And rounding out the starting nine at second base, it’ll be Jared Triolo. Again, the lineup for the Pirates, Cruz, McCutchen, Reynolds, Canario, Horwitz, Davis, Hayes, Kiner, Falefa, and Triolo. Meanwhile, on the mound for Pittsburgh, 22 year old right-hander Paul Sch 6, 260 lb, a former first overall pick by the Pirates. He was an all-star last year and this season 3 and five record, a 2.36 ERA. A look at the lineup now for the Arizona Diamondbacks. record at 27 and 28. Leading off in right field, Corbin Carroll batting second, shortstop, Peraldo Peromo. Batting third in left field, Lordis Scuriel Jr. and batting fourth, DH Josh Naylor Suarez at third base, batting fifth. Finan Smith at first base, batting sixth. Alec Thomas at centerfield bats seventh. Jordan Lawler at second base bats eighth. And Jose Herrera rounds out the starting nine. Again, the lineup for the Diamondbacks will be Carol Perdomo, Guriel, Naylor, Suarez, Smith, Thomas, Lawler, and Herrera. And Candy on the mound for the Diamondbacks, rightander, Zack Allen. Zack three and six this year. This will be his 12th start to 525 RA. Whip a little on the high side for Zack 1.36. He’s going to come at you with that fourseam fast ball that comes in about 93 m an hour on average this year. curveball change up slider and and also a cutter when he needs it. I think the two things that really jump out at you is his walk rate. A little bit high right now over four per nine and the home runs that he’s given up 1.46 per nine. So I think against this club especially cuz they don’t swing the bat that well his fastball command is going to be key. Not walking guys and keeping that ball in the ballpark. Evbecks in their Sedona red jerseys today. The Pirates in their all gray sets. Brennan Miller calling balls and strikes. Jeremy Riyak at first. John Tempain at second and the crew chief Chris Conroy at third. Gallon ready his first pitch of the ball game. And he missed upstairs with a cutter. And away we go. First pitch on time at 12:40. Roof is closed. Panels are closed. 96 degrees in downtown Phoenix. 10 to Cruz. A curveball floats in there for a strike and that’ll equalize the count at one and one. Yeah, Zach has been really good with this curveball change up combination this year. His curve is outstanding. Hitters only hit 189 against it. Another curve ball. This time a swing and miss by Cruz. And now Gallon ahead, one ball, two strikes. And this is kind of an area we heard Toy Lavell talking prior to the game today. You’d like to see when Gallon gets to the one-two count, being able to finish off the atbat rather than let it linger and get to a full count. Yeah. just attack stay on the attack but you know do it in in a smart way. Swing and a liner to right that one foul had Cruz out in front there. Yeah, I think the Diamondbacks have been pitching him the same way really this whole series. You know, inside stuff of course Corbin was pounding him with cutters inside and Gallon right now has been throwing the curveball down and in one two swinging a foul. It’s been a roller coaster for Gallon this year and it hasn’t been all bad. Even though there seems to be a lot of panic if you were to see some of the chatter online about the Diamondbacks given this right-hander. You look at a a three start stretch for Gallon starting against the Braves as there’s a swing and a bouncing ball to first glove by Pave. Has to flip to Gallon a little bit low and Gallon is seems to have had something happen to his ankle. Comes up a little bit lame. I think O’Neal Cruz might have got a little bit of it. Pav caught that ball at first base and did not deliver a good throw to Gallon who was over there quickly, but Cruz is pounding it. A low throw. He had to change his footwork to catch this ball and it looked like Cruz might have got him a little bit on the foot. Sure did. I think he just got some spikes on the top of his foot, which all things considered would be a bit more benign than rolling his ankle or getting right on that ankle joint. That that could be a serious problem instead. Just, you know, your standard metal objects on your toes. Easy for us to say up here, but then it gets really dangerous as a pitcher when you’re covering first base with a guy, you know, that when they’re coming down the line like that, you know, I caught one one time like in my Achilles and it was it was very, very painful. But, you know, luckily it was on the top of his foot like you had mentioned, you know, more towards the toe area. And I mean, not to mention those are white spikes. You know, now you got a scuff mark on him. Those look like a custom pair of Jordans. You hate to see it. Shoe polish. But he does look like he is going to stay in the game. And it is a oneup, one down start. It’ll bring up Andrew McCutchen. Probably not the way Zach really wanted to start this out. He got an out which he’s happy about, but hopefully, you know, there’s not too much damage done to that foot. Now, McCutchen first pitch swings. Hard hit grounder to third. Suarez gets it cleanly and his throw to Paven in time. Nice response from Gallon. A one pitch out and now two down for the hero for the Pirates yesterday in Brian Reynolds. Yeah, Reynolds, you couldn’t get him out yesterday. today. I mean, he was hitting everything. And this is a hitter that’s kind of been struggling. I mean, you literally couldn’t get him out yesterday cuz he didn’t get out yesterday. Reached base five times, four for four, including a double and a homer in his last two at bats. Now he swings, sends one out to deep left, but Guriel has a beat on it. He will make the catch. Another one pitch out. And Gallon is out of the first inning with only seven pitches. So, it’s a one, two, three inning. Pirates nothing. Dbecks coming up again. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Thanks for being part of the road and deals. First pitch swung on, hard hit grounder to first right into the glove of Horwitz and he goes to the bag himself. Carol hit it 106, but it’s a one pitch, one out. Bottom of the first inning. Yeah, it just looked like a two seam fast coming up there. A lot of movement on it. Corbin would squared it right up. Unfortunately, hit it on the ground. That will bring up Ronaldo Pomo. Candy’s second start for skins against the Diamondbacks. And tell us a little bit about what makes this kid so special. Well, his his pitch mix is one of the things with his command. He’s going to go from four seamers as you saw right there at 99, a two seamer, a splitter, a sweeper, a change up. He’s also going to throw a slider and a curveball. He’s got great command, only walking 2.36 guys per nine. But the most impressive thing only given up four home runs this year. 0.52 home runs per nine. Nothing and one to count on Purdomo. Bottom of the first no score and skins his 01 pitch is low. One ball and one strike. He was the first overall pick out of LSU back in 2023. And he flew through the minor leagues understandably as this one one swung on and hit in the air to center. cruise to his right in the left center gap will reach up and make the catch and now two down for Lordis Guriel Jr. I actually thought the Dbacks might have an approach against skins of really trying to work the counts as much as they can get his pitch count up and maybe get into the bullpin of the Pirates. But after the first two hitters, they’re up there swinging. Durel averaged back up to 245 on the year. Eight homers, 31 driven in. He’s had a pretty good home stand. Guriel is four for seven. Now he swings, shoots a laser right back up the middle in his center field. A base hit. 99 mph out of Ske’s hand. 107 m an hour off the bat by Guriel. Just torched that ball up the middle. And now his fifth hit of this home stand. And we’re just into game number three. So good to see Lordis’ bat starting to come alive. And that’s going to bring up Naylor. Naylor at 291 hitters, six homers, 34 driven in on the season. Nothing be better right now than get an early lead. Rightander ready skins his first pitch swung on and missed and the count is 0 and one. So you’re right. There’s clearly an aggressive approach against skins. Probably one of the reasons he threw that splitter first pitch to Naylor. Watched him for a couple days and see how aggressive he’s been. DO1 and that time skins missed blowing in. One ball, one strike. Mentioned before how skins had flown through the minor leagues after he was drafted at 23. Made 12 starts in the minors. First the 1-1 pitch and Naylor swings and misses. It’s now one and two. somehow didn’t have a win or loss, but posted a 185 erra. There you have it. That’s the life of a starting pitcher. Can’t control the wins and losses sometimes. One ball, two strikes to count, right? Andrew SK’s ready. Guriel at first. Two down. And the one-two pitch swung on and missed. It gets away from the catcher. Davis and Naylor too late to run down to first. He’ll just allow himself to be tagged out. That’s going to do it in this bottom of the first inning. Dbegs get a hit in strand one. And we go to the second scoreless on the Morgan and Morgan Dex Radio Network. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo. Do you know what it means? And go Diamondbacks. Arizona Diamondbacks. Play here. Arizona Sports 987 and the Arizona Sports app. Mcllen had a nice one, two, three inning in the first. Here he is top of the second facing Alexander Canario and his first pitch taken inside for ball one. Basketball at 92. Canario Horwitz and then Henry Davis. Canario’s had some impressive at bats so far this series. He likes to let it go. He doesn’t work the count too much. That pitch a little bit inside. Looked like a pretty good pitch from Gallon. Two balls, no strikes to count. Yeah, especially with the fast ball. Well, we talked about the command that Gallon needs to have. That was a good pitch. Just wasn’t called for him. Missed badly outside with that one for ball three. Three balls, no strikes to count. Now he finds himself in a situation he’s got to come all the way back cuz the last thing you want to do is walk a leadoff hitter. That’s exactly what he’s done. Nowhere close with that for Seamer. That is ball four and a leadoff walk to Canario to start the second. Yeah, he really yanked on that one. And again, you know, he had a very low pitch first inning. So, it’s going to take some pitches for him to kind of lock in. Usually about 15 to 20 pitches. Talking stick resortation is back. Stay in play with rates as low as $129. Here’s the left-handed hitting Horwitz. First pitch and goodness, where did that one miss? And that’s a couple that have not been called for Zach. And that really puts him in the hole. We saw some pretty spotty strike calling yesterday, especially with that inside part of the plate to lefties. Now the pitch and that one called a strike. One and one. Corwitz hitting 200 on the year. Really hasn’t had an impact yet offensively in this series. And now Gallon long hold throws to first. Canario scampers back to the bag. Orz is a solid hitter, especially when we saw him play with the Blue Jays, one for four in the opener and one for five last night with a couple of strikeouts. But to your point, good hitter as that is outside. It’s two and one. Just again like a lot of hitters in a lot of series, just hasn’t had the impact that he’s wanted to in the middle of this Pirates lineup. Two balls and a strike, one on, nobody out, no score in the second. Gallon fires and that’s grounded up the middle and that’s going to squirt on through for a base hit. Carnario around second digging for third. The Pirates have him on the corners with nobody out. See, this is what happens when when you end up walking guys, you put an extra guy on base and then just a normal easy ground ball happens to find the hole and next thing you know, instead of a guy on first base with one out, you got guys on first and third with nobody out. And the Pirates now threatening to score. Well, on the one hand, it’s hard to say that this guy’s a red-hot hitter coming into this one. It’s only been a couple of at bats. Then again, Henry Davis yesterday, filling in after the injured Bart had two extra base hits in two at bats. And the first one here swung on and line drive into left field, a base hit. Coming home to score is Canario. It’s a third, pardon me, second hit of the inning. And it’s one- nothing Pittsburgh. Well, just as we had talked before the game, he’s not going to take too many pitches. He’s up there to swing the bat. First pitch, curve ball up into zone. It was almost like a get me over curveball and he just spanked it right by Purdomo. Nothing really Purdomo could do on that one. Yep. And that leadoff walk really comes back to haunt. Brings up Cabrian Hayes. 226 hitter and Gallon’s pitch swung on. Lifted in the air to right towards the line. And hustling over is Carol. He’s going to make the catch. Tagging from second is Horowitz. The throw goes into second. And that’ll keep the double play ball intact. But just like that, Kenny, the Pirates with runners in first and third once again. And only one man down. Yeah, they put a quality at bat on him. Hayes, I mean, he didn’t get his hit, but he’s trying to hit the ball to the right side as you saw and by doing getting it up in the air, he’s able to get, you know, Horwitz over to third base. Now you really need to get that ground ball. Maybe get a double play or pop up or something productive here for Gallon. Man, Hayes went after the first pitch. Davis went after the first pitch. Horowitz went after the third pitch. Here comes a 1. Fa swings. Grounds it to third. Glove by Suarez. Goes to second. There’s one. Lawler to first. That’s a double play on the first pitch. And Gallin as quickly as he got into trouble gets himself out of it. The Pirates get a run on two hits. They do strand one. See if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. And Aueno Suarez leading it off. will take a strike and the count nothing and one going to be skiing or pardon me Suarez Smith and Thomas now the right-hander is on one and that one low and outside one ball one strike skis is a tall guy but he doesn’t really use his height his arm angle is a little bit low which gives him a lot of run on Especially on his two seamer 98 two seamer just ran low and in on Suarez a swing and miss. It’s one and two. Well, especially after a couple sweepers that he threw away and then he makes the ball go the opposite way but coming in at 98 m an hour. Only start against the P the Dbacks for the Pirates right-hander was last August as that pitch is low. Two balls, two strikes. went five in a third innings, allowed two earned runs, and struck out four while walking three. All in all, it was a really impressive performance by the Diamondbacks. Two, two- two pitch. Suarez swung on. That’s a laser foul left side. Skins hung one and Suarez missed the double by about 10 ft. It’s a scary feeling for a pitcher when you hang a sweeper because you don’t have any tilt to it and that ball just stays right there on a platter. That’s what Suarez got. Unfortunately, he was just a little too quick on it. Two balls, two strikes. Ski first base side of the rubber. Winds and unload swing and a miss. 98 just on the inside third and that is strike three. Boy, just that ball just takes off. It starts a little bit on the inside part of the plate and by the time that Suarez is swinging at it, it’s up and in, ready to tie him up. That is some great life on the ball. Smash that like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel. A little bit low. WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. Got a tough zone behind the plate for both pitchers. I think I’ll say one ball, no strikes. Pitch, check, swing, foul. You know, that’s one of the interesting things when the automatic ball strike system, the ABS is introduced into Major League Baseball, whether that’s next year or period of time shortly after that. Cuz the one fear is the 1-1 swung on and a rip foul right side. and it’s now one and two is that an umpire keeps getting the same call wrong. It keeps getting challenged. You keep having it overturned, right? You you don’t want to embarrass anyone, a player, an official, anything like that. But one thing I have wondered, you’d have to talk to an umpire. Is now the one two off the plate away. Two balls, two strikes. If an umpire makes a call thinking it’s a strike and then he sees the ABS go on the video board and sees that it is a little bit down or a little bit wide if that will help correct them for future pitches in that similar location. Yeah, you certainly think so. 2-2 nice swing just to foul off. Pretty good pitch from Skto back change ups going away from Pave. And that one probably off the plate, but David with a good job getting a piece of it. I think you can use all that data to to really better yourself whether you’re a hitter, a pitcher, an umpire. 22 Haven takes a hundred just below the zone. Skins a little tilt to the head. Like you sure about that? Yeah. Well, it shows it’s a strike. Not just after a couple change ups then you throw one a 100. I mean pavement you try to put yourself in his shoes. 32 swung on ground ball to second collected by Triolo and his throw to first in time. Two up, two down and that’ll bring up the center fielder Alec Thomas. This will be a fun matchup. I think Alec likes it likes the fast ball. Likes to put it in play early. We’ll see if he can run into one. Thomas 265 average, one homer, 16 RBI’s and skins his first one. Breaking ball. That’s a strike. One- nothing Pirates. Two down in the bottom of the second. Bags got a single from Lordis Guriel Jr. in the first as now the 01 from Skung on and fouled. Well, two pitches, no fast balls. Got the little sweeper. The first pitch and the last pitch is splitter. Probably get another one. There’s the O2. Swung on, lifted in the air to center. And Cruz moving back now onto the warning track will make the catch and Thomas put a good charge into it but not quite enough. It’s a one two3 second and we go to the third. Purdomo gloves and now throws to first in time. That’s the third straight Pirate to swing it. The first pitch and make an out. The guy in the middle of that three, Connor Falefa made two outs on one swing. Hey, welcome to old school of baseball here. This is why pitchers threw complete games. Are they flying commercial? The Pirates. My goodness. Top of the order now at O’Neal Cruz now. Six of seven outs made by the Pirates in this game have been on the first pitch. And O’Neal Cruz mercifully takes down low for ball one. I think he wanted to swing. It was just too low for him. It’s great if you’re gallon as the one and that one a little bit low as well. Ball two. Two balls, no strike. Certainly, you do want to be careful when you see guys going after the first pitch that you’re not just getting a a get me over fast ball early in the count. as now the 2. Cruz swings and foul tips it. Well, Zach is such an intelligent pitcher that he picks things up very, very quickly. He reads swings, he reads approaches, and he knows exactly what’s going on. So, he’s just going to be a little careful with Cruz like he did this at bat. First pitch, change up down and comes back with a curveball. Two-1 pitch. There’s a called strike. Change up. Two and two. It seems like Cruz is very stubborn to the idea that he’s going to get a fast ball and just waits until he gets to two strikes as now the two- two pitch. Curve ball swung on and grounded foul towards first. Yeah, I think as long as you keep it down and in, he has a difficult time elevating that ball. We’ve seen him hit some hard foul balls to the right side, but nothing just smashed up in the air. Here comes a two- two pitch. missed outside with a fast ball and that’s going to fill up the count at three and two. Even with his lengthy at bat, Gallon only had 26 pitches. 3-2 on the way. And the first one from Ski swung on and fouled. Might have gone right off the mask of our home plate umpire. So the count is nothing and one. It’ll be Lawler Herrera and then the top of the order and Carol. Big swing by Lawler that time. Just fouled it straight back. But again, aggressive nothing and one the count. Ski ready to pitch. Swung on and miss. That was a good fast ball at 98 with some sink on it. And now the count is nothing at two. The run and the sink. I mean just just a power fast ball. We’ve already seen him hit a hundred. The 02 from Skins and strike three called top of the zone fast ball and there is one out 99 at top of the zone and it was right there and just just folded this time. It must have been sitting something different. So there’s one down and here is Jose Herrera. First pitch on the way. Herrera takes a called strike. Skines already three strikeouts in the early going of his start. We’ll see if Herrera can take this ball the other way. Here comes the 01 and that’s outside one ball and one strike. It it was really interesting. Remember having a conversation with a manager last year and it was after the start against skins and again the Dbacks they performed pretty well. Got a couple runs got them out of the game in the sixth inning as this one one pitch. There’s a swing and miss and it’s one and two. when he was talking about how for the right-handed hitters to try and visualize trying to hit the ball to short because with that velocity, with that sort of focus point, you’re more likely to hit the ball up the middle as the one-two pitch is low to Herrera. Two balls, two strikes. I mean, unless you’re in the top 1% when it comes to bat speed, even if you’re trying to sit on a heater, it just gets on you so quick at that 66 frame of his that you really have to have an idea of what you’re trying to do. That one, strike three called again. Goodness. One inning it is, one inning it isn’t. And that’s the second looking strike out. Making it tough on the hitters. They’re not quite sure what the strike zone was. I mean, this was a good pitch and looked like it was more outside the line than in, but he got the call. Two strikeouts. And now here is Carol. Carol the ground out. His first time up. One- nothing Pirates. Bottom of the third. Carol takes the first pitch he sees for a strike. Middle of the plate sweeper. And it’s 0 and one. Corbin came into this game two for three against Schemes. Swing and a miss on a fast ball and the count nothing at 299 on that one. Yeah, it seems like he’s really gotten to his fast ball a little bit more this inning. Why wouldn’t you throw at 99? Here comes the O2 pitch. Swung on. That ball ripped to deep right field. Going back is Reynolds. And it’s going to be a one hop over the right field wall. And that is going to be a ground rule double for Carol. The good numbers continue against the Phenom for the Pirates. And the Dbacks have the tying run in scoring position early with Bernomo at the plate. You just had a feeling that Corbin was going to swing at this pitch no matter where it was. He got a change up outside part of the plate and still hooked it. I mean, talk about strong wrists. And unfortunately, it bounced over the wall. Otherwise, that probably would have been a triple. Speaking of Purdomo, this Saturday, take home the Aldo Purdomo bobble featuring Purdomo in the new City Connect, courtesy of Chaz Roberts. And that’s probably a really good compar power splitters. You know, Justin has one of the best in baseball. There’s the O2 pitch. Oh, did that hit Purdomo? It was way inside and it did. Just clipped him. Now that is going to make it a hit by pitch. Set up runners at first and second. Now, will the Pirates challenge? They did yesterday on a similar situation with Lordis Guriel Jr. and Don Kelly will not challenge. So, that sets up first and second for Guriel. It’s awful hard to see when someone gets hit by a pitch or the ball hits the bat and we saw with Guriel before yesterday, but it’s really difficult and that’s kind of a break for the Dbacks, especially if Guriel has been swinging that hot bat. Get another base knock here. Had a base hit his first time up. That was our first hit of the game presented by New Vision Autoglass. New Vision and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation are teaming up to donate funds to veterans with every hit this season as part of the Hits for Heroes program. First pitch sinker that catches the corner for a strike. It is 0 and one. One- nothing Pirates. However, Debbecks have Carol at second. Purdomo at first. Two down. And now Lordis is going to ask for time here. Skines up to 40 pitches so far. Two and two/3 innings. Meanwhile, Gallon only 30 pitches thrown to get through the first three. However, as I mentioned, the Pirates, they do have the lead. And now Skins is home with the 01. Mortis just takes inside. One ball, one strike. Ski over the course of the year, runners in scoring position, they’re hitting 200 against him. Higher than his normal batting average against 1-1. That is a strike call. That was off the plate. I don’t know if that was a makeup call or if that was a lot of that’s to to Henry Davis who brought that ball in, but that should have been called a ball. Been an ugly strike zone this afternoon. And now the one two and that one just missed inside. I don’t think anybody knows what’s going to be called right now. Another real effective pitch. Had a lot of the zone and called a ball. or has yet to swing the bat and now 22 swinging a miss. Struck him out anyway as the inning comes to an end. The Dback strand a pair and Skri out three in the bottom of the third. We go to the fourth. Pirates won Dbacks nothing. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Arizona Sports 987 and the Arizona Sports app. It is the top of the fourth inning and Gallon works to Brian Reynolds. First pitch and Reynolds takes a strike. Nothing at one the count. It’ll be Reynolds, Canario, and Horwitz. Reynolds flew out to left field his first time up. Pirates a one- nothing lead as this 01 back door curve ball missed outside. One ball and one strike the count. Allen home with a 1-1 pitch. swung on, rolled over to the right side. Lawler has it shoot right off the heel of his glove. It ricochets about 10 15 feet back towards the infield and a routine ground ball turns into an E4. Second error of the year for Lawler. Looked like Zack took a little bit something off that curveball a little slower. Got on the roll over. Great pitch and that just clanked right off the heel of Lawler’s glove. And when that happens, now you got a guy with some speed over at first base. You should have one out, nobody on. And and now it kind of opens the door for the Pirates. Well, let’s see if Zach could come back now and maybe get a ground ball, get a double play. Canario walked and scored back in the second. each team with just a couple of hits so far. Is a dangerous hitter. He’s swung about well in this series. First pitch and he takes upstairs for ball one. Looked to be right at the very top of the strike zone. Half the ball in, half the ball not, but another no call. Yeah, another another pitch could have been called a strike. And the 10 is inside for ball two. You would have thought coming into today with a pitching match up that it would be a pitcher day for success, but the hitters, they’re going to get a little extra help, it appears. Here’s a 200. That one high and tight for ball three. Three balls, no strikes. Talking to many umpires, you know, throughout the course of my career and even afterwards, when they have two really good pitchers on the mound, they get into the flow of the game with them. And that’s not the case so far in this game. Homeplayed umpire Brendan Miller. Brio Canario takes all the way. Looks at a middle of the road strike. Well, you really don’t want to follow the error with a walk. Gallon has no control over the error. He does have control of this at bat and his 3-1 swing and a miss. That’s a gutsy curve. And that’s where we’ve seen a lot of teams wait out Gallon. They basically say they’re not going to swing at the curve all day cuz he doesn’t throw it for a strike late in the count. That one was out of the zone. But another swing there. Yep. Good pitch, but that really helped Gallon out by swinging at that. 32 throw to first. Reynolds back there quickly. First of two disengagements. Zack just like Mel Kelly, very, very quick feet when they’re on the mound. Both have excellent pickoff moves. 3-2 pitch swung on and Canario fouls it away. Laid on the fast ball. At Dignity Health, our team of orthopedic experts can help keep you in motion. Don’t let joint pain put your life on pause. Visit dignityhealth.org/azortho to learn more. 3-2 pitch. Curveball swung on. grounded towards third. It’s a fair ball. Suarez gloves and he throws on the run. Nice scoop made up the line by Pavin. Reynolds moves to second, but there’s now one down for Horwitz. Very fortunate right there. Suarez caught that ball on the run. I thought he had time to be able to plant on this ball and make a strong throw, but again, we’ve been seeing him do this, throwing the ball on the run, trying to get the ball over there. Pave had to scoop that out of the dirt because that could have been ugly if that play wasn’t made. Nice footwork there by Pavin. And now Horwitz. The pitch swung on. Weekly hit to first on a big bounce. Pave gloves. Gives Gallon the stop sign. Totaps the bag. And now there are two down. And let’s see if Gallon can pick up his infielder Lawler here and strand that E4 at third base. And the batter is going to be Henry Davis who had an RBI base hit back in the second inning. And odds are he’s probably swinging at this first pitch. We’ll see if Zack just goes a little off the plate with it. One- nothing Pittsburgh. Top of the fourth. Two down and Reynolds at third. First pitch to Davis. Swung on and lifted high in the air to right center. It’ll be Carol giving way to Thomas. Thomas makes the catch. The inning comes to an end and no damage done. First one from skins a bit outside the cow. One ball and no strikes. Now it’s about time the Dbacks get on the scoreboard here. Got to get this game at least even. Here comes the one pitch. Swung on. Little flare into shallow right field. This is trouble. Falling fast. That is down inside the line. Naylor with an aggressive turnaround first. He’ll hold there though. And he just manages to place one into right field for a leadoff single. Boy, inside pitch and he was kind of bold on the pitch. She just kind of popped it up down the right field line and that was really in no man’s land. Looked like a cutter, maybe a a slider and it just fell in for a base hit. And I mean Josh even thought about making that turn and getting to second base, but he would have been out. Torres struck out his first time up against skins and the right-handers pitch. Check. Swing. Strike. 0 and one on the count. Injuries can come out of left field. If you’ve been injured in an accident, call Morgan and Morgan, America’s largest injury law firm and proud sponsor of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now the 01 pitch. Gito’s got a nice little gap in left center if he can launch one that way. 02 got a pitch to hit. He pops it up high in the air to shallow left field and in comes Canario to make the catch. Oh man, that’s the one against the pitcher-like schemes you dream of getting. the old cookie that he missed it. Just a nothing spinner right over the middle of the plate that time. And yeah, I mean Suarez’s eyes probably lit up too big that time seeing that ball and where it was at and he just got underneath it. I’ll bring up P Smith to ground out his first time up. We talk about the velocity one thing but boy oh he really gets some life to it. You know, Katie, when you watch skins, it’s not a onetoone comparison. There’s the one-1 pitch that one outside, but he certainly seems to have the stature and the mound presence of a guy like Nolan Ryan. Yeah, that’s rare earth there when you’re talking about that. But, you know, he’s got a tremendous arm, you know, and he knows exactly what he wants to do out there. 2-1 and that one just missed. Oh, check swing. They say he went around. That was a little harsh. I don’t know if he went around. I thought the pitch was a strike though. Maybe he did go around. It probably did. Probably a good call. Probably was a strike too. One on, one out. And Skoo two swinging a foul. Now, who knew in the early 1970s that Nolan Ryan was going to go on and pitch for another what 18, 20 years with the type of velocity that he did. But I’m sure when he first came up that that name made shock waves throughout baseball as Skins is 22 again, swung on and that one pulled foul. But I imagine when the Mets were in town and then the Angels back in the early 70s, it you heard that Ryan was pitching, you probably tried to find a way to get a ticket stuff. Oh, without a doubt. You know, he came up in 1968 and then 1969 played a nice little role in the Amazing Mets that year in the World Series. Then he gets traded to the Angels and that’s where he really took off. Beautiful pitch by Ski. Swing and a miss on a running change up. He’s now got a half dozen strikeouts. Yeah, Pay even lost his balance on that one. I mean, you got to respect the fast ball and so hard to hit a good change up and I mean, that’s just sometimes you just got to tip your hat. First pitch to Thomas. He takes a strike called. Looked a bit inside there. That was way inside. and called a strike. There was a seven-year stretch early in the career for Ryan where in six of those seven years he led the American League in both walks and strikeouts. Now throw over to first to check on Naylor. 1974 led the majors 332 innings pitch. We talk about guys throwing 200 innings and giving them a medal. 332. If I’m not mistaken, he threw over 200 pitches in one game. It’s amazing. It’s amazing. And I’m sure it’s true. I think I saw that. We’ll put Zen on it. I mean, I wonder how many pitches he threw in a season as he pitched to Thomas, swung on, grounded sharply to third. Hayes looked at second, nobody was covering. Now he throws to first. And that’ll do it for the Dbacks. So they get a leadoff hit and nothing else. And after four innings of play, it is the Pirates one and the Nebebacks nothing in the Morgan and Morgan. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with ano taco. The Arizona Diamondbacks play here. Arizona Sports 987 and the Arizona Sports app. Gallon ready for the start of the fifth inning. 42 pitches thrown. That’s all he’s needed to get through those four. And it’s the first pitch here to Hayes. That’s a strike called 0 and one the count. It’ll be Hayes, Kinder, Falefa, and then Triolo. Here’s the 01 pitch. Hayes takes that one a little bit low. One ball, one strike to count. Just getting low and outside. Somebody in that pirate dugout. Might have been Don Kelly. Could have been one of the hitting coaches, but someone may be relaying a message to I don’t know, take a pitch. And it’s a two-1. There’s a strike called because now seemingly out of nowhere some of these pirate hitters with the exception of Henry Davis who has seen two pitches and two at bats starting to work the counts a bit more as Gallon missed high with that one and that’ll make it a 3-2 count and even the inning when they scored the run in the second inning with the leadoff walk all the guys after that they couldn’t wait that’s outside and Gallon walks Cabrien and Hayes. It’s a second walk issued by Gallon. You just said it a moment ago. That first walk came home to score. Yeah, big enough walks just no good. That’s not a guy you want to walk either if you were going to pick some guys in the lineup. That is a guy you want to attack. I know he’s trying, but I know he’s got to work around some trouble. Yeah, but now you just have to make a good pitch. Try to get that double play once again on FFA. Curve ball swinging a miss. Down 0 and one. The 01, another curveball. That one missed inside and the count even at one ball and one strike. left is more of a guy to sprays the ball around. Throw to first. Hey, he’s back in there quickly. Seems like we’ve seen him pull the ball a lot more in this series, but over his past career, I mean, he shoots it all over the place. Yeah, it seems like the defense kind of matches what you’re saying here. The infield is expecting him to pull at the outfield, maybe to push it in the air to the right. Here’s the 1-1. Missed inside with another fast ball. And that’s kind of the pitch that has abandoned Allen over the last couple years and why he maybe hasn’t looked the same as he did in 22 in that marvelous season he had in 23. Finished in the top five of the Sai Young in the National League in both those seasons. Now the pitch grounded up the middle and that’s going to trickle on through for a base hit. That’s just a seeing eye base hit. That’s just pitching in bad luck there. Got the job done. got himself a ground ball, but as you said, the defense was kind of playing. It’s It’s really hard to defend that guy cuz he sprays the ball around and he happened to hit one up the middle that time. Well, now you just wonder if the Pirates are going to have Jared Triolo, the nine hitter, making his first start of this series, lay down a sacrifice bunt with two on and nobody out. I’m guessing he’s going to do that. The Deep Backs are thinking Taven’s way in. Suarez in a third. He squares and he bunts it foul. Triolo, who made his debut at 25 a couple years ago, has had at least one sacrifice punt, pardon me, he had two sacrificed bunts last year, 41 appearances for the Pirates. Of course, he’ll be trying to bunt this ball if he’s still bunning towards Suarez at third with guys on first and second as a right-handed bunner. That’s where you want to bunt it. Nothing in one count. Here comes the pitch. No, a step and a check. Gallon was looking more at the hitter as he turned his hips towards second base to see if he was squaring. P could probably even get in farther from first base. There’s the 01. He squares and Bunts foul again. Got two just phenomenal pitches to Bunt. The fast ball a little bit up in the zone. You don’t have to crouch far down to get it. Don’t have to stab at it. And he just deflected. Both of them fouled to the left. Yeah. Nowhere even close. Not good attempts at all. Now you can go for a strike out here. No balls, two strikes, and a pitch to Triolo blowing away. So if that’s your setup pitch, a slider down and away to the righty, how do you put him away here without allowing allowing this count to linger? I think he’s going to go with the curve ball. I think that’s kind of been his go-to pitch when he wants a strikeout. One, two now. Curve ball line into left field. A base hit. Both runners froze. They’re only going to move up 90 ft, but an 02 at bat after two failed bunt attempts turns into a single. And the bases are loaded with nobody out for O’Neal Cruz. Actually, not a bad pitch either. This ball was down right just a little under the strike zone, but he stayed with it. That’s just a good job of hitting. I think Gallon was almost expecting the strike out after throwing that pitch. I don’t blame him. That was a good pitch. Here comes Brian Kaplan, the pitching coach. Well, you just don’t want this game to get away from you right here. Give up a run and try to get out of it. don’t give up anymore. Maybe you don’t even give up any. But you certainly don’t want to pitch like the expectation is to give up none. want to pitch like you’re trying to get weak contact that you’re just willing to get out of this point because if you try to your point to just be pinpoint with the accuracy and you fall behind O’Neal Cruz that is one of maybe two guys in this lineup where a mistake pitch up in the zone has a good possibility of getting just clobbered. Well, that’s the one thing it’s he’s only what a 220 hitter or something, but he’s got that power factor and that’s where he can do some damage. But, you know, they’ve been making their pitches on Cruz. Everything been down. The curve ball has been a very effective pitch against him down and in. Allen ready. First pitch to Cruz and a check swing went around and that is going to make it 0 and one. Good pitch. Start him off with the curb. Down and in again. He chased it out of the zone. Just trying to be a little bit too aggressive. One- nothing Pirates. Here comes the 01. Missed low in with that curve ball. And that’s going to make it one ball and one strike. Nice catch by Herrera. That ball almost looked like it was going between the legs of Cruz. And Herrera got on that ball and caught it with a guy on third base. One ball, one strike, the count. Base is loaded. Nobody out in the top of the fifth. And Gallon’s one-1 pitch is taken for a strike. Snuck a cutter in there after all those curves. And that’ll make it one and two. Yeah. got the the benefit of the call that time on the cutter end, but a wellexecuted pitch right where he wanted to throw it. The one two curve ball just missed low and outside. Nice try there. It’s two and two. I got a feeling he’s going to stick with that curve. Cut it on deck. Two and two the count. Gallon. He throws and Cruz takes in the dirt and now the count is full. And this this is the thing prior to the game that was kind of talked about with Gallon. This is the real fear. You get ahead but then you let the bat linger where it runs full and now you kind of put yourself back against the wall. Yeah, I think Zach was just really relying on the fact that he that Cruz might chase that pitch. That’s what he wanted him to do. But now you got to be careful. And now the 3-2 curve ball. Big swing and a foul. And mercifully, it is still a 3-2 count. Yeah. And unfortunately, you have to throw the curve ball where if he doesn’t swing that it lands in the strike zone. That means you got to start it up a little bit. And when you do that, hitters can see it that much better. After that swing, I think you get away from the current cutter. Subscribe and hit the bell bell so you never miss an MLB broadcast. We go live every day. WBC, the show, the sports channel that belongs to God. Thanks for being part of the road to 100K. Cruz goes to second. It’s the second error of the day for Lawler. And now the Pirates have a three nothing lead. We’ve said many times when the ball’s hit to you, the number one thing to do is get an out. Lawler caught this ball. really didn’t have a play at second base. Really forced the issue and threw the ball away and that really puts Gallon in a very tough situation. I don’t know if it hit the runner. I think it did. I think it hit Triolo. Yeah, but either way, it was on the wrong side of the bag as Purdomo was on the outfield side of the bag and that ball was way on the inside part of the bag. Second and third, nobody out for McCutchen. And the first pitch, fast ball swung on and shot fouled to the right. So the Pirates have a three nothing lead here. Second and third. And again, if you’re gallon, you got to try and just make it so that only maybe one additional run comes home to score and not allow this to become a four or five run inning. Oh, one pitch. Breaking ball and a beauty. Swung on and miss. The count now nothing and two. It’d be a fieldielder’s choice by the way for Cruz. Gets to second on the E4. Second and third, nobody out and the O2 to McCutchen. Curve ball down. One ball, two strikes. Boy, sometimes as a pitcher, you just feel like you have to do it all on your own, you know, when you see defense like that. But he hasn’t had the strikeout pitch going. He’s what? Just one strikeout, I think, today. But you need to dial one up here. Triolo at third. Cruz at second. And here comes the one-two pitch. Strike three called. Locked him up. And a big first out of the inning. Great pitch. I mean, that was a good slider. Bottom of the zone and McCutchen just froze on it. I think he was expecting that to be more of a curve and tumble out of the zone. And that, like you said, sharp slider spin just sunk its teeth right in the bottom of the zone. One out now. Here is Reynolds. Reynolds reached on an E4. First pitch and he takes just low for ball one. Quick throw to third. Triolo back there safely. I know Reynolds has been kind of swinging a hot bat, but Gallon has really handled him in his career. Coming into this game, he’s one for 10 against Zack. 0 for two in this game. One pitch and that one is down. Two balls and no strikes. Two balls, no strikes, runners at second and third. the pitch. Breaking ball swung on and missed and they count two and one. Spit his money ball. Another good curveball by Gallon. As a pitcher in this situation, you are really trying to strike this guy out just like he was trying to do that with McCutchen. Here’s a 2-1 swing and a miss. A high heater and it’s now two and two. Gallon trying to buckle down here. Pirates already got a couple runs this inning. They lead it three to nothing. Well, you could try to get him to chase the curveball or go try to go upstairs again, but he wants to miss the bat. going for the punch out and that’s usually his curve ball. Two two pitch fast ball swung on and fouled away. A little bit late on it. Tells you he’s sitting something off speed. You’re going to read a hitter swing and what he does. He was well behind a fast ball there. I’ I’d like to see that slider again. Try and do the same thing you did to McCutch and make it look like the curve and then have it just hit the E brakes at the last second. Well, I think the right pitch to throw is either the slider, but more importantly, I think the cutter in. Here’s the 2-2 now. Fast ball just missed the corner. That’s going to make it a 3-2 count. Great pitch from Gallon. Oh, you can’t make a much better pitch. Unfortunately, the call didn’t go his way. That’s two pitches in a row. You know, Reynolds was looking on a for an offspe pitch. And now Gallon’s pitch count has exploded in this inning. He’s up to 73. He came into this inning having thrown 42. 3-2. Reynolds swings and foul tips it. That was a good curve. Yeah, same thing when it’s 3-2, the curveball that you throw has to end up in the strike zone. Otherwise, the guy takes it, you know, there’s a another walk. You can’t really afford to have him try to chase it like you can like maybe when it’s one and two or 0 and two. Another 3-2 from Gallon. Swung on. Ripped on a line first. Caught by Pavin. Oh man. 105 right at you and that’s the break that Gallon needed in this inning as they’re now two down for Canario. Oh, that ball was toasted and remember the infield’s playing in paving right on the grass and he caught this ball or maybe the ball caught him but good reactions and luckily caught that ball. So now two down after that E4. Yeah, that just saved two runs there easily. And here is Canario who has walked and grounded out. First pitch, Canario swings and misses. Gallon a little more fastball heavy as he is working through this pirate lineup for the third time and having some success with that fast ball. Little vintage. Yeah, that was power gets power. That was a big swing on a big fast ball. Trying to limit the damage to just two. And now the 01 pitch. Swing and a miss. The high heater. Gallon. He’s got options now ahead. No balls, two strikes. Yeah, he’s pretty much saying hit it if you can. He went upstairs with that heater. Well, he’s just opened up everything now. He can go upstairs a little higher or he can drop the curveball on the plate, throw the cutter off the plate away if he wants. 02 swing and a miss. Struck him out. Good morning, good afternoon, and good night to Canario. However, the Pirates, they score twice and we go to the bottom of the fifth inning. It’s now Pittsburgh Free. Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Boston with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went in right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the St. two and a home run by the Wizards. Smash that like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel. WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. two-run double and the Pirates not only with some good swings but some good breaks as well take a six nothing lead in and you could tell he was trying to hit it the other way and and he successfully got it inside the first base bag and cleared the bases. Here is Triolo. Nobody out. Runner at second and the pitch grounded sharply. It deflects off of the pitcher Mario. He’s going to have no play. He picks it up near short and now first and third and literally start to add injury to insult for the Dbacks. Well, it’s another fast ball and not in good fielding position as he’s a max thrower and alls he could do is really turn sideways and let that ball hit him and got him pretty good. Quick visit by the trainer, but seems to be all right. Just an unfortunate situation where again on the one hand when you see ground balls like that at that exit velocity, usually they’re supposed to be out. So you could argue it’s lucky, but at the same time the approach the Pirates have had offensively to call them lucky today would be a little insulting to what they’ve done to the Diamondbacks. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. First pitch, he swings and hits a chopper foul first base side. Cruz has been getting a lot of change ups and a lot of curve balls especially, but not against Mario. He’s where he’s sitting on that back leg hoping to get a fast ball and catch up with it. First and third, nobody out. 6 nothing Pittsburgh. And now the one pitch, runner goes. That is a late swing and miss. The throw by Herrera. Good one. Safe. Bang. Bang at the bag. Triolo’s fifth of the year and a pretty good toss from Herrera on that one. Sure was. I mean, he put that ball right on the base. It was a very close play, but he did get in and that’s going to force the Dbacks to get that infield in. Now, Pirates have scored now 15 unanswered runs against the Diamondbacks going into the sixth inning of last actually yeah the sixth inning of last night’s game. That one from Mario too high and it’s one and two. I mean these are the alarming numbers that have seemed to be swirling around the Diamondbacks. Everyone wins and everyone loses at some point. But the nature of how the Diamondbacks have lost as the one-two swing and a foul tip and Cruz down on strikes. Well, you needed that one. He just overpowered him with the fast ball. 99 passed him. But now on the flip side with a six nothing lead, skins at 74 pitches, assuming he doesn’t just completely lose all command, they can let him go seven or eight. Here’s McCutchen. First pitch swings, chops it towards third. Fair ball backhanded by Suarez. Bobbles, now has to course correct and go to first. They do get the out there, but a run comes home to score and Kirner Falefa and the lead up to seven. Well, again, he makes a nice pitch, but Kutchen hits a high little chopper. A nice play by Gino, but came up without the ball in his hand and it fell out of his hand and he was fortunate to recatch that ball and get the out at first. I don’t want to say it was fortunate that it worked out that way, but I think we can both agree that was going to be an extremely difficult throw on a non force out as now Reynolds the switch hitter takes outside for ball one. So credit McCutchen with his 15th RBI of the season. Two down, runner at third and the 10. Reynolds taking I don’t know where that enjoying the game. Subscribe and hit the bell bell so you never miss an MLB broadcast. I mean most we go live every day WBC the show the sports channel that belongs to God. Folded hands. Awful day for Brennan Miller. Thanks for being part of the road to 100K. Here comes a 20 high that time and that’ll make it bowl three. Three balls, no strikes that count. Rio’s 300 taken all the way and be called strike. It’s now three and one again. Big lead over at third base by Jared Triolo. Almost halfway down the line, Rio’s 3-1 pitch swung on, ripped into right field, a base hit. Carol took a step in, now slides. It gets past him, goes all the way to the wall. Reynolds powering past second on his way to third and Lawler’s throw is too late. It’s going to be an RBI triple and the lead now up to eight. Boy, almost 110 miles an hour off the bat. He just cranked that ball out there and it just ate Carol up and again it’s going to drive the run in. But as you watch this play, we’re watching our replay there. I mean, Carol’s going to his right. Kind of slides, but that ball is hit so hard it just gets by him. First pitch now. Canario swings and fouls it. And the count is snowballs and a strike. Boy, this is alarming. The 01 and Mario missed down low. One ball, one strike to count. Well, yesterday it was the the eighth inning. This is the sixth inning. And it’s not pretty. One-1 pitch swung on. That’s a hard hit ball to left field. Lordis is there. He’ll make the catch. The inning comes to an end. Pirates hang five on the Diamondbacks in the six. We go to the bottom of the sixth inning. It’s now eight nothing Pittsburgh on the Morgan and take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager sent the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Purdomo leads off against skins and his first pitch rushed in there at 97 into tight and they count one ball and no strikes. Talking stick resortation is back. Stay in play with rates as low as $129. Now the one that is swung on hit towards the gap in left center. Cruz racing over and on two feet. Tracks it down. It looked like he wasn’t even running hard and he made the play. It was like a glide almost like a gazelle out there. Remember Devon White? Oh yeah, that’s what it looked like right there. Just an easy glide and he was covering all kinds of ground to Rob Purdomo. Guriel one for two. Here comes the pitch and a strike called 0 and one the count. Guriel with a really nice base hit back in the first inning. Skins has only given up three hits as the 01 swung on and fouled. It’s now nothing and two. The Bags have an off day tomorrow and then they will welcome the Nationals to Chasefield. Be the final regular season matchup between those two teams. backs will be looking for some revenge after dropping two of three. Remember Arizona won the opener, but that was the game where Catel pulled his hamstring. They then lost the next two as this O2 pitch, swung on and fought off foul right side. Still no balls, two strikes. Well, I think they’re learning one big lesson is don’t overlook anybody. So you’re going against that Nationals team. They got a lot of good young talent. Breaking ball from skins miss law outside one ball and two strikes to count. Usually the thing about young teams that they might not always play winning baseball. They might not know which direction the wind is blowing. As the one two grounded up the middle to his left, Kiner Fa gloves and throw to first off target. Guriel safe. It’s almost like KPA had too much time. He caught this ball on a on a high hop. Plenty of time to throw Guriel out and just looked like he lobbed the ball across the diamond and there’s nothing Horwoods could do. He came off and tried to little swipe tag but was unsuccessful. Little break there for the Dbacks. They just need to try and churn out some runs. Well, one thing SK isn’t going to do is walk guys and give them, you know, extra base runners. You’re going to have to hit your way against him. First pitch, there’s a line drive. Bas into right field. Guriel had to freeze. He wasn’t going to get doubled up. He’ll stop at second. And now two on and only one out for Suarez. Nice swing by Naylor that time. Just a solid line drive. Look like a breaking ball. just kind of went down but had a lot of the plate and he got the barrel to this one. Now the first one to Gino and SK missed blowing outside. Final line for Gallon today. Five innings, six hits, six runs, five earned. He walked three and struck out three. 10. Swinging a miss. One ball and one strike. It looks like it’s going to be a much longer reclamation project of getting back to the form he once had. The walks continue to stay high and the strikeouts stay low. 1-1. There’s a swing and a liner to left, but it’s hooking and it ricochets off the net. Foul ball. One and two. Brian Thompson warming up in the bullpen. Beck’s down eight to nothing. An opportunity for him to try to get back on track. There’s the one two. Suarez swings. Tomahawks. the line drive to left and it goes right to the chest of Canario. He makes the catch and that’s a tough break there. Two outs on a good swing by Suarez. Yeah, he got on top of that fastful. The two seamer really coming into him. 97 on the radar gun and he barreled it too unfortunately just right to the left fieldielder Canario. Here’s Paving. Skins a look at second. Now comes home. Paven weekly rolls it right side. It is gloved by Triolo. Throws to first in time. The inning comes to an end and the Dbacks get an error and a single but cannot score. We’ve played six. It’s the Pirates. The Dbacks nothing. The Morgan and Morgan. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one in right down the line. It may go. And that’s what you’re hoping for Thompson. We know the kind of pitcher he has been for the Diamondbacks. He just needs to get straight. needs some innings and hopefully you can get something positive out of this game. First pitch strike to Spencer Horwitz. Down to nothing and one. It’ll be Horwitz Davis and then Kabrian Hayes. And now the 01 that is inside. One ball, one strike to count. It’s interesting, Gandandy, how much the last 10, 15 years, as the 1-1 pitch is off the plate away. How much data and statistics have infiltrated sports and strategy, and it’s not just baseball. Baseball certainly gets the most attention because it probably has the most stats that people care about. But look at what’s happened to football and basketball. That was a two-1 pitch. Swung on and fouled. Basketball’s become so much more dominated by three-point shooting because of really simple math, right? How to get back into games more quickly. What is considered a good shot football? It’s all about airing it out. Instant offense, trying to get points on the board rather than pounding ground, running it. Two two pitch, swing, and a miss. And Horwit strikes out. But saying all of that, there is still such a place in sports for momentum, right? This idea of good play and bad play being contagious. And the Diamondbacks seem to be mired in something. And it’s not just a stream of injuries like it was last year. And it’s not just a couple of bad breaks. And I believe Tori when he says that this is a good baseball team or or vice versa. I don’t think this collection of players is a bad roster. Not at all. But they are playing some bad baseball right now. Here’s the pitch and Henry Davis takes a strike. Count as nothing and one. And you played for a long time and you probably know what sparks and moments are where momentum changes for a group. Dbeback’s certainly in need of that. You know, I’ve been on some good teams and and some bad teams. And you know, from where you’re going with that, sometimes a team needs a spark. Back in my day when you’re playing, it was usually drilling somebody and starting a fight. It doesn’t happen anymore. Here’s the 1-1. And that’s a strike called. It’s now one and two. But something, you know, for the team just needs to needs some kind of spark spark to really create some enthusiasm and and kind of just smash that like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and let more fans like you discover the channel. Easy one to follow as WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. Two and two Pirates lead eight to nothing because when you’d have an on the- field brawl, it would literally force you and your teammates to fight for one another. literally if not fighting to win the game. Literally fighting a bunch of dudes on the other side of the chalk as two- two pitch. Swing and a miss and Thompson with backto-back strikeouts. Nice little sweeper that time and not that we’re advocating on fight at all. You know, another thing that used to happen a lot is managers back then would come out and purposely get ejected and throw a show. And you remember the old clips of Earl Weaver or Lorta or, you know, Sparky Anderson, Bobby Cox, Course of Legends. You just get Brian Hayes. First pitch to him and Thompson delivers a beauty. He so far has reached twice. A walk in the fifth, a single in the six. Scored a couple of runs as well. Here comes the 01 pitch. And that one outside. Making some good pitches. That one just yanked a little bit. Hoping to get Hayes to chase that ball. Top of the seventh. Eight nothing Pirates lead. Here comes the 1-1 pitch and Thompson that time just overcooked the slider. It’s now two and one. Certainly heard prior to the game today that changes are coming for the Diamondbacks on the roster side of things as a 2-1 is outside for ball three. Three and one. And I assume that just given where we are in the season right now, those changes will be inhouse. But at a a certain point, you probably start have to being a bit more aggressive looking to other organizations and seeing if you can acquire as a 3-1 pitch. There’s a swing and a foul and the count now full here on Cabrian Hayes. I mean, you’re almost here at the beginning of June, you know, and that’s always a good little gauging point for teams to see where you’re at. You’ve played enough games to see where you’re deficient and, you know, where you’re really good, what you’re really clicking on. Now, just to go back to a previous point, how many of those fights did you start? Not too many. They always let the hard the the guy that threw hard come in and do that. It was on the bottom of the pile a few times though. 32 swung on and Weakley chopped up the third baseline and that’ll spin foul. Had some English on it. I purposely was told once by Joe Carter, we were teammates with the Blue Jays and we had something going on with the Tigers and uh our leadoff hitter um at the time was uh Robbie Alamar at time. And so Robbie just got plunked. I forget who was pitching or Dan Petri for the uh Tigers. And Carter comes up to me and he says, “Don’t you throw at somebody.” 3-2 strike three called. And how about Ryan Thompson? He strikes out the side in order here in the seventh. Great sign to see. And as we go to the bottom of the seventh, Ebags with their work to do. They trail the Pirates 8 nothing. See if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is Apo Taco. Do you know what it means? AO taco. Keen still on the mound for the Pirates as one to Alec Thomas. Swung on and missed. Defense counted one ball and one strike. Bottom of the seventh means the seventh inning stretch is brought to you by Arizona Complete Health. Transforming the health of the community, one person at a time will be Thomas Lawler and Herrera. 1-1 rolled over to first gloved by Spencer Horowitz. He goes to the bag himself and there’s now one down. Alec rolling over the top of that one. We really like it when we start seeing him hit the ball the other way. Left center field, left field. It just keeps him back instead of rolling over the top of one. Well, here is Lawler. Been a real tough day for him. A strike out, a foul out, two errors on the field. The average hasn’t changed. It’s 0 for 18 for him. Let’s see if he can get that first hit right now. Get that first knockoff skins. He takes the first pitch. That one a little bit high and count one ball, no strikes. That actually be a nice little centerpiece on your mantle. One pitch. There’s a strike. Nobody on. One out. And Ski’s ready. Right-hander is 1-1. Lawler takes that one just low. Nice eye to count. Two balls and a strike. I’d really like to see Lawler just zone up on a pitch in a location that he wants rather than looking a little reactive to what the pitcher’s throwing at 2-1. That one is outside for ball three. Three balls in a strike. Try to nip the outside corner on him. You know, we’ve seen Skings really just try to power the ball, but it looks to Lawler like he’s trying to spot the ball. Here comes his 3-1 pitch. Lawler swings and fouls it back. Full count. One out. Nobody on. Skins. The right-hander is 3-2 pitch. Swung on. Grounded left side. It is backhanded by Ker Felpa. The throw to first in time. And now two down for Herrera. Connor Paleppa doesn’t have the great arm. He gets the ball at shortstop and just kind of throws it on the run, but he’s not rifling it across the diamond. He just kind of floats it. Looks like that’s going to be it for Paul SK. Don Kelly is manager out and with the Pirates eight to nothing. No need to risk it. Call to the bullpen brought to you by Sanderson Ford. X skipper Tory Lavell talks with Burns and Gambo Friday afternoons at 2:30 on Arizona Sports 987 in the Arizona Sports app. Well, the Pirates have brought in veteran left-hander Caleb Ferguson. Ferguson in his first season with the Pirates is making already his 26th appearance. One and0 record, a 397 ERA. Two outs, nobody on. The Pirates lead this finale by a score of 8 to nothing. And it’ll be Jose Herrera coming up to face Ferguson. Left-handers first pitch is a strike call. That one at the top of the zone. So, it’s six and two/3 shutout innings for Skins in this one. He struck out seven Diamondbacks, allowed just four hits, and did not walk a batter. Yeah, that’s the key stat. Didn’t walk anybody. The 01 pitch and it’s outside. One ball, one strike. Well, I guarantee you Herrera is happy the skins is out of the game. 0 for two with two punch outs. Looking 1-1 way inside that time. Two balls, one strike. The count. Nobody on. Two men down. And the two-1 pitch swung on. That’s a rifle shot to left. That’s going to get down and it’s cut off by Canario. Nearly split the gap. That would have been extra bases, but Herrera with a rocket shot for a two-out single. Very nicely done hitting from the right side now. Just drills an inside fast ball which probably looks really slow after skis comes out of the game and and barrels it out towards left center field. Corbin Carroll one for three with a double and the first pitch. O inside. It nearly hit him. One ball, no strikes to count. See one swing of the bat here. Give him two runs. Eight nothing Pirates. The 10 swung on and a fly ball to left. Coming in is Canario and he makes the catch. The inning is over. No runs a hit, no errors, a man left. We’ve played seven in the desert and it’s all Pittsburgh Pirates eight, Dbacks nothing on the Morgan. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Arizona sports app. Top of the eighth inning and the Dbacks going to bring up a new pitcher in right-hander Scott McGuff called to the bullpen. Brought to you by Sanderson Ford. Best play in New Ford. Is it Anderson Ford? McGuff this year making his fifth appearance. Three strikeouts, three walks in five innings. hasn’t allowed an earned run. Got some help from Justin Martinez last time out. Walked a couple guys. Bases loaded, nobody out. Martinez got out of the jam. And now McGuff’s first pitch is off the plate away. You know, when you think about that game, too. You know, that really affected yesterday’s game in the factory, the first game, second or second game because Martinez wasn’t able to come in that game. 10 pitch from a Guffalo Loan outside for ball two. Two balls, no strikes. It all adds up, right? And you every need everyone kind of pulling in the same direction. Something we heard from the manager earlier today as a two- swung on that one hit towards deep left center field. Long run Guriel that is going to get over his head and it’s going to one hop over the left center wall. Ker FVO with a ground rule double to get the eighth inning started. Center cut fast basketball that time. That was right down the heart of the plate. Palefa just hit a high line drive. He barreled it and it just bounced over. So runner at second, nobody out. Dex fans, you can watch all Dback games in market both live and on demand during the 2025 season for only $89.99 a year with dbcks.tv presented by Progressive. Subject to national exclusivities. This is where we like to see Scott really put him away here. Throw your best pitch. That was a splitter there. He fouled off. So now you can go upstairs high and come back with a splitter or just go right after him with a splitter. two balls, two strikes, and that pitch is down low. One ball, two strikes, the count. One thing you want to do, you just want to keep the game and the score right where it’s at. I mean, look what the Pirates did yesterday with seven runs in one inning. Here’s the one, two swing and a miss. He struck him out and that was an A+ splitter from McGuff. Very good one. I mean, he just went straight splitter the last couple. That was an excellent one. Top of the order now and O’Neal Cruz. Cruz right now hanging his hat on an 0 for four today with two strikeouts. He has struck out quite a bit this series. D backs have really pitched him well. The pitch here swung on high. Fly ball out into right field. Carol drifting back at the fence and gone. It is a home run for O’Neal Cruz. His 12th of the year. And now the Pirates lead by double digits. It is 10 to nothing. Well, they’ve been throwing the ball inside the Cruz and down. This time it was a little inside, but it was elevated and that’s where he likes it. That ball 109 miles an hour off the bat and it had enough backspin to get out of here. Just hung it. You talked all week long it felt like against Cruz if you have that pitch a little bit down, a little bit in, he can’t get to it. That one was up and he got to it. Now McCutchen goes after the first pitch and he comes up empty. I mean the Pirates candy since that 6 nothing lead for the Dbacks. They’ve outscored Arizona 19 to nothing. Oh man, the 01. There’s a strike called. It’s 0 and2. One on, nobody out. And now McGuff. His O2 pitch. Swung on. Fly ball into shallow right. Carol hustling towards the line and makes the catch. Now two down for Brian Reynolds. Good hustle by Corbin Carroll running a long ways to track that ball down, make the play. Foul fly out for McCutchen. Reynolds tonight. He’s one for four with a triple. Here’s the pitch. And McGuff missing low that time with a splitter. Heavy usage on the splitter in this game here for McGuff. It seems like he’s been throwing a lot more sliders as of late, but he’s going splitter heavy here. Former Washington National Tanner Rainey is now getting warm for the Pirates. Here’s the 10 swinging a foul tip. Went back to the splitter. We kind of like the slider that McGuff was showcasing. Now, that might just be a pitch that he throws to the right-handers. Very typical for guys to have that secondary stuff break away from the batter, but even still just something to get off of the fast split combo. Well, it’s always good to have that third pitch. Just something you could throw. You can get over first strike, steal a strike early, you know, get the count in your favor and then go to work. Fast missed on the 1-1. I mean, even Martinez has a slider. I think we’d all agree that slider is his third best pitch, but he’ll still just throw it just to show you that it’s there. And if you don’t respect it, you might have a strike stolen. Yeah, especially on the first pitch. Get to 0 and one. And that one is low. Ball three. Three balls, one strike count. Rainey’s had his struggles. Five runs allowed in five and two/3 innings. He has struck out six, walking only three, and he’s given up more hits than innings pitched, but he’s got quite the cushion to work with here. Pirates lead is 10. And with one out, nobody on base. The batter Lordis Guriel Jr. first pitch and Guriel takes down low. made a good point earlier about how Guriel’s been swinging the bat. He’s been having really kind of coming out of it. Had a nice series here against the Pirates. One pitch, swinging a miss. He’s been coming out of it. I think it’s fair to say Moreno has had a great month of May. Yeah, most of Catel I believe all of Catel’s home runs have come in May. That’s unfortunate right now. He’s down with the flu and has been the last two days. Has the 1-1 swing and a miss again. It’s now one ball and two strikes. I mean, look, it’s a it it is a team game. You win with your team, you lose with your team, but when you start to kind of go through the departments, there’s some problems that are arising as this one two is down low. Two balls, two strikes on the pitching side of things. And there has been a stretch here this past week, week and a half, certainly in St. Louis where Dbacks could have scored more runs. It looked to be a little light in the situational hitting runners in scoring position. Two pitch swung on, popped up first base side and given a look is Horwitz. He will not have a play. Smash that like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel. doesn’t WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support it’s a non-starter with the aspirations for this team that area just has to improve and I’m sure it will but right now it doesn’t feel good and it shouldn’t two swinging a miss scuriel strikes out and now two down for Josh Naylor when you look at our schedule coming ahead in June. It gets a little bit light, especially towards the second half of the month and you want to make sure you’re playing really good baseball at that time to really take advantage of it. Naylor two hits in his last two at bats. He’s two for three. Here’s the pitch. Thought about it. Takes a strike. Rainey still has that good velocity and a half. It’s 0 and one. Two outs, nobody on. And here comes the 01 pitch. Reached for. Slap towards short. Connor Falefa shuffles and then unccors the throw to first in time. It’s a one, two, three inning for the Diamondbacks in the eighth. For those of you who are losing their minds right now wondering why is Shelby in the Because he hasn’t pitched in a game since the Dodgers, relax. Yeah. And you got an off day tomorrow. Miller three and one with a two on a ERA. First pitch swung on and missed. Down is nothing and one. It’ll be Canario Horwitz and then Davis. Chance for Miller to get some light work in have the off day to be reset and then ready to go in the opener against the Nationals. Joel’s 01 swung on that one fouled into the mesh netting and the count is 0 and two. Well, I imagine it will be a reflective off day for many for the Diamondbacks. There’s the O2 swung on and a slow ground ball third base side. That’s a foul ball. Well, I certainly believe that the off day is really coming at a good time for this team right now. I mean, after this series here, I mean, just mentally, I think this team could really use that off day and they’re going to get it. Here’s the O2 pitch. Swing and a miss, and Miller strikes out Canario here in the ninth inning. It it feels a little bit like how in basketball when a team goes on a a 10, 12, 14 to nothing run and the coach calls timeout, right? You you’re just trying to put a stop and a reset. And I think that’s what the off day, like you said, is going to do. Just you’re right. If if the Dbacks were in a stretch where they still had about nine more games and nine more days, you’d feel a little anxious about how the next week might go as now we see a pinch hitter. Nick Solak wants a prospect with the Rays. Here he is with the Pirates. Right-handed hitter and he looks at a called strike. So like hitting in the spot of first baseman Spencer Horwitz. One out. The 01. Soak swings and misses. And now the count is 0 and two. 10 nothing Pirates. Nobody on and Shel’s O2 pitch too high. One ball, two strikes. But I do think as well with a hopefully a fresh mind. There will be some new names on the roster for the Dbacks. Come ready for that opener on Friday against the Nationals. There’s the one two. Shelby just missed outside. 98 on the fast ball velocity. Two balls, two strikes. Good bopped it right up there. Two and two. The count and now the pitch. Soft line drive right to the second baseman Lawler. He makes the chest high catch. Only 69.4 miles an hour off the bat and there are two down. The batter will be Henry Davis. One of these outings here like this for Shelby, you want him to get his work in, but you certainly don’t want him to get taxed at all. So for him, it’s just seeing how the ball’s feeling. Just kind of keeping the feel of things. Davis takes the first pitch high. Go out there, throw some strikes. That’s what he’s done. 10 pitches, seven in the zone. Davis two for four. Shelby’s 10. Swing and a miss. He doesn’t wear any batting gloves, does Davis? But he does have this interesting tape that runs up his hand. It looks like a shield actually. Make sure that if he does get hit by the pitch on the hand that the protection absorbs it. Now that one a little low. Good pitch though. Two balls, one strike. Joey with a kind of a smirk on his face. Couldn’t believe it. That one looked like it was actually a little bit out of the zone. Two outs and now the two-1 pitch. And Davis swings and pops it up left side of the infield. Perdomo camped underneath it and he will make the grab. And that’s going to do it for the Pirates here in the ninth. Last chance for the Diamondbacks. They trail 10- nothing on the Morgan and Morgan Dbacks radio network. Join the Dbacks for Father’s Day on Sunday June. Safe at home with Blue Sky Pest Control, the official pest control provider for the Arizona Diamondbacks in Chase Field. They won. Lawler swings and misses and now down nothing and two. Well, this is going to be a learning time for Lawler as he has discovered not quite ready for what Major League Baseball requires. The 02 that’s low. One ball and two strikes. Well, the way he was really swinging it down in TripleA, he was tearing the cover off the ball. No doubt, but it’s a big adjustment. One ball, two strikes, two outs. And now the pitch in the dirt. Couple of balls, couple of strikes. Be the second opportunity to kind of go back down and and hopefully remain healthy. That was the big problem. There’s the 2-2 swung on. That one hit high and deep down the left field line. Is it fair or foul? It is. Well, it sure looked good off the bat, too. But it just ran out of steam and ended up foul over the Dback’s bullpen. Just got one right down the middle. Center two with a change up that time. Actually splitter low and away. And the count is full. Barucky doing a lot of nibbling here except for the pitch. Two pitches ago. That was a Thanksgiving turkey. Yes. 3-2 and he walked him. Two out walk and Lawler aboard for Jos Herrera. Yeah, he had a pitch to hit. just missed the home run and then worked the count, drew the walk. Nice at bat. And bring up Herrera. Herrera with a base hit his last time up. First pitch, Herrera takes outside. That’s ball one. Lawler gets to second on defensive indifference. Pirates 10. Dexs one here. Two outs. Bottom of the ninth inning. But a chance now for Herrera to pick up an RBI with a base hit as the one inside for ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Two outs, a runner at second, and Barack throws and deals a strike. It’s now two and one. The two slider. He got that one in there. And now Herrera going to use his timeout. Herrera that last time up. Remember he nailed that ball in the seventh inning out to left center. Really hit that well against the lefty. That was against Ferguson. Pirates going to continue their road trip out west to the Padres’s. As now he swings and cues it foul right off the end of the bat. It’s now two balls and two strikes. After that three-game series, the Pirates come home and a tricky home stand. They take on the Astros, the Phillies, and then the Marlins to really kick off their month of June. Two two pitch. Arizona Sports 987 and the Arizona Sports app. Well, obviously another tough one, Candy, for the Diamondbacks. They lose 10 to one and and going into the game. It was advertised as a strong pitching matchup and in the early going it was. I thought Gallon those first three, four innings was throwing the ball pretty well. Obviously, Paul Skins was holding up his end of the bargain. But the one thing that had kind of concerned us about Gallon and about the diamond bags as well, the number of walks issued and the number of walks scored. And when you look at the second inning, when you look at the fifth inning, and you look at the sixth inning with Gallon on the mound, all three of those innings began with leadoff walks. And all of them eventually came home for the Pirates. Yeah, that’s those are stingers. Those walks like that, especially those leadoff walks. And you know, Zach was battling through. He had a tough umpire really to work with. Both pitchers really did. But the third time through it really kind of got him when he gave up that that five spot, you know, and when you’re kind of doing the numbers on him, he’s struggled the third time through the order this year. You know, the hitters hitting 276 against him and and even this lineup the P the the Pirates are throwing out there. It’s just a lineup that’s full of uh power and speed and good contact hitters. You should be able to navigate through this one. And and he just couldn’t do it. That lead off walk got him and then you know they just added on to him and uh you know got him out of the game. Couple of big extra base hits. You could take your pick either Ker Fa’s double or the triple by Reynolds. Either one of those. Our launch of the game inspired by Honeywell. Honeywell the future is what we make it. And look Andy, we we could dive into this one right about what went wrong and what went right. And it’s all very redundant what’s happened for the Dbacks over the last two weeks. But but give our listeners something that we don’t have. what it’s like to be on a team that’s going through a struggle right now for the Arizona Diamondbacks and tell us how you think this team is going to find its way out of it because we know that there’s a lot more talent in the tank than what we have seen to wrap up the month of May. Well, I I wish I had the answer to that. You know, it’s really hard when you’re not down in the locker room with with everybody, but you know, more often than not, you know, it becomes it c can become a confidence problem when you’re actually waiting for bad things to happen instead of like creating good things to happen sometimes. And we kind of mentioned this earlier in this game is you need a some kind of spark, somebody to do something to break up a double play to, you know, something. It seems to get guys going, teams going, and uh and this, like we said, this day off is coming at just the right time for these guys. and and they can just kind of take an emotional break on it and and get things going because you want to start playing well for a
