Thought this was interesting insight into a similarish situation to Caleb not knowing how to watch film. This is pretty damning for us to decide now to have a veteran qb last year. I saw a lot of comments that automatically assumed Caleb was in the wrong here but this perspective shows otherwise – apparently Alex Smith was another QB that wasn’t taught to watch film early in his career too.

  1. i know this may sound like a cheesy idea for QB development if it comes a big thing, but I think a 1st year coach coming in to a 2nd year QB is a genius idea. it’s a good idea to talk to a person who has gone through that on a mental performance and understanding level. even if the situations aren’t a direct match it’s a great mentorship, especially if they’re still in the league as a veteran QB

  2. Kurt Warner shares some good insight.

    1. He wasn’t aware of coaches studying film with players.

    2. When he was the vet, former MVP, and Super Bowl MVP, none of the young QBs ever asked him for advice about anything.

This is what I understand to be the norm in the NFL. Teams sometimes bring vets “for the room,” but they can’t force anything, and big shot 1st round picks think WTF can I learn from a backup/failure?
