🔴LIVE🔴 Kansas City Royals vs Cincinnati Reds | MLB 2025 Full Game Highlights | May 27 | EN VIVO

Hello baseball fans and welcome inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Cincinnati Reds going up against the Kansas City Royals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. just about ready to go. And our pitcher tonight, Michael Waka. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game. and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. He’ll do it himself. And the first out of the game is an easy one. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances, Chris. They had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustments. So if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. One out. Base is empty. That one finds the zone. And that is strike two. Ball one there. Really good take especially with two strikes. Not close with that one. Two and two outside. Two strikes. [Music] Fights it off. He’ll see another the wind and the pitch on the ground to third and that chance handled. Zips it to first. Two quick outs in the top of the first here tonight. Batting third. The shorts stop. Ellie Dea Cruz. Two outs. Base is empty. Ellie Dea Cruz will hit next. just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some brun and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two out space is empty. That ball’s foul. Finished him. [Applause] Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it [Music] again. The one, two. Good eye in that spot. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. We got full count. [Music] Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Yan. Ellie looking to steal pitching for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. I think that steel kind of sets the tone not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. Got him swinging. So it’s no runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. And now the Royals will get their first shot in a scoreless ball game. back here at Kaufman Stadium. And today’s starting pitcher, Andrew Abbott, having a pretty ridiculous season so far. Singy. Yeah, you see there with the sub two erra. Very dependable guy and he’s been pretty much lights out so far this season. So, you know, when a guy like this takes the mound boo, I’m expected to watch him get into a rhythm quickly and just move through a ball game. Sometimes you can see some big strikeouts. Other times, it’s hard to even know he’s there because the innings go so quickly. Jonathan India leading things off and takes a strike. [Music] Next offering is foulback. [Music] going and chew now and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got to be careful here. This is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone. Next pitch is downstairs. Oh, two curve right there. Hitter kind of expects that. And good job of just showing that confidence and trying to get back into this count. One, two, bottom of the first. The pitch swings through for the K. Pulled the string on the change up. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Inside just missed. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Fouls one off. Two and two. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. And there’s the ball to third. Espion here tonight. An efficient start to the home first. Two away. And here now the lineup for the Royals. This is not a team that’s had much success driving the baseball so far this year. They have to rely on stringing hits together as opposed to scoring a lot of runs on homers, doubles, and triples. So, it’s hard to bunch runs together and that’s exhausting when your team is at the bottom of the league and slugging percentage and how much it takes Boo for you to put together a rally and put together a big inning. Just a difficult uh thing to do consistently over a long season. So somehow someway somebody’s going to have to find some power in this lineup so that they can have some easier wins and enjoy this season a little bit more. And foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Just off the inside edge. Swinging a foul straight back. Two down to and a foul ball. He stays alive. stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. That misses the zone and the count is filled up. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. So he battled through a long at bat and earned himself a hit. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game. But all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. First inning and already up to 23 pitches. That one the other way. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Royals leave one. Scoreless after one. Top of the second and now it’s Gavin Liel number two Gavin Waka a righty that throws with power more than 100 career wins on the mound and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Iowa that’s in there and it’s one and one left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. Next offering is down low. Two and one. [Music] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. And in foul ground, he pulls it down. One out. Batting six. The first baseman number seven, Spencer Steer digs in now. Right through there for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting seven, the right fielder number 30. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Stevenson. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Benson off of first with two away. Pickoff throw and he’s back in there. Two outs to the right side. India tosses to first. Third out and that ends the frame. One hit, one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. No score. Bottom half of inn number two. Down to third base. Mel Garcia. Garcia. Abbott back to work. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] And that one is inside ball one. [Applause] And there’s a foul ball. One and two here. And that skips in the dirt. On the ground on the run, throw to first and it beats him. What a play. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Here’s Mark Cana. [Music] And that’s in there for strike one. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. Just missed. One and one. And it is two and one. That’s right. just missed. [Music] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Drew stands in. Drew Waters. [Applause] Rudder takes off and that one pulled foul. Man at first, one away. Let’s do it. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And next up for the Royals, Michael Massie. Step off. Throw to first. Back in safe. Really close. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Let’s go. And another [Applause] [Music] ball right side. Benson sizing this one up. And that is that. So, one left for Kansas City. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan. We haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon. Yeah, I think so, Boo. I mean, everyone looking and wondering when they’re going to stop play. It definitely feels close. Strike two. [Applause] chases in the dirt. Slider there gets him one away on a drop third strike. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement, and that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the brake and got him to swing over the top. TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. Chopped to the right side takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. Now batting third base Santiago Espol at the plate. Santiago Espino grounded out his first time. That one hit to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that home half of the third coming up. No score. back here in Kansas City as we go to the last of the third. And the batter now Freddy Fine [Applause] going. And that one fouled off. [Music] And a swing and a miss. Decay is his third of the game. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very location, but he found a way to just get it by him. India the next to hit takes ball one. Just missed. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. That to right. Benson calls it in two away. Now batting the shortstop, Bobby Witz Jr. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. He’s 0 for one. Strike on the inside corner. 01’s the count. That one out to right. Benson on his way over and that’ll do it. Nothing doing here this half. Three innings complete. We’re tied nothing nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the short stop, Ellie Dea Cruz. De Cruz. Looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one. It’s coming down pretty good. Yeah, it is. And it’s not too bad yet, but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this. So, keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well. And the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit. It’s in and out of his glove. Still finds a way to get off the throw. And it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Austin. And now it’s Austin Hayes. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Now one missed. Fourth inning underway. No score. [Music] in the air right side. Fair ball. Now batting the left. Go ahead. Run on base. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Lux. That one off the mark. And that’s ball one. [Music] just missed. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. And a foul ball. Hayes over at first with one away. Check him out. Full count. Gets a piece and stays alive. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Got him swinging. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Get him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Next for Cincinnati, Spencer Steer flyed to right his first time. Pitch misses. Ball one. Two gone. But the go-ahead run is at first. Top half of inning number four. Just missed. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. That one inside. And now 3 and 0. Will Benson in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs. clearly taking all the way there in that 3 0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. 32 now. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. In the air right field, Kenna drops into the glove and that is that. So, one hit is all they get to the bottom of inning number four now. No score. Back here at Kaufman Stadium. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Vinnie Pascantino. fought off foul. [Music] That’s down and in. Two strikes [Applause] and that’s down it away. Two [Music] strikes up the middle. whips it to first on the run and they get the out. Now batting the designated hitter, Salvador. And now the DH Salvador Perez 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. And that’s in the dirt. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Music] Next offering in there for a strike and the count even at one strike. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He’ll touch them all. His fourth home run of the season and the Royals take the lead. It’s one- nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the [Applause] bat. We take another look as Stackcast tells us that ball took off at 110 mph and plenty of distance as well. I mean, that was an impressive home run, boo. He squared it up and knew it was gone. [Applause] Base is empty, one away. Here’s the third baseman, Mel Garcia. And then misses off the outside [Applause] edge. And another ball. Abbott maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitched. They’re not trusting their stuff. One down, base is empty. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. base hit. Now batting right fielder Mark B at first. Mark K steps in for the Royals. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Checks over to first back safely. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher’s a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. That’s a ball. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes swing and a ball lifted in the air. He’s got it and there are two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Centerfielder number. So, up now for Kansas City. Drew Waters, the switch hitter batting right. There goes the runner. Pitch in for a strike. throw. When your catcher is not a great thrower, you have to do a better job at controlling the running game. And that’s throwing over. That’s stepping off, doing whatever you can to try to keep that base Steeler’s rhythm off. Well, they weren’t able to do it right there. They’re going to have to make some type of adjustment. Our players are going to be running all game. Garcia at second with two down. Next offering is fouled back. That’s a ball went with the sweeper. [Music] [Applause] Got it. They limit the damage here. So, they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Royals one and the Reds nothing. All set for the start of the inning and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Will Benson Benson Waka back to work and that one wrapped foul. Well, these Reds just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. This one’s into the outfield. Could be extra bases around first heading for two into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. And now the catcher comes up to him. Tyler Stevenson grounded out. His first time off. Fast ball and he gets out of the way. tying run and scoring position. We’re in the top of the fifth. He’s trying for third. Pitch is low. Throw to third. Save and the tying run is now only 90 ft away. back to the mound. He’s got it. Tosses the first one away here in the fifth. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. But it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. 0 for one so far. You have to find a way to score the runner from third, especially with less than two outs. Wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one [Applause] and downstairs. And that one fouled off. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. [Applause] That misses. It’s two and two. Two two. [Applause] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. The two- two on the way. Good job to fight that one off. Runner on to third. One gone. [Applause] and it remains two and [Applause] [Music] two. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball on the ground right side. India over to first in time. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Well, there it is. A little old school manufacturing of a run after that double. Ground out to get him over and another ground out to get him in. Nice job to get that RBI. So two down now. And here is TJ Fredel. That pitch gets the inside corner and that’s strike one. outside corner. There’s the strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Check swing. And that’s a ball. That pitch wasn’t even close. And they still got a check swing out of it. He’s going to have to make an adjustment and make it fast. Fly ball center field Waters and he makes the catch and that is that. But they push across one run, one hit, no errors and no one left. Last half of the fifth coming up all tied 1-1. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning and to the plate for Kansas City. Michael Massie, no leftielder. Massie, 26 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Nick Martinez up and throwing. Sudter getting loose as well. [Music] Edge of the zone for a strike. Oh, and two now. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. And he dodges that fast ball. Foul ball still a one and two count. Come on. line drive and a base hit and a good start to the inning. Good two strike hitting right there. A bit of a long start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. And here is Freddy Fine. first offering and it just misses. Called strike right there. That was the Swiffer, but it missed. Messi gets his lead at first with nobody out. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted. Fredel long run on his horse that skips over the fence. So it’s an automatic double. And boy, do they catch a break. Otherwise, you’re looking at runners around the bases and probably a run that scores. Now the Red’s manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Andrew Abbott will depart and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Now pitching for Nick Martinez gets the call from the pen. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Jonathan Indie at the plate. Go for two in this one. And there’s the strike. 01’s the count. [Applause] Fast ball is outside. [Applause] Up and in. Now two balls in a strike. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That one finds the zone. Two balls, two strikes. Good eye right there. That’s a really good take. Bobby Whit Jr. in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two in scoring position. Nobody out. Last half of inning number five. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Lux makes the grab on the run. He’ll score on the sack drive and a 2-1 ball game now. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk them, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. That one finds the corner and one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. That pitch in for a strike and the count is 0 and two. He’s clearly out there throwing pitchers pitches in this situation. First base is open. He walks him. No big deal. [Applause] [Music] cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. He swung over top of the curve ball. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I call it a power curve ball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Foul ball there. [Music] rolled softly but that goes foul. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] The next pitch misses one and two to count. One ball, two strikes to count. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Two balls, two strikes the other way. Makes the catch and over. A run on two hits and they lead one. We’re through five. It’s the Royals two and the Reds won. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now the number two hitter, Santiago Espol. That’s in for a strike. [Applause] on its way to the corner and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball that’s ripped into the outfield. No trouble here. Puts it away for the one up. One down. Now batt Ellie Ellie de la Cruz the next to hit for the Reds. You know one of the most memorable innings ever for Ellie happened in July 2023. In one inning de la Cruz hit a two out single to take the lead and then proceeded to do something that a Red’s player hasn’t done in more than a 100red years. He stole second, third, and home in the same inning. It only took two pitches for him to steal all three bases. swaying and a miss and a count. One and two. Betting really sells the change up with that arm action. That’s outside and the count is even. Two and two. I got three. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. This one smoked could be trouble around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay. He’s in there. Well, most guys would have a double out of that. But for elite speed like his, that’s an automatic double. He’s thinking, “How do I turn this into a triple?” And that’s exactly how you do it. One down, runner at third. Now it’s the DH Austin Hayes. And that clips the inside corner. Dela Cruz stands at third with one gone in the inning. Fouled off. He was late. I think ultimately you want to tie him up. Get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. [Applause] just misses there, man. Oh, man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Fights that one away. Still one and two. One- run game. One out, one on. That one not close. And it’s two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Fights it off. He’ll see another CIA strikes him out for the second time today. Well, they were pretty much giving it to him right there. Playing the infield back. All you’re looking for on offense is a simple ground ball. You got a tie ball game. Not sure what he was thinking up there. Strike out looking is the last thing you want to see. Now you got to hope the next guy can pick you up and come through with a big two out hit. And now it’s going to be Gavin Lux. hit on the ground to short. Fires to first. That’s out number three. No runs, one hit, no errors and a man left. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Royals two and the Reds won. Back here in Kansas City, we go bottom six. And now Salvador Perez. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. That one catches the corner for a strike. 02 is the count. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Now batting Mike Garcia steps in for the Royals. One for two. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And a foul ball. 0 and two now. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another one down. Base is empty. That one down the line and it goes just fouled. That one misses in the dirt. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Fires to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. Good fade and sinking action of that change. Got that hitter to roll the rightiel. Now a chance for Mark Kenna. Highfly ball, shallow right field, Benson. That is the inning. Now pitching for the John Shriber gets the ball. Now these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Well, one run game. And now Spencer Steer Steer. That one’s in there. throwing one and the sweeper is off the plate. Close but called a ball and that’s ball two. Home played umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. That misses. Three and one. That almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be [Applause] challenged. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Now there’s one away. The right fielder number. Next to hit, Will Benson inside just missed. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Taylor Clark getting ready to go. Serpa, the lefty, warming up as well, trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. out in front with the swing and that is strike one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That one misses and it’s two and one. Hit in the air out to center field. Waters has a beat on it. Out number two. [Applause] Now batting. Here’s the catcher. Tyler Stevenson has grounded out a couple of times in there for strike one. Gets the outside corner with that one. [Applause] Spang and a miss. Struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nobody left for Cincinnati and our score remains 2-1. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Brent Sudter. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So up now for Kansas City, Drew Waters, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Waters first offering misses badly for ball one. Activity in the bullpen for the Reds. Luis May up and throwing for Terry Francona. Rogers also throwing that one the other way. Makes the grab. One away. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Now the left fielder, Michael Massie. Foul ball. He swings and fouls one off. One down, base is empty. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. One ball, two strikes to count. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. The catcher number 34, Freddy. Next is the Royals catcher Freddy Fbine. close but called a ball and it’s one and0. Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play. Massie leads off first with one away. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up. One ball, two strike. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays [Music] alive. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. keeps the AB going. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. [Music] You got this. And look out as that one ran in and got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Now it’s going to be Jonathan India. India. All eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the bottom of the seventh. inside. One ball, one strike. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball end. And he spits on that one. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. [Applause] Two on, one out. Can’t swing. Now we’ll look down to first. No swing. Just held it back there. [Applause] Just misses with that one. Way to lay off that pitch down. Highfly ball lifted into near right field. Makes the grab for the second out. The batter number seven, shortstop, Bobby Witz Jr. And next up for the Royals, Bobby Wit Jr. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Right through there for a strike. All one’s the count. [Music] Turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. Two aboard, two outs. [Music] fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] All right, let’s go. Flares it into the outfield. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Royals strand a pair, but they still lead it two to one. ready to begin the eighth. Now it’s the second baseman Matt Mlan. Shriber measures 6’2 in 225 lbs and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Shriber back to work. Splits the plate. Strike war activity in the bullpen. Carlos Estz, the anchor of the staff, is getting ready to close this one [Applause] out. And that one hit to first. He steps on the bag. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Hey, TJ Fedel the next to hit. First pitch misses. That’s a little bit low. Two and0. Three and0. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Santiago Espino in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Looking to get the tying run on base. And the tying run is on base. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. Here comes the manager out of the dugout. and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. John Shrivever is done and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for new pitcher in the game for the Royals, Anel Serpa. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. [Applause] Substitution being made at first. Pinch running here. Garrett Hans. Garrett. Now the third baseman, Santiago Espino. 0 for three in this one. And Chris, what about the stolen base to try and get the tying run into scoring position? It’s definitely in play and you want to see it early in this count. Move over to first. Trying to keep him close. He’s got plus speed, but in this situation, all eyes are going to be over there trying to keep his lead tight and fouled off. Holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the [Applause] eighth. Ground ball could be two. Whit for one. Double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. No runs, no hits, no errors. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the Royals two and the Reds won. Now pitching. Luis May taking over on the mound. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. 345 do up for the home team to the plate for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino one for three. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. That’s off the mark. Two balls, no strikes. Fast ball for a strike. Let’s go in the air left side. Pauls it in for the out. Now batting the designated hitter, Salvador. Salvi steps into the box now. He’s already homerred here in this one. One more time. Just missed. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Tony Santio, the young right-hander up and throwing. Come on. Up and in. Two and 0. Two balls, no strikes. And another ball. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] Fast ball the inside corner for a strike. A count’s full outside and that is ball four. Now batting runner on first with one gone. Now here is Mikel Garcia. [Applause] And that one way outside. And that is ball one. [Applause] and downstairs. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch. Perez the runner at first with one gone in the inning. And that’s off the outside edge. And now three and one. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And ball four to a board. The right fielder number 21 Mark. Two on, one out. And now the right fielder Mark Cana. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. I think he was sitting off speed there. Inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and there’s two away. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah. And that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it. Here’s the center fielder, Drew Waters. Lind and that’s a base hit. Here comes Perez around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. That’s about as textbook as it gets. got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a T. Next to hit, Michael Massie on the ground right side and that one handled and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. Last chance coming up for the Reds. back now. And on the mound, a closer, Carlos Estz. He’s the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. And you see that erra and that’s where you love to be. And here is Ellie Dea Cruz. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. And there’s one down. Now that he’s two outs away now. It’s the Red’s DH, Austin Hayes. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Estz is what you’re looking for in a good reliever. The ball stays in the ballpark. It’s so hard to square them up. One down. Base is empty. that one a little bit high. One and one. Yeah, he stays out of the middle and and pitches either at the bottom, at the top, on the edges. And because of that, if you do get it in the air, it’s usually just a highf fly ball. And when it’s down in the zone, it’s on the ground. Hard hit left side. Whit over to first. The Reds now down to their final out. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Gavin Lux, the next to hit for the Reds. He’s so consistent that the manager basically could look at it like he’s got three outs sitting in his pocket. That shortens the game. [Applause] when he takes the mound, you feel like, hey, this inning is wrapped or this ball game is over. He’s just that good. And you can see it in opposing hitters as well. Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. And that’ll do it. The Royals claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. 3-1 ball game. Quick game. We were looking for a little bit more. It seemed at points the offenses were going to break out, but a total of four runs combined. Really good pitching and defense on both sides. Just a couple of key swings making all the difference. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
