🔴LIVE🔴Oakland Athletics vs Toronto Blue Jays/Mlb May 29/Mlb En vivo/ MLB The show 25

week is upon us. It’s Friday evening baseball on the show. It’s the Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch coming your way next. Please welcome your Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch moments away and on the hill the big righty number 65. Base runners are tough to come by with him out there Chris. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. And that one pulled foul and a swing and a miss. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. This one smacked out to left center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Jacob Wilson. El Boo. Not just the fans, not just the people watching this game, but us. I mean, we’re pretty fired up to watch this guy swing the bat. He’s got big time pop this season. Slugging percentage over 500. Outfielders, put your track shoes on because you’re going to be running in the gaps trying to climb the wall. This guy is going to do damage when he gets the bat to the baseball. Don’t take your eyes off of him. Jacob Wilson stands in now and watches strike one. That’s off the mark and it’s one and one. One out. Base is empty. Baby, come on. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. And now the right fielder Brent Rooker. And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. just missed. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Nothing doing there for the A’s. And now the Blue Jays will get their initial shot. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. And on the hill, Luis Severino. And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. We go to the bottom of the first and now for the Jays. Dalton Vo. Foul ball there and the 01. Slapped hard the other way but foul. Hackon misses. It’s a strikeout. Anthony Santandere at the plate. Anthony and ball one. And that one hammered. That ball’s carrying. And it’s into the bullpen for a homer. He muscles that one out the opposite way. His seventh home run of the season. The Blue Jays on the board first. It’s one- nothing. You can’t ask for a better start than hitting a home run in your first at bat to give your team the lead. There was a fast ball down the middle. I don’t think the hitter recognized the pitch, but once he did, was quick enough to get it in play with some authority. He got that up and out of here. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. I love the fact that we’ve seen both Vladimir Guerrero and Vlatty Jr. win the home run derby. They’re the first fatherson duo to ever win it. Vlatty back in 2007 and Vlatty Jr. in 2023, even though his dad didn’t give him any advice for the event other than to go out there and hit home runs. Swing and a ball popped up. Makes the catch. Two down. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. George Springer stands in here. Tried to hold back his swing there, but went around. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Two out. Space is empty. Just misses with that one. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Langelers makes the play and it’s out number three. Jays open it up with a solo homer. It’s now one- nothing. Back after this on the show. Top of the second. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Soder Stroke. Tyler’s strong and that one a little bit high out towards right center. That’s well struck. And wow, that one is way out of here. That’ll fire up the dugout. His 11th of the year. And it ties it up. It’s 1-1. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. swings and sends a rocket to right. Springer there makes the catch and there’s one down. Batting catcher Shay Langelers. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. There’s the swing and a miss. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. One down. Base is empty. That’s ripped. Base hit. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. You got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. One down. Next up for the A’s, CJ Alexander and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. the pitch. Gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one. Well, with Simmons, it’s not always your standard strike zone. Boog. It kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others. But I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent. So, you got to stay ready up there. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s two and one. Yeah. One of those umpires you just have to know what to expect, right? Exactly. Way out front for strike two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Can’t get their base hit. They get the force. They get him, but it was pretty close. Wow. This is one of those plays that happens sometimes, but it never really should. Seems like he just got a bad read on the ball, and the good throw from the outfield was perfect to get the out. Here’s Luis Oas. Fast in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. on the corner for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Just missing there. Now one and two. That one just misses. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Out of the ground to third. And the inning is over. The A’s draw even on the solo shot. All even at one a piece. Major League Baseball is on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the third baseman, Addison Barer. Barger Severino back to work. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. It’s in and out of his glove. still manages a throw. Safe. It was never going to be easy after the misplay. Leadoff man aboard on the error and that puts your pitcher in a little bit of a tough spot right away to start the inning. Not where you want to be. So, we’ll see if he’s able to work around it and pick the defense up. Ernie Clement next up for the Blue Jays. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Way high with that one. And that’s ball one. Rudder at first with no outs here. And that clips the inside corner. Swinging a miss. One and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. trying to stay out of the double play right here. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. There comes the throw and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. Nathan Lucas the next to hit. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Bottom half of inning number two. just missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two and one now. Severino as a veteran out there on the ball, you’re trying to establish both edges of the plate right here. He’s working inside. Severino kicks, steals, and now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Hit on the ground. Might be two. Glove flip for one. They get the out, but the run scores on the Twin Killing. First and third, nobody out. You’re thinking you’ve got it lined up for a pretty big inning right here. So, that double play is pretty deflating. They get the run in, but now they’re starting all over. Ali Sanchez next up for the Blue Jays outside and it’s one and0. just missed. And the sweeper is in for a strike. Swing and a miss. That one in the dirt onto first. That completes the strikeout and that’ll do it. But they push across one run, one hit, an error, and nobody left on. We played two full Blue Jays two and the A’s one. On to the third inning. Here’s the center fielder, Denzel Clark. Denzel Clark on the inside corner for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Right down to shoot. And that is strike two. Well, we call that keyholeing. even though it’s right there and looks pretty good. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. A change up missing and that is ball one. Butler goes 6 feet 3 in 24 years old. He’s usually in right field but today he’s getting the DH treatment. That one is absolutely belted. Did one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And now the tying run is into scoring position. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know, you got some real estate to run on. And such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. Now, a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. One out, runner at second. Now, it’s the shortstop, Jacob Wilson, and fouled off. Well, a nice day off for him. Not having to jog out to the outfield. Gets to be in the DH spot. Be curious to see how he keeps himself in a rhythm, not playing defense. Runner at second here. One gone on the ground right side. Slinging it to first in time. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Brent Rooker getting ready to hit. He’s 0 for one. Bats in there. That’s strike one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But let the bat on his shoulder. And that one is lifted in the air. Varo moving under it. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. Back here at Rogers Center, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Michael Stefonic. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. into center. Clark on the move. Snags it on the run. One away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Vo in the box now. No balls in a strike. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Two strikes. There’s a swing and a drive and that one is off the wall. The throw into second and he’s safe. It’s a wall ball double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. He absolutely ripped that ball out front and almost got it out of here. Man, just a really strong balanced swing and a fraction of an inch different on the bat and it is probably out of here. So up next for Toronto, Anthony Santandere. He’s already homered here in this one and there’s a foul ball. Here comes the runner takes off for third. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Blue Jays. Severino fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s and a seed into center. That’s a base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Guerrero batting with one down. Takes the strike. They’ll sing. This is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. Sons whose fathers also played the majors and a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Stringing them together, that’s three hits in a row. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Luis Severino out of the game. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. The pitcher out here, Justin Sterner. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. First and second, one out. Now the Toronto four-hole hitter George Springer 0 for one so far. Swaying and a miss. There’s the slider and it’s 0 and one. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, them being on the baseball field, for some it’s pressure for them, they feel that they are right at home. And that one way outside. going to count one and two. Santandere on second. Guerrero over at first with one away. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. BS it off. Still one and two. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Oh, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Addison Barger digs in now. Barger not having as much success with the bat here at home as you see the splits in the dirt. Blocked. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Anthony Maldonado appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Sears a left-hander also throwing. Two on, two outs. This one smoked could be trouble. Headed for the plate. One run across coming home. The relay and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. So, two runs on four hits, no errors, and one left on base. Three innings complete. It’s the Blue Jays four and the A’s won. Back now in Toronto, John Shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Tyler Soderstrom. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Braden Fiser appears to be getting loose. Little also throwing. Comes up empty. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across, this is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Swing and he breaks his bat, makes the catch for the out. Here’s Miguel Duhar. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. First pitch and he just misses. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Next offering upstairs, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. And that one fouled off. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. One down, base is empty to the right side and he takes it himself for the out. Now that and Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the power hitting catcher. Shay Langalers one for one with a single so far. And that’s in there for strike one just off the inside edge. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Little bit low. Hit hard on the ground to short. Zips it across. The A’s go quietly. And the A’s are gone in order. And this is still a 41 ball game. Ready to go. Bottom four. And now to the plate. Here’s the Toronto DH. Ernie Clement. That one’s in there. Strike one. hit in the air. Right field diving, gets down. Could be extra bases. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second. And he makes it into third with a leadoff triple. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. He hit into a double play his first time up. That one finds the corner. Strike one. Ground ball right side. Alexander the flip to the pitcher covering. That’s out number one. And a run comes in to score. And now it’s going to be Ali Sanchez. He’s 0 for one. Sanchez. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. That one fouled off. goes down looking. And now Michael Stefanic. Second base. Michael Stefonic. First offering and it just misses. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. And that is out of play. Straighten him up a little bit. And that one is downstairs. And it’s a full count. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Belly tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Back to the leadoff spot in the Blue Jays lineup. Now here’s the leadoff man for the Blue Jays. Dalton Vo. He swings and fouls one off. Stefonic leads off first with two down to the inning. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Gets to it with a slide. It’s there and that’s a great play. So, one run on one hit. No errors and a runner left. We played four. It’s the Blue Jays five and the A’s one. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Chris Basset. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. And now the first base, CJ Alexander. The Athletics in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. In for a strike. It’s 0 and one inside. Just missed. The one-1 is fouled off. That’s too low. And it’s two and two. That one almost got him. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. That’s a nice atbat and a great take on 32. Probably could have gone either way in that spot around the knees. Luis Urias up next for the A’s. First time up he grounded to third. right through there for a strike. Well, the laid-off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. That one drifts inside. The 1-1 is fouled off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Foul ball still a one and two count. Come on, Blue Jays. Let’s go. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Puts the tag on him and it’s a double play. You know, Boo, this is the part of the game that often time is overlooked. This is the grunt work. Great job of the catcher using his body to deaden that pitch. Keeps it close and then throws a strike down to second. Hats off. Tap to first. Guerrero. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. A’s go quickly and quietly there. They’re down here 5 to one. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth. And taking over on the mound, Anthony Maldonado. Anthony Maldonado. Stepping in is the switch hitting shorts stop Anthony Santandere. He’s already homerred in this game. Santandere and that’s in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. with a short stop. Takes a ball and he grounds one back up the middle. Handles, throws to first and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting first base. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. One for two. MVP. MVP. First pitch misses. This to third. Fires across the diamond and Guerrero is set down. Now batting rightielder. Here’s George Springer. That one down the line and it goes just fouled. The one Foul. Springer swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for the Blue Jays. They lead this one though 5-1. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher Jose and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler. Swings through that one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Next pitch is outside. swinging a ground ball. Come on. Boots it. man at first. The batter now, Jacob Wilson. The mo for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average. Not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Well, that’s why it’s a team. And when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. Butler gets his lead at first with nobody out. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. And there’s the strike. And that’s will the swing. It’s a strikeout. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. Bowl for two in this one. And first offering is fouled off. Man at first, one away. And it’s fouled away. sets him down on strikes and they’re down to their last out. Tyler Soderstroke up next for the A’s that clips a corner. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. One strike away. That one misses. One and two count. That’s inside. That one outside. And that’s ball three. Hit to the left side and this is going to do it onto first. Ball game. I don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team. Every ball club wants to be dominant at home. Winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one. 51 is how it ends. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
