MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Washington Nationals – May 30, 2025 | MLB Full Game – MLB 25

Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. We’ve got open air baseball for you on the show. It’s the Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. Well, singy here in Arizona and this is a ballpark where traditionally the ball has jumped, but a few years back they installed that humidor and now offense has been neutralized a little and I think hitters still in their minds believe that the ball does carry and that can produce some confidence as you step into the plate for your at bats. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about set to go now. And on the hill, Ryan Nelson and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. And that one fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Knock him out. That one ripped in. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second safely. It’s a leadoff double to start the game. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that, but he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now it’s Ahmed Rosario slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Runner at second. Nobody out. Come on, Ryan. Now one swing and a miss at a slider. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down. That’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. Fouls it off. Still one and two. No outs. Runner on second. fights it off. He’ll see [Applause] another fights that one away. Still one and two. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Swing and a popup. Marte hustling after it. Grabs it on the run. One away. That third the designated hitter. Martinez lineup for the Nationals. Singi. We’re looking at a young lineup here. Not much experience, but they’re going to bring a lot of energy to the field. Yeah, and that’s just it, Boo. We expect this lineup to play hard no matter what. They are an exciting group to watch. So, up next, James Wood. Go home. Swings through that one for strike one. One’s the count. Abrams over at second. One down. Inside corner for a strike. that one 95 to finish him off. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base pads and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s Nathaniel Low. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and0. Let’s go back. Fouled off left side. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO. Just missed. the ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position. And a hitter’s count. Diamond. That one in there across the letters. [Music] [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. Set down on strikes went back to the fast and it was effective. So, a leadoff double but they can’t cash it in. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. [Applause] Back here at Chase Field and on the mound today, Mike Siroka. What do we have on him? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Catel Marte leading things off and takes a strike. Sarroa in his seventh season. He features a slider, a fourseamer, a sinker, and he works in a change up and in, and the count even one and one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way, and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Outside low, two and one. And that clips the inside corner. Line drive and that’s a base hit to right. So runner aboard to start the inning. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, lifted into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. This is Corbin Carroll. And a fast ball clips the outside corner for a strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. Next pitch is inside. One and one. And that skips in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Right-hander kicks, steals down on strikes, and now one away. Well, this is no secret that slider is going to be his go-to pitch. Everyone in the ballpark knows it. It’s a massive part of his arsenal, and he’ll throw it a lot, and in pretty much any count, any situation, and he’s going to look to punch guys out as well. I tell you what, the effectiveness of that slider is always a big key for him. man at first. One away. Hit softly on the ground to third to second for one and it’s over his head into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Well, kind of the story of their season so far. Things just not clicking into place. fundamentals on all sides of the ball are lacking and it’s tough to win games at this level if you’re not playing clean baseball as a team. Runners of the corners here, one away. Audio Suarez up to hit now, misses inside. And that’s ball one. [Applause] And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Ball two. This one in the dirt. Well done behind the dish. First and third, one down. [Applause] Grounder might be two feed to second. That’s one. It’s a double play. First frame of the night behind us and it’s nothing to nothing. Back here in the desert, second inning, set to go up now for Washington. Alex call right through there for a strike. Slice the other way and foul. Finish him. [Applause] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. He had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now up for Washington Dalen Lyle and that’s a little bit high and that is ball one Nelson. He isn’t really known as a starting pitcher that’s going to get you deep into the start. It’s not that he’s not capable, he just hasn’t proven that he can do it yet. One down, base is empty, and that one is downstairs. And it’s two and 0. He’s got such great stuff. You just don’t know from start to start whether it’s a potential no hitter or it’s a guy that’s only going to give you three or four innings. Now fly ball to right center. Under it, makes the grab for the second out. But for the most part with that kind of stuff, you expect him to get to the middle of the ball game. catcher Riley Adams. Two out, space is empty, and it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Riley Adams. What does he need to do in order to get deeper into the game? Well, I’d say it’s command of the secondary pitches because when you’re talking about turning over the order a second and third time and guys are getting looks, you’ve got to be able to put a wrinkle on something, change speeds and locate it enough so that they offer at it and it’s one and one. Ultimately, you want them to swing and chase a pitch that teases the zone and ends outside the zone. But so far, he hasn’t been able to do that consistently. That missed by a lot. Two and one. [Music] Foul ball there. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Two out. Space is empty. Got it. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nationals go quietly. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. [Applause] Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now it’s Josh Naylor. and Josh Naylor. [Applause] Fouled off. He was late. And that one misses up and in. Ball one. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes he might get a little jumpy, a little excited to expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it, and that’s important because you got to make players earn it. That one at the knees for a strike. How much were you aware of the umpire scouting report or even who was going to be umpiring? Not a whole lot. I mean, there were a couple of umpires that weren’t real good, but outside of that, you just kind of went into the game, especially back when I was playing. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Dives. What a play. That is his right fielder Randle Bridgette. So a great diving catch and that was only possible because of the route he took to get there. Right Chris? Yeah. Statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was. In fact, that’s about as good as it gets. Pretty much a direct line to it. And perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life. I don’t know. But man, great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well. No fumble caused by the ground. And that misses two and 0. One out. Base is empty. That’s off the inside corner and it’s three and0. There’s a strike on the ground right side and it goes just foul. And he grounds one to the right side and foul ball. Got him swinging for the strike out. Ugly cut on the slider for strike three. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from the same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Now at the plate, Gabrielle Moreno just off the inside edge. So a foul ball makes it one and two. swings and misses. Struck him out. Diamondbacks down quickly. Move to the third with no score. And we’re back. And now here is Nunes Nunes. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Late swing fouled to the left. towards first. Naylor, he’ll do it himself. And one away in the top of the third. Batting ninth, centerfielder Robert Hassel II. Robert Hassel the third digging in for the Nationals. [Music] There’s the strike. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. [Applause] And the slider just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And a swing and a miss. Now five strikeouts for him on the M. Well, that was the cutter down and in right there. And typically if you’re going to have a chance with the pitch, if it’s down, that’s your best chance of doing anything with it. It’s kind of like a mini slider, just with a little less vertical movement. But still, that one tied him up. Couldn’t get the barrel to it. So, the net slide up turns over. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals. And there’s the strike. All one’s the count. Top of the third. No score. Ripped to short, snagged on a bounce to first. And that’s a nice play to end the inning. And the Nationals gone in order. And we’re still knotted at zero. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now number 13, center fielder number 13 Sroa back to work. There’s the strike at the knees and there’s a base hit to left and a good start to the inning. All over that one right there. absolutely punished that pitch. Wasn’t in the slightest. 109 off the bat. I think that means you put a pretty good swing on it. And now the shorts stop. Heraldo Purdomo. Soka throwover and he’s back in there. That misses. That’s ball [Applause] one up the middle into the outfield. Base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Nice swing to drive that pitch up the middle. Could have easily been out in front on the off speed and pulled off of it, but he was looking to use the big part of the field and he executed his plan perfectly. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Here’s Catel Marte and that drops in for a strike. No outs. Ruers at first and [Applause] second. Hit hard but foul off to the left. [Applause] That’s down and in. A slider missed. [Applause] That’s inside. [Applause] Ground ball right side. Could be two. Over to second for one. And they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first base has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Carol getting ready to hit. Just missed. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Two outs with a runner at third. I got a ball. One [Applause] strike. Sliced hard but fouled. Two outs. Got him. Swinging for the K. Throws to first in time. Third out. So, no runs on two hits, no errors, and a runner left. On to inning number four. No score. Back here at Chase Field. John Chi with Chris Singleton. and set to lead off the fourth. Ahmed Rosario, [Music] that finds the mark on the inside corner. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Next offering is in for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. One ball, two strikes. Next offering misses down and away. [Music] [Applause] A two- two and a foul ball. He stays alive. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. on the ground at first and that’s just foul. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. Man, that was a pretty good battle to play. And I’ll tell you, feels pretty good as a hitter when you grind out a hit like that. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. And the batter now, James Wood. Slow ground ball to the right side down the line and it’s foul. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Ball one in the dirt and it’s a ball and a strike as the runner holds. Rousario on first. Nobody out and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. One, two now. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. And there’s one down. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Rousario on the move. The throw tag and he’s out. That goes to show you stealing a base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing. Even with big time speed, it’s not easy to catch him. But that was a great catch and throw. Quick, not rushed, and accurate. Fourth inning underway. No score. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. All right, back. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. And that’s the third out. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. And midway in the fourth, we’re tied nothing. Nothing back here in the desert. Now, the left fielder, Lordis Gore Jr. Leftielder. Goriel measures 6′ 4 in, 31 years old, and he was born in Cuba. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point and one and two. One ball, two strikes to count. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Lyle makes the grab. One away. Now batting third baseman Auano Auo Suarez up to the plate now. Scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Now one miss one ball. One strike. Bounce to third. Rousario. The throw to first. Now two away. Now batting the first baseman Josh Naylor. Here’s Josh Naylor. He’s 0 for one. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Generally, second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job. Two down to highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one is back. That’ll make it out of [Applause] here. That one felt good. His seventh home run of the season. It’s one nothing. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swe from the boot. [Applause] A breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Randall Grimick [Applause] now. And first pitch fast is in for a strike. [Applause] and that’s down and away. That’s a strike and it’s one and two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Dexs get one on the solo jack. It’s now one- nothing. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning. Up now for Washington. Alex, left fielder. Alex Call just missed activity in the Arizona bullpen. Shelby Miller, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Thompson getting cranked up as well. [Music] That’s off the mark. Now 2 and 0. Two balls, no strike. And there’s the strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. pull it off. Two and two. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another to the right side. Throws to first and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting number 51. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Ryan Nelson departs and a nice effort out of him. No doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Shelby Miller comes on now. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. and the numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Number 18, Shelby Miller. So, digging in, Dalen Lyall, inside just missed. Next pitch is downstairs. The Diamondbacks leading by a run. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. That one fouled off. Two and two. One down, base is empty. Chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Next offering upstairs. Two balls, no strikes. [Music] Here’s a chopper to short for Domo. Throw not in time. It’s an unlikely infield single with two outs. You just want to find a way to keep the line moving for the next guy. So, an infield single right there does the job. Nicely done. Just putting it in play and getting down to first to keep this inning alive. You never know what might come next as a result. So, man aboard and now it’s the switch in second baseman Nasim Nunes. And there’s a foul ball. Here’s he’ll one swings through that ball. Got him. And the inning is over. Nationals leave one. They still trail one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And here’s the catcher, Gabrielle Marino. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Now the one. This one chopped to first and he takes it himself for the out. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. Here’s the center fielder. One for one with a single so far. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Inside corner for a strike and it’s one and one. All right. Fought off foul. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Next pitch misses. It’s two and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. 2-2 now. Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Call moving under it. Makes the catch for the out. Two down. Up next for the Diamondback. Two down. Base is empty. Next to hit for Arizona. Heraldo Pomo. A single his first time. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Clips the corner and that’s strike two. Back door with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So, the lineup flips over. Here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter, Catel Marte. One for two. Hard hit to third to first. They get the out on Marte and the inning is over. One left for Arizona, but they’re on top one- nothing. Back here at Chase Field. And now Robert Hassel the third. [Applause] Miller back to work. Strike one. Action in the pen down there. Kendall Graveman up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. McGuff also getting ready. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play [Applause] that misses the zone. It’s a ball in two strikes. Two strike down. Got him looking and he’s registered threeks in this one. Well, he throws him with a great fast right on the corner. It’s kind of like bowling. The ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike. Here’s CJ Abrams now. And that’s in there for strike one. That one catches the corner. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. Foul ball still 0 and two. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Third base. Now the number two hitter Ahmed Rousario. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one with a tying run on at first. And we’re the top half of the six. That one found hard the other [Applause] way. 0 and two now. Runner takes off. Got him swinging. Go to second. And that’ll end the inning. He’ll strike him out, throw him out to end the inning. trying to force some action on offense, but he was all over it behind the plate. New arm out of the bullpen. Trevor Williams just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Trevor Williams. Well, one-run game. And now the DH Corbin Carolated hitter Corbin Carroll. A little bit high. Ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Andrew Chaffen preparing to come on if needed. Bull. That’s out. struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at two and 0. In for a strike and it’s two and one. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. that catches the outside corner and it’s a full count. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Corbyn goes down on strikes. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him. make this adjustment really quick cuz Word will get around the league in a hurry and first offering is fouled off. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Adams makes the grab and there’s two gone. There’s always a concern when running over towards the dugout because of that on deck circle. There’s usually a bat, a weighted bat, a donut, a pine tar rag. Catchers have to be really heads up to avoid that stuff. Suarez in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. That’s in there. 0 and2 quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. The 02. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. On the ground, right side, he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Nationals nothing. Now, pitching. Welcome back. In the seventh, we have a new pitcher on the M, Jaylen Beaks. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, one game digging in for the Nationals for two in this one. swing and a pop off in foul. Brown has room and he makes the catch. One pitch, one out. Now batting first baseman, Nathaniel Low. Next to hit for the Nats, Nathaniel Low. on the ground to third over to first and two away to start the seven. Those plays can be tricky in a routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. And now up for Washington, Alex call. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. looking to get the tying run on base. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. [Music] Swing and a miss. And that is that. Nothing doing it for Washington. They’re down one- nothing. [Applause] Back here in the desert, bottom of the seventh and now the first baseman, Josh Naylor for the Diamondbacks. First baseman, Josh Naylor. Closed, but called a ball. And that’s ball one. There’s a swing and a try and that’s got extra bases written all over it. Now he’ll turn for second. Makes it safely. It’s a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. Great hands on that swing to take the inside pitch and drive it into the gap for the double. It’s easy to spin off a pitch like that, Berg, and can pull that thing foul. But that was perfect. Next up in the Diamondbacks, Randall Gritic, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts inside and that is ball one. You know, these Dbacks digging into their numbers, have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Popped up on the left side of the infield. Rosario, nabs it and there’s one down. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Gabrielle Moreno stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one outside. One and0. One out and a runner at second here. The bottom of the seventh. In the air, left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Good pitch. She just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. And now the center fielder, he has singled and he has flyed to left. [Applause] just missed. That’s in for a strike. [Applause] And that’s him for a strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Just off the outside edge. The countdown two and two. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Rudder at second. Two down. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. So a missed opportunity after the leadoff double as they strand the runner. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Nationals nothing. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kendall Graveman. These are the spots where Levers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Up now for Washington. Den Lin. [Applause] First offering misses badly for ball one. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Justin Martinez, the closer getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity. the one outside. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] and that is out of play. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Riley Adams in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Hit hard on the ground to short toss to Naylor and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Everyone appreciates when a short stop makes a play like that. Your manager is smiling over there and your teammates are loving it. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals and that one upstairs. Ball one [Applause] and now two and nothing. Two balls, no strike. Out in front and fouled to the left side, holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] Swang and a miss. Missed that by a mile. It’s two and two. One down. Base is empty. Free. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Nim Nunees in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] This to third. Suarez. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Second base, Nasim. Here’s the second base, Nasim Nunes. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. splits the plate and it’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Pitch misses there and a count even. One and one. One check swing appeal down to third. Eddie one around the swing. And the slider just misses. Two balls, two strikes. And there’s the ball. Three and two. Robert Hassel III in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact [Music] here. in that played appearance works the walk. Almost a coin flip for the umpire in that call, but most umpires just don’t want to give pitchers a break up in the zone like that. Robert Hassel the third digging in for the Nationals. Graveman throws to first and he’s back in easily. He’s got plus speed, but in this situation, all eyes are going to be over there trying to keep his lead tight. [Applause] and he takes the strike. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Runner on the move. Pitch misses. Safe at second. And that was not close. And the tying run is now in scoring position. [Applause] Ruer goes again. That’s in for a strike. Throw to third and that will end the inning. When you get thrown out of third with two outs, you kind of want to keep on running. Not a great decision there as it ends the inning. Now pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jose a Ferrer. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Permo. [Music] Perdomo up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. A short stop takes the [Applause] ball. Slice to right. Now batting second baseman, Catel Mart. Back to the top of the order. Now up next for Arizona, Catel Marte. He had a foul ball and a seed into center. That’s a base hit. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three with three strikeouts. The other way. And there’s one away. Now batting left fielder Lordis Guriel. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. 0 for three in this one. [Music] Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Next offering is in for a strike on the ground to third. Fired to second and that’s two. No runs on two base hits. No errors and one man left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Nationals nothing. Now pitching for the and on the mound the closer Justin Martinez. Now this is an extremely confident pitcher. He loves the pressure. actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable three-run save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best. Passel can’t hold up and that’s a strike. Oh, and one. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Applause] H misses. It’s a strike out. Well, the first batter, it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that, you know, you’re going to wrap this thing up. Abs up to bat next. lays off for a ball right through there for a strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. [Applause] One and two now. The shorts stop takes a ball. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. [Applause] He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. One down, base is empty and it remains two and two. [Applause] Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch. Even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Three balls, two strikes the count. Strike three and that’s two in a row. This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer. Come in and just destroy all hope. First two batters, two strikeouts. See if he can strike out the side. Last chance for the Nats in this one. And now Ahmed Rousario. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. That one missed two and0. [Applause] And that is cut on and miss. Two and one. Now there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end on the ground and this should do it. throw to first ball game and the Diamondbacks claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. Well, this one was all about the pitching and defense. Outstanding job of the pitchers really attacking hitters, trusting what the catcher was putting down and trusting the players standing behind him to make the plays defensively. Sometimes you want to see a high-scoring game, but sometimes you can appreciate the artistic beauty of what these pitchers did on the mound today. The final one to nothing. They hang on to win it by a run for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
