PRESSURE: Orlando Magic’s Jamahl Mosley Faces CRUCIAL Season | Can He LEVEL UP
The Orlando Magic have a lot of work to do in the offseason to improve their their roster, but then all the pressure turns over to Jamal Mosley. Is he up to the challenge today on Locked On Magic? You are Locked On Magic, your daily Orlando Magic podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And you are indeed locked on Magic. Today is May 27th. It will be May 28th, 2025. My name is Philip Rossik. I’m the senior writer over at Orlando Magicaily.com. You can of course follow me on Twitter, phipr_omd, and on blue sky, phipr. On today’s episode of Lockdown Magic, yes, a lot of pressure on Jeff Welman to deliver a roster that is improved and capable of getting out of the first round. But from there, the pressure turns to Jamal Mosley. The foundation Jamal Mosley has built with this Magic team and how Jamal Mosley needs to level up. We’ll get to all that coming up here in just a moment. But first, we want to thank you again for making lockdown magic part of your day every day. We especially appreciate you if you make us your first listen of the day. We especially appreciate you if you make us a listen every day. Truly appreciate everyone who listens. We’ve climbed over 4,000 subscribers on YouTube. Truly appreciate all the support here in the offseason. Got a lot going on this this week, plus all the regular NBA stuff. Check out everything out on the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. We’re going to get to offseason moves. Tomorrow is an offseason move day. We’re going to talk about trade opportunities. I’ll talk a little bit about what I did in the lockdown mockdraft as we’re slowly going to roll that out. I got to record my videos on that and make sure I understood what I did. Um, but it’s a it’s a summer of action. It’s a summer of opportunity. It’s a summer of movement. Seamstrania uh of ESPN on the Pat McAfee Show said, “We are expecting this summer to be a wild one.” And while I don’t know if it’ll be the craziest summer ever, yes, I expect Kevin Durant to get moved. I expect that there’ll be heavy Janna Sunset Koopo conversations. Trey Young could potentially be on the move. Uh Zion Williamson could potentially be on the move. There is a lot that could and may happen this off seasonason. And obviously the Magic are included in that in in both big and small ways. We want to get to that. But for sure, a lot starts with what the Magic do this offseason. We look at this Magic roster. We know that it has the core pieces in place. Paulo Bane Carol and Fran Vagner are all-star level players. We’re very excited to have Jaylen Suggs back. If you listen to yesterday’s podcast, getting healthy will help this team. And now it’s just about adding some offensive depth to layer on top of the defensive strength that this team has. There is a lot to work through, a lot to improve on, and a lot that this team is going to be very capable of doing here over the next month. It’s only going to be in the next month that this is all going to go down. We’re a month away from the draft right now. It’s going to be a very, very busy offseason. But none of that matters if you don’t have faith in the coach. None of that matters if Jeff Welman does all this work and Jamal Mosley can’t take advantage of it. And look, I read the comments against my better judgment. I read your comments. I go through the list. I go I respond when I feel response is necessary. I read what y’all are saying. And there is a lot of questions about Jamal Mosley. Fair or not, there are. And there always are. Because coach is the easiest position to change. It’s hard to change a guy that you’re going to be paying $51 million a year for in Paulo Bancerero. If he gets all NBA, that’s 30% of your cap next year. It’s hard to get rid of the guy you’re paying $41 million a year to, that’s Fron Vagner. It’s hard to move the $33 million, you know, player in Jaylen Suggs. Yes, role players can be moved in and out, and we’ll talk more about that tomorrow. But coaches are easy, too. And with the money the Magic are spending, with the fact that the Magic are going to be a tax team next year, with the fact that the Magic are likely are likely going to be dancing and flirting with the First Apron next year. There is certainly an expectation that the Magic will succeed, that the Magic will get bring get some bang for their buck. And at the end of the day, you wouldn’t want Jamal Mosley to feel completely comfortable. And I love Bose. Bose is my guy. Um, but after the season that Magic just had where they didn’t meet expectations, they didn’t take that next step. And again, injuries were a big part of it. We can’t ignore that. But the fact of the matter is, even if this team’s healthy, do you believe they are good enough to take on the Pacers, the Knicks, the Thunder, the Timberwolves, because that’s where the Magic want to get. And so anytime you’re a playoff team with ambition like the Magic have and you fail to meet expectations, you fail to meet this base level of what you’re trying to do. Anytime that happens, you have to measure everything. You have to measure it and say, “Okay, do we have the right voice leading us? Is this the guy that’s going to take us over the hump?” So, yes, the pressure right now is on Jeff Welman. Deliver a roster that provides no excuses. Deliver a roster that fixes some of the offensive issues that you have. Deliver a roster that is vastly improved in talent so that Jamal Mosley has the tools in his toolkit. I don’t think last year was a bad season for Jamal Mosley. I thought Jamal Mosley did an incredible job keeping this team together, keeping this team focused on the big goals and trying to squeeze everything he could out of this season. I really I I I don’t think Jamal Mosley did a bad job. I I freaking named Jamal Mosley the MVP in the second quarter of the season because it was by pure grit and determination, the foundation and the culture that he has built that this team had a chance to make the playoffs. And while there are little things we could argue about, we’re going to get into some of those in a minute later on in the show. While there are plenty of things to be upset about, Jamal Mosley has always done well with the big things. Jamal Mosley got more out of the roster last year than I think any than I I don’t think very many coaches could have gotten as much out of the roster that he could have gotten out. And then at the end of the day, yes, Orlando lost in five games to Boston and nobody satisfied with that. But at by the same token, the Magic still acquitted themselves well. The Magic still came out of that series saying, “We played well. We showed who we are. We fought hard and we didn’t have enough personnel lines. So yeah, pressures first on Jeff Bman to add personnel. The next pressure is on Jamal Mosley to use that new personnel. To say the least, if the Magic struggle out of the gate, if the Magic are a First Apron team or a tax team, and they’re going to be a tax team, that’s that’s written in stone. Forget your signin trades. Forget any of that. Not happening. Um, if the Magic struggle out of the gates and are just puttering along at the same level that they are, if their offense does not look vastly improved, Jamal Mosley deserves to be on the hot seat. You know, we’ll we’ll render judgment as we get to the season. Maybe they’re extenduating circumstances, but we have to think about what’s best to advance this team. Right now, that’s still Jamal Mosley, kids. That’s that’s that’s still Jamal Mosley. He has still done a great job with this roster. He’s done he’s built this thing from the ground up. He has the complete trust of the team’s leadership. Once that’s broken, that’s when you’re in trouble. But, you know, by the way, I don’t think that’s happened. But, he has trust of the team’s leadership of their best players. He has proven that he can build and grow this team. He has proven that he can squeeze every ounce out of this team that is possible. But, there is obviously still more that has to happen. And at the end of the day, we are in the results business. All that matters right now is are the magic getting better or are they stagnating and getting worse. Last year, we did not get to see them get better. They stagnated at best. Obviously, worse record, worse seating, all that stuff. And when you have a step back, a setback like that, you have to ask yourself why and evaluate every part of the franchise. That does include the management, but management always comes last. Um they the project is still in a positive direction. The Magic are not firing Jeff Welman. He’s gonna get a chance to make the moves that he needs to make. And yeah, one of those moves one day down the road is probably changing coaches. Next year, the 2026 season is a big season for Jamal Mosley. It is a big season for him to to to determine if he can take that next step with this team because if the Magic make the kind of moves we’re expecting them to make, they should have the pieces and the personnel to take that next step. So, the pressure is on Jamal Mosley. So, let’s talk about Jamal Mosley’s season, the foundation that he has set and why that matters. We’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of A Lockdown Done Magic is brought to our friends over at Door Dash. NBA fans, you know what time it is. Even even at exit interviews, and I went back and listened to exit interviews. I’m I’m milking that for as much as I can, guys. Um, even at exit interviews, Jeff Weltman made it abundantly clear that he believes in continuity as much as he can. And and so I wouldn’t expect the Magic to go keep the same roster next year. They obviously need to add, they obviously need to be aggressive. Um, if anything, just to keep up with the Joneses a little bit. Uh, but Jeff Welman is not going to make major changes to the roster without some careful consideration and thought. And that includes coach. So, I I had some people ask me throughout the course of the season. I had people I had like scouts ask me during the playoffs if Jamal Mosley was in trouble. And I would I I will tell you what I told that scout. No, I I I think he’s fine. Uh the the team like was in a deep hole. They were really struggling with the injuries and they stuck together. If they did not finish the season 12 and six to get the seven seed, then I think there would be a lot more danger. Then I think there’d be a little bit more shaky ground. But the fact that the Magic played so hard to finish the season, to earn the seven seed, they they they did not fall to the seven seed. They earned it. They they won that thing. and then to play as well as they did in the playoffs. You can say what you want about their series with the Celtics. The games were not as perhaps competitive as we would have liked them to be, but there is no doubt they played hard. They made Boston work for everything. And even though Boston ended up with a strong offensive rating in the series, everyone kind of came away super impressed with the Magics defense. If Boston has shot the way they shot against Orlando against New York, they’d be playing in the conference finals right now. Um they had some bad shooting luck against the Knicks. Uh then again, they should have won some of those games. Um the Magic the Magic then have a foundation and so the Magic aren’t throwing that foundation away. This has been a roster that has been built with trust over the last four years. Um and Jamal Mosley has earned that trust. He has earned that from everybody. You don’t get the a young team like this to be the second best defense in the league after being the fifth best defense in the league two years ago without complete trust and buy in. Teams that are this good defensively, they’re they they don’t have bad coaching. And so I I do find the complaints that the Magic don’t have good coaching to be a little bit out there, just just not accurate to be perfectly honest. Now, we can argue about the offense and obviously the offense is not good enough and there are reasons why I think the offense is the way it is. Some of it is personnel, some of it is tactics and there are places where the Magic have to improve and we’re going to get to some of those places in a minute. I’m not sitting here saying Jamal Mosley is perfect, but I think what’s important is that as the Magic build out of this development of the rebuilding phase of their project, they have a strong foundation because of Jamal Mosley and changing that foundation, getting rid of that, getting rid of what’s worked threatens the whole project. And so, you know, making that kind of a change does have to come with a lot of consideration, a lot of careful thought. It has to be clear that this team just isn’t getting any further with their coach. And frankly, like I I I don’t think that’s the case. When I look at Jamal Mosley, and I look at how they play in the playoffs, especially, the Magic have outperformed their expectations in the playoffs. They weren’t expected to take Cleveland to seven games after those first two games. And yeah, it did look like Javal Mosley was a little bit out of his depth and he overthought some things. Uh especially with that lineup change with Jonathan Isaac and at center, but they adjusted and they won those games. They came back, they made it a seven game series. They had belief. Until that belief is gone, Jamal Mosley is your head coach. That’s the foundation from which everything is built on. And if the Magic are going to be successful and make the kind of changes that we’re expecting, it’s going to take your leaders, Paliban, Carol France, Vagner, whether they’re ready for leadership or not, they are your team leaders. They are the guys who define everything that you do. Paulo France, Jaylen Suggs, they’re the guys that are bringing new people in. They’re the ones that are going to demand buyin from new players. Jamal Mosley is the kind of guy that connects with players. There’s a reason why everybody in the league loves him. He connects with players on a very deep level. And that foundation is everything. As the Magic prepare for this next phase, you can’t level up. And and that’s the phrase that Jamal Mosley used what three years ago now. You can’t level up if you don’t have a place to jump from to to grow from. And Mosley has established that with the defensive identity that this team has with the culture of effort and intensity that they bring. You can’t help but bring that energy with you. I I’m a big believer and this is one of the reasons why I have come around a little bit on that was a big strike of lightning. Um this is one of the reasons why I have come along come around on the Anthony Simons idea is because I believe the culture here in Orlando the culture that Jamal Mosley has built can teach non-defenders to be passable defenders. They did it with Mo Vagner. And so this is a test of culture as much as anything else. And I believe that culture is strong. Again, it’s small. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that 12 and six is anything to celebrate. But to see the Magic rally the way they did after that terrible home stand. They went one and six on a sevengame home stand. And things looked very dark, as dark as they do outside. as I’m as I’m recording this and you hear thunder probably over my microphone to go 12 and six to close the season and get the seven seed. That was a statement by this team, by this group and by Jamal Mosley. They could have given up. They could have quit. They could have been done with the season with all the injuries that they had, but they rallied. They believed they got there. And I think that says so much. I I really do believe that says so much about who this team is and what Jamal Jamal Mosley brings. Obviously though, it isn’t just about the foundation anymore. As I mentioned, we are jud we have to judge this team on results. The goal now is, you know, 50 wins maybe is the goal win-wise, but getting out of the first round home court advantage, that’s the goal for this team. That’s the kind of team the Magic want to be. And to do that, it’s going to take Jamal Mosley leveling up. We’re going to talk about the ways that Jamal Mosley needs to Jamal Mosley and this team needs to level up. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. You might recall two, three years ago now, Jamal Mosley exited the season. And the Magic had just completed uh this was a 35 win season um against the Miami Heat. They beat the Heat in Miami Sunday afternoon game to close the year. B, you know, starters came off the floor early. I maybe they didn’t even win that game. I don’t remember anymore. It was irrelevant. Didn’t matter. The Magic didn’t matter the Heat. You know, Yonas Hassen played a lot in that game. And Jamal Mosley kind of set the mission statement for the team moving forward. Yes, it was great that the Magic finished the season on such a high note. They went what 27 and 28 over the last 55 games. Felt like they hit the 500 stage. The goal now is to level up, to not make losing a habit, to not accept the pat on the back. And over the last two years, that has been the kind of galvanizing mission. I’ve used that term. I I loved it. I love coach speak. Give me coach speak. I will judge you on your coach speak. Give me the give me the ammunition to judge your team. Please give me the terms that you want me to judge your team on. The Magic have indeed leveled up. Players individually have leveled up. The group as a whole has leveled up. Now comes the next part because it’s not just the players that have to level up. It’s Jamal Mosley has to level up too. We all know the issues. We all know the biggest problem with this team is the offense. 27th in the league in offensive rating this year, 30th in three-point field goal percentage. The Magic have not had an offense outside the bottom 10 in the league since Dwight Howard in 2012. A functioning offense, even just an average offense, goes a long way with the defense the Magic have. Orlando last year was some ungodly record when they shot just 33% from three. I don’t have that. If you let me stall, I will look it up. Um, if you give me permission to stall a little bit. Let me let me go look this up. Actually, the Orlando Magic last year. Yeah, come on. Basketball reference work. Uh, the Orlando Magic last year went here. One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. The Magic last year went 23 and8. 23 and eight when they shot 35% from three. Just 35% from three. It’s crazy how good this team could be if they had just a functioning three-point shooting team. Obviously, so much of the focus this year is on offense, is on improving the team’s offense. All the players we’re talking about in the draft, in free agency, in um in trades are offensive-minded players. The Magic are talking about yes, maybe sacrificing a little bit of their defensive cohesion for a little bit more improved offense. And look, some of this does fall on Jamal Mosley, but I want to note this too. The average the Magic over the last two years averaged about 18 wide openen three-point attempts per game. Um it’s about middle of the league, about league median. The difference was last year 2024 they shot 37% on those threes. This year they shot 34 33. That is a huge huge difference. So yeah, making your open shots would go a long way. The Magic got about 18 wide openen threes per game in the playoffs. They stayed at about their average uh that they did in the regular season. A lot of teams see fewer of those quality shots. A coach’s job is not to make the shots. I want to make this clear. A coach’s job is not to make the shots. It is to put players in a position to succeed. It is to create plays and opportunities for those open shots. And there are ways that Jamal Mosley can improve in that. I think there are tactical things Jamal Mosley can do to get better shots. But ultimately, the Magic have to make shots. It’s It’s not rocket science. And so, the goal this summer, get more proven, better shooters, get more proven, better creators, give Jamal Mosley the tools for us to see what this offense should actually look like. The Orlando Magic’s offense is a funky offense. It is based a lot on the read and reaction of their star players. They give the ball to Palan Carro. He runs a pick and roll. He reads where the defense is going. He makes decisions. He makes plays. He makes passes. And ultimately, the Magic’s quality of shots depends on those passes being good, being on time, on target, and Paulo Vancero making the right reads or France Vagner making the right read. The Magic’s offense is based on this read and react to what the defense is doing. And I think that is I I’ve said this for several years. I think the Magic could use more guard rails for this kind of an offense. I think the Magic could be a little bit better about having um about having some set set things they can do to get good shots and and kind of run through sets a little bit more. But ultimately, this is going to help them when they get to the playoffs because they’ll be so much harder to predict. They’ll be able to say, “Oh, the defense is taking this away. Well, then we just go to that.” And that’s fine. I’ve always said this, Jamal Mosley runs an offense for the team the Magic are going to be rather than the team that they are. And we can debate whether that’s the right thing or not. It it they probably need a little bit more of a hybrid of that. Uh and yeah, you should coach the team you have, not the team you ought to be, because now it’s about results. It’s not about, oh, we’re developing into this team. We’re okay making mistakes. You want to limit those mistakes a little bit. Now, having said that, to run this kind of an offense, the Magic need better shooting to space the floor to give players the opportunities to make those decisions. And they need more playmakers and creators so they’re not just running the same two guys into the wall every time. They have multiple playmakers and creators to create easy shots for everybody. That’s why I’ve said and you can go back listen uh earlier this week or I think it was I think I talked about this yesterday um how why the Magic need more creation as much as they need more shooting. The shooting will come around. They’ll shoot better next year. Mark that down. They’ll shoot better next year. Um but they need more creation to get more quality looks. Of course, we’re expecting Jeff Welman to provide that kind of personnel to to help the team get to that next level, but then it’s on Jamal Mosley to implement that. If the Magic add better offensive players and they struggle to shoot again like Antavius Cwell Pope did, then we have real questions to answer. Jamal Mosley has to do better adapting to his personnel. It can’t just be, oh, we’re plugging everybody in and expecting everyone to operate the same way. The offense has to be better. It has to be smarter. It has to be more dynamic. And it has to adjust when one guy has it going and another guy doesn’t. It has to adjust. It has to find more movement and more creation when Paulo and Fron aren’t on the floor. And yeah, adding personnel is going to help. Getting Jaylen Suggs back is going to help. Getting Mo Vagner back is going to help. give them another offensive weapon, another pet play they can go to. But balancing all that and making sure the Magic are improving, that’s on Jeff Welman as that’s on Jamal Mosley as well. This off seasonason, yes, is about everybody getting better individually. But this offseason is about the Magic’s brain trust, helping this team elevate to the next level. And look, Jeff Welman is not in any danger. Paulo’s about to sign a a supermax deal. He’ll get a he’ll get an a crack at this. Coach is so easy to change. Jamal Mosley may not get a second crack at this. And so Jamal Mosley has to help this team level up or the Magic may very well find someone who will. That’s going to do it for me today though. After a season that failed to meet expectations, the entire Orladno Magic team is under question and getting reviewed. The first step is to improve the team’s personnel and offensive abilities. After that, the pressure turns to coach Jamahl Mosley. He has to take the tools Jeff Weltman gives him and elevate the Magic’s offense and results.
Everyone is focused on results now. And while Mosley has built a strong foundation for this team to get to this point, it is now on him to elevate them beyond the rebuild and the culture he has helped create with this team.
How will Mosley level up and rise to the occasion to lead the Magic deeper into the Playoffs? Those are the big questions for the 2026 season.

I’m not interested in a new head coach! Mosley was good enough to help coach LUKA and he is good enough for Paolo and Franz and Jalen! We don’t need a repeat of Golden State getting rid of Mark Jackson for Steve Kerr. Jackson built the foundation and never got to reap the benefits of his coaching! Let’s not put the cart before the horse on this subject.
Love coach Mosley
I think Mosley is doing a good job considering the circumstances he really doesn’t have much to work with outside of p5 and boogie on offense but the whole roster has bought into his system finding a new coach isn’t the answer just gotta get him some more talent to work with
Coach Mos is not the problem however he does need to hire a lead offensive assistant coach to completely change the offense. Jeff Weltman must get some reliable shooting, playmaking & someone who can create his own shot when the shot clock is about to expire around both Paolo & Franz. I believe Anfernee Simons, Gary Trent jr, Quentin Grimes & Cam Thomas would be a great fit.
Give him a offensive coordinator
Mose is a good dude, average coach
This will be his last year as HC of the Magic and I'm all for it . His rotations sucks and puts trust in garbage players
