🔴LIVE 🔴Philadelphia Phillies vs Oakland Athletics/May 25/ Baseball Envivo/MLB the show 25
So, it’s about set now and on the mound for the A’s in this one, Jeffrey Springs. What do you look for here? Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. All right, ready to get underway. Now it’s the shortstop Trey Turner. There’s a strike at the knees and we are [Applause] underway. Turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. The pitch swings here and blasts one left field. Bangs off the wall, makes the turn and heads for second. And now a runner moves into scoring position as we look for the first run of the ball game. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position and digging in for Philadelphia. Bryce Harper. First pitch just misses man at second. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. [Applause] No outs. Runner on second. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That one missed. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield headed for the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Singi maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Two balls, no strikes to count. Nobody out. Runner at first. Just off the outside edge and the count is three and one. popped up. Foul territory behind the plate. Langelers makes the grab. One away. And time now for the Phillies lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense. Singy. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter, they’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. And now it is JT Real Muto. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting Schuman over to Aras one. What a double play that was. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and on the mound for Philadelphia in this one, Christopher Sanchez. Singi, he’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind him, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, this one’s into the outfield. Could be extra bases around first and hustling for second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Applause] Now the number two hitter, Brent Rooker. And that’s in there for strike one. One of my favorite stats all time. 1997, the Hall of Famer Craig Bigio played in all 162 games for the Astros on Astro Turf and he never hit into a double play. The 01 on the ground right side over to first in time. One gone bottom half of the first and time now to check out the A’s lineup. They’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the swinging a ground ball up the middle. Sto in time now. Two away as they get a run across. And here is Shay Langalers. Outfield playing very deep, not wanting anything over their heads. That’s to third to first. And that is the inning. One run on one base hit, no errors and no one left. We go on to inning number two. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Second inning set to go. And now for the Phillies. Alec Bow Springs back to work. Bone goes 6′ 5 in. 28 years old. a former first round pick back in 2018. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Umpire. And behind the plate for us today, Boog, is Mike Filillmore. And he is a good one. He’ll reward pitches on the edges a little bit, but the main thing is he doesn’t keep you guessing. Once he established that a pitch is a strike, it stays that way. The one-1 is fouled off. Yeah, Philillmore kind of I don’t know, you’d say maybe an umpire’s umpire, but really consistent, very fair. Close, but called a ball. And that’s ball two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. He takes it on his own. One up, one down. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. This is Bryson stop. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris First pitch doesn’t find the zone. just missed. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. One down. Base is empty. There’s the swing and a miss. struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft rounds. Take a seat.” And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Here’s the left fielder, Weston Wilson. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Pitch misses. One and one. And that drops in for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. And that’s outside. ripped into right field. Base hit and that extends the inning. Big knock there to keep the inning alive and an opportunity to put something in the gap and give the Phillies the lead. So up next, Johan Rojas. Ball one there. Next pitch is outside. Outside corner. There’s the strike. And that one fouled off. Wilson the runner at first with two gone. Struck him out looking. So one hit is all they get. We go to the bottom of inning number two. All tied 1-1. Bottom of the second. Now the A’s designated hitter, Miguel Anduhar. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. [Music] Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. There’s a 1-1 and there’s a foul ball. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss on the ground. Boom. Throws to first. leadoff man retired here in the second base. [Music] Here’s Luis Orias. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Fouled off down the right side. This one in the air and a foul ball. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a played appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Foul ball still 0 and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Backed off the plate that time. bows it off. Still one and two. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Castanos gets under it and makes the grab. Two away now. batting seven. Third base Max Schuman up next for the A’s. Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. Tied up here in the early going. There’s a strike. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Swings and misses. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. A’s go quickly and quietly there. Score remains tied 1-1. Trey Turner at the plate. This splits between April and May there. Swinging a foul straight back in the air left field down the line and that’s a foul ball. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. You’re a little late. Opposite field not. left field way back there and one hops the wall around first heading for two and he’s got his second double of the game. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. [Music] Runner in scoring position. No outs. Bryce Harper stands in for the Phillies. Fought off [Applause] foul. Man at second. And that is out of play. That misses one and two. The count. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in, so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Kyle Schwarber stands in for the Phillies. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Turner rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score and the Phillies take the lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s two to one. First pitch swing in. Went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. One down. Here’s Nicholas Castillanos. One for one with a single so far. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Around second is Schwarber coming home. Play at the plate. Got it. A lot of real estate to cover on that play defensively. A long throw to the cut off man and then a lot of ground to make up as well on the relay, but an excellent job of execution and getting that out at the dish as he tried to make it home all the way from first base. JT Real Mutil steps [Applause] in. Pitch misses. One and0. Man on second. Two down. That just misses. Two and0. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Luis Severino up and loosening in the pen. Hogland also getting ready. Two. Swinging a miss as he was late. Well, he came right at him right there. Challenged him with the two fast ball. Not sure exactly what he was looking for, but got to imagine that’s a confidence booster on the mound. You’re in that hitter’s head a little bit. Ru at second. Two down. This one in the air center field. Clark has a beat on it, makes the catch, and that’ll do it, but the RBI single pushes across a run, and it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts, that misses the zone. And that’s ball one. just missed that one down the line and that hits off the base. It’s in and out of his glove and he’s into second with nobody out. Well, that may end up being an at bat. we go back to later on when this game is over. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. And here’s the rookie center fielder Denzel Clark trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. Just missed. The one swings through that one for strike one. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. Next offering misses. Two and one. Kurts at second with nobody out. That’s ripped into the outfield. Brings it in. Grounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Now batting number five, Jacob Wilson getting ready to hit. First time up, he let off the bottom of the first with a double and then scored. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball, hoping to keep that runner at third. That pitch gets the corner and that’s strike one. The shorts stop takes a ball and delivers outside. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake to the left side, but it is well fouled. One away with a runner at third. Here we go. That’s a little bit low. That’s a really good take. Brent Rooker in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. This one in the air. Turner hauls it in. Two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Brent Rooker will hit next. Grounded out his first time. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. That one almost got him. Wait for your right side hard hit. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. The A’s strand one and our score remains 2-1. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Luis Severino. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Alec Bow stands in for the Phillies. Grounded out his first time up. Late swing fouled off on the corner for a [Applause] strike and a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. And now Bryson stopped. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. Ground ball right side dive. And he’s got it from his knees. The throw nicely done for the Owl. Look at how he dives right there. is able to pop up to both knees. Not enough time to get to his feet, but he threw a cannon across the diamond to get the runner. Now it’s going to be Weston Wilson. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. One out and a runner at second. Top half of inning number four. And that one lifted in the air center field. Clark right there to make the grab. And there’s two down. Now batting the center fielder Johan Rojas. Johan Rojas now at the plate. His first at bat was a strikeout. Pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good. If he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And a foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position to third and a foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out that ends the frame. One hit, one left to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Phillies two and the A’s one and welcome back to the ballpark. And now Tyler Soderstrom. on the ground to third. Slings it across. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting catcher. Here’s the catcher to hit Shay Langalers. [Applause] And that skips in the dirt. Some bullpen action for Philadelphia. Carlos Hernandez up and throwing. Suarez, a lefty warming up as well, trying to hold a one-run lead. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And another ball. hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Christopher Sanchez departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming up. We’ll be back in a minute. Now a right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Carlos Hernandez. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One down, runner at first. Here’s Miguel and Duhar 0 for one so far. And that one upstairs. The next offering misses and the count is two and0. Way to lay off that pitch down. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. Going back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting second base. Still two down now. And here is Luis Urias. Flyed to right his first time. Right now they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. Just missed. Let’s go. The next pitch misses and the count now two and nothing. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Next pitch is outside and it’s 3 and 0. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Next offering is in for a strike. Langeliers off of first with two away. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Are you kidding me? makes the grab and that’s the inning. And we’re back. Here’s Trey Turner. Trey Turner Severino in his ninth season, 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. That one misses ball one. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Rooker puts it away. One down. Now batting first base Harper. Bryce Harper to the plate. [Music] That’s in for a strike. One out. Base is empty. Check. Swing. No appeal. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Now batting designated hitter. Two down. Base is empty. Kyle Schwarber the next to hit. First round pick out of Indiana back in 2014. Fast ball for a strike. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. The one- one is fouled off. Man, this has been a real important inning in relief. I mean, so far they’ve been doing a great job holding that deficit at one. Next pitch misses. Now two and two. Sorry. And they’ll do it again. That one ripped back there. Pulls it in on the warning track. We head to the bottom of the fifth at the plate. Max Schum. [Music] Hernandez back to work. Swings through that one out in front that time. That’s to third and it gets by him. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Yeah, the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Carlos Hernandez won’t go any further and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Ranger Suarez on the pitch here. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Doubled his first time up. There’s the strike. [Music] Late with the swing there with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Rudder at first with no outs here. Going to count one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Hit hard on the ground to short. Turner to second to first. Double play. Nicely done. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. and they make tough plays. Look simple. And now the center fielder, Denzel Clark. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat, getting that first hit at the big league level and misses inside. Looking to get the tying run on base. Strike one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Swing and a miss as he was out front. [Music] And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. [Applause] Now batting number five, Jacob Wilson getting ready to hit. One for two. [Applause] and that finds the mark on the outside corner. Strike one. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit, but you got to stay within yourself. Swanging a miss and it’s nothing in two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach way inside. Gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. step off. Throw to first. Clark back in on a dive. Clark leads off first with two down to the inning. Out to short. They take the force out. That ends the inning. No runs on two hits, no errors and a runner left. Five innings complete. It’s the Phillies two and the A’s one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Nick Castanos at the plate now. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Gunnar Hogland getting ready to go. Sterner also throwing and that one fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And down on strikes he goes. And that’s the first out. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Here’s JT Real Muto for two in this one. Right through there for a [Applause] strike. That one’s in there. That is strike two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Now the third baseman, Alec Bow and first offering is fouled off. Severino fast ball for a strike. And there’s a ball. bounce to the left side, tosses to first and the Phillies are set down in order. Nothing across here this half. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Phillies two and the A’s one. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Jordan Romano. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Rooker in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. off to a good start with a leadoff knock. [Applause] Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. Couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it, and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Now the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. That’s a strike. with the winning run at the plate here. The home team trying to pull it out. Swinging a ground ball. Nice stop. Throw to first. It’s there and that’s a great play. Couple of pitches and a quick out. catcher Shay Langalers. Shay Langalers will hit next. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. Swing and a miss, and it’s 0 and two. A little anxious, a little aggressive early in the count. Too much for me. Out to short. Turner with the throw to first. The A’s down to their final out. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. Partner Miguel Anduhar now at the plate trying to deliver as the hero. And the first pitch misses for ball one right through there for a strike. So the tying run at second and a count one and two. count. Let’s go. Romano is just one strike away. Swang and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Tying run is in to score from second. The throw to second is offline. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Now a move being made at second base. The A’s bring on a pinch runner, Logan Davidson. He’s the potential winning run. So they’re hoping he can score in a base hit. So digging in, Luis Urias. He’s been a great free agent sign. First offering and it just misses. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. Highfly ball out towards left field. That’s back there. Gone. Ball game. He’ll touch them all and they walk it off. [Applause] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard, you’re creating the most pressure-p packed scenario, and what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing of the bat. Nice win for the and your final 42. The A’s hang on to win it for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
