Mukhamadullin’s DARING Contract with Sharks | Is He Set for a BREAKOUT Season?
the San Jose Sharks get a jump start on their offseason plans by resigning Shakir Mukadul We break it down You’re Locked on Sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the Locked on Podcast Network your team every day Hello welcome to Locked on Sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area My name is JD Young caretaker at the Reef also the co-host of Locked on NHL Want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first or maybe second listen of the day Uh proudly part of the Lockdown Network where we cover your team every day If you want to be an everyday all you have to do just follow wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well And today we’re going to be doing a nice kind of 20 minute episode on Shakir Mukuman who resigned uh with the San Jose Sharks today Uh we’re going to kind of break it down what this means for Mukuma Madulan Um kind of why the Sharks might just slightly slightly slightly got a deal here Um and then more importantly what it means for Mukuman and why he could be setting himself up for a really nice payday uh this time next year So before we get to all that do want to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel Right now new FanDuel customers can get $200 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins All right Uh Shakir Mukmulan resigned the RFA uh resigned for a one-year deal at $1 million with the San Jose Sharks Um and you’re going to this was kind of rumored for the past you know week or so that he would probably be resigning soon And you’re probably going to see a lot of news and transactional stuff over the next kind of course of the week especially maybe this weekend Um as we have the NHL combine next week right this is kind of the first time that GMs and agents and kind of everybody’s all in the same place So can kind of put some of these finishing touches on some of these deals or whatever has been kind of worked on So um don’t be surprised if you see and we’ve already kind of seen throughout the NHL landscape right now Uh you know Tyson Forester got signed ressigned today Like you’re starting to kind of some nuggets and stuff starting to come out here So um but for Mukma Dulan right um one-year deal it’s very much kind of a a a bit of a prove it deals yourself type of deal for Shakir Mukumadan So uh let’s kind of break down Mukuman’s season before we look ahead Uh Mukuman of course uh started the season on IR Um he had what turned out to be a groin injury Uh kind of kept him out the first month of the season Started the season with a barracuda Uh and then got recalled for the second half of the year to play with the Sharks Uh of course ended the season uh with on IR because or with an injury because of a Frank Vrono play that uh where he ended up having to have shoulder surgery So um but between then the injuries Mukadillan played pretty well this year So um with the Sharks he played 30 games had two goals seven assists with 30 shots on goal averaging about 18 minutes of of time on ice Um Cory4 so when he’s on the ice the Sharks took 48% of the shots Um goals for when he was on the ice the Sharks scored about 39.39% of the goals when he was on the ice um with the Barracuda He played 21 games zero goals nine assists with 20 shots on goal Um and about midway through the season kind of right before Muk McDullan was recalled I did a whole thing like what’s up with Muk Mulan right because you didn’t really see the offense that we had seen the previous year from Muk Magdullan And a big part of that was because of what was asked of him right the the Sharks or the Barracuda had really revamped their blue line and the emergence of Luca Canyone who I think was a surprise to make the Barracuda um kind of going into the off season and then last year’s offseason right and just you know the additions of Parolski um not Potterski but uh you know like Jim Jimmy uh Schul like some of the other pieces that they added muk just wasn’t really asked to play the same role um and kind of played more of a defensive shutdown role Um and you saw that translate over when he was in the NHL Um his evolving hockey card he didn’t play really enough uh games to qualify kind of for um you know like at the percentiles and stuff but played around second pairing minutes had had good defensive numbers The offensive numbers weren’t there which is what you would expect right for for younger players especially defenseman right are going to focus on don’t make a mistake and eventually the offense will come But he had good offensive numbers good numbers in the you know was on the verge of of having good numbers um defensively uh in his his small sample size Um was projected as a 50% war player 78% even straight defense 75% um on the PK um you know was was good on penalties didn’t face the toughest competition and had a little you know uh decent teammates as well but you know I think for Muk Mullan you saw a player who played really well in in those limited minutes and you know in the opportunity that he had um you know looking ahead at his hockey stat card again the defensive rating is a plus here at a plus.3 offensive rating at a minus 3.6 six uh which is what you would expect right from Mukumad Dullan and as I think he’s going to be a little bit of a slow burner when it comes to getting the offense going and you did see uh you know some sustained offense there with him and uh he was putting up you know points having you know just four out of six games with points stuff like that but not kind of driving the offense uh I would I would say is a fair assessment for for Muk Mull in the season Um as for his usage chart he was given um mostly defensive deployment but kind of did face a little bit weaker competition but he did well in his role Um and kind of average top four two-way defenseman Um it was kind of the the role that he kind of carved out for himself and before his injury So um again like for Mukuma Madulan you I think if he doesn’t start the the the season injured with a groin injury and you know you we know with those groin injuries right you you you really can’t do anything until they heal and if you try I think what happened right was he tried to push it too soon prolong the injury and then he missed a bunch of time at the beginning of the season um you’re but if he doesn’t have that injury we’re probably looking I think Mukad the way he was playing before he got hurt at the end of the season he was really coming along especially that game against Anaheim was one of his best games in a while um before he uh before he actually got hurt um like he was he was balling out that game to be honest it’s that’s what really sucked about that game was that he was playing really really well that game um and unfortunately right uh we know what happened there So um but Muk Madulan you know I think coming out of the season you you feel like he is definitely you know trending to be a a you know core piece of of the Sharks blue line Um and has been a little bit longer development with him Um but it feels like he’s it’s I would say it’s pretty safe to say you can kind of pencil him in to next year’s starting lineup Like he should be on the opening night roster for the San Jose Sharks And if he isn’t um there’s either catalyst or a monumental shift in the personnel on the back end um or something went terribly terribly wrong for Muka Madan So um as for the contract itself at one year $1 million slightly slightly undervalue for what uh Evolving Hockey had projected So they projected most likely he was going to sign a 2-year deal at 1.3 million which would make a lot of sense right you look at Henry Than who last year signed a 2-year deal at 1.1 million Um or signing Mukuman to one-year deal at 1.1 million So slightly slightly undervalue for for Mukadullan uh compared to what you might expect but um this could be potentially setting him up for uh a very nice pay uh payday next year So uh we’re going to talk about that next and kind of talk about what should be expected of Muk Madul in this upcoming season and why he should could be in line for a pretty healthy payday uh next off seasonason So we’ll get to that here just one second The NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlight worthy performances major momentum shifts and can’t miss moments Whether it’s game-winning shot or a breakout player there’s never been a better time to get in on the action FanDuel makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and live with player props performance trends insane game parlays Fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big Um SGA versus Hallebertton Uh sounds like a really fun finals matchup to me Uh so I would just kind of you know try to combine points for those two players and if one good goes off you’re probably having yourself a pretty nice night So if you’re new to FanDuel it’s a perfect time to sign up Head to FanDuel.com and place your first $5 bet If it wins you’ll get $200 in bonus bets Make every moment more with FanDuel official sports betting partner of the NBA All right before we finish up here do of course want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first listen If you haven’t yet perfect time to subscribe uh as we continue to get you guys ready for the off season Uh get right we’ve we got one piece of business done for the offseason so check Um but we got plenty of free agents to sign The Sharks still have uh a lot of cap space to try to uh spend and of course the second overall pick in the draft Uh so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well Okay Um what’s next for Muk Madillan right and we kind of started to touch on it but um Muk Mullan should be projected to be a top four defenseman for the San Jose Sharks next off season Um just as a reminder here are the defenseman currently uh under contract with the Sharks this uh going into the off season right now Uh as you have Mark and his $7 million in the last year of his deal that contract is not going anywhere Mario Ferraro at 3.25 million also in the last year of his deal Timothy Liginrren $3 million also in the last uh year of his deal Vinnie De Ar $2 million AAV also in the last year of his deal Henry Thrun at a million dollars also in the last year of his deal And then Shakir Muk Magulan at a million dollars Of course Yan Ruda UFA and Jack Thompson also in RFA as well But so it’s pretty safe to say for Muk Madull and like you know no matter what else the Sharks do he should be looked at as a projected top four defenseman for the Sharks going into this season and the way that he’s been playing and especially to play in his defensive zone has gotten better and better since he’s gotten to San Jose Um and right you microer has raved about Mach all the time Like Muk Madon is well on his way to kind of solidifying himself as a big piece of the Shark’s future Um the big thing with him right is the health Um you know of course he missed the end of this last season because of an injury Again I’m not holding that against him Um missed the beginning of this season because of an injury missed the end of his the previous season with the Barracuda with an injury So it’s very much if the dude can stay healthy and when he’s on the ice he’s been a very good player for San Jose whether it’s in the Sharks or with the Barracuda Um and if he stays healthy and he gets more comfortable I think we’re going to see that offense start to uptick a little bit here And again I do project the Sharks to be active and aggressive in hopefully trying to overhaul the blue line because it desperately needs it And whether that’s shipping players out or whatever it is um I I feel like Mukban should be a a big piece of what the Sharks are doing with it Um so I expect him to be like his days with the Barracuda are done I expect him to be a top four defenseman for the San Jose Sharks this season and I expect him to play big minutes and hopefully kind of like as we were seeing at the end of the season should be around a 20 minute a night type of player where he’s playing on the penalty kill He’s playing five on five Eden strength and maybe starts to kind of see a little bit ramped up of some of the competition he faces and hopefully finding him the right partner Um but I I do think he’s well on his way to kind of establishing himself as being a legitimate NHL player What does that mean for him for next year and he’s still going to be an RFA And if Mike Greer wants to kind of play the RFA game with him he is more than within his rights to do that But I think if if Mukadan has a season that we’re all kind of expecting right and again 20 minutes a night you maybe you’re going to see hopefully see a little bit of tick offense there But you he just he’s you watch him you’re like that’s an NHL player right he should be looking to sign him for a four or five year deal after that And you kind of point to the Mario Ferrar contract and being like Mario Ferrari contract coming off the books Yes the cap’s going up but would you be you know if Mukuman has a season that we expect a four or fiveyear deal maybe around four three and a half four million for the next couple of seasons I think that’s a very reasonable contract for both Mukadillan who I don’t think is going to be a huge offensive point getter for for the Sharks Um and for San Jose who again is going to have a next year going to have a bajillion dollars in gap space but you you need to start locking up and committing to some of these young players And if Muk Madulan has the season that we expect I think that’s that’s probably the route you’re potentially looking at for him Um and if he doesn’t and he continues to have issues being injured and stuff like that then you can just kind of continue to play the RFA game and sign him to one or two-year contracts and just let things play out until you kind of kick the can down the road until you have to kind of decide what to do with him But I do think this is a really nice uh contract for both parties right for Muka Madan you’re betting on yourself You you know you’re pretty much pencled in to be an NHL player next year right and there’s not a lot of competition right now for you to kind of emerge as one of the best defenseman on the team And yes right we have free agency We don’t know if Sam Dickinson’s going to make the team but still like Muka Madulan should be one of the top four defenseman by the end of the 2526 season And if he’s not I think it’d be fair to say he it’d be a major disappointment for Mukuma McDullan But if he is and again the Sharks have no defenseman under contract uh as of right now um for next season you could be setting yourself up for really really solid payday going forward uh for a guy who has kind of done whatever the Sharks have you know basically everything the Sharks have asked from him And I think his development has has really uh kind of rounded into form uh for them So um yeah I mean I I think this is a win-win situation for everybody and I wouldn’t be surprised if this time next year we are talking about a nice Muk Madullan uh you know extension because I think I think the kid’s good and I think he’s going to be a really solid player and um I yeah I believe in what Mike Gri’s doing and the way he’s building this and I think Muk Madun is going to be around for uh for pretty long time for the Sharks So um that’s going to be it for this episode Uh we’ll be back later tonight uh where we have our 2024 draft uh recap So we look at all the players from the 2024 Sharks draft and kind of recap their season and look ahead for some of these guys Um spoiler there’s a lot of uh CBrini and a lot of Dickinson talk So it’s a pretty good episode if I do say so myself So uh make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well Follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks Follow me on Twitter at blue sky my fryhole Uh till later Bye friends

Sorta thought they'd buy some term. 3 x $3m. Small enough cap hit to make it low risk, large enough to help get to the cap floor. If he's really going to be top 4 d-man — and that's about right, it's a fair deal. Kinda like to see him playing with Thompson, a guy with a bit more offense. Two pretty responsible d-men getting 18-20 minutes a night.
He got better at the end
Well done MG, 1 mill down, 18 to go
i think the assessments of him have been accurate. 4-5D man. i don't expect much more from him. if legitimately settles in as a #4 that's fine.
Such a shame his teammates let him get mangled towards the end
I thought he’d get a little more than that. Prove it deal I guess
