#DallasCowboys Fish AM Live: Come inside #Cowboys OTAs Here At The Star!

Cookouts, slapshots, free throws, pingpong, water burger. I’m not saying I’m tired of the talk. I am saying I want to see something more and I hope we do today as we go inside OTAAS. I’m Mike Fischer, your trusty and trusted reporter. This is the fishbowl. That is the star and we’ll be inside that building shortly. uh Brian Shottenheimr, the new coach of the Cubs. We’ll talk to him. Then we’ll go out and watch practice. And I’m going to give you my five things to look for at practice. Five things that I’m looking for. And many of these obviously are guided by your requests. Okay. Your demands. 75,000 fish heads in Cowboy Nation. Can’t be wrong. Do I watch film? No, but I wear the t-shirt from the Uncle Fish store below. Do I watch practice? That I do. And I have watched practice in the NFL for 40 years, 35 years on the Cowboys. So, you would think I would have learned something over the course of this time. We shall find out today. Uh, get in, get on, be good. Bring something of sports intellect to the table. Straight dope, no bullsh. Here’s my five things that I’m looking for today. Item one, cookouts are fun. Ping pong is grand. Waterburg is delicious. free throw contests and slapshot contests and all the stuff that Shotti is doing. Nothing new under the sun. All the stuff that new head coach Brian Shottenheimimer is doing just to try to get the guys to know the guys, get the guys to know each other and get the coaching staff to know everybody, too. It’s It’s admirable. It’s the right way for this guy to do it. It’s it’s it’s his way. It’s it’s his right way. I don’t argue against any of it. I do say this and I think I speak for you on this. There’s going to come a point where you’re a little tired of hearing about it. Not Not that the details aren’t fascinating. Who won the free throw contest? Well, best two out of three. George Pickins beat Shotty. That’s good. That’s fun. But pending seeing it in action in a game, I want to see it. I I want to This is about body language. This about communication when nobody’s looking. Uh culture is this big gigantic thing. We’ll see. I’m talking about Dak Prescott pulling George Pickkins aside and saying, “Hey, here’s the way we like to do it.” And then seeing George Pickkins do it. Cookouts are fun. Ping pong’s grand. What a burger’s delicious. I want to feel it today at practice. Item two, hard knocks. I’m going to bring this up with somebody. As you may know, I hate it. Uh, it’s abomination because it’s not football. It’s fake. It’ll turn coaches, players, scouts, and most of all, owners into actors, and that’s not good. Um, this is this is down the line. This is going to be regular season, but I’m going to poke around on that subject today. I want to see if the Cowboys recognize that that it’s something they have to fight off versus the Cowboys going or a particular Cowboy going, “This is my chance to be a star.” Item three, we’ve talked a lot about Joe Milton. He can take a banana and throw it 90 yards. He can take an orange and throw it 95. He’s big. He’s strong. He can run. He’s a delightful young man. Although somebody in New England thinks he’s a bad dude. I don’t know. We haven’t seen any evidence of that. The Cowboys don’t have any evidence of that. And they did their research into Joe Milton. He’s getting uh criticized a little bit for his work last week that we got to see because there were two interceptions. I I watched the whole thing. I didn’t think there was anything particularly horrible or wild about anything. He had some overthrows, too. Let’s see if he’s another week has made him more comfortable in what they do here. And and let’s do keep an eye on Joe Milton while at the same time understanding this isn’t about the third string quarterback. This is about the first string quarterback and most of all that’s probably who we’ll be watching. Uh as we anticipate that Dak Prescott will do all the things with the first team. Item three. And yeah, I if I’m talking fast, first of all, because that’s the way I am. And second of all, we got to get going here. And I do read those and I do reflect on those and sometimes I even work up the nerve to answer them. Item four, Bland Don Bland would prefer to be a boundary corner as opposed to slot corner. Tommy Buster with a $2 pitch in. Rock out with your socks out. And I I I’ll have my socks on and I’ll be wearing sleeves today at Cowboys practice inside the Star. So Bland in the slot was a gigantic win. And if the Cowboys quarterback room was good enough, it could be a gigantic win again, but it’s not. So, I I would I’d like to see Bland in the slot just as an option. I’d like to see it today. But do the math on the quarterbacks. Fine. I’ll put Elum, the former first round Bills guy over there. Traded for him. Cheap trade. Good move because there’s no downside to it. Doesn’t cost you money. didn’t cost you anything valuable in a pick. So, Elim’s over there. Who’s the other boundary corner if it’s not bland? You ready to play seat belt over there? I’m not. Uh, who else? I I don’t want to play Izzy as a boundary corner. So, I’ve got Izzy in the slot and I’ve got Bland and Elim as the starting outside quarterbacks, and I don’t I don’t see how until the rookie Revel is ready. I don’t see how that changes. Um, a bunch of you are talking about offensive line and absolutely it’s um we we we want to keep watching Gayton. I I think I think he’s changing his body. I think he is. And then the the ability of Booker to look dominant. Now remember these are this is the underwear Olympics as Michael Urban and Michael Fischer coined the phrase uh in 1990. Seriously, we invented it and then Sports Illustrated stole it from us. So the problem with offensive line is it’s nobody’s hitting anybody. We’ll watch. It’s harder to judge. Um what we can judge is where people line up. Um, who’s who’s the second left tackle? Because that’s the guy I think it might be Austin Richards. That’s the guy that has a chance to challenge Gayton should he stumble a bit. Uh, and then finally, item five, Micah obviously is going to be a big story. Is he here? Is he there? Where is he? Uh, it doesn’t mean it’s a crisis one way or the other, and it doesn’t mean it’s a celebration one way or the other. Um, as we’ve discussed many times, Micah habitually, uh, I I’m going to go across the street and do karate. I’m going to go to China and do sumu wrestling. Hey, I’m going to work out with boxing while you got and Shotti has he used the word begged the other day, a little strong, but Shotti has begged Micah to be here. and Jerry has almost ordered him, even though it’s voluntary to be here by suggesting if you’re going to be the team leader and make $40 million a year, probably need to show up and lead guys. So, we won’t turn this into some disaster if Micah is not available at work today, especially did he work yesterday? Does he work Friday? But it’s a story. And then Micah slash the other defensive end. Great deal of excitement over easy as we’ve taken a call on him. We got rid of the e easy the rookie defensive end and rave reviews on him from before the draft during the draft before the draft from the national guys during the draft national guys and now Cowboys are very pleased. How’s he beat out Dante Fowler? Why Dante Fowler who who was like Dan Quinn was like his family going back to University of Florida when Quinn was the defensive line coach and Fowler played there. True story. Fowler went had Thanksgivings with the Quinn family. That’s how close they are. Why? And then he has 10 and a half sacks last year in Washington. Why didn’t they sign him? I I guess I I need to poke around on that as well, but I’m interested in who ends up starting the season getting snaps at defensive end. Not in preseason. I don’t need to see Dante Fowler in preseason, but Dante Fowler, if you give him snaps, he gives you sacks. So, we’ll be watching for the other defensive end as well.
