Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Don Nelson makes a point that he’s wearing Luka 4s in protest of the team’s decision to trade Doncic: “I think it was a tremendous mistake for the Dallas franchise to trade him — and I want everybody to know that.”

It’s kinda insane to me how the Mavs get to directly transition from drafting Dirk Nowitzki to Luka Doncic to Cooper Flagg with the biggest gap being 2 months while a lot of franchises in the league haven’t had a single player that talented even ever wear their jersey in entire decades of their existence.

  22. The fact that Nico still hasn’t been fired yet and probably won’t be this offseason makes it impossible for me to have any real hope for this franchise even with Flagg coming in. Just a generational level of stupidity in that front office.

  24. This is the same guy who left Dallas pretty much because Mark Cuban didn’t match Steve Nash’s offer (he left the following year, but he’s said that’s why). Must be frustrating for him to see history repeating itself.

    Also, I’m now realizing that he hasn’t been in the league in 15 years, and there’s probably a decent chunk of people on here who don’t realize how awesome and ahead of his time Nellie was. He turned around Milwaukee after Kareem left. He was at the helm of the Run-TMC Warriors. He traded for Dirk and Nash and built the offense around them. He coached the We Believe 8-seed Warriors who upset the #1 seed Mavericks. Absolute legend.

  27. Luka perfectly fit into the Nelson legacy of getting and developing European superstars that would identify with the local city. It’s still so ridiculous. Luka fell into their lap, they achieved perfect continuity in branding and marketing. 

    The shoe salesman just threw all of that away to chase AAU kids.

  29. Don Nelson is the biggest reason I’m a Warriors fan. His basketball philosophy lines up with the far I’ve watched all my life. Offense matters more than defense. Defense is making your opponent take shots with their worst shooters. Defense is allowing a bad shooter to keep shooting even if he makes his first couple. Fast breaks at any opportunity.

And didn’t Rick Carlisle walk away from the Mavs with Luka in his prime? Why did he do that? Funny how the people who know Luka best don’t want anything to do with him.

  39. Yes but it wasn’t a mistake for Adam Silver. He needed the Lakers to have Luka and so that is where he was going to go.

    And so, it was just luck that Dallas got Cooper Flagg?

  40. Not saying it doesn’t make sense, but wtf is it gonna do? It already happened, the NBA’s not gonna veto it at this point. The Mavs still have a good roster and the #1 pick (Cooper Flagg). I feel like you just gotta focus on the new era at this point.
