While the Cardinals have been more entertaining than expected, the shift to considering being buyers is the absolute wrong move for the Cardinals going forward. If the Cardinals were to be a smart team, which they do need to be now, even with contending for a wildcard they should be trading away as many valuable pieces as they can which won't be here next year due to free agency and no money or realistic interest to resign them. Players who are valuable, but still have another year under contract or control could be retained, but if any team is willing to overpay at the deadline for them, then that is the time for them to go. Even players like Arenado who still has multiple years of control should be shopped around again as he has no future with this team and potentially a very short future remaining in the majors. If Mozeliak on his way out gives up prospects to slightly bolster a team which has no path to success in the playoffs and doesn't bring in as many good prospects in value for trading expiring contracts it will be a sabotage to the team's future and a middle finger to Bloom's capability to bring the Cardinals back to true contention.
