hello and welcome thanks for joining us mlb the show with a good one coming at you it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the St louis Cardinals and now first pitch coming at you right after the break for St louis Cardinals just a little bit away from first pitch and today’s starter Steven Max well he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning which is really good especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two three maybe even four times in a start so just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is we’ll see if it’s that way in this one all right ready to get underway and at the plate for the Dodgers Miguel Rojas [Applause] inside quarter for a strike and this one is off and running first pitch 116 they had a foul ball [Applause] that’s down and in see if you can go upstairs a little bit make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt and that’s in the dirt and it’s two and two and a foul ball he stays alive [Music] the next offering misses three and two now swinging a ground ball sends it to first one up one down time to check out the Dodgers lineup and a big part of it a guy with a great track record Mookie Betts well Boo there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does i mean batting over 400 with runners in scoring position are you kidding me i I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not mookie Betts stands in now and watches strike one one out base is empty swang in a line drive base hit out of the center field just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field so a man aboard Freddy Freeman now at the plate what a season it’s been for him he has supplied a lot of power and that average splits the plate strike one [Applause] come on Steve next offering is fouled back and Freddy takes a K i mean there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does huge movement it’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the at bat alive and now Teoscar Hernandez good power not great in the OBP department that’s a strike betts the runner at first with two gone breaking ball inside and it’s a ball and a strike and that’s downstairs and outside that one fouled off two and two [Music] and there’s a ball 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch and ball four two aboard well interesting he went with the off speed and walked the hitter man you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball maxy at the dish in the dirt and there’s a foul ball [Applause] [Music] yeah that’s fouled off battling here as he fouls it away two aboard two outs sit him down goes down looking well this guy competes hard we see the emotion there i love it great job of getting out of the [Applause] jam back here with my pal Singi and starting this one Yoshobu Yamamoto chris what are you looking for from him well he’s been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it’s the release point maybe it’s the motion but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side lars Nbar the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one [Applause] [Applause] two balls no strikes the count [Applause] outside corner there’s the strike i mean that’s perfect location right on the black i mean over and over again this guy demonstrates the ability to hit those spots that are so tough to do anything with as a hitter and that one handled to first one gone bottom half of the first second here’s a Cardinal lineup now they’re dealing with a top level arm on the mound so this figures to be a tough matchup for them what’s the key to the offense today Singy oh Boo i think when you got a guy that’s this talented on the mound you got to find ways to disrupt his rhythm make him uncomfortable a little bit the guys that can handle the bat and perhaps you know bunt bunt for a base hit get him moving off the mound if you’re in the box and he seems to be just in a flow step out mess up his timing somehow try to get in his head a little bit and then when he does come in the zone you may only get one pitch you better not miss it on the ground to third and it goes just foul and singing as a team you need to make the most of the very few opportunities he’s going to give you right absolutely and and you know if you don’t get to guys like this a lot of times early once they really settle in it’s going to be the later innings that they hand that ball over to a reliever if they do at all very high with that one ball one swang and a miss struck him out two down batting third now for St louis brendan Donovan brendan Donovan and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter swing and a miss he finds himself in a tough situation early just got to try to simplify it take a knock the other way if you can left field confordo sizes this one up and that is that we played an inning no score back here in St louis all set for the start of the inning here’s the center fielder Andy Pahes mats back to work and a breaking ball drops in for a strike well the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count he cannot afford to go deep in the counts doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff so he’s going to have to work efficiently on the ground sends it across to first and quickly one away in the second good fade and sinking action of that change up got that hitter to roll over michael Conorto and here is Michael Conforto here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today right through there for a strike this ball’s chopped on the ground donovan and a couple of quick outs [Applause] batting eight second baseman Tommy Edmond tommy Edmond at the plate come on oh he doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone two [Applause] outs and one fouled off in the air left field down the line and it hops over the wall for an automatic double well there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that you get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty and now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well now at the plate Dalton rushing that one finds the zone 4 and one [Applause] and he takes the strike and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact and now one and two [Applause] edmond at second with two down fights that one away still one and two two balls two strikes strike them out now he breaks his bat and that’s just foul man at second cut on and missed and it’s a strike out and that is the inning one left for LA we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score and we’re back here comes Wilson Contras first baseman Wilson Contrarus contra swings and blasts one well hit left field pulls it in on the warning trap he was all over that first pitch fast and just barely missed it man this guy was ready to hit and now it’s Ivonne Herrera he’s a catcher by trade but the DH here in this one there’s the strike 95 of that one looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one outside that’s a ball gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one well with Simmons it’s not always your standard strike zone boog it kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others but I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent so you got to stay ready up there and it is two and one yeah one of those umpires you just have to know what to expect right exactly swing and a miss two two count they’ll score here in the second [Music] ground ball left side slings to first in time batting six third base here’s Nolan Aronado aronado come on Nolan a little bit high maybe ball one come on looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone but doesn’t seem to be too upset that’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling that’s just a part of pitching that one in there across the [Music] letters to the right side he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it red Birds down quietly we’ll move to the third with no score back here at Bush Stadium now the DH Miguel Rohos miguel Rohos delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 all one’s the count [Applause] ball one there one strike on the ground right side and that chance handled the throw to first leadoff man retired here in the third good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for ball on the ground nice ground out here’s Betts one for one with a single so far sing you talk about a guy that has all the skills the range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays that clips a corner and because of that big power arm he’s able to play a little bit deeper make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner that’s impressive aronado fires across the diamond and Betts is gone now batting first baseman Freddy Freeman freddy Freeman will come up to hit struck out swinging his first time freeman 35 years old and he was a second round pick back in 2007 and there at the knees and it’s two this guy’s not wasting any pitches hitters got to get into swing mode this is a good time to expand the zone throw something maybe down in the dirt [Music] in the air left field down the line that one gets down for a hit makes the turn and heads for second and he’s in there standing up with a two out double good two- strike hitting right there Boo a bit of a lost start for S so that was nicely done to beat the odds i don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it that pitch was inside and he let it get really deep so pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game so runner at second two down and next will be the Dodgers cleanup hitter teascar Hernandez fouled off down the right side the strategy of winning a ball game when you could make that pitcher work a little more expose himself by throwing pitches that could be the key to winning perhaps later on so good job of extending this inning getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up check swing he went too far and it’s a strike no two strikes [Applause] man on second two down pitch misses now one and two keeps the atbat going with a foul ball freeman at second with two down cut out and miss struck him out make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today so one hit is all they get we move on to the bottom of inning number three we’re tied nothing nothing [Applause] and welcome back to the ballpark ready to go for the last half of the inning now it’s Ryan Val trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues and takes low for ball one [Applause] 10 line drive that’s a hit man aboard on the leadoff single batting eight catcher Pedro P next up for the Cardinals I’m so glad Yamamoto made the move to Major League Baseball he’s one of the most decorated pitchers to come out of Japan and finished his Nepon professional baseball career in style runner on the goal cut out and miss throw and they got him well this is a real momentum killer after the leadoff single tried to steal second base on the first pitch defense was all over it nicely done from behind the plate with the catch and throw then a quick tag before he reaches the [Applause] base still tied at zero last of the third highf fly ball near the pole that one is foul thought that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound you execute it just a long strike you go after him and finish him off that missed by a lot yeah the count one and two facing elimination and pitching in game six of the Japan series as Yamamoto pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts and broke the series strikeout record held by Udarish what a way to go out had a good out of there [Applause] there’s a splitter in the dirt swing and a miss rushing gathers throws to first out on the drop third strike two gone that’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across especially in terms of movement i mean that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment if he keeps it down it’s just so tough to put wood on victor Scott next up for the Cardinals swinging a ground ball up the middle whips it to first on the run and that’s a nice play to end the inning nothing doing there for St louis still no score back here in St louis now it’s going to be Max Muny that misses the zone and that is ball one you know these Dodgers as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the zone we’ll see but I think they have to is a 1-1 fought off foul [Music] and that skips into dirt hats and misses it’s a strike out he just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count up and two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone and up next for Los Angeles Andy Pahes pitches in for a strike it’s 0 and one one’s the [Applause] count one down base is empty strike two generally second third time through the lineup you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them looks like he’s doing a nice job of it swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt throw to first and he beats him for out number two that’s a strike out well take a look at the three pitch sequence here pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle and right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off michael Conorto will climb in he’s 0 for one and that misses one and0 gets the outside corner with that one fourth inning underway no score ball in next one in the dirt and he hits a ground ball right side contrarus steps on the bag and he has thrown four shut out innings dodgers down in order and we are still scoreless bottom four and stepping in for the Cardinals Lars Nar Newbar outside ball one swings through that one for strike one i got a ball one [Music] strike eight two one ball two strength [Applause] foul ball still a one and two cal ground ball right side edmonds slings to first one up one down well he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution now the number two hitter Mason Win struck out swinging his first time pitch misses and it’s one to0 ball one no strike [Applause] strike one one and one fast ball for a strike [Music] good eye right there really good take especially with two strikes [Applause] swing and a ball popped up edmond he’s got it there’s two away now batting second base Donovan so two down now and here is Brendan Donovan fly to left his first time chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out cracks his bat and pops him up makes the grab and that’ll end the inning one two three go to Cardinals and we’re still knotted at zero new arm of the mound for the Cardinals Andre Palante well he struggled quite a bit so this is another opportunity to get on the right track he’s given up more than one hit perenning pitch so far this season here’s a switch hitter Tommy Edmond doubled in his first Dodgers second base Tommy Edmond first offering and it just misses movement in the bullpen number 35 preparing to come on if needed [Music] and another ball yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits and that’s way high and now 3 and 0 singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value absolutely if he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story but yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100% yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end now that catcher and here’s the catcher Dalton rushing struck out swinging his first time lewis fouled off left side one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a played appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the fifth breaks his bat and pops pitching is getting ahead in the count and as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding the zone hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout one down base is empty swing and a high-fly ball right field hernandez calls it in two away now batting third base so now it’s Dolan Aronado 0 for one so far ball one no strikes bounce to the right Edmond and the inning is over and down in order go the Cardinals sixth inning coming up still nothing on the scoreboard back here in St louis all right we go to the top half of inning number six here is Freddy Freeman up and in and that’s ball one activity in the bullpen phil Mod up and loosening in the pen romero the power lefty up as well one and0 to Freddy Freeman that’s ball to right through there for a strike that just misses and that’s ball three called strike right there fouled off and they’ll do it again foul we’ll see another payoff pitch and he couldn’t hold back he’s right up on strikes not a bad one here’s Tioscar Hernandez scoreless here but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals that one down the line and foul ball hernandez in his eighth season 32 years old he joined the team as a free agent that one missed one ball one strike [Music] the 1-1 is fouled off all tied up and we’re in the top half of the six hammers that one deep left field and forget it he’ll circle the bases his 11th of the year and they grant the lead it’s one- nothing that’s a fun way to take the lead just hit one out of the park so many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it so one out nobody on max Muny steps to the plate for the Dodgers and first offering is fouled [Applause] off on the corner for a strike next offering is down low at a count one and two [Applause] nope outside fast ball is outside got him swinging third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush he just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there just one of those days but when you’re still winning the ball game at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W andy Pahes will hit next his home and away splits [Applause] there and that one wrapped foul inside corner and that’s called a strike elbow two strikes lays out but he can’t squeeze it now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag he keeps his composure and they get the out so Scott this guy can absolutely fly i think one of the faster players in baseball that misses and that’s ball one pretty frugal guy he is very efficient with the pitch count in this one [Applause] swing and a miss strike one and it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast ball excellent slider but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there and he lays down a punt tries the bare hand and it gets by him safe at first no play we’ll see how they score this maybe a little small ball is exactly what the doctor ordered to rev up this offense and they’ve been pretty quiet all game so maybe this wakes him up a bit and helps them get on the board so the lineup flips over lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals has grounded out a couple of times that’s off the inside corner one and0 [Music] two outs tapped at the plate but it’s a foul ball [Music] lake with the swing there man that’s just a nasty splitter bottom falls out of it you don’t see a lot of guys throw that these days but I tell you what he’s got a good one over the first and he’s saved [Applause] and now the count is even gets a piece there we’ll do it again with the got to do his best to keep the score right where it is well one game the batter will be Michael Conoro he’s grounded out a couple of times and ball one line drive and it’s caught for the That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well i know it didn’t produce a hit but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate yeah here comes Tommy Edmond [Applause] first pitch swinging oh and one hit hard on the ground to the right side and foul ball that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much count [Music] comes the 2-2 on the outside corner got him looking well he throws him with a great fast right on the corner it’s kind of like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the offering is in for a strike he doesn’t seem to like to pitch up hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now i think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there that one misses one and and the count is three and one oh I’m impressed with that challenge pitch right there even with this slim lead this guy’s not afraid to go right after these hitters fast ball for a strike at 95 getting a little frustrated with the strike zone [Applause] in the air left field down the line and that drops foul definitely got the hitter conscious of the push inside i really think the outer half first in time that was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base well there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there nice job of the pitcher to bear down make the pitch get the pretty much just a textbook double into the gap and when you can drop one in there between the outfielders you know you’re making the turn at first just an excellent swing and now it’s Bookie Betts one for three just missed the one runner in scoring position nobody out and we’re in the top of the eighth late swing fouled off [Music] that’s ball three squirts away a little bit three balls one outs swing and a miss he was late strike two no balls two strikes inside gets out of the way down the line nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball strike him out and that’s through this swing it’s a strike out so far just one of those days for this lineup you get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strike out right there just pours water on the fire you look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something pick up his teammate and his club and next will be the cleanup hitter Tay Oscar Hernandez his homer earlier is responsible for the only runs they scored in this one yeah forget small ball they’re kind of living and dying by the long ball so far in this one this one popped up foul ground first base side contraras under it and he’s got it two [Applause] away here’s Max Muny 0 for three in this one now look out here he’s going to come up ready to swing in this situation and that one gets past the catcher lead runner moves up to third but no movement from the runner at first swings through that one out in front that time he’s had a tough day at the plate three strikeouts already it’s hard not to think negative but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play [Applause] and a count one and two [Applause] [Applause] and that’s downed away [Applause] and now it’s three and two and this a good example of the type of at bat that Muny can deliver andy Pahz up next for the Dodgers two on two outs and that one is lifted in the air the lead sizing this one up makes the grab and that’s the third out dodgers strand a couple but they’re on top one- nothing back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth anthony Bond well he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes he’s definitely struggled with free passes this year well one-run game here’s the Cardinal D ivon Herrera herrera inside and that is ball one good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with you’re better off taking that pitch [Music] and that’s off the inside edge two and0 the Dodgers bullpen with some action tanner Scott the left-hander is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go [Applause] next pitch is outside always feel like he’s frustrated a little bit he wants to be challenged nolan Aronado in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact [Applause] here and that is out of play little early on that fast ball i’m sure the pitcher taking a note look for an offspe pitch on this next one swings through that one for strike two it’s a hitter you don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2 if he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1 he’ll do it again 3-2 ripped on a line there there’s one away man that’s so frustrating you hit the ball hard you understand the situation you want to get on base and try to score that tight run but no reward right there and just going to have to sit on it [Applause] rip to short throw on to Freeman and that quickly two away that play won’t be trending on social media later on but it’s still important to execute it to perfection this game is a lot harder than it looks partner so digging in Ryan Valade corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases that misses ball one boo he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away two outs next pitch in for a strike and now it’s even one and one and that one missing low swing and a ground ball out to short bet swifts it to first three up three down inning over nothing doing there for St louis still behind by a count of one to nothing we’re back it’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound phil M the offense will need to be ready for the breaking stuff he’s got a great curveball phil M [Applause] so digging in Andy Pah 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout [Applause] first pitch just misses action in the St louis bullpen john King the left-hander up and throwing ley getting loose as well [Applause] no [Applause] inside on the ground right side donovan and it gets by him and it’s in time it wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today but they still get the out and next for LA Michael [Applause] Conforto and first offering is fouled off late swing fouled to the left one down base is empty now a pop up on the [Applause] infield pah makes the catch and there’s two away that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up tommy two out space is empty tommy Edmond getting ready to hit [Applause] swinging a foul straight [Applause] back highf fly ball on that one curling foul down the right side [Applause] [Applause] oh great grab on the dive throws from the seat of his pants and that’s a great play for the out well that right there was all pre- pitch positioning put himself in the perfect spot to make a great play back now and on the mound the closer Tanner Scott he’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all so we’ll see how he does here pedro Pah digs in now and that’s in for a strike and it’s 0 and one well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit [Applause] that one not close and it’s one and two [Applause] 99 miles per hour to finish him off well that right there is what you want to see out of your closer come in and close the door cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game tell you what that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs yeah that’s fouled off [Applause] 01 now slashed foul down the right side that’ll hook off into the seats a oneun lead and the home team trying to pull it out swing and a miss that’s a strike out cardinals now with just one out remaining this is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer come in and just destroy all hope first two batters two strikeouts see if he can strike out the side so they’re down to their final out lars Newbar next up for the Cardinals that clips the corner all one’s account two down on they’re down to their final strike all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls but at this point he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone scott is just one strike away got him and that’s the ball game well this one was all about the pitching and defense outstanding job of the pitchers really attacking hitters trusting what the catcher was putting down and trusting the players standing behind him to make the plays defensively sometimes you want to see a high-scoring game but sometimes you can appreciate the artistic beauty of what these
