🔴LIVE 🔴Los Angeles Dodgers VS Cleveland Guardians /Mlb May 28/ /MLB THE SHOW 25
baseball on MLB The Show. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the Cleveland Guardians. And now, please welcome. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Cleveland. All right, just about set to go. And today on the hill, Tanner Bby, what’s the scouting report on him? Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Kik Hernandez. That pitch gets the corner. And we’re underway in [Applause] Cleveland. Highfly ball down the left field line. Out of here. A home run off the foul pole. The first batter of the game leaves the yard and that gives them a lead. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Well, you got to love a game that brings some action from the jump. And at the plate, he was looking for a pitch to absolutely drive. And you know, leadoff hitters aren’t up there anymore just working the count, trying to get on. They’re looking to make some noise and do some damage. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one hops the wall. Now he’ll turn for second and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. As soon as that one shot off his barrel, he was thinking extra bases. Really nice job of getting the bat out front, but not hooking around it or rolling over and just kept the swing on plane and smoked that thing into the gap. And here’s Freddy Freeman. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Comes up empty. Betts leads off second with nobody out. Just off the inside edge. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That’s inside. Gets a piece and stays alive. And that one a little bit high. Runner at second. Nobody out. and ball four to a board. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. First and second, no outs. Teascar Hernandez steps to the plate for the D. Oh, now this ball’s going to get through and that’s base hit. Bett scores. It’s two nothing and they throw on the brakes at third with no intention of testing the strong arm and right. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And now it’s Max Muny. His next home run will be the 200th in his career. It would be pretty cool to see it right here. There’s the strike. Muny with just one more homer to reach the 200 career mark. You know, we usually talk about bigger numbers when it comes to homers, but only about 400 major leaguers have ever hit 200 roundt trippers in their careers. He’s putting himself in great company. And a count one and two. That one is absolutely belted. One runs in and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard. In comes the run from second and it’s four nothing. Got to be feeling great about that double. Big spot and he drives in too. put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahes. [Music] And first off is fouled off. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. Give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, clear game plan coming in this one. Be aggressive against this starter. Try to knock him out of this ball game. And it looks like they’re on their way to doing that. Get into the bullpin a little bit early. Could be a great offensive day. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. And it’ll be first and third now after that miscue. Muny up to third on the wild pitch. I feel like that’s one of those rules in baseball that’s tough to explain the logic behind if you’re talking to a new fan or someone trying to learn the game. It’s like, wait, what? The batter struck out, but he still gets to be on first base. Yeah, I hear you. It’s a weird one. Plus, the pitcher gets credit for the strikeout. It’s an over for the batter. But of course, no out is actually recorded. kind of one of those just trust me, let’s move on situations. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. Hit on the ground might be two. There’s one and a run scores on the double play. Batting eight now. The catcher up to hit. Dalton rushing. swing and a miss as he was late that time. On the ground, Ramirez. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring, but they take the lead thanks to a fiveun outburst. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Dodgers five and the Guardians nothing back here in Cleveland. And our starting pitcher here today, Dustin May. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Steven Quan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. May fires. That one’s in there. And that is strike one. I got a ball. One strike. Come on, Steve. This to third. Muny whips it to first on the run. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Here’s the Guardians lineup now. One guy leading the way offensively for this club. And he’s leading them in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big. They feel like all this pressure. I’ve got to get these runs in. But somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So, watch out when he comes to the plate. Baylor the next to hit. Takes ball one. One out. Base is empty. And that one missing low. [Applause] may come set and that’s in there at the knees. Let’s go Cleveland. Good eye in that spot. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it and he walked him. Oh, he earned his trip to first right there. It’s not easy laying off pitches that just miss the zone like that. And it’s a real discipline as well. He’s put a lot of work into that aspect of his game and it paid off right there. Here’s Jose Ramirez and first offering is fouled off. Let’s go Jose. And that one sliced fouled. He’s getting the barrel to the ball. Just got to work on that timing a little bit. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Let’s keep it going. And that just misses. Outside low and that’s ball two. Man at first, one away. [Music] Got him looking now. Two away. Batting fourth. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Kyle Manzardo. Manardo. That misses. Ball one. Naylor off of first with two away. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike and the count even at one. Next offering is fouled back. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And that ends the inning. One left for the Guardians. It’s 5 nothing. here in Cleveland. Top of the second and at the plate for the Dodgers, Tommy Edmond. Edmond in his sixth season, hitting ninth in today’s lineup. And he was a sixth round draft pick back in 2016. And that one is inside. And it’s fouled away. The 1-1 and that is out of play. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. So the batting order turns over. Kik Hernandez at the plate. He’s already homered here in this one. And first off is fouled off. Hernandez, versatile player, can play all over the infield and the outfield. And there’s a ball. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson to Sboo, but I’d ask permission first before I call him that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? Next pitch is outside. Singi, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away, and down. And why? Those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. Base hit. That was smoked through the infield. So, a man aboard now with one away. Short stop. Mookie bets. Mookie digs in here. One for one with a double and a run scored. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Runner on the go. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Santana makes the grab. Out number two. First baseman. Freddy Freeman. Here comes Freddy Freeman up to hit. He reached out to walk his first time. When he steps into the batter’s box, the comfort level looks so high. It doesn’t matter what kind of delivery that pitcher has, what kind of velocity, what kind of secondary stuff. He is so settled in there. He owns the home plate area. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Now batting. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Tanner by done for the day and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. A new pitcher in the game, Cade Smith. He’s pitching on two days rest. [Music] [Applause] And now Tay Oscar Hernandez doubled his first time up and that one hammered gone. So he goes yard to left and they add on. It’s eight nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side, as a hitter, it’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. Foul ball there. Two down to that pitch in for a strike. And the count is 0 and two. outside corner got him looking. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now an eight nothing game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now at Progressive Field. Bottom half of inning number two. So in now for Cleveland. Carlos Santana, one of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list, elite defensive first baseman. May back to work just off the inside edge. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. And that’s in for a strike. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles them so well. So he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. Next offering is outside. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. May delivers, fans another, and that’s three straight strikeouts. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the heartst boring in on his hands. Daniel Schneman digs in for the Guardians. Pitches in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Remember Mark Katse? was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Let’s go Cleveland. The pitch line drive and that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second and that’s a two bagger. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that atbat. Hooked around that pitch on the outside but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely and that takes quick strong wrist to pull that off. Gabrielle Arias digs in for the Guardians. And first offering is fouled off. Schneer at second with one away and that one fouled off. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Got him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Now, here’s Nolan Jones. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two outs and one in scoring position. That one finds the zone and a count one and one. Just missed. [Applause] Let’s go Cleveland. Fast ball for a strike. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Man at second. That one the other way. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Guardians leave one. And they’re on the short end of an eight nothing score. onto the third inning. And now the center fielder, Andy Pah. And a sweeper misses for a ball. fought off foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one a little bit high and a count. Two on one. Next offering is fouled back. Outside low and a full countdown swing get a ball popped up. Schne [Applause] carous it. One down. Now batting leftielder Michael Conorto. Michael Conforto will climb in. He’s 0 for one. Just off the outside edge. One and0. And another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 20, he’s put himself in a really good spot. Next offering is in for a strike. Swang and a miss. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and now two gone. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Cleveland rushing stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Boo, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike one. The 1-1 is fouled off way inside. And that hit him. He had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. And here comes Tommy Edmond. went down on strikes his first time through. That one finds the zone. Strike one in the dirt. Cleveland drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and no one can get there. Coming home, the relay to the plate. Safe and they now lead by nine. Up next for the Dodgers, the designated hitter, Kik Hernandez. Back to the top of the Dodgers order. Enrique Hernandez digs in now. He’s already homerred in this game. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] That one ripped right center field and it one hops the wall. Runner from second scores as they add on. Safe at second with a double. Third hit for him this afternoon and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. Man in scoring position with two away. Now it’s Mookie Betts. That’s in there. Going one. Hernandez stands at second with two gone. Swang in a highf fly ball hit in the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. Quan makes the play and that is that. So, it’s two runs on two hits, no errors, and a runner left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Dodgers 10 and the Guardians nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Now, here is Anel Martinez. First pitch misses. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. Smoke to right center and this one’s going to go out of here. Third home run of the season. It’s 10-1. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time, took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. [Applause] At the plate, Steven Quan grounded out his first time. Strike one. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Rip to third. Go, go, go. Throws across the diamond. One away. That ground ball may have him back on track after the homer. Catcher Bo Naylor. Bo Naylor at the plate now. Walked his first time. Line drive to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoke, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more backspin. Now it’s Jose Ramirez struck out looking at his first at bat. He was late there. Strike one. He normally does damage on that pitch in that location just to swing a miss there. I don’t think he want to throw it again though. just missed. Swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. BS it off. Still one and two. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. He picks up his fifth strikeout on the hill. Solo shot for the Guardians this inning. And this is now a 10-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Freddy Freeman. Let’s go Cleveland. And that’s a little bit high. Ball one. All right, Ziggy. Trivia time. Back when this ballpark opened 1994, one future Hall of Famer hit the first triple in the park and another hit the first homer by a Cleveland player. Think you know what they were? Okay, I know that Ken Griffy Jr. hit the first triple here, but first homer for Cleveland. Give me a hint. Switch hitter. That’s all you’re getting. Oh, dude. Eddie Murray, no doubt. Bam. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Second walk of the game for him. and he’s been really patient at the plate. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. So, a man at first. Tay Oscar Hernandez steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Swing and a miss as he was late. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. That one finds the zone and the count is 0 and two. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count. Just to pour it back. Here’s Muny to hit. one home run shy of 200 for his career and the first pitch misses for ball one. One thing with Max Muny and it’ll be interesting to see what he throws here. He hammers the fast ball. That one missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Freeman the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Thought the green light might be on right there, but maybe not. If you’re looking to swing in that count, that’s the pitch you want. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. [Applause] Cleveland strike three and that’s two in a row. Now batting Andy Pah steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Bowl for two in this one. In the air out towards right center. Martinez sizing this one up and that is that. So it’s no runs, no hits, no errors and one man left to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Dodgers 10 and the Guardians won. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. All right, Sigy, we’ve been in all the press boxes. You got best press box food. Uh, I’d say press box food because of the ice cream. We have to Philadelphia. Shout out to our guy Frank. Yes. Uh, New York for me is pretty good. Yankees. Yeah. Solid. Yeah. As far as ballpark food, one of my favorite places is San Francisco. Garlic fries. Yo, garlic fries. And you got the lobster roll out there in the outfield if you want to make the walk all the way out there. It’s great though broadcasting a game with that zoo breath where you could just I mean absolutely levitate some people with your with your breath. Got a good eye there. What do we got? The crab fries in Philadelphia. Is that right? Yep. And then it’s been a long time for me. Boogs Barbecue at Oral Park. I knew you’d go there. That’s right. Yeah. Anyway, you can work in your name, huh? That’s right. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. His 11th of the year. It’s 10-2. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. And now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana. [Applause] Fouled off left side. Swang and a highf fly ball. Well struck left field. That’s back and it one hops the wall safely into second. He’s got a double. Yeah, this was a really nice swing. Didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here, but once it got over his head in left field, it was extra bases all the way. So, a man aboard and up next for Cleveland, Daniel Schneman doubled in his first AB. That clips the corner. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball left field. Confordo hauls it in and there’s one away. You think back to 2017 and Cleveland set a major league record. 22 consecutive wins they had. It was capped off with a 10inninging walk-off win. Pretty amazing streak and a big part of the history of this yard. This one in the air. Muny under it. Hauls it in. Two away. Boo. And I remember early in that season covering them and talking to their staff and players and they didn’t feel like they had really clicked yet. Now, when I went back to do some research, looking at metrics like base runs, I realized they weren’t scoring runs at the rate in which the data was saying they should be at. So, the numbers were saying it was just a matter of time until they would take off. Little did we know that it would convert into a 22game winning streak and it took the baseball world by storm. I love when you talk nerd to me. Man on second, two down. Fast ball in for a strike and a count even one and one on the ground to third and it stays fair. Coming home boots it. He will score and he’ll pull into second safely. Not stopping. He’s going for three. [Applause] Two outs with a man at third. Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. One more. Let’s go. Rudder at third. Two away. Next pitch is outside. Let’s go. Some heat there at 98 miles an hour. So, two runs on three hits, including the home run. One error and one left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Dodgers 10 and the Guardians three. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Luis Ortiz. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. The batter will be Michael Conorto. Leftielder Michael Conorto. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Conforto goes 5 ft 11 in 200 now. A rocket to right center way back there and forget it. It’s out of here. His second homer of this series and they add to the lead. It’s 113. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. And here’s the catcher. Dalton rushing. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Just missed. Movement in the pen for the Guardians. Slade Sakone preparing to come on if needed. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re at the top of the fifth. That’s a strike [Applause] inside. And that’s ball three to the right side. One away here in the fifth. Now batting second base Tommy Edmond. Tommy Edmond at the plate. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Swinging a foul out of play. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. And that one inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. So the lineup flips over. Here’s Kik Hernandez. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Right through there for a strike. Pitch is in there. 0 and2 now. Wow. That’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it. Second with one gone. Short stop. Mookie Betts. Mookie Betts will make his way to the plate. One for three. The shorts stop takes a ball. Edmond the lead runner out at second. Hernandez at first. One gone. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. the one two and down on strikes. Two down. Here’s Freddy Freeman now. This guy makes great contact. One of the best in the game and putting bat on ball. He’s got such quick hands and he’s gaining pitch recognition that keeps him square to the plate. There’s a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time and that produces solid contact consistently. Two outs. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Reaching for it and brings it in. Solo shot for the Dodgers this inning. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. So, the Guardians lineup turns over. stepping up for the Guardians. Steven Quan has grounded out a couple of times. May back to work that missed inside and it’s one and0. Clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Bone Naylor. Now the number two hitter, Bone Naylor. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And that’s in for a strike. One down. Base is empty. That misses. And one and one. And there’s a ball. All right, Cleveland. Slapped foul. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five and Big Red gets his second strike out of the game. Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is fouled back. Cleveland. Two down. Doon. That’s hard hit in the line. That’s a fair ball. And it’s getting into the corner around first. Heading for two. And he’s in there standing up with a two out double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians. [Music] in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Do it again. Man at second. And now the count is even. Movement in the bullpen. Number 78 looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Number 86 also throwing man on second. Two down and one fouled off. Cleveland and a ball in two strikes on the inside corner for called strike three. One left for the Guardians. Still 11 to three. Here’s Tay Oscar Hernandez. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Right through there for a strike. Well, at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases in safely with a double. His second of the day with that fast ball. Even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges. When it’s right on a te right down the middle, professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. So, a man aboard. Here’s Max Muny. That funky Muny. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Hernandez at second with nobody out. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball two. That one pushed to the left and fouled. You got this swing and a miss for the strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Now batting. So digging in Andy Pah 0 for three in this one. [Music] Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third. There’s a ball transfer bobbled and there’s no throw. They are merciless. I’d say a questionable decision to steal third right there with a big lead. Probably won’t be received well in the other dugout. Next offering upstairs. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. A two-run shot. Home run number 10 on the year and they add a pair. It’s 133. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Could be pretty dangerous when you fall behind in the count 20. You’ve still got to try to find a way to keep that hitter off balance. Well, he wasn’t able to do it there. And the hitter did a nice job of turning that pitch around, not missing it in a hitter’s count. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Luis Ortiz out of the game. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Slade Sakone. And with a big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. And here is Michael Conorto. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Next offering is fouled back. Still only one out here in the inning. And ring him up, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strikeout. Here’s the catcher. Dalton rushing. Dalton rushing. There’s the strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Matt Festa getting ready to go. Allard warming up as well. And a big swing and a miss. And that one is downstairs now. One and two. Just off the outside part of the plate. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Now it’s three and two. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. battling here as he fouls it away and he grounds one to the right side and it finds its way through for a hit. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Well, he really had to battle for that one, man. That was so fun to watch. Fast ball down and in. Good spot to get a ground ball, but that one had eyes. Here’s a switch hitter, Tommy Edmund. That’s in for a strike. Two outs. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. Way back there and that one is out of here. A gigantic blast. It’s their second home run of the inning and they add to their lead. It’s 153 and their fifth home run of the game. Some things in this sport are contagious Boo and right now for this team clearly it’s the long ball. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Back to the top of the lineup now. It’s the DH Kik Hernandez. First pitch just misses. and another ball. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. That one misses. Three balls, no strikes. Mookie Betts up next for the Dodgers. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And that’s in for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. Two down. Nobody on. Swanging a ball driven out to center going back on this one to the warning track. Makes the catch. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. On to the bottom of inning number six. Major League Baseball is on the show. Carlos Santana digs in for the Guardians. one for two. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Next offering is in for a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. He’s dealing with a great two strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. That’s his ninth strikeout so far. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there. And that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, the ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. And a foul ball. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. One down. Base is empty. And that misses ball [Music] two. And strike two. Let’s go Cleveland. fouls it back with two strikes. And that one lifted in the air center field. Pah under it makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting the short stop. So up next, Gabrielle Arias and he takes a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Nope. That’s inside. Up and in. Now two balls in a strike. Slice down the right side. just missing there. And now three and two, popped in the air left field. Confordo settles under it, squeezes it, and that’ll do it. Here’s Muki now. One for four with a double. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays there. The first offering a fast ball for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Now batting first. That ball was absolutely ripped. 111 off the bat and I’m pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat. I think I heard that too, Boo. And these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at Statcast and just see exactly what the data is. Always so much fun to see what numbers pop up. First one to Freeman is in for a strike. Scorched to center. No doubt about it. That is long gone. He made him pay for that one. It’s 17-3. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Slade Sakonei will depart and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Now pitching new arm out of the bullpen. Colobby Allard. Well, he hasn’t pitched in a while. Coming on here after 5 days rest. So, he should be rested, but we’ll see if he has any rust to shake off. And up next for Los Angeles, Teascar Hernandez. [Applause] There’s a swing and a drive. Quan sprinting after it and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame here in the top half of inning number seven. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. And ball one on the ground right side. Takes it himself. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Here’s Max Muny. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. Just missed. That’s off the inside corner and now two and 0. Two count to a guy like this at the plate. You’ve got to throw a pitcher’s pitch. Don’t just try to get a strike. He could make you pay. Fast ball is outside. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Next pitch in for a strike and it’s a full count. [Applause] That one to first and a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. No swing. Gary Simmons with the call. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahes. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Pop foul out of play off to the right. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Not in time. Great effort, but it’s an infield hit. It’s good hustle. And when you’re talking about an emerging leader on a team, those are the things that are going to be necessary for him to do to set that example. You know, game in game out. Now it’s going to be Michael Conforto in there and it’s on one. just missed. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. And he’ll do it again. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another one out. Runners at first and second swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and there are two down. Dalton rushing now at the plate. Dalton rushing. First pitch misses in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away on the ground right side. Slings to first that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Two-run shot for the Dodgers this inning. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. You’re dialed into the show. Now pitching pitching change here. Alex Via. He’s been so good against lefties. Alex Via. So in now for Cleveland, Nolan Jones. [Music] That misses. And that’s ball one. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. That one missed inside. Just [Applause] missed. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Full count. Three and two swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Martinez batting with one down. takes the strike. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. That one pushed foul. Pitch misses there and the count one and two. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Coming out of the bullpen and throwing BB’s chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Quan in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Music] pulls that one foul. Two outs in the air. Center field. Pahes in position. And that is the third out of the inning. This one pretty well decided at this point. Eighth inning coming up. LA’s on top 17-3. Tommy Edmund getting ready to hit. Allard back to work. There’s a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Matt Festa, the young right-hander up and throwing. Off the mark there. And it’s one and one. cracks his bat and pops him up. Allard makes the play. One up, one down. Now batting designated hitter Kik Hernandez. Here’s Kik Hernandez. A Yeah, Boo. He’s on the brink of one of your favorite milestones. He’s completed three legs of the cycle. I love Niss cycle. in for a strike. Go and one. The Dodgers up big in this one. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. Oh, come on. On the warning track and holds it in. Man, Boo, I love watching an outfielder take on the wall to make that play. And it’s a lot easier to watch from up here because that can be painful in the end. You know the wall’s coming up on you quickly, so you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact. Betts stands in now and watches strike one. That one misses and it’s a ball and a strike. base knock center field and Freddy Freeman with a chance to make an impact with two away. Boo, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. So, two down. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit. Ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One hit, one left. Last half of the eighth coming up. Dodgers lead this one 17-3. And here’s the catcher, B Naylor. And Chris, his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played a good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus. But he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. And a swing and a miss there. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something that this guy does really well. gets in sync with his pitchers. Boog, his preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room, it’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Let’s go Cleveland swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Ramirez batting with one down. Takes a strike. Oh, that’s off the plate. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. That one way inside the Guardians with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That’s a little bit low. And that one in the air center field. Pes sizes this one up. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting. Two out. Space is empty. Kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One more time. Hammered down the right side, but foul. Two down. Nobody on. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two in the air right field. Hernandez brings it in for the third out. T Oscar Hernandez steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Hernandez. Swing and a ball hammered left field. Quan moving back and it’s off the out of town scoreboard. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second and he’s into third. Have a game. That’s his fourth hit. So, a man aboard. Here comes Max Mudsy. Fast ball is outside. Runner at third. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth. That one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Pulls into second. That’s an RBI double. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. And now the center fielder Andy Pahes. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Just missed. [Music] out of line out towards center. Martinez snags it on the run. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be if he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner. That’s the way it had to be done. Nice job, Michael Conforto the next to hit and first offering is fouled off. Cleveland [Applause] and a curb misses outside. cut on and lifted in the air. Makes the grab. Two down. Next up, the Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing. in the dirt. Muny on its second with two down. Hammers that one curling down the line and foul. Oh, that’s a really good pass to the ball right there. Just a little bit too quick. He’s got to find a way. Just let it travel a hair more. Man at second. You got two balls, one strike. And that’s off the inside edge. Now three and one. Let’s go. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Jones and makes the grab. And that is that. They get a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. Dodgers out in front 18-3. Carlos Santana digs in now. First baseman. Carlos Santana. First offering and it just misses. Next offering is fouled back. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still manages a throw and he’s going to make it to first. And we’ll see how they score it. Now batting second. Well, you can’t give him two errors on that play, but that’s pretty much what it looked like. Tried to stay with it after the bobble and it might have pulled it off with a good throw, but it’s very easy to rush the throw when you don’t field it cleanly. A lot of times guys don’t have a good grip on it and I think that was the case right there. Daniel Schneean digs in for the Guardians. Highf fly ball out towards left field. Conforing back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting the shortstop, Gabrielle Arias. And up next for Cleveland, Gabrielle Arias. Right through there for a strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well that one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. The one two with a short stop. Takes a ball. 2-2 now. Outside with a breaking ball and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Nolan Jones now at the plate. Jones. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one [Music] on the inside corner for a strike. I got one ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. The Guardians down to their final strike. That one just missing inside. Two and two. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Two outs and a popup right side foul territory. He’ll squeeze it for the final out. And the Dodgers slug their way to a win in this one. Offensive explosion today for these players. They gave up a few runs, but they had more than enough firepower to turn this one into a blowout. So, this one got a little out of hand. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shambi saying so long.
