just about set to go. And our pitcher tonight, Shi Otani, well, he comes at hitters with a five pitch mix. So for him, it’s always interesting to see how he utilizes those weapons. He may lean on one or two pitches depending on how things are going and how things are working. But if he can control four or even five of those offerings, look out hitters. It’s going to be a tough day. He’s really going to be able to keep those guys off balance. Now it’s the second baseman, Glabber Torres. And a pitch that catches the zone for a strike. And we are underway. Here comes the one. That one fouled off. going to now swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so in an 02 count you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your sway. Juan Sodto now in the box, comes up empty with a swing there. Otani, 29 years old, and he’s one of the few twotime MVPs in the league. And it’s fouled away. One out. Base is empty. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths, and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter, any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie. And instead of it being a well plays made there and that retires the side and the Dodgers are coming up to hit no score. Major League Baseball is on the show. And we’re back. Our starting pitcher in this one, Garrick Cole. And Singi, he’s a workhorse. loves pitching deep into his starts. Try to stay back for that power change up. Speed differential between the fast ball and the change up is huge. Hitters, they have a hard time staying back. Bottom of the first. Now it’s the short stop. Tommy Edmond. He has consistently been one of the best in the sport against lefties. And yet the righties give him trouble. You know, you don’t want to be labeled as that guy, but the numbers say what they say. Oh, he’s a good player, but if he wants to be great, he’s going to have to figure it out against right-handed pitchers. There’s so many right-handers in the game that you’re going to see them one after another. So, you would imagine with that many looks, Boog, that the adjustments’s got to be coming soon. Kicks and fires. The punch out there. One gone. Bottom half of the first and now it’s Bookie Betts. First pitch misses. One down. Base is empty. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Betts is definitely one of those guys that excels at everything he does. Boo, in terms of baseball, he can do it all. He’s won World Series, batting titles, gold gloves, and everything else you can think of. Just missed. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike, if he swings or not. Here comes the pitch. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. The other way. Puts it away for the out. Time to check out the Dodgers lineup. And the key to victory for them here, get their starter some run support early. Ug. If they can get him that run support early, it’s likely the other team folds because they know how dominant he can be once he gets settled in. So, put pressure on that other team right away. Jump out to a lead early and a few runs is going to feel like 30. Freddy Freeman in now takes ball one off the plate. just missed. And that one cutting but missing down low. Teascar Hernandez waiting for a turn at the plate. The pitch. fast ball for a strike. And there’s ball four. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Tayscar Hernandez in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Yoan swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play. Freeman leads off first with two down to the inning. Got him swinging for the strikeout. Some high cheese for strike three. One left for LA. We played an inning. No score. Second inning set to go. Anthony Rizzo steps to the plate. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. And ball one, I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. Now he breaks his back, makes the catch for the Now here’s John Carlos Stanton and a swing and a miss. Otani, a former MVP. He throws a slerve, a fourseamer, a cutter, a splitter, and he works in a sinker. Second inning here, no score. Next offering is downstairs. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent as you mentioned and maybe a little generous on the edges. One down, base is empty. Pitch misses there and it’s two and one. comes up empty. That’s strike two. Oh, that’s that slurf right there. He threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. Got him. Two up, two down in the top of the second. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the third baseman, Jazz Chisum Jr. That one catches the zone. Strike one. Next offering is fouled back. 0 and2 now. gets a piece and stays alive. The pitch, this one popped up. Lux gets under it. He’s got it. And that is out number three. So the Yanks go in order. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. Here come the Dodgers. No score. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Maxy. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. The pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. and a pitch. That’s off the mark. Now one and two. There’s a swing and a drive. And it’s off the foul pole for a home run. A monster shot to right and they jump out front. It’s one- nothing off the bat. It looked like it had plenty of distance, but there was just no telling if it was going to stay fair. I mean, he really hooked that thing down the right field line, but good thing that big pole was there to let us know. Could have very easily just been a long strike if he hit it out front any more than he did. Will Smith in the box now. No balls in a strike. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Out to short. Vulpi over to first and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that. And next for LA Andy Pahes. Well, we’re expecting to see strikeouts in this one. And Cole is in the 2,000 strikeout club and only needed around 1,700 innings to get there. You know, only Chris Sail and Pedro Martinez needed fewer innings to reach 2,000 strikeouts. One-1 late with the swing there. I think he was sitting off speed there. One out, base is empty and a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. And that just misses. Looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone, but doesn’t seem to be too upset. That’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling. That’s just a part of pitching and down on strikes. Two down. Here’s Kik Hernandez. That one inside. One and0. Two down. Dolman foul back our way. And that’s out of play. And now it’s even up and delivers outside. Really good take especially with two strikes on its way to the corner and no one could get to it. It’s a foul ball. Got him looking. That’s the third out. Inning over. So, the Dodgers strike first on the Solo Jack. It’s an early one- nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. And the batter now, Anthony Vulpi. Otani back to work. bunch attempt, but that goes foul at the belt and fires. The shorts stop takes a ball. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Ry to the plate. And that’s outside. swings and misses. And the count is two and two. Righty delivers. Wouldn’t chase that time. hit hard. That gets through. So, runner aboard to start the inning. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it, and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. Tried to check his swing. Appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there. And another ball. Right-hander kicks, steals, that one misses, and that’s ball three. Alex Verdugo waiting to hit for the Yankees. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. In there at the knees. Three and one. I mean, that’s perfect location right on the black. I mean, over and over again, this guy demonstrates the ability to hit those spots. They’re so tough to do anything with as a hitter. Otani over to first. Vulpi back in standing. The 3-1 swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and boow to it. Here’s Alex Verdugo. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Ruer takes off. Strike in there. Low throw and he can’t take it out. Safe at second. And that was not close. When your catcher is not a great thrower, you have to do a better job at controlling the running game. And that’s throwing over. That’s stepping off. Doing whatever you can to try to keep that base Steelers rhythm off. Well, they weren’t able to do it right there. They’re going to have to make some type of adjustment. Our players are going to be running all game. Left-hand hitter waits, ripped on a line. Playable Betts, makes the grab and there’s one away. Back to the top of the Yankee order now. Here is Glabber Torres. Struck out on just three pitches last time. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. Gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. So, two down. Woo. Now he was a strikeout victim his first time. Founding ball here. Rolls foul. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. There’s the strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. That’s down and in. Well, he missed badly with that 02 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Two outs and he swings and lifts one to deep center field up against the wall and brings it in. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. All even at one a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Chavez Ravine, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now it’s Gavin Lux. The wind to the pitch. There’s the strike. fast ball for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Next one misses and that’s ball one. And the right-hander deals that one in the dirt and it’s two and two. Swang on belted that one carry. See you later. A gigantic blast. It’s 2-1. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. That was quite the home run, Siggy, as we take it in again with Stackcast. 114 mph off the bat. Yeah. And plenty of distance, too. I mean, with that kind of exit, Vo, if you can get it up in the air with good backspin, it’s going to be a tape measure shot. So the batting order turns over and now the short stop Tommy Edmond off the mark there. Ball one. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. The one fought off foul. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. There’s a one-1. Swinging a foul over the screen. And back out of play. The pitch just missed. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. here in the last half of the third and that one is lifted in the air. Verdugo sizing this one up. Pauls it in for the out. Now it’s Mookie Ben. He’s 0 for one. Singi’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that foul off left side. Clearly, he was geared up for the fast ball right there. Maybe got a little jumpy and excited out of the hand, but he certainly didn’t miss a stitch. Goes down looking. Well, he froze him with the change up right there. And I think he was so geared up for fast ball once he recognized that it was off speed, he just wasn’t able to make an adjustment. So a really good strike out and pitcher just won the battle. Freeman in the box here lets that one go for a ball. One and0 to Freddy Freeman. Foul back our way. And that’s out of play. Two outs. Base is empty. Left hand batters, bows it off. Still one and two. Two down to spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another that one missing inside. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. The two- two on the way and a good eye there. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Back here in LA, start of the fourth. Here comes Aaron Judge. He’s a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today’s game. This guy hits for contact, so he delivers average, but there’s on base and slugging, too. First pitch doesn’t find the zone early in the count. You have to be real careful because of that power. But then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him, he’s still very comfortable. And because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball, he’s a threat deep into the count as well. And a pitchy deals. Next pitch in for a strike. And the count is even. Two and two. And another ball. Ground ball. Freddy Freeman and he handles it himself for the out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And here is Anthony Rizzo. First time up was a pop out. Rizzo, a former gold glove winner, 34 year old vet, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2007. There’s the strike. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. That’s in there. And that is strike two. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Made quick work of him right there, Sigi. I know that’s the kind of at bat maybe leaves a lot of fans wondering what was he doing up there, right? Yeah, and I get that. I mean, you take two straight strikes, then chase one way out of the zone. It’s It’s just not a good at bat. It’ll leave you shaking your head as a hitter, if not worse. But there’s always going to be those trips to the plate where you’re just lost up there, and that was one of them for sure. And now it’s John Carlos Stanton swinging a foul back that’s out of play kick and deals. Good eye in that spot. Foul ball, two outs, and down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Yanks held in check and they trail it here two to one. ready to go. Bottom four now. The left fielder Teay Oscar Hernandez Hernandez Cole back to work and that’s in for a strike. You know, these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. And that’s off the inside edge. One and two to count. That one missed. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Base knock right field. So, a man on base to start the inning. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s Max Muny. That funky Muny. He’s already homerred in this game. That misses. And that is ball one. And the righty deals. Now one and that one hammered Soda raging back towards the wall and caught on the warning track. maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. The batter now will be Will Smith. Grounded out his first time. Inside just missed. Hernandez stands at first with one out. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Swinging a foul straight back. And a one, two. And that one is inside, kicks, and fires. This to third. Chisum to second. And that’s two. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Dodgers two and the Yankees one. And we’re back all set for the start of the unit. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jazz Chisum Jr. Oh, Boo. A lot has changed for this kid from the Bahamas. Jazz was signed by the Diamondbacks as a free agent for $200,000. Four years later, he’s traded to Miami and played for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp before getting his call to the big leagues. He’s a player on the rise. You know, these Yankees, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times, and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. So up next, Anthony Vulpi one for one with a single and a run scored so far. Checks over to first, back safely. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. And that one fouled off. And a pitch out, but nothing going on. Nobody out. Runner at first. Next pitch is outside. at the belt and fires inside. Almost got him. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. And a pitch down the middle for a strike. And it’s three and two. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. Righty to the plate. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Now, big strikeout right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. First pitch just misses. The Yankees down by a run and we’re in the top of the fifth. That one in there across the letters. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Next offering upstairs. And here it comes. Strike two. The pitch spoils that one and it remains two and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Righty delivers and that one is in the dirt. Three and two now. Alex Verdugo to bat next. Man at first. One away. That one down the line and that’s just fouled. Here comes the pitch. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. And that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. One down. Alex Verdugo stepping in now for the Yankees. First offering and it just misses. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. One out, runners at first and second. Swearing a foul over the screen and back out of play. The pitch that’s off the mark and the count two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. That one finds the zone. It’s two and two. Got him. And now two gone. Back to the top of the lineup. Blabber Torres up to hit. RBI knock for him last time. And now a chance to drive in another run. Pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one. Called strike right there. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. And just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swing and a miss. And that is that Yanks strand a pair. They’re down two to one. back here at Dodger Stadium. And now the DH Andy Pesy the pitch. Foul ball there. But why the kick, the pitch out towards right center. That’s well struck. a dive and he can’t haul it in. PZ on his way to third and he’s got a leadoff triple. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. Here’s Kik Hernandez. There’s the strike of the knees. And a pitch. And there’s a foul ball. Runner at third, nobody out. Last half of inning number five. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. Picks up strikeout number seven. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And stepping in is the speedy Gavin Lux. He’s already homered here in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One away with a runner at third. That’s a base hit. Run. Scores. Comes through with the RBI. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Back to the top of the Dodgers order. Tommy Edmond at the plate. Cole a check to first. That’s in there. Strike one. Fouled off. if he was late. Lux leads off first with one away. That’s a little bit low. The shorts stop takes a ball. The pitch swings and misses. It’s a strikeout. Pulled the string on the change up. Here’s Mookie Betts. Now, Chris baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. And there’s a ball. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Yeah, the right-hander deals. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. And he walked him. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Verdugo gets under it and makes the play and that’s out number three. But the RBI single pushes across a run and this is now a 31 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And now it’s Juan Sodto and a pitch and a strike on the outside edge. No, there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock around first heading for two. And he’s there with a lead off double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And now big number 99, Aaron Judge. First pitch and he just misses. swings through that one for strike one. Well, that’s today’s style of baseball right there. Right. Big time VO on the bump and big time pop at the plate. And another ball looking to get something going. This is the guy you want at the plate. He’s been great for this team. He is a professional hitter. And that’s a base hit around third. He’ll score easily and they trail by one. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So digging in Anthony Rizzo three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And that one a little below the knees. 1 and0 with a tying run on at first and we’re in the top half of the sixth. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and the count is 2 and 0. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. And the two-1 hammered but fouled and a pitch on the ground to third might be two. Slings to second onto Freddy. Double play. As a former player, watching 543 double plays brings back some adrenaline. It’s such an exciting play and it’s always a great reminder of baseball being such a team sport. John Carlos Stanton at the plate was 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Just missed. There’s the swing and a miss. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Hit on the ground to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Bottom of the sixth inning. Here’s Tay Oscar Hernandez. Here’s a fun fact. Dodger Stadium was also the home of the Los Angeles Angels for four years in the 1960s while they waited for Anaheim Stadium to be built. When the Angels were playing games at home, instead of Dodger Stadium, they called it Chavez Ravine Stadium. Up and in. And it’s one and one. the wind in the pitch in the dirt and the count’s even at two. All set to throw pitch number 100. He needs a quick inning here if he’s going to be able to make it through. Six complete. That misses the zone and the count’s full. the wind to the pitch and that one off the inside edge. He walked him. You know, I think he’s okay with that outcome. It It wasn’t an intentional walk, but he wasn’t exactly trying to attack the zone either. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Garrick Cole is done in this one. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. New pitcher on here, Mark Lighter Jr. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Muny digs in. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off onto the right foot. in for a strike. One-1. Ruer at first with no outs here. Late that time, but it’s strike two. swings and misses. Struck him out. And up to the plate is Will Smith. Here goes the runner. And a foul ball. Right-hander kicks, steals, little chopper, rolls, foul. One-run game. One out, one on. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And it’s one and two. Movement in the Yankees pen. Ian Hamilton, the hardth throwing righty is up and loosening. Kanley also throwing and the righty deals fights that one away. Still one and two. Check on the runner and he dives back in safely. the one two got him swinging and there’s two down. So now here’s the DH. Andy Pahus one for two. Got one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. just missed. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Two outs and another ball. That pitch in for a strike. Three and one and a foul ball. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. and he deals swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. So, the Dodgers leave one, but they still lead at 3-2. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Braasier. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Jazz Chisum Jr. Now, And the pitch that one pulled foul looking to get the tying run on base. Good eye right there. Activity in the bullpen for the Dodgers. Michael Copek up and throwing. Phillips warming up as well. the 1-1 and fouled off. That’s ripped. And this one could be extra bases. And the tying runs at second base with a double. Kevin Kermire coming into the game now as the injury replacement. So next, Anthony Vulpi and that one fouled off. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mound. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. up the middle. Lux throws to first in time. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Austin Wells getting ready to hit. He’s 0 for one with a single base runner. Because of all the power, they are dangerous to tie this thing up or take the lead. that pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But let the bat on his shoulder. Next pitch inside now. Two balls in a strike. The tying run is 90 ft away. This one driven deep center field on its way. Home run. He’ll take a trot around the bases and the Yankees have the lead. It’s 43. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Jack Flareity comes on now. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s the left fielder, Alex Verdugo, in there at the knees. Flarity, 28 years old, and they traded for him earlier this year. Yoan ground ball up the middle. Oh, look at the stop. Gathers and throws and he’ll be safe at first. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. Maybe got a little too excited. He was probably feeling it as well, but either way, that’s a tough play and a tough air. Here is Glabber Torres, one for three and he takes a strike. Verdugo at first. One gone. Good take by Torres. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Labber gets a piece. One and two. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. One, two now. And another ball. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Here’s Wanoto to the right side. Dives and he can’t hang on. The throw is still in time and they end up with two in scoring position after the out at first base. This is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you’ve got the first baseman involved and the pitcher as well. First baseman does a great job. Knocks the ball down, gets away from a little bit, doesn’t panic. The pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. Nice feed and a nice play for the out. Now it’s Aaron. So a second and third occupied. They go for the intentional walk. Base is now loaded. And there’s a force at every base. Two outs. Base is full. Anthony Rizzo now at the plate. Fast ball in for a strike. Going one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. That misses the zone and the count is one and one. The bases are full for the New York Yankees. And a count one and two. Kick Sanios. He fouls it off. Will do it again. Two outs. Line drive. Base hit. One runs in. Two runs are in. Here comes the judge around third. Now a relay to the plate. He’s in there and they lead by four. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Tony Gonulin on a pitch out of the pen here. Number 26. Here’s Stanton now 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and a foul ball. at the belt and fires. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Runner at second. Two down. Got him. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. So, five runs in the inning as they bat around. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Yankee 7 and the Dodgers three. Back here at Chavez Ravine. Here’s Kiermire now. The Dodgers in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Bunting for a hit in there safely. Well, Singy, that was really nice looking. Able to get it down and in a good spot. And he makes it look easy. Bat angle was perfect. Barrel stayed above the hands. Could almost walk to first. They had at first. Here’s the second baseman, Gavin Lux. One more time, baby. Right through there for a strike. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. Kermire gets his lead at first with nobody out. Waves at the bender for the strike out. Well, they used the slow curve very effectively right there. He just spun it up to the plate and had his guy way out front. Not only a good pitch, but a really good job of setting it up. So, the lineup flips over. Tommy Edmond digs in now. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And first offering is fouled off. The Dodgers down by four here in the bottom of the seventh. The O2. That one just misses. The shorts stop takes the ball. Kicks and fires. Still two and two after the foul ball. on the ground to first. Could be two. There’s one onto first. Double play. And that’s the inning. Starting to run out of outs as they’re unable to chip away. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Yankees seven and the Dodgers three. We go to the eighth now. The third baseman, Jazz Chisum Jr. Jazz Chisum Jr. as he turns on the rubber with that good live arm delivers very high with that one. And that’s ball one. Gonellin, a former allstar. He features a fourseam fast ball, a splitter, a slider, and he occasionally uses a curve. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit the pitch. Foul ball still a one and two count. Righty to the plate. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Right-handed reliever. Just missed. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering is in for a strike. And here comes pitch in the dirt. Two and two. And another ball. These first two hitters really making him work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. One down. Base is empty. The punch out there and there’s two down. Bell just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there and I don’t think he was taking it. thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Wells at the plate now. That’s ball one. Next pitch is downstairs. popped up to the left into foul ground. Muny brings it in and that is that nothing across here this half. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Yankee seven and the Dodgers three. Tommy Canley taking over on the mound. Well, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad. Mookie bets will get us started. Outfield playing very deep, not wanting anything over their heads. The pitch outside corner for a strike. Not even close there. And the count even one and one. And that one fouled off the pitch and Muki takes. turns and fires to bets. Spoils that one and it remains two and two and a pitch. Got him swinging. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. And it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Freeman stands in here, takes ball one low. Movement in the bullpen. Ian Hamilton preparing to come on if needed. Here comes the pitch. Had a good eye there. The next pitch misses and now three and 0. The Dodgers down by four here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Freeman will take his base. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter, two balls and no strikes. But now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. Now, this guy’s definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that one ripped out of here. So, he goes the opposite way with that one and they cut into the deficit. It’s 75. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that, they’re back in it. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden they’re back in this ball game. Here comes Max Muny. And that’s in the dirt. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering is in for a strike. And another ball the 2-1. just missed. And that one fouled off outside and that is ball four. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Jonathan Loisa. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. One gone runner at first. And now the catcher comes up to him. Will Smith 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. and fouled off. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out. Tying run at the plate that misses and the count is one and two. The pitch dives but it kicks off his glove. Quick feed to second for one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Well, I really like this right here. He knocked the ball down on that dive and then was able to pick it up, get it to second base, cut that lead runner off. And that’s keeping a guy out of scoring position. Dave Roberts turning to his bench for a new bat. Miguel Rohox. And this is a big at bat coming. Definitely a little added pressure on him here. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. That is the inning. Dodgers claw back a bit with this homer. It’s now 75. All set to start the ninth in this one. And stepping in for the Yankees, Alex Verdugo. The pitch. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Late on that fast ball. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. wouldn’t chase that time. That one way inside. This one in the air. Lux gets under it. And there’s one away. Here’s Glabber Torres. And the first pitch misses for ball one. That one is absolutely belted. Ed one hops the wall. Round second. Digging for third. The relay not in time. He’s safe. Juan Sodto stepping in now for the Yankees. First pitch just misses. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. This be a big pick off if he can push a run across. So, two balls and no strikes in this situation. He’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. Two and0 to count. Here it comes. Strike one. Hard hit right side. Throw on to Freeman. They get the out on Sodto. The center number 99. Aaron Judge at the plate. He’s got the power but great contact skills. One of the best contact hitters in the game. Right through there for a strike. swing and a base hit. In comes the runner from third. It’s eight to five. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Anthony Rizzo stepping in now for the Yankees on the inside corner for a strike. Yankees up by three here in the top of the ninth. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. Here’s a one-two. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Judge the runner at first with two gone. And another ball. Got him. That’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now an 85 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Luke Weaver. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Here’s Kevin Kermire. Pretty amazing going way back. Possibly the best center fielder I’ve ever seen. And he deals. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And the defense comes away with nothing. Nevada number second. And up next for Los Angeles, Gavin Lux outfield playing pretty shallow. That misses ball one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. The Yanks trying to close out a three-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. That clips the corner. The next offering misses. Two balls in a strike. Left hand batter waits. That’s towards center and it drops in. And now runners at the corners. Nobody out. So back to the top of the order. Now it’s the Dodger leadoff hitter Tommy Edmond right through there for a strike. swings and misses and the count is 0 and2. Got him looking and that is a big first out. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. He’s two outs away. Here’s Muki now. A strike out and a walk. Just missed with the tying run at the plate here in the last half of inning number nine. Line drive. Could be extra bases. One runs in. runner around third in to score from first. Back to a one-run game. It’s 87. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Out of the bullpen for the Yankees, Klay Holmes. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Freddy Freeman up to the dish. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time and takes low for ball one. That one ripped but foul. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. And that just misses. That’s a really good take. Swings and misses. struck him out. And they’re down to their last out. That one hammered but pulled foul and misses inside with the tying run at second. And the home team trying to pull it out. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball two. really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Next offering is in for a strike now. Just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. One strike away. Hit to right and that ought to do it. He’s got it. Ball game. The Yankees hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road, you know that you’ve got some work to do. You got to score, but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning. They did just that today. Very well played ball game. Get this win on the road. Everybody’s happy with the W. Our final line score tonight. First for the victorious Yankees. Eight runs on 11 hits. No errors. They left five runners
