Are The St. Louis Cardinals Here To Stay? They Just THUMPED The Best Team In MLB!
I don’t know if we’re completely there yet, but at a certain point, we might just have to come to recognize that the St. Louis Cardinals in 2025 are legit and that they’re here to stay. A big win over the Tigers on Monday. We’ll talk about it coming up on Bshape [Music] Daily. What’s going on everyone and welcome in to this edition of BHA Daily. Brendan Schaer with you. It is Monday evening, May 19th, 2025. The Cardinals just keep going. 7-2 on the road trip. Nine games, three cities, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Kansas City. The Cardinals played really well. Now they come home, face the team with the most wins in baseball on Monday, the Detroit Tigers. And the Cardinals pound them into submission. 11 to4 the Cardinals win. And it wasn’t even as close as that might indicate as the Cardinals were up 11 to nothing at one point in this game. The Detroit Tigers bringing in Tomas Neato to pitch. He is not a pitcher by trade. If you wanted to know how out of hand this game was, that’ll give you the indication as the Cardinals, well, they pounded the Tigers who started things off with an opener. That didn’t go great and it didn’t really get much better from there as St. Louis piles up. 10 runs, nine of them earned on the Detroit bullpen, including a barrage against John Brebio. The former Cardinal didn’t have his best night in the return to Bush Stadium tonight as he gave up five runs. Four of them were earned on five hits while recording just one out. Gives up the punctuating home run as it was Pedro Pah who took him deep in this one. Cardinals win it big and they just continue to roll. And even as a little cherry on top, I told you not to pay attention to the standings for a little while because of just how many bad teams in a row the Chicago Cubs are going to get to face, but they lost to one of them on Monday night. The Marlins getting an 8 to7 win over the Cubs, which puts the Cardinals back to within a game of Chicago in the division. The Cubs don’t play a real legitimate team any better than the Reds between now and June 6th. This is a trend that’s been the case. It’s been true for the past week or so as they played the Marlins and the White Socks last week. I said starting in that stretch, you’re going to see them rattle off about 18 out of 25. Yeah, if the Marlins can help out a little bit, maybe that looks like a different number than what I expected. But the Cardinals are at least doing their business and that’s all that really counts. Keep that focus and they have done so with the lineup really getting the job done. You have six different guys in Monday’s lineup go for multi-hit games. N bar win. Donovan with a three for five. That’s his fourth three or better hit game in the past five games. He has had three or more hits in four of the last five that he has played. The batting average up to 337. The on base or excuse me the OPS up to 867. Donovan has been fantastic. But you also got multi-hit game from Ivon Herrera who continues to rake. He’s hitting 426 on the season. The OPS at 1299. Alec Berles had a couple of hits in two at bats tonight before he gave way to Jordan Walker who came up with a clutch double off the wall to extend the Cardinals lead prior to the home run by Pah as the Cardinals really ported on to Brebia in a sixrun seventh inning. Victor Scott by the way ended up going two for three. Also reached base via walk his OPS at 719. The Cardinals are just rolling top to bottom in this lineup right now. So, we’ll talk about it, but I think we would be remiss if we waited any longer to talk about Sunny Gray and the way that he was able to bounce back from the rough outing that he had in Philly. Remember, that was part of the Cardinals long winning stretch, but it wasn’t a great start for Sunny Gray a handful of days ago. This one, he looked much different, much sharper. 10 strikeouts for Gray in six innings of scoreless baseball. Gave up three hits and one walk. And this is not the case where, oh, he’s pitching against a bad offense or a bad lineup. The Cardinals were facing a team with a bunch of dudes in the lineup with an OPS better than 800 this year, like Spencer Torqulson, uh, Carrie Carpenter, Glaver Torres, Riley Green in the middle of that lineup. There have been a number of guys on that roster performing at a high level. Jav Bayz was the only guy not in the lineup tonight that I would say uh, is is somebody you got to watch out for. in last couple few years. You wouldn’t really call Jav Bayas someone to watch out for, but go ahead, Google his numbers. He’s been better than you might think. He’s really had a resurgent type of year for Detroit. But my point is like Sunny Gray was facing a lineup that’s very capable. It’s a big reason for the Tigers having the best record in baseball, uh, if not the most wins in baseball coming into play on Monday. Sunny Gray did that and he responded really favorably after the outing in Philadelphia where he gave up a bunch of homers. Cardinals did win that game, but he just wasn’t competitive. And I think that is unsurprising. It was a stat that Ethan Hannerford gave me or gave to the viewers on the Sports Upstl postgame show that Ethan and I did on Monday night a little bit ago where he said Sunny Gray following kind of his bad outings this year has had a combined 0.4 for erra in the three times where he’s given up four or more runs. He’s come back the very next appearance and has been stupendous. Sunny Gray is wired that way. Nobody wants to fail. Nobody wants to pitch poorly or play poorly in Major League Baseball. But when Sunny Gray does, when he has those types of outings, he’s the kind of guy that’s going to go search for answers. He’s going to pour into the performance and and and watch some of that video and figure out a way to be better the next time out. he’s going to have that motivation factor and that was certainly the case tonight. Now his numbers have been better at Bush Stadium going back to last year this was true than his numbers have been on the road and the home run has been something that has hampered Sunny Gay for sure in road contests since he became a Cardinal. Why that is, if it’s a different layer of focus at home, if it’s a whatever the environment is creating for him has not been as favorable, but man at Bush Stadium, he has been fantastic and was again tonight. 10 strikeouts is a goddy number that jumps off the page and he just looked every part of Sharp in the way that he carved up the Tigers lineup. He had everything working for him. He’s got a great repertoire. When all his pitches are going, it can be really fun to watch. And it was tonight. Sunny Gray improves to 5-1 despite that 4.02 RA. It’s certainly higher than what you’d expect or want to see from your ace starter and that’s still what Sunny Gray is for this Cardinals team. I think at the end of the season the numbers are going to be a little better than what they’ve been so far and he’s going to be a contributor to Cardinals wins as he has been so far in 2025 with that 5-1 record. Got to find a way to get rid of those kind of want to throw them away types of outings. But I mean, the sharpness is still there. We can still see that for Sunny Gray. I don’t think it’s a a sign of an age related decline. It’s just about that consistency. And that, of course, is the name of the game that all players are searching for throughout Major League Baseball. And Jordan Walker, a hitter on the Cardinal is no exception. And if he can start to bottle what he has been coming up with recently, and tonight it happens in a role off the bench, which I think is so important, was coming against John Breia in that spot. kind of curious uh with with Alec Burlson starting the game. He gets on base three times, was two for two with a walk and then it’s Walker that comes in um if that’s just a case where after the rain delay, you know, didn’t want Walker to continue. I didn’t see the wording from Oy Marvel postgame if that was something he was asked about or if it simply was a matchup that they wanted to give to Jordan Walker. And that’s an aspect of this that I can really appreciate because I think Oliver Marl would would love to use his bench this way. would love to be able to set up scenarios and matchups that can benefit his team. We talk about runway and we talk about the Cardinals trying to give more opportunities to certain guys, but man, we’re really seeing a great version of Jordan Walker in that spot where he’s able to come through and he has had uh hits in uh well, not four consecutive games, I don’t believe um because he did sit the night game of that double header against Philadelphia and then came on but did not register a an at bat. hat. So, I guess sort of that’s a way to consider four consecutive games that he’s had a hit. He scored a run, but uh reached base via another matter. I don’t even remember in the moment whether that was a fieldielder’s choice. I think that might have been the case. But anyway, Jordan Walker, it’s a small sample size, but we’re starting to see some better signs from him. Obviously, the home run that he hit over the weekend was a big one powering the Cardinals in that one to nothing win. So, you’re trying to find glimpses and any signs of life that you can from Walker and I think you’re starting to get that. Can he, as we talked about with Sunny Gray, it’s a matter of consistency at the big league level. How about Walker? Can Jordan Walker be that consistent force in the Cardinal lineup? Because if he can, I think you’re talking about a guy that can still be a differencemaker. He has not yet turned 23 years old. That doesn’t come until later in the week, the 22nd of May. Do not turn your back yet on Jordan Walker. There still could be more to come. And listen, if you get to a point where it’s mid July and and we’re not really sure what it looks like for his playing time because the runway has run out, if he’s not performing, have a conversation about what the future could be. Sure, I don’t know what this trade deadline’s going to look like for the Cardinals. Beyond the com conversation about runway, the trade concepts and the way that this team approaches roster building between now and the end of July to me is a bigger conversation than simply just talking about runway because the Cardinals have a bunch of guys, namely pitchers on expiring contracts who are helping them win games right now. Eric Fetty, Miles Michael, Steven Matz, certainly Ryan Hley. You can even throw Phil Mton into that conversation as he was just a one-year deal. The Cardinals have a bunch of guys who I think would have value when it comes to the trading market across Major League Baseball. Contending teams would want to add a number of these players, but the Cardinals themselves are looking like they’re legitimate, looking like they are a contending team. What do you do when the whole entire premise of your off seasonason was nah, we’re going to kind of do nothing because it’ll save ownership money, but also the trickle down effect of that is we’re going to get to find out about some guys that in another year, in another organization, in another alternate reality. We’re filling holes on the roster with money, with finances, and and the resources that we have there in the offseason to make for the best possible team on paper coming into opening day. Guys, proven guys that have done it before. We’re going to get them in there and we’re going to probably overpay a little bit. And that’s how we’re going to do things as the Cardinals year over year. That’s kind of the way that it’s gone. They would fill holes and they would be almost terrified to find out internally whether some of the unproven options could just kind of step up into those roles because well they would be ridiculed for it. They would be skewered by the fan base in the offseason for not filling the holes that they admit at the end of these uh seasons where they have the end of season press conference. I can go back years. I mean, you could go back at least a decade where there’d be off seasonasons where they say, “Hey, we’ve got to get somebody and it would be, you know, Marcelo Zuna or it’d be Dexter Fowler or it would be Mike Leak or it would be like you’d have these holes and they’d fill them.” Last off season, they filled three holes in the starting rotation. They were legitimate holes. The Cardinals had just lost 91 games and we saw what it looked like when you didn’t have those holes filled. They filled them with Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn and obviously Sunny Gray was the only multi-year deal. And the Cardinals won more games. I mean, they won 83 last year, but their offense wasn’t good enough. So, they fired their hitting coach. They brought in somebody new. They largely ran it back with the same cast and crew offensively. Paul Goldmid walked like you allowed Andrew Kridge to walk. Lynn Gibson, they both walk. You save a lot of money that way. And it’s kind of like, well, we got these guys internally. Whether they internally had a lot of confidence that this team was going to be very good, I don’t know. And you could ask them and whatever answer they give you doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t necessarily tell you what they really believed in their heart of hearts. Like I only marvel said all offseason that he was excited for the season as excited as he had ever been. Was he maybe putting on a little bit? Yeah, perhaps. But I also believe there was some legitimacy to this idea that there was enthusiasm beneath the surface that he could recognize and that maybe the public just needed some time to be able to see play out. But the coaching staff felt it. The players felt it. Every winter warm-up we go to in January feels that way, but this one did feel a little different. We’re like, man, these guys. And come to find out, Oliver Marl was having conversations behind the scenes that weekend with guys like Victor Scott II and then calling his bench coach Daniel Dowso and calling John Mosak and saying, “Hey, by the way, Vic is coming for somebody’s job this year. He’s going to be there. He’s going to be ready.” And lo and behold, we’re seeing a new version of Victor Scott. And like on down the line, I feel like you could have these conversations and it’s not 100% hit rate. Gorman is still not figuring it out. We’re still waiting to see if this little recent run from Jordan Walker can be sustained, but there’s been a lot of those aspects of of players kind of taking steps forward. Matthew Liberator, huge example. Ivon Herrera at the plate, a huge example. Kyle Ley jumps off the page. You’re seeing it from not just the young guys who we hadn’t seen it from before who you would say, hey, in another organization, in another year in this organization, they might not have gotten the runway, the opportunity to begin the season to play and they wouldn’t have gotten to be in the rotation role that Matthew Liberator is in. You know, Kyle Lehey would have been just kind of organizational fodder and in maybe Triple A if they had gone out and signed multiple relievers. That’s not as likely because they they did like Kyle Ley quite a bit last year for good reason. But like he has emerged as somebody that nobody outside of that building really believed he was going to be not this quickly. And so all these things are kind of coming into play. We knew Herrera Rick could hit. What he’s doing is outlandishly impressive at the plate. But then you’re getting guys that they were going to be given the roles, but was their performance going to be kind of like last year or are they going to take it up a notch? You’re seeing Lars Newar consistently, first of all, he’s healthy, but second of all, more consistency, I think, in his performance this year. Brendan Donovan has raised the level of his play. Another year removed from the arm surgery that he had, by the way, repairing the uh I believe it was a UCL repair ultimately, not even the flexor tendon. So, like all of these things, you you start to sit back and think about it and go, “Well, no wonder the Cardinals are really kind of rolling the way that they are.” Remember early this season, we thought the bullpen was just completely untenable. And for a while it was. And you make a couple of tweaks. You do what any team, you know, worth its salt is looking to do and trying to get things back on track. And so far so good. It looks like this bullpen, you introduce new players like Gordon Grapho that could be part of the bullpen mix. Like there’s there’s a churn to that. And the Cardinals, it feels like there’s something there. Offensively, we’ve seen it. Defensively, I mean, the defense is winning this team games like it did on Saturday. the rotation has been I know there have been the moments where you can pick out that it hasn’t been as good right there the the games that stick out in your mind where a guy struggles the rotation as a whole has been unbelievable in terms of the consistency and like a couple of the outlier bad games one of them was Sunny Gray’s a handful of days ago in Philly didn’t even cost him they win that game the other one was the the the fateful Michael start that we continue to bring up because it completely changes the outlook on his season from like a 3.8 erra to a 2.3 erra in in the course of one game. That completely changes the way that it looks on paper. But what’s the impact of Miles Michael has been? Overwhelmingly positive. I mean, it’s just you can go on Eric Fett’s had a couple of clunkers, but man, has he had some good ones, too. We know Libbyy’s been fantastic. Nick Palante, maybe you want to find a little bit more consistency to dial in from him, but this Cardinal rotation, I mean, he’s got to be, they’ve got to be outperforming even the expectations internally. They probably hoped it would look good, but let’s give Dusty Blake his flowers, too, for what they’re doing so far. I’m not crowning these guys yet, but come on. This Cardinals team is impressive and fun to watch right now, is it not? 3.56 is the starting rotation. Erra three and a half. That’s eighth in baseball. Here’s where they rank even better. Innings. The Cardinals rotation has thrown 265 and a third innings. That’s third in the league behind only the Royals and the Phillies. And the Royals have played an additional game, but they their rotation’s been unbelievable. They did just place 40% of it on the IIL on Saturday. So, we’ll see if that sustains without Lugo and Reagan. But the Cardinals have been a a rotation that is giving innings on a consistent basis. Again, even with a few of those that you could point out and say, “Well, this guy, well, he didn’t go very deep.” We’re just talking about relative to the rest of the league. I mean, the Cardinals are averaging over five and a half innings per start. And that’s not easy to do in the modern game. And it’s even less easy to do when you think about the handful of outings that haven’t gone well. But that just means everybody else is covering for those by Fetty going nine and a number of guys pitching into the eighth and going seven. Tonight, Greg goes six. I’m ranting a little bit, but it’s the only way I can think to talk about this game tonight is the Cardinals. I mean, they had the the Tigers basically dead to rights after the rain delay because they were already up 5 nothing. And I think the the moment you circle is the fifth inning where the Cardinals load the bases, but they don’t get another ball out of the infield the rest of that inning. Base load, nobody out. They score all the runs on the infield. Ground outs. Fielder’s choice where Mason win, I believe it was, slides in safely at home plate. Probably shouldn’t have gone home with that throw, but the the Cardinals don’t care. They’re just going to continue to pick you apart. Aronado hustling down the line to beat out a potential double play. Make sure another run scores. I mean, Aronado struggling. He moves down in the lineup to number six. We’ll see what version of him the Cardinals can find. Um, people were making kind of a lot of the quotes that he was giving earlier today. I was seeing those float around Twitter about the move down in the lineup and he’s basically saying, “Yeah, move me down. I mean, I’m not performing right now.” And I don’t really know uh I don’t really know, you know, when when when it’s going to come back. Maybe it doesn’t come back the the way that it has before. Like just some quotes that from him, if you read them in a certain light, you go, man, that’s kind of concerning to hear that. Um, one of the such quotes from John Denton, MLB.com. Um, this is from Nolan Aronado said he told Cardinal manager Ollie Marmal he should be moved down in the lineup. Like this is a guy who’s you may think about his confidence and be a little bit pessimistic, but I think that’s why you moved him by the way. I don’t know if that happens without Oronaro coming to Hall and going look dude I get it if you want to move me down. Which again, what does that say about his confidence in his game? Probably not a lot. What does it say about his like place as a teammate on this Cardinals roster? kind of a lot. He said, “We switched the lineup because the guys are playing well in front of me and the guys were hitting behind me. They should move up. There’s really nothing more to it than that.” People kind of criticizing I see in the comments Oliver Marl for not doing it of his own valition. Uh that’s just not the way it works. I was frankly a little surprised to see the move today. Not something that I think is crazy though. It’s it’s one of those things that uh you know hopefully jumpst starts the other guys, but if nothing else, it gives them the opportunity to hit with with guys like Brennan Donovan on base and Mason Win and Lars Nupar on base where right now, yeah, we’ve seen a few too many popups in key spots for Nolan Aronado. But I also don’t think that he’s necessarily just done at this point. Uh it’s just a Nolan Aronado is a roller coaster type of guy. you’re going to ride the highs and lows with him emotionally because he cares so much about his performance. Here was the quote that I was looking for from John Denton. Quote, on his struggles, Aronado says, quote, just play better. I don’t really have an answer. Just play better. Play more the way I think I’m capable of, but it’s been a minute since I felt like I could play the way I should. So, I don’t know if it’s coming back or not. That was kind of the quote where it was like, yikes. Like, that reads a little bit rough. Personally, my take, I wouldn’t read too much into it. That’s just Nolan Aronado being Nolan Aronado. like he’s a very intense guy and probably a little bit at times he gets too down on himself and I think that’s an instance of what’s going on right now. Um, somebody’s got to get in his ear and let him know, hey dude, your defense is still pacing this team with what you’re providing and and I think he knows that. But he’s also like going to tell you when he’s kind of poed it himself, he’s going to talk about it in very blunt terms the way that he did there. So, I I wouldn’t necessarily um read more into that than than than you should, but people certainly were kind of looking at that going, “Man, what’s going on with Aronado? He really sounds down on himself.” Yeah, he cares a lot about his performance. He wants to be better. But as as a general rule, I wanted to kind of talk about that for a couple minutes, but in the bigger picture, there’s a lot of positives going on with the Cardinals. Like, when you can pinpoint just a couple of the things and pick out and say, “Yeah, those are the things we’re worried about. Aronado, he’s now your number six hitter and he kind of feels like he’s down on his luck and it just doesn’t have that confidence about him. But again, it’s not like you wouldn’t hear that quote from Paul Goldmint, but Paul Goldmint and Aronado are very different cats. They’re very different guys from one another. And and so for Aronado to speak that way, I don’t think is indicative of like, oh, it’s over. Like the way that the comments are reacting, but like you can point to that. You can point to Gorman. You can point to Walker kind of not being up to par this year. The list is much longer of the things that are going really really favorably for the Cardinals and it might just be getting to the point where we go, are they just legit? Are they is this real? Is this sustainable? Does this have staying power for the Cardinals? You know, you look at all the areas in which they are excelling. Talked about the rotation numbers. Kind of curious what the numbers are for the bullpen strictly. It feels like they’re probably a top half bullpen right now. I’ll look at the ERA. I’m I’m doing this off the cuff. Um right in the middle. They’re 15th in bullpen RA at 3.87. And again, tonight they gave up a few runs late that just you didn’t care. You’re up 11 nothing. They went 11-4. It doesn’t matter. Um, so those are some, you know, it’s a group that largely is performing well because you can point to a week or so span where they were just absolutely not getting anybody out. And so for them to be a midpack bullpin by erra at this point, I think that’s pretty meaningful as far as what you’re getting out of that group in general. Uh, we can look offensively. The Cardinals are seventh in baseball in runs scored this year across MLB in OPS. They’re seventh. I mean, they are pretty consistently a top 10 offense right now. They are a a a top, you know, uh, what is it? Maybe borderline top 10 pitching staff. They are I have to I have to switch it from uh not prioritizing relief only. I want to see what they are overall. They’re 12th in RA overall, but they’ve been a top 10 starting rotation. like are the Cardinals just good and is this the way things are going to be? And then what’s the burden of proof? The conversation that will continue to ramp up. It’s going to replace the runway conversation in my opinion because runway is not really a thing like we could talk about it but what were the things that were runway at the beginning of the year? Walker playing, Gorman playing, Herrera catching, Liberator starting. Okay, let’s look at it. Well, Liberator is going to start because he’s been your statistical best starter. So, no duh, he’s going to be in the rotation. like there’s not like a proving ground anymore. Libbyy’s just that dude. That’s what he’s showing to be. Um but let’s think about well Herrera doesn’t really catch because he hits so good that it doesn’t matter. Like uh Pahz is is deserving of credit for the way he handles the pitching staff. It’s not as much about what Herrera can’t do as what PZ can do. I think that’s also a fair argument to make. Um but there’s just not a priority on the runway for Herrera to catch right now because they’re winning a bunch of games. It’s working the way that it’s working. And that kicks Herrera to DH, which kind of kicks Gorman out of the lineup more often. It kicks Walker out of the lineup more often. That Berles is hitting. Was Burles a a runway guy? Yeah, not really. But he’s getting it because he’s playing and playing well, so he should. It’s just one of those things where when’s the last time you saw Gorman and Walker in the same lineup? And has it ever happened like twice in a row? Probably not in a month. It’s just what it is right now. And I don’t think it’s wrong. So runway is kind of a figment of our imaginations at the moment. uh rightfully and the Cardinal are going to continue to, you know, look for ways to win these games and Ollie Marble is going to set things up that way. He’ll get Gorman in there when he can. He’ll get Walker in there when he can. But it’s not really this like daily runway edict that has to happen. It hasn’t happened in weeks. Find when that’s happened and count up the number of games where they’ve both been in the lineup. They haven’t been and they shouldn’t be right now. They they got to find ways to mix and match with the matchups and the lineups and nobody has an issue with that. Right. Okay, great. What’s going to replace the runway conversation is what do you do when the Cardinals get better than they even thought they could be? Because when you lowered the payroll and you basically sat on your hands on the off season, instead of like plugging in $10 million free agents to block Liberator from the rotation, to block, you know, guys like Walker, then you can go down to Gorman and even more like Berles and and others from getting opportunity in the lineup. Yeah, you even tried to trade Aronado and that didn’t work out. But they didn’t add because they were like, well, we want to save money first of all, but also we want to find out about these guys. And so they didn’t do the normal thing of adding players that would block their internal options that they’re afraid to use because in what year that you’re claiming you’re going to try to contend, would it be defensible on paper to put Liberator in the rotation to begin the year? No. Cardinals fans wouldn’t have stood for that necessarily. They’d say, “Oh, this again.” But if they set the scene and lowered your expectations by saying, “Eh, it’s going to be this way. Get ready.” They internally couldn’t necessarily beat their chest about how actually they’re going to be better than people think. They did that anyway. They they they spoke out. Guys like Brandon Donovan had some, you know, bold quotes at winter warm-up and Ollie Marmal throughout the spring. We heard, you know, John Mo say he thinks people are are going to be surprised by the team that they could could still feel and they’re hopeful they can be better than people expect. but they couldn’t really be too specific about that because they didn’t necessarily know it would go this well. But with a lower payroll, the Cardinals are finding that, hey, they actually do have some talent on this roster and in this organization. And so what happens though when that talent outperforms the middling, you know, 83 win expectation that I had to begin the season and I was higher than Vegas was on the Cardinals and I was higher than a lot of people were on the Cardinals saying 83 84 wins. Well, they’re going to win more than that if they continue playing this way. But what does the team look like in August and September? Does a does a trade deadline change the look of this team? Because in February, I would have told you that Ryan Hley is not on this team August 1st and throughout March and April, I would have probably said the same thing. I don’t know what to say about it on May 19th because teams that are a game back and and potentially in first place as they move forward here into the summer don’t trade their closers usually and when they do you can think of it not going well like Josh her being dealt by the Brewers a few years ago kind of tank the whole mojo that that they had and the Cardinals were able to sneak up on him and and win. I believe that was 2022 when that happened. So, like I don’t really know what the answer ends up being, but they got, as we said, a lot of those short-term assets that you would think expiring assets turn into valuable commodities at the deadline. What do the Cardinals do? Do they keep the band together or are they going to still have to play the business angle of this and thinking long term? I would say if Heim Bloom had already been installed as the Pobo, you might see some really some really gnarly trades made that anybody hoping to see a contending club be held together may be disappointed in. John Moak’s still running this ship. You think he wants to sell on a first place team in his last trade deadline? You’re out of your mind. I think I don’t know for sure. Cardinals fans, what do you want to see? A lot of Cardinals fans are very savvy to the business side of it. Helley’s not on this team next year. I’m just telling you, I don’t think he’s going to be. I don’t think they’re going to extend him. I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t. I’m just saying they won’t. That’s not the way I expect them to spend money if they spend at all. So, doesn’t that mean you have to trade him if he’s the most valuable pitcher on the market potentially in July? Not if you’re in first place. Not if you’re 10, 12 games above 500, regardless of what place you’re in. That’s what’s interesting to me and that’s what we’ll continue to talk about. But we might just be talking about winning baseball all summer long. They did it on the road trip. No more of this. Can’t win on the road. Now they’re beating a team that came into the day with the most wins in baseball. 11 to4. Cardinals beat the Tigers on Monday. Cardinals fans, in the comments, let me know your thoughts on the proceedings. And make sure to hit that subscribe button. We bring you Cardinals content every single day except for when we don’t. But that was rare example. Had my 10-y year anniversary over the weekend. So, I did give one episode, but we were a little more sporadic than usual. Um, we we’ll keep it rolling though this week as the Cardinals continue their series against the Tigers in a home stand where maybe the fans will get back to Bush by the time Memorial Day weekend rolls around. Let me know in the comments your thoughts. Make sure to like and subscribe before you get out of here. But that’s going to do it for this edition of the show. Appreciate you guys as always for listening and we’ll talk to you next time on Be Shafe Daily. Peace.
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals THUMPING the best team in MLB on Monday as the Cards beat the Tigers 11-4 to maintain this incredible run they’re on recently.
Sonny Gray was outstanding and continued a trend of his this season in the way that he rebounds from rough outings by showing his best work in the follow-up.
The offense stuck with it and put together a late barrage against the Detroit bullpen and old friend John Brebbia after a rain delay.
Is the play on the field turning up the heat on this idea that the Cardinals may not be able to afford to sell off contracts at this trade deadline the way many expected we would see coming into the year? This 2025 season could be one to remember, come what may.

When do we start giving Mo credit for building this team? Even if they tail off, they have PROVEN that they have a great young nucleus for this year and the future. We should all be praising Mo….and yet he got booed in his final opening day. I still think that was a pathetic showing from a fanbase that is supposed to be knowledgeable.
We ARE here to stay. Even if baseball happens and we end up hitting a losing streak or two. We are GOOD.
Jeeez what a storm. I hope everybody is safe. The catch by Lars reaching into the stands. Team playing aggressive and well. Thinking Detroit is due to come down a peg or two, and the Cardinals are going to continue to rise. Arenado could drop even further in the lineup and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. Nice to see a strong rebound from Sonny. And to top it all off, Miami walked off the Cubs. 😃Go Cardinals. Loving this team.
Have to say, I am pleasantly surprised and happy to have been wrong about this team. Just hope it keeps up.
What is going on with Ivan? He's been incredible this season. Ps im posting this at the beginning of the podcast so if you cover it, my bad.
4 games behind the mlb lead, and its almost flag day
Libertore has been a total shock for me. Each outing I think this is the one where he will get shelled and he keeps proving me wrong.
Boys are whooping some arse I said 88 wins and im thinking could be 95
I believe they are.
Dude they want Walker out there defensively over burley. He went from a defensive liability to I would say being somewhat reliable
Brant Brown 2028. We are 1st or 2nd in batting average, hits, doubles(a low key very telling stat imo) and opposite field hits. We are 3rd in OBP, 6th in runs(despite playing in a pitchers park with cooler weather thus far), and 9th in slug. Dude has taken a pretty young lineup with almost no expectations and immediately changed our approach and turned us into an offensive force. What a fantastic brand of offensive baseball.
That swing by Walker last night was by far his best of the year. He's gotta focus on pounding the ball to right center and shooting line drives the other way and he'll find his swing again. And if he starts swinging it watch out.
I was just telling my brother on Saturday night that Oli knew this team was exciting, it wasn't just lol service. He's a sharp baseball mind.
Hopefully they can take down another ace. Tough game up next.
Herrera went 2 for 5, or .400, so technically it was a down game for him.
I think you trade away from that starting rotation. Fedde or mikolas and Matz. The dodgers will overpay right now. It will hurt but building to make a serious run next year it more important I feel. But definitely tough questions.
These guys are definitely a pleasant surprise. The interesting situation is going to be the deadline. Let’s assume they can maintain this level of play up until that point……Do they still maintain the stance that eyes are on the future, or do they make “now” moves?
Your analysis is consistent and accurate. I can't do "fanboy" analysis with any of the teams I follow and you do it well. Thank you.
There's a lot working well right now, but over time, will the lack of swing and miss from half the starting rotation as well as a lack of HR power impact their ability to keep up the results?
What’s game last night! We had planned on coming up for these two back when the schedule came out because my friends are from Detroit but I was starting to get nervous after the first month. So glad we are coming on strong now! One more game tonight before the drive back
Great run,Sukbal will be a real test,on tuesday.
What a road trip, another great broadcast.
Good stuff on cubbie sch.
This team is fun. I bought tickets for tonight’s game. I really hope the fans start to come back because even though the front office might not deserve it, but this roster deserves to see and hear their fans cheer them on. Pumped to see how they do against Skubal tonight. Good stuff as always Brenden
If the Dodgers looked like world beaters. I would be more on the side of make trades at the deadline, even if in contention… but they don't. IMO the cardinals are 1 starting pitcher away from being a legit top 5 team in baseball… the only 2 players that seem expendable to me right now are Gorman and Burelson.
Walker was put in the outfield before the rain delay
I can't wait to see the Cubs come to town. It's time to go back to Busch Stadium.
If they are in it at the deadline I can see them holding onto Helsley and Fedde. I think Bloom would be ok walking away with draft picks and the chance to make the playoffs by not dealing them off. I would try to extend Matz to a "team friendly deal" in it or not. A crafty left hander who can float between the bullpen and starting is quite useful.
If this is real you can point to the Reds, Mets double header sweep as their awakening. Run differential is looking so much better now.
If Mo is a part of this team…. I’ll never watch baseball again
I like this Trio Donovan Herrera Contreras and the good contribution from Nootbar Burleson and Victor Scott….The Cardinals were always a good hitting team the pitching is making them so powerful right now ! The Cardinals are Way over defensively than the Overrated Mets,,,,
