🔴LIVE 🔴Philadelphia Phillies vs Oakland Athletics/May 23/Major League Baseball/MLB the show 25
just about ready to go. Our starting pitcher in this one, Luis Severino. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Bryson stop leading things off and takes a [Applause] strike. Fouled off left side. That’s down and in. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and one gone. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter. And time now for the Phillies lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense, Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. Two out, space is empty. fast ball for a strike. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. Two down, nobody on one fouled off. Two and two. And that just misses. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Severino kicks steals. Liner base hit and that keeps the inning going. Big knock there to keep the inning alive and an opportunity to put something in the gap and give the Phillies the lead. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Let’s go. Come on. Severino throws to first. Harper’s back at a dive. Harper leads off first with two down to the inning. That one finds the corner. One ball, one strike. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. [Music] Two outs just off the inside edge. Hoo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. In the air, right side. Rooker under it. Let’s go. Nabs it. And that is that. Philly strand one. And now the Athletics offense gets its first shot here. No score. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound in this one, Ranger Suarez. Well, Boo, maybe a little pedestrian there in terms of the erra numbers. you to see if he’s able to be consistent in this one. Now a chance for Max Schum. [Music] Swinging a foul straight back. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck. Kepler settles under it. One up, one down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. This team collectively, Chris, the bat-to ball skills are outstanding. They lead the league in total hits coming in. Yeah, Boog. I I wouldn’t want to be a pitcher who’s got to face this lineup. I mean, every spot in the order dangerous really professional hitters that walk to the dish. I mean, they just don’t give away at bats. Ton of contact. You know, these fielders behind this pitcher, they better be on their toes because the ball is going to be in play a whole lot. Yeah. When the ball is in play, at least from an offensive perspective, eventually something good can happen. And now the count is even. swaying at a ball popped in the air and it drops in. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Handled that down and in breaking ball very well. I saw the break early coming from the other side and just let it get deep enough and dropped the barrel on it at the very last moment. At the plate, Tyler Sodstrom. That’s too low. Ball one. Man at first, one away. Here goes the runner. Base hit. Throw into third. He’s in there. Backto-back base hits showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Runners at the corners here. One away. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Right through there for a strike. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. First and third, one down. fouled off down the right side. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Ground ball right side could be two to second for one and that’s two. Well, the second base made that one look easy. Great feed to the shortstop. Shortstop completes the play. They get out of a jam and they end the inning. And we’re back. New inning getting started. Here’s Nicholas Castanos. This is a batter who clearly performs better in day games. I don’t know why, but his numbers generally back it up. Castanos hitting fifth in today’s lineup. a former first round pick back in 2010. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one swing and a tapper that rolls foul. [Applause] That just misses ball two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Gets a piece and stays alive. Severino foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Max Kepler at the plate. misses outside and that’s ball one. Come on. One down. Base is empty. Fast ball for a strike. Rusty Valentine umpiring behind the plate in this one. He has what you might call a tall strike zone both at the letters and down below the knees. Yeah. And I’m sure that helps a lot of pitchers we see today who like to work up down trying to change eye levels and swing paths. This one swung on and hit well way back there. Out of here. And the Phillies take the lead. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. And here comes Alec Bow. And there’s a foul ball. One out. Base is empty. Out towards right center field. Rooker puts it away for the out. Two down. Batting eight centeriel Brandon Marsh steps to the plate. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Batting over 300 so far this month. Just missed. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. There’s the strike. Battling here as he fouls it away. swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. The Phillies get one by way of the long ball. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Pitch is in there. Strike one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Hit hard on the ground and up the middle. Base hit. off to a good start with a leadoff nine. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like [Applause] that. No outs, runner at first. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. He’s been showing off some pop lately. Three homers already in this series. And there’s one away. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. Gioella to the plate. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. [Applause] Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. And that’s through there for a strike. The other way. Dives for the bag. Got him. Double play. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. We played two full. It’s the Phillies one and the A’s nothing. Onto the third inning. Here’s the Phillies catcher, Raphael Maron. Severino back to work. fought off foul. Swing get a ball popped up. Schuman, one down. Now batting second base. So, the Philly batting order turns over and stepping in is the speedy Bryson Stock at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. And that one is inside. Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire’s strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Liner and this could be trouble. Now he’ll turn for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay, the tag, and he’s out trying for three. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Two outs. Base is empty. Trey Turner now. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Next offering is fouled back and that one wrapped foul. [Music] Next offering upstairs bows it back with two strikes. Two down. Nobody on fights it off. He’ll see another check swing on the 2- two appeal to first and he held up. Two outs. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. You can stomach a two out walk to certain players, but with his speed, this guy out there on the base pass, it could turn into two or three bases. Tap foul at the plate. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way. So the hitter can focus on the pitch. Strike him out. Got him looking. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. One left for Philadelphia, but they hold a one- nothing lead. As we go to the last of the third, here’s the center fielder, JJ Blade. In for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And fouled off. Kicks and deals. And that one is downstairs. One and two to count. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. And it’s even up. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too, too. He’s already seen the curveball couple of times in this at bat. So, might have it timed up and ready for it. And that’s downstairs and outside. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. [Applause] 3-2 now. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Johnny Pareda will hit next. That one finds the corner. And that’s strike one. That one is absolutely belted. This one looks like trouble. Lead runner around second. Leed headed for the plate. He scores to tie it up. Big RBI for him right there. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing. Nice balance and weight transfer. And he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Now it’s the second baseman, Max Schuman. Late swing, fouled off inside. Just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. Foul ball still a one and two count. Runner at second. Nobody out. That’s off the mark. Two balls, two strikes. Good job to fight that one off. Swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. Gets him one away on a drop third strike and the runner holds. Well, obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone by the time it got to the plate and people at home watching are thinking, “What’s he swinging at?” But I’ll tell you, some of the break guys snap off these days is just devastating. It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that’s going to end up. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. That one misses. And that is ball one. And another ball. Well, this is a little tough for the hitter in the back of the mind. You’re wondering with first base open, am I going to get a pitch to hit? Got to stay back. Let your hands work. Stay in the middle of the field. Tyler Soderstrom in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And ball four to a board. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. designated hitter. So now the DH spot Tyler Soderstrom one for one with a single so far at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play. Boog para on second. Wilson at first. One gone. Lifted in the air down the left side. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away. Now batting right. So here’s the cleanup hitter Brent Rooker. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. That’s a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Hammered on the line. Base hit. Throw in holds the lead runner at third. So it’ll be bases loaded and two gone. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Two outs, bases full. Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. That one hooked. [Applause] Fouled. Base is loaded. Two down. [Applause] Check swing. He went too far. And it’s a strike. Swaying at a line drive. Base hit to left field. One runs in. Save. And it’s three to one. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for [Applause] itself. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Ranger Suarez gives way and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Christopher Sanchez on a pitch out of the pen here. pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Next to hit, Nick Curts. He’s 0 for one. First offering and it just misses. just missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, two outs, and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Let’s go to baby. Let’s [Applause] go. Ground ball left side. That ends the inning. and stops things from getting out of hand. Three runs for him here and they move ahead on to inning number four. It’s the A’s three and the Phillies won. And we’re back out of the fourth and Kyle Schwarber will come up. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Justin Sterner, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Otanz getting loose as well. Next pitch is outside and that’s ball two. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning, don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And a seed into center. That’s a base hit. And a good start to the inning. All over that one right there. It’s hard to hit a baseball much better than that. And even a lot of professional hitters aren’t able to reach an exit vo of 114 mph. Tell you what, that’s a very impressive swing at the bat. Nick Castanos at the plate now. Struck out swinging his first time. Fouled off. He was [Applause] late with the tying run at the plate. Top half of inning number four. Up and in. And it’s one and one. And that one fouled off. Here’s a one-two. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Now batting left. Now batting Max Kepler. He’s already homerred in this game. And that is out of play. Schwarber leads off first with one away. Right side. Rooker sizing this one up. makes the grab. Two down. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. And now it’s Alec Bow. Flyed to right his first time. And that’s ball one. Deep drive down the line. Foul ball. Well, he saw that change up really well. Just a little early. Still barreled it as you see. Home run distance. Just couldn’t keep it fair. Swings through that one for strike two. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. The hitters got to look down in the zone. Two outs. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Good eye in that spot. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. So, they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the A’s three and the Phillies won. bottom of the inning. Here’s Gioella. Third base, Gioella. That’s off the mark. Ball one. You know, these A’s doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. And that one way outside. Two and one. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Nice change up. This is JJ Blade. He reached out a walk his first time. JJ Blade. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That’s in there. And that’s strike two. And they’ll do it again. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now here’s the A’s catcher. Johnny Pareda doubled his first time up and that drops in for a strike. Makes a sliding stop over to first and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Nothing doing there for the A’s and the score stays three to one. pitching. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Justin Sterner. He’s been so good against lefties. Sterner. And here is Brandon March, 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Sterner 61 righty. He features a four seam fast, a curb, a slider, and he works in a sinker. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Line drive and this might be trouble around first heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And digging in for Philadelphia, Raphael Marawn. First time up was a pop out in the dirt and no movement on the bases. It’s ball one. That one the other way down the line and it’s fouled. Tying run at the plate. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] fouls it off. Still one and two [Applause] and a swing and a miss. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. This is Bryson stop. One for two. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble. You see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk them, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Rooker on his way over. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Now batting short stop Trey Turner. Trey Turner at the plate. He’s 0 for one. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. There’s the strike of the knees. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Fouled off down the right side. Marsh at second with two down on the ground to the left. Urella to first in time. That’s out number three. Philly strand one and they still trail it here 3 to one. back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound. Jose Ruiz just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Back to the top of the order now. Max Schuman now at the plate. Bull for two in this one. And that drops in for a strike. You know, these athletics, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. All right, let’s go. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Man at first. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. The emmo for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average. Not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Well, that’s why it’s a team. And when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. Stirring in the Phillies bullpen. Tanner Banks up and throwing. in for a strike and it’s nothing in two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. dominating strike out there on just three pitches. And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you. If he’s hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone, sometimes he bats over before it really begins. [Music] Solder in the box again, takes the strike. Let’s go. Swinging a miss as he was late. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another Three to go. Two and two in the dirt. The throw to second is offline. Schuman into scoring position on the wild pitch. And there goes the double play possibility. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Let’s go. Ground ball right side and foul ball. The A’s looking to add another. Some heat there at 98 m anph. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Brent Rooker, a former first round pick. And he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. On the ground. And that’s a fair ball coming home. He will score. Fires the second too late into second with a double. And that was hard hit, man. He just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. Nice curveball for a strike. Swings and misses. That is strike two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. And a curb misses outside. Stays alive. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. A’s get one on the RBI double. It’s now 4-1. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Mason Miller. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. Bryce Harper to the plate. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. [Applause] Outside low. One and0. And a big swing and a miss. Swinging a drive deep right field. Out of here. A home run off the foul pole. His ninth homer of the year. And they cut into the lead. It’s 4-2. Fans expect Bryce Harper to do something special every time he comes to the dish. And he didn’t disappoint there. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something. But really, it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Now, here is Kyle Schwarber. That one in triple digits. Swung on. Belted way back there. Hits the fence safely into second. He’s got a double. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing of the bat. Now a huge atbat in this game coming up. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now the right fielder Nick Castanos who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. tying run at the plate. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. And that’s in for a strike. fought off foul. [Applause] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. Schwarber stands at second with no outs. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Kurts on the move. Can’t get there. This one lands foul. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. and a swing and a miss. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. No, when you follow up a tripledigit fast ball with a nasty change up, pretty much every time the hitter’s going to be in trouble. That was the plan. Get him to sit dead red on the fast ball and then just make him look foolish with the off speed stuff. And now for the Phillies, Max Kepler a little out front there as he swings through it. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. in there. Got him. Looking for the K. And they’re down to their last out. Oh, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes. Just put the ball in play somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Last chance for the Phillies. Here’s the third baseman, Alec Bow. Swing and a miss and 102 on the radar gun in the dirt. [Applause] They’re down to their final strike. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. One strike away. That misses and the count is two and two. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off speed pitch and a swing and a miss and that is the ball game. Ninegame losing streak. No one wants to get to double digits in that column. So to come out today, break it, win, get that good feeling back again. Go into the clubhouse, turn up the music, enjoy it. Everything tastes better, you’re going to sleep better, and you come back out tomorrow and you get another win. And your final 42. The A’s hang on to win it. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
