🔴LIVE 🔴New York Yankees VS Los Angeles Dodgers/Mlb May 30/MLB THE SHOW 25
just about ready to go. Pitching at our game today, Clayton Kershaw. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game, and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Kershaw fires. That one misses. And now it’s even one and one. Down to the dirt. Swing and a miss. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. You could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball and there’s a ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Not close with that one. And now it’s three and two. And that one is lifted in the air. Pahes sizes this one up. Hauls it in for the owl. As we take a look now at the New York Yankees lineup, an offense that knows how to mash, Chris. Lots of power throughout the lineup. They’re leading the league in homers right now. Yeah. And I think when you’re facing a team like this, pitchers coming in, they see the stats, they end up trying to nibble, trying to work on the edges, trying to expand the zone. And so I think the key if these hitters can stay within themselves, obviously they have the ability to hit the ball a long way and score runs quickly. So we’ll see how it goes in this one. Trent Gisham in the box now. No balls in a strike. It affects the game in so many ways, right? Your ability to come back is usually tied to power. If you can deliver a huge hit with one swing of the bat, it really changes your capability when you fall behind. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. Two gone now. Batting third. Here comes Aaron Judge. Big time power. rip towards third and that will end the inning. One, two, three, go the Yankees. The Dodgers coming up and we are scoreless back after this on the show. Back here in LA and today’s starter, Clark Schmidt. What do we have on him? Well, Boo may be a little pedestrian there in terms of the ERA, but with those numbers, you expect to be in a ball game and have an opportunity to win. And really, that’s all his teammates can ask for. So, we’ll see if he’s able to be consistent in this one. Bottom of the first, Maxy at the dish. One home run shy of 200 for his career. That misses the zone. And that is ball one. Muny with just one more homer to reach the 200 career mark. You know, we usually talk about bigger numbers when it comes to homers, but only about 400 major leaguers have ever hit 200 round trippers in their careers. He’s putting himself in great company. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. on the ground to first. Goldie takes it himself. One up, one down. Here’s the Dodgers lineup. Now, they do a lot of things well in this offense, Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right. Oh, now this one’s high and deep way back there on its way. Gone. He sends one out the opposite way. His ninth homer of the year. And they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s an incredible job of letting that breaking ball get deep, trusting your hands, and driving it out the other way. That’s how you practice it in the cage. Incredible when you can translate it into the ball game. Base is empty, one away. And now Tay Oscar Hernandez and that is out of play. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. And it’s even up. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Just missed. Strike two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit. That misses. And that’s ball one. ripped on the ground at second. Lameu gets it to first and Freeman is retired. And that is that one scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s an early one- nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bellinger up to hit. He’s got an MVP and a rookie of the year under his belt and a guy who’s played every day as a first baseman, every day as a right fielder, every day as a center fielder. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Betts whips it to first and a quick out number one. Oh, mood. Talk about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Now here is Anthony Vulpi and a curve drops in for a strike. Kershaw a tall lefty. He features a slider, a fourseamer, a curb, and occasionally works in a splitter and a foul ball. One down, base is empty. The shorts stop takes the ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. Swing at a highf fly ball. That’s out to center. Rojos calls it in. Two away. Jason Dominguez stepping in now for the Yankees. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. His seventh home run of the season. It’s 1-1. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Here’s DJ Lameu. And a big swing and a miss. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game and ball one to Lameu. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. fights that one away. Still one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Goes down swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. Call even now at 1-1. Bottom half of inning number two. Now here is Will Smith taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Liner base hit. So a man on base to start the inning. just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Andy Pahes. Andy. And that one clips the corner. fast ball for a strike and it’s nothing and two. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. He goes down looking. Are you kidding me? No, that was a pretty poor at bat. He just never got the bat off of his shoulder. I mean, you got to go up there looking to swing at some point, especially once you’re down 02. And at that point, make an adjustment. Look to put the ball in play if it’s anywhere close. And I’m just not sure what the plan was there. Tommy Edmond at the plate. This one in the dirt. Let’s keep it going. The one foul ball there. Smith leads off first with one away. Let’s go. Go back to York. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Oh, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Back-to-back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Kik Hernandez in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. All right, foul ball still 0 and two. Los Angeles. Here comes the pitch fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. One hit, one left. We head on down to the top of the third. All tied 1-1. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. And now JC Escara. Kershaw back to work. Just off the outside edge. Ball one. And that’s fouled off. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball two. And that drops in for a strike. And that’s way high. And the count’s full. flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. The batter now, Oswald PZA and a strike in there. Tied up here in the early going. That one fouled off. swings and misses. Struck him out. Man, it’s so difficult as a hitter to get on plane with that pitch. It’s breaking down and in. And you’ve got to find a way to match the plane. And if it’s nasty like that one, bite at the end, most times you’re swinging over the top and walking back to the dugout. Goldie the next to hit takes ball one. Runner takes off up the middle. Tags the runner on to Freeman. Double play. Inning over. Home half of the third coming up. Tied at one. Back here at Chavez Ravine as we go to the last of the third. Miguel Rojos at the plate. Roas just off the inside edge. in for a strike. Went with the sweeper. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. On the ground to first. Goldie takes it to the bag. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Batting hitter Max. So the batting order turns over. Maxy steps to the plate for the Dodgers. His next home run will be the 200th in his career. It would be pretty cool to see it right here. That one finds the zone. One and one. One down. Base is empty. And that one is downstairs. And the count even one and one. There’s the strike. and a swing and a miss. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Here’s Muki Betts. Now he’s already homerred here in this one. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. And that one wrapped foul. And he grounds one to the right side into the outfield. Base hit. And with the inning still alive, here comes the heart of the order. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. So, two down. Here’s Tasks Hernandez. First pitch misses. And because of that big power arm is able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Check swing and he went and the count one and one swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the last half of the third. Next pitch misses. Three and two now. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Swinging a ground ball and it’s through for a hit. And now first and second with two outs. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. First and second, two outs. Now it’s the Dodger cleanup hitter Freddy Freeman 0 for one so far. Pitch misses. Ball one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. In for a strike. And now just one pitch away from surviving the inning. Betts over at second. Hernandez on it first with two down. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Two outs. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Dodgers strand a couple. Score remains deadlocked at one back here at Dodger Stadium. So, the batter now will be Trent Gisham. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. Swing and a miss. Strike one. You know, these Yankees just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Got him swinging. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Now it’s Aaron Judge up to the plate. Grounded out his first time up. And that’s in the dirt. Judge working on a massive campaign right now. Putting up some big home run numbers. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Judge rips that one. That’s bat. Unbelievable. Pulls it in on the warning track. And up to the plate comes Cody Bellinger. He’s 0 for one. Just missed. Two out. Space is empty. And another ball. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. just missed. This one ripped but fouled to the right. And there’s ball four. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Step off, throw to first. Bellinger dives back. fouled off down the right side. Get out of here. Two outs. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. One left for the Yankees. Score remains tied 1-1. Back here in LA, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And up to the plate is Will Smith. That clips a corner. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Outside and it’s one and one. You know, these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is start and a superb diving catch. Up next for the Dodgers, leftielder. And wow, what a great diving catch. Singi Stackcast says that was a near perfect route and it had to be and that’s just a big part of his game. I mean this guy’s instincts just seem to always put him in a position to make special plays and right there he’s done it again. And next for LA Andy Pahes check swing called strike and that’s strike one. You know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today. One down, base is empty. Ground ball. Goldie steps on first for the out. Now batting center fielder Tommy Edmond. Here’s a switch hitter. Tommy Edmond went down on strikes his first time through. splits the plate. Strike one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like Oh, now this is drilled to center. Way back there on its way and gone. He flexes his power with that swing and they jump out front. It’s 2-1. That one just sounded different. Yeah, it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. There was a cutter away. Kind of works like a slider. You’ve got to stay on it, let it travel a little bit, and then get your arms extended. Really good piece of hitting right there. Here’s Kik Hernandez. He was a strikeout victim his first time. There’s the strike. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one in the air, center field. Gisham should have this one. And he makes the catch. And that is that solo shot for the Dodgers this inning. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark now. The left fielder Jason Dominguez. These two offenses can put up runs in a hurry. You know, these Yankees, they’re not going to be happy with the at bats they’ve been having so far. With just one hit in the game, they’re clearly frustrated and searching for answers at this point. Thing about frustration, though, it gets you nowhere as a hitter. It’s easy to get there, but the best thing you can do is simplify the approach and take things one pitch at a time. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, that high forcing fast ball, it’s become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years. And what’s so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well. The problem is the velocity at spin rate just happens to jump by you. You expand your zone. You don’t stay tall on the backside and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do, many times it’s a popup. Lame Hugh stands in now and watches strike one. The Dodgers up by a run and we’re at the top of the fifth. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. Good eye in that spot. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. on the ground. Throw on to Freeman and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. Now batting number 25. And here is JC Escara. He reached out to walk his first time. Pascara in his rookie season 29 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Two down to nobody on comebacker to the mound in plenty of time to first and the Yanks go quietly. So the Yanks go in order. They’re down two to one. And we’re back now at the plate. Miguel Rohos. Second baseman. Miguel Roas. And that’s way high. And it’s one and0. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Back to the top of the lineup. Max Muny steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Bowl for two in this one. Swing and a miss. And that is strike one. whacked out to center field. That’s well struck way back there. That’s not coming back. His second home run of the series and they boost their lead. It’s 3-1. Singi, somebody go track down that baseball. It’s number 200 for him. 200 career home runs. That’s legitimate power at the plate. And that’s something that a lot of guys would dream of getting to. That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. So, one out, nobody on. And up next for Los Angeles, Mookie Betts. And that’s outside. And Muki takes Schmid. Maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. And I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up. But sometimes they need a little pickme up. And he handles it himself for the out. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Two outs. Base is empty. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Teascar Hernandez, one for two. And that is downstairs. And now 2 and 0. after giving up that home run earlier. Just doesn’t seem like he wants to challenge him. That one missed. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Last half of inning number five. Lifted in the air, right field, Bellinger. And that is that. That funky Muny with a homer for LA. And this is now a 31 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Chavez Ravine. New inning getting started. And stepping in for the Yankees. Oswald PZA. Kershaw back to work. That is upstairs for ball one. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Hernandez calls it in for the out. One down. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Goldie in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate. And there’s the strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fly ball down the line. Hernandez on the move. Couldn’t get to it before it dropped. Foul. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Close but called a ball. Three and two now. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Gets a piece and stays alive. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. That one back up the middle and it gets through. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. Just a great at bat right there. Saw a lot of pitches. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Now here’s Trent Gisham who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. A little bit high maybe. And that is ball one. Goldie at first. One gone. Next offering is in for a strike. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap, but you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Started to go after it now. Will look down to third and he went around. Rule the swing. Got him. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. It’s Aaron Judge now. He’s got the power but great contact skills. One of the best contact hitters in the game. A sliding stop, the throw, and very nicely done for the out. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors, and one left. To the bottom of the six we go, 456. Coming up, it’s the Dodgers three and the Yankees won. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Yerry de los Santos. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And here’s Freddy Freeman. Freeman. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter. When you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. That one not close at a count one and two. That’s down and in. liner snagged at first. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. Will Smith to the plate and remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Misses outside. Now 2 and 0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. And downstairs, activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Devin Williams, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Yarro also throwing and he walked him on four pitches. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. One down. Andy Pahz steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Runner on the move and there’s a foul ball. Man at first, one away. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. That’s to third and it stays fair. Throw into third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s safe. Batting center. Runners at the corners here. One away. Next to hit, Tommy Edmond. He’s already homered in this game. out in front with the swing and that is strike one. Rudders are at the corners. One away. One more. Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back outside low and it’s one and two. Ground ball left side could be two. There’s one. And that’s two. So one hit is all they get. We’re through six full. It’s the Dodgers three and the Yankees one. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Alex Via. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Here’s Cody Bellinger. He’s 0 for one. Cody Bellinger. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Dodgers bullpen with some action. Anthony Ba getting loose out there. And the one got it started a little too early. Strike one. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Just missed. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. Ripped but a curls foul. The Yankees looking to rally. rips one to right and that’s just foul swings through that one. It’s a strike out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. There’s the strike. but a short stop. Takes a ball. Going to count one and two. sets him down looking. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. Well, this is exactly what you’re looking for from your bullpin arm when you roll them out there to start a new inning, hold on to a small lead. Just such a stabilizing effect to not only get the first two hitters, but to strike them out. That gives everyone on defense a big boost of confidence. Dominguez in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. LA. Got him swinging for the strike out. And he strikes out the side in the seventh. Down in order, go to Yankees. Score holds. It’s 3-1. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Devin Williams. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And Kik Hernandez at the plate. Third base Hernandez. Come on. And that drops in for a strike. You know, these Dodgers really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. The numbers help tell the story. I mean, they’ve been sitting fast ball and it’s paying off in a big way so far with six hits against that pitch alone. Let’s go. Next offering upstairs. And that’s a great way for a lineup to dominate a game because if a pitcher can’t rely on his fast ball to get outs, I mean, that puts a lot of pressure on the rest of his pitches to be effective. And he swings through that one. Two and two. swinging a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Way out in front of that inside pitch there. And just exactly the opposite kind of approach that you want with two strikes. You want to let the ball travel. Make sure you recognize it. Try to shorten up so that you can at least put the ball in play. Clearly fooled, but I think even more so you question the two strike approach. Rojos up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s two and 0. That clips the corner. The next pitch misses and that’s ball three and a foul ball. outside and that is ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that wall. Back to the top of the order. Next is the designated hitter, Maxy. First pitch misses. Rojos stands at first with one out. Dodgers. Swings through that. One ball, one strike. swing and a miss and the runner stays where he is. Batting short stops Mookie Betts will make his way to the plate. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boogie didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. One more. Let’s go. Two outs. Just missed. in the dirt. Hey, you got this. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, it’s no runs, no base hits, no errors, and a runner left. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Dodgers three, and the Yankees won. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth, Luis Garcia. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Number 57, Luis Garcia. And now it’s DJ Lameu digging in. Second base, DJ Lameu. First pitch just misses. Garcia measures 6’2 in, 240 pounds, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. All right, next offering is in for a strike. Dodgers. The pitch to Lameu hit hard on the ground to the right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. The throw won’t get there in time. He’s in safely. And now there’s a runner at first. Well, with his speed, he doesn’t get a whole lot of those infield hits, but he was giving it everything he had right there. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. And here’s the catcher JCA. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and one. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Tying run at the plate and fouled off. That one misses now. One and two. way to lay off that pitch down. And now two and two. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. The tying run at the plate. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Oswald PZA will hit next. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Liner and this could be trouble. Lameu on his way to third. Coming home. The relay to the plate. The tag and he’s out. That really hurts right there. This is no time to gamble. When you’re down in the ball game, you got to be sure if you’re going to advance a runner or even try to score right there that you’re going to be safe. Just a poor decision. Here is Goldmith, known for his late inning heroics. Turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. Oh man, that stays fair. We got a new ball game. Great swing. Just couldn’t keep it between the lines. He’s got to try to bottle that. Do it again. Next pitch is outside with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Inside. And that’s ball two. to third and it goes just foul. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That one is absolutely belted. Edmonds sprinting for this one. High bounce. Takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double as a run scores on the play. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And the Dodgers will go to the bullpen. Luis Garcia will depart and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on them yet. We’ll be right back. So, they bring on their closer in the eighth, Tanner Scott. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at second. Coming in as a pinch runner, Pablo Reyes. Pablo Reyes. So, runner at second, two down. Trent Gisham stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for three in this one. First pitch, not close. Oh, they’re applying pressure. Quality at bats, quality swings right now. And see this offense doing it. One player to the next. Showing a lot of fight right now. and they’re making it difficult for the back end of this bullpen to close out this game. So the tying run at second swings and misses and the count is one and two. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Mark Lighter Jr. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. 345 do up for the home team. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Tay Oscar Hernandez, one for three. Check swing called strike. Movement in the Yankees pen. Tim Hill the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Yarro getting loose as well. Let’s go and ball one and one and two. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. and the leadoff man aboard. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Freeman. Here is Freddy Freeman. Now, here we go. That one outside. One and0. Hernandez gets his lead at first with nobody out. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes, there’s a ball. Throw to second. He’s safe. Well, it seems like 90 ft is such a big deal in a tight one-run game like this one. Maybe it’s a little bit risky, but they felt good about it and it paid off. Let’s see if they can turn this into a big run. Runner at second. Nobody out. And they’re swinging a miss. Hit on the ground to short. Vulpi throws it to first in time and Freeman is retired. Will Smith. The batter now will be Will Smith. First round pick out of Louisville in 2016. That one finds the zone. Strike one. I feel with the way that Will Smith is able to handle the bat, control the bat head, he’s very capable of finding green space and driving in that run. Check swing called strike. That is strike two. Runner at second here. One gone. That’s off the mark. It’s a ball in two strikes. All right, Todd. Ground ball up the middle. Nice grab from his knees. The throw to first and he beats it. Wow. He did everything he could on that play with the throw from his knee, but the hustle down the line was enough to earn him the infield knock. And that’s a great baseball play all the way around. And now Andy Pahus. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Swings through that one out in front that time in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Brothers at the corners. One away near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Now this is in the air down the line. Bellinger sizing it up. Makes the grab and that should get the job done as he tags from third. That’s a sacrifice fly as he comes across and they lead by two. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. And here comes Tommy Edmond. And that one missing low. Get another one. on the ground right side. Reyes tosses to the pitcher covering the bag and they get Edmond for the out and that ends the inning. They get a run on two hits, no errors and a man left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Dodgers four and the Yankees two. Back here in LA leading off Aaron Judge. Aaron Judge. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never had a chance. Next pitch is downstairs. Hard hit left side. Whips it to first. Judge out on the play. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. One down. Here comes Cody Bellinger. There’s the strike. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. Next offering is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Rojas, tosses to first. Two up, two down. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. So, last chance for the Yankees. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. And a base hit up the middle. Now batting leftielder digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jason Dominguez. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Vulpi off of first with two away. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Scott is just one strike away. That one inside now one and two. That turns out to be a really good take right there, but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Tying run at the plate. That one almost got him. Hit to right and that should do it. That’s the ball game. Start of a new month is a great chance to hit the reset button. Whether you’re coming in hot or cold, getting that win today is a great feeling to continue through the rest of the month. And your final 42. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
