If it happens all one can hope is that Darth Playoff Marner is unlocked
[deleted]
I want defense before I want more scoring tbh.
We don’t have trouble scoring. We need to figure out our blue line and goaltending. Silver lining is it has the potential to show people that were serious and can sign players
Not sure offense is our problem. Probably should be going after defensemen
Depends on the money he wants. Marner should still be a point a game player even if he doesn’t have Mathews, JT, or willy around him. He will probably help to improve the production of the people who’s line he is on and players of his caliber (regardless of playoff ability) don’t just grow on trees. But we can’t bet everything on one player that is why it depends on the money.
Anyone not excited by the idea of adding that guy is smoking fucking crack. The problem in Toronto wasn’t him, it was the entire core 4 and whatever they created when they came together. Different team, different circumstances, I think the guy shines. Also, we can benefit from being the “settle down and have a family” market since his wife just gave birth, and I’m sure that’s a large consideration for him. I think we tick a lot of boxes for him actually, in that we can back up a Brinks truck to his house, AND we’re probably a year or two away from consistent playoffs, at most.
He’s not a priority IMO but if the price happens to be right, why not?
My thought is: If we get Marner, that makes Cbus more attractive for other UFAs we want. Yeah?
I’m on the “throw him a bag of money” side. Columbus is in such a unique position where they can overpay him and still not jeopardize the future with signing fantilli or Marchy
Don wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t do this imo. I could go either way. I think he would absolutely be an improvement and anyone saying otherwise is crazy. However we need to sure up our defense and goaltending. That being said we have the money to do all the above so why the fuck not.
Absolutely. Marner will already feel more comfortable in Columbus as far as being protected against teams like Florida. Same age as Olivier, and a really nice defense there too
I don’t like it I don’t care what any of y’all say bottom line is he chokes in big games
The problem is paying the rest of the guys. But we could probably get Marner and then have all our guys hit and have to be paid, and be okay.
Good. We should be in for him.
We can worry about playoff scoring when we actually become a team that consistently gets into the playoffs.
So many fans are acting like our biggest concern in adding a forward is how they might perform in the playoffs in a lower pressure market.
Do I want a defender more? Yes. Can we do both? Yes.
Why on earth, with the cap we have, would I want to turn down an extra 80-100 points per season?
Vegas is a well run team. A really well run team. If they are not concerned then I’m not concerned. Vegas will bin anyone they don’t think is an upgrade in a heartbeat, they are pretty ruthless.
I doubt he comes here, but I’m glad we are in on him.
Coming directly from Pagnotta’s article: “Teams with a boatload of cap space may be willing to go above and beyond financially like Anaheim, Columbus and San Jose”.
Big difference between that and that the team is “preparing a big offer”.
The only leaf I really want is woll lmao (I still love you Elvis)
Don’t listen to the headlines. Marner was far from the reason Toronto was failing. He honestly would fit in well with our culture and he’ll feel safer in general in Columbus. He’ll be an amazing pick up if we are able to swing it.
I am so prepared for this motherfucker to look great in the first half and for that deal to age horribly in the back half. Please god any team without state tax take him before we pay more than 13 million for this choker.
Yes, with the way it’s worded though it appears we’re not one of the teams he’s “looking at” though.
Dreger also says he’s mostly looking at teams with no income tax benefits.
So that’s Seattle, Dallas, Vegas, Florida, Tampa, and Nashville.
To me I think he’s either going to Vegas or LA. But I hope he signs here
To those of you saying we have more pressing needs on D, and we need to do something about our goalie situation- Waddell has made it clear that both our first round picks are available for trade for the right players. Getting Marner costs us nothing- he is a UFA. We have a ton of cap space to address all our needs.
I’m onboard but doubtful we are his first choice. Teams will be lining up.
There’s a lot of very fair concerns about him being a playoff dropper. That being said, he’s a 100 point playmaking winger. Imaging adding him next to Fantilli or on the other side of Marchenko. Plus he won’t have the media pressure that seems to affect him.
I would be shocked if he actually came here though.
Guy is instantly a top 3 player we’ve ever had offensively
If we could add him, and at least one top dman, we’ll be sitting good. Marner, Marchenko, Fantilli and Johnson is a potent group of forwards, if we could swing in Bennett and dman, I’d be really excited.
I thought last time we were in the conversation about him, he said he didn’t want to be here.
