himself out, great. If he doesn’t, well, then you take your chances against Willie Adamis on deck, who has not been as good as Matt Chapman offensively this season. The one pitch way outside, two balls, no strikes. It’s hard not to wonder what this inning might have looked like had Ersk taken the mound in the eighth. the way he’s been lights out this season, but clearly unavailable tonight or at least being avoided at all costs. The two over the outer edge are called strike two and one. Yeah, 26 pitches in an inning and two/3. It’s almost like he pitched two innings yesterday. You know, he’d love to be out there. Ramos represents the potential tying run at third. Jung Hu Lee represents the potential go-ahead run at second. The pitch Chapman pops it up. First base side foul ground. Salvi sheds the mass. Runs towards the dugout underneath it. Makes the squeeze. Inning over. Runners stranded. John Shriber bends but does not break. The Royals preserve their lead. That’s schneiderjob.com. We go to the ninth inning at Oracle Park. Royals two, Giants one. This game was scoreless through seven innings. Both Robbie Ray and Chris Bubich were as advertised. They both delivered seven shutout innings, but both teams scored in the eighth against their respective bullpens. The Royals got two runs in the top of the inning on a Vinnie Pasquantino two-run homer. The Giants scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double from Jung Hulie. Mike El Garcia leads off the ninth. Right-hander Jordan Hicks is on the mound for the Giants. First pitch, fast ball high. That’s ball one. 96 mph heat from Jordan Hicks, who was moved to the bullpen after opening the season in the Giants rotation. He’s made nine starts this year, but he’s struggled. The one fast ball high, two balls, no strikes. That was a fast ball at 99. Now Hicks in his nine starts at a 655 ERA. Gave up 33 runs in his 45 innings. Didn’t make it past the second inning in his last start. The pitch. Garcia lines it sharply back up the middle. A base hit into center field. He starts the ninth with a single. Now Garcia already extended his hitting streak to five games earlier tonight. Now he’s got another multi-hit game. Dyron Blanco brings up Dyrron Blanco who’s in Marata’s spot. Blanco entered the game as a pinch runner back in the seventh. So this is Blanco’s first plate appearance of the night. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him try and bunt. Chapman’s behind the cutout at third, charging in. Here’s the pitch. Blanco squares, pulls back, takes a strike. 0 and one. Well, the Giants have Chapman preparing to sprint in from third. Willie Adamus was ready to cover second. That seemed like a miscommunication as Fitzgerald did too. The pitch. Blanco squares, drops it down first base side. Blanco sprints to first. Fitzgerald covers and gets an underhand toss from Hicks for the out. So Garcia goes over to second. A successful sacrifice for Blanco. And now Michael Massie comes to the plate with a runner on second and one out. Massiey’s 0 for three tonight. A fly out, a foul out, and a strike out. Hicks delivers. Fastball line foul. First base out of play and it’s 0 and one. Carlos Estz is warming up in the bullpen for the Royals. One-run game top of the ninth. The Royals lead two to one. The pitch. Massie lines it sharply into left, but it hangs up for Ronaldos who makes the catch coming in. And Massiey’s out. Two gone. Now Hanks has given up his fair share of hard contact this year. His hard hit rate is up near 45%. and he’s had mostly some bad batted ball luck. That’s contributed to his erra of six and a half, but he got lucky right there. So now Hunter Renfro was 0 for three tonight. Here’s the pitch. Outside ball one. The Royals only have one hit with a runner in scoring position tonight. It was Vinnie Pasantino’s two-run homer to right center. Nicks delivers outside. Two balls, no strikes on Renfro. Looking ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning, the Giants have 5, six, and seven do up. Adamis Schmidt and Fitzgerald taking a turn towards second. Nobody was covering. Garcia jumped toward third and then scrambled back. Had Fitzgerald been covering, maybe Hicks would have tried to throw and try to pick off. The two pitch sinker down and in. Three balls, no strikes on Renfro. Kyle Isbel would be next. Hicks delivers inside ball four. That is a four pitch walk to the Royals number eight hitter and a struggling one at that in Renfro. And so Kyle Isel gets a chance with runners on first and second and two outs. Now Isbel has been a much different hitter on the road this year than he’s been at home. Difference in batting average of about 200 points. But he has also been a much different hitter this season against right-handed pitching than he has against left-handed pitching. The pitch sinker low ball one. And now Hicks has missed with five straight. They sure have it open on the wide open on the left side of the infield for him. We’ve seen him on many occasions go to the opposite field on the ground successfully. The pitch outside, two balls, no strikes. And now Hicks has missed with six consecutive pitches. And that one was a little bit closer than the last. 28,000 extra umpires here. Thought it was a strike. Two balls, no strikes on Isbel. And the pitch fast ball up and away. Ball three. That was at 100. But it doesn’t matter how hard you throw it if it’s not in the strike zone. So three balls, no strikes on Isbel with Kevin Beio on deck. Remember he pinch ran in the eighth. Hicks delivers. It’s down the middle of strike. Three and one. And there’s a sarcastic cheer for Jordan Hicks. And likes to mention the Giants infield is pulled to the right side with a lefty at the plate. The pitch. Isel slashes it up the middle. Things hit into center field. Garcia rounds third. He comes in to score. Rampro caught off second. Garcia scores. Rross tapped out. That ends the inning. But Garcia cross first. The run does count and the Royals take a three to one lead. The out on the bases ends what could have been a bigger rally, but the Royals did at least get one insurance run before it’s a great night for baseball. This matchup features some of the best talent in the game. A lot of power, a lot of marquee names. Here we go. Buckle up, folks. There’s a guy we want to be in the spot. The bats have stopper. Royals three, Giants won bottom of the ninth and Carlos Estz takes the mound. This call to the bullpen is powered by Wholesale Batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. Steves has been terrific this season. 13 saves this year. His first pitch to Willie Adamis. It’s a slider over the low outside corner called strike one. Estas picked up the save just yesterday with a scoreless ninth against the Cardinals. The 01 pitch. It’s over the outer half. A called strike 0 and two. That time a change up right on right to a ste and he looked bad to Adamus. He calls time and steps out. Willie Adam tonight is 0 for two. He’s also trying to walk. He was also doubled off third base on a crucial play in the bottom of the seventh. The pitch popped up first base side foul ground. Salvi takes up the mask. He’s by the on deck circle waiting for it to come down. He makes the catch and Adamus is out. One away in the bottom of the ninth inning. brings up Casey Schmidt or at least Schmidt was doo Lamont Wade Jr. stepped to the plate to pinch hit for Schmidt. Wade is a left-handed hitter, though he has struggled this season. He’s got one of the lowest batting averages among qualified hitters this year. Here’s the pitch on the high inside corner called strike. It’s 0 and one. Wade is batting just 165 this season. Well, he has always been a patient hitter that can draw a walk. He’s choked up on the bat now. The pitch line softly into right center field down in front row a base hit. So Lay Jr. comes off the bench for the Giants and collects just his 21st hit of the season. And now the Giants bring the potential tying run to the plate in right-handed hitting Tyler Fitzgerald. Now this season, Estz, in addition to earning 13 saves, has struck out 18. He’s also walked 10 though in his 20 and two/3 innings. Opponents though were hitting just 197 against him. Here’s the pitch. Fitzgerald pops it up first base side foul ground. Pascino calls for it and he makes the catch. Two outs. Now both Pasquantino and Perez have been busy in foul territory tonight. That is the fourth time tonight that the Giants have popped out to the foul territory in front of the Royals dugout. And now the Royals are one out away. Mike Ystreky comes to the plate to pinch hit for Luis Matoss, another left-handed hitter. And Ystreky has got some power. He’s got five home runs this season. He’s got 111 home runs in his big league career, 18 last year. The wind is blowing out to right field. Stressky’s the potential tying run at the plate. Quick mound conference from Salvi and Vinnie. Now they’re back to their spots and ready to go. Infield shifted to the right side against Royals three, Giants one, bottom nine. Here’s the pitch. Wade takes second and Yremsky clips it into Salvi’s mid. Strike one. Defensive indifference puts Wade at second base. No balls, one strike on Mike Estreky. Homeplayed umpire Dan Miselle dusts off home play. He wants to make sure he gets a good look. Nobody scored until the eighth and the Royals took the lead on Vinnie Pasquentino’s two-run homer. The 01 pitch bounced straight back into the netting 0 and two. The Giants got a run in the bottom of the eighth but stranded a pair in scoring position. The Royals got one back in the top of the ninth, though they might have had more if not for an out of the bases that ended the inning. It is yet another close game for the Royals. They have played more than it seems than just about anybody in baseball. O2K. Here’s the pitch. Swung on and miss. Strike three blocking. Carlos Estz locks it down in the bottom of the ninth and the Royals have a second consecutive win. and his second consecutive heart pounder. Royals three, Giants one. A pitcher duel that became a thriller in San Francisco. Vinnie Pasquentino’s two-run homer carries the night. The Royals added a run in the ninth and the offense supports Chris Bouvich’s brilliance. Seven shutout innings to open the game and just enough from the bats. The Royals improve to 27 and 22. The Giants fall to 28 and 20 for the Giants in the bottom of the ninth.
