Make it your first listen Tell your friends to do the same as Lockdown Blazers your team every day In today’s program we’re going to talk about two new assistant coaches added to Chanty Bilip staff Give you a little background on Chago Splitter and Patrick St Andrews who have joined reportedly and as uh reported elsewhere and confirmed here by the good folks at Lockdown Blazers Um little independent confirmation for you for for my journalistic background Um uh two new hires Chago Splitter Patrick St Andrews Uh the Philips staff appears to be finalized We’ll get to know both of those gentlemen and we will talk about uh talk about sort of their resumes leading up to this and what they could potentially bring to the Blazers Let’s start with the name you know first Although I think in the grand scheme of coaching uh Chicago Splitter is probably a little has a little less shiny of a resume or at least a little less um uh slight less experience like front of the bench doing NBA coaching type of things You remember Chago Splitter who played for the San Antonio Spurs from 2010 up into the 2014 2015 season a part of the 2014 championship team a part of the 2013 runner-up team famously got blocked at the rim one time by LeBron James Uh he was like he was darn good on those on those Spurs teams Like he was he was he’s a really he’s a really good player you know as many international players do Like he turned pro in in 2000 and spent uh you know almost a decade getting older and growing up in the professional ranks playing professionally in Brazil as well as Spain um was a very good player in the ACB league before coming over to uh before coming over to the NBA and then was like really really freaking helpful on the Spurs like those you know uh those 2013 2014 teams he started 58 and and then 50 games backtoback like he was a he was a big minute player on on the teams that were very good uh for the Spurs and then his the end of his his career he plays in Atlanta and then apparently at least according to basketball reference he played eight games over the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2016 2017 season I do not remember that th those eight games those um that half hour of basketball he played for the Sixers in 2016 That one missed me I did not know Choco uh got down like that in Philly Uh this news first reported by uh Kemma Ducas who’s a reporter uh who covers covers your league Um confirmed a couple places locally including as I said here by Locked on Blazers I can indeed confirm that that the Chiago Splitter is going to join the staff Uh but the the the journalist in me the former newspaper man in me wants to give credit to who who had it first Uh K Lucas uh was was the first to report it So Chosplitter’s career playing career ends in 2017 Uh and then in 2019 he’s hired to be a pro scout by the Brooklyn Nets He spends that season 201920 of course cut short by COVID and um the world is changing around us Uh but he he spent that season as a pro scout The following year um in 2020 2021 that season uh he’s hired for like promoted from pro scout to assistant coach with um a player development focus So he’s like a behind the bench PD guy um player development workout guy uh on on with the Nets So he spends three years there 2020 and 2021 the following season 2122 and the and the season after that 22 23 Uh then from there he is hired by Eime Udoka in the 23-24 season Of course Chago Splitter with those Spurs connections Eudoka with those Spurs connections This is kind of the a branch of the Greg Papovic coaching tree of sorts Uh in fact uh Udoka was an assistant on the Brooklyn Nets in 2020 2021 the first year that Chago was uh was promoted to the player development role So they had coached together with the Nets Then eventually Splitter gets hired uh on on Udoka’s staff in for the 23 24 season in a similar role like in a similar player development role Uh I read an article today about him working with Alan Shenon Um obviously like I think we generally assume like big man in the league works with bigs on the team I think that is usually how it works although I don’t think it’s necessarily universal Uh cuz sometimes you’ll see like old old head NBA point guards working with uh working with wings and stuff in the league Um but you know Chugplitter’s whatever 611 seven feet tall Um he’s he’s he can he can certainly uh be a fimile and gives some tips to other bigs Although his role in the Blazers will remain to be seen but in certainly in Houston that was part of his role was working with Shenon He spends that season 23 24 in Houston on uh real quick as an aside heavy Portland ties on the Udoka staff Always have been right like Udoka is a Portland guy and those he kisses Portland people Ben Sullivan is a Portland guy uh was on the staff Mike Moser is a Portland guy who was on the staff Gary Jackson is a Portland guy was on the staff And Chago Splitter got a little taste He got a little taste of what Portland hoops is like from Jefferson High’s own Emma Udoka and he said “I got I got to I got to get involved with this professional basketball in the Northwest.” Actually I don’t think that had anything to do with it It was probably the paycheck But in any case um honorary Portlander for that year for that year in Houston Following the year in Houston Chicago Splitter was hired by Paris Basketball the uh basketball team that that I believe made it to Euro League owned by David Khan Uh speaking of Portland Connections let’s go Uh David Khan uh who who owns Paris basketball That of course is Paris basketball That was the uh where Tuomas Eelo who is now the head coach of the Grizzlies but was like a high-profile assistant added to the Grizzlies and then uh later later promoted to head coach when they fired Taylor Jenkins like that that’s where Iselo was prior to prior to his uh NBA stint So like clearly Paris basketball was a like a place where people are keeping an eye on as I understand it um they were extremely good on offense like an elite offensive team under Eelo a little bit worse but still pretty darn good um with Splitter and then they were going to lose a bunch of their talent this year Uh shout out to TJ Schwarz moving on Um some someone I know about thanks to past guest Seth Allen But um like so so Splitter you know was he was maybe going to coach a worse team by virtue of how uh basketball in in other countries professional basketball in other countries works but he instead is moving to the Blazers He hasn’t had like a true assistant coach role He has had these player development positions and I would assume he would work a similar one with the Blazers although I was unable to confirm that during my reporting Um I I I think we’re going to get f like this hasn’t been officially announced by the team reported some other places and again confirmed here but like I think the Blazer are going to officially announce this later this week um at some point either either as you’re listening to this on Monday or or perhaps later in the week but you were listening to Monday June 9th show welcome back Blazers podcast all summer long um but they’ll they will make it official official and perhaps then we’ll have some clarity over roles and who and who is where but Splitter has mostly been during his you know a pro scout and then four seasons as a player development coach in the league he’s mostly done that work he does have experience right Like he brings you know he brings a a playing career obviously before he got to the league but he but uh you know six seven seasons depending on how you want to count that Philly season uh that Philly stint like six seven seasons in the league Um obviously some really high level moments like he was very good on the Spurs Don’t get it twisted He might not have like sexy counting numbers but he’s very good on the Spurs Um but like he brings that experience as a player He’s and and he’s had that background four seasons as player development in in the league So you know I think that’s likely what his role will continue to be Albeit if he was like wooed out of um out of a job in Europe We’ll see like kind of what what he was promised But but I think that’s the name you know is Chuggle Splitter The name I know I was like “Oh cool Chuggle Splitter Where’s Fabricio Berto at Like where where’s where’s Nazi Muhammad Uh where’s Dwan Blair Let’s get the whole let’s get the whole gang here.” No Um certainly the name I know but not as um not as shiny a or as or as well-rounded a resume as the other player or the other person the other coach the Blazers hired That’s Patrick St Andrews who was uh most recently with the Memphis Grizzlies albeit um hired from the unemployment line because he was fired along with Taylor Jenkins at with about three weeks left in the regular season Let’s get to know Patrick St Andrews or Saint as they called him in Memphis as I understand it Join me in that second segment and we will do just that First though I want to tell you about Monarch Money Look do you ever do you ever check your bank account or or just your finances at large and think 50% off your first year That’s monarchoney.com and the code is locked on NBA for half off your first [Music] year All right so we talk chugosplitter The name you know the name that you might not know is Patrick St Andrews who joins the Blazers most recently of the Memphis Grizzlies an assistant a front of the bench assistant on Taylor Jenkins staff who was let go or to put it a little more bluntly fired along with Taylor Jenkins with like three weeks left in the regular season when the Grizzlies made an abrupt shift to install to Amaselo and and fired some Jenkins along with some assistance along the way But St Andrews is um or Saint as they call him I read a story in the Commercial Appeal by locked on Grizzlies host Michael Cole where where the Grizzlies players were calling him Saint I wonder if that nickname will travel with him But Saint began his coaching career St Andrews in 2013 with the Hawks He was a uh he was a seasonal assistant basically like an intern with the basketball op staff and then he moved to assistant video coordinator the following season in 20145 and then he was promoted to head video coordinator in 201617 and then to an assistant coach in 2017 uh for the 2017 2018 season So like this is a dude who grinded for four years as like someone to even get a shot and then he joins the 2017 2018 Hawks as part of Mike Budenhoer’s staff Um and he is like Mike Budenhozer is a Greg Papovich tree right Like he’s part of the Greg Papovich tree He started he was an assistant coach on the Spurs for a couple decades starting in 1996 until until he ended up with um until he ended up in Atlanta Uh Taylor Jenkins also part of the the Spurs tree He he was uh head coach in the G-League as well But like um so the Blazers uh either depending on how you want to look at it they hired two gentlemen who are either from the Greg Papovich tree or they added a former Spur and someone who worked under Mike Budenholzer for several years Um the trees pop has been in the league a long time The trees have a lot of branches but certainly uh Benhozer and Taylor Jenkins are are certainly part of of like the sort of larger Papovic uh diaspora across the league So Patrick St Andrews works for assistant coach for the Hawks for the 201718 season Then Mike Budenhozer gets hired uh to coach the Bucks and he joins Benhoer with the Bucks Um he he he moves along right along with them from 2018 uh through their championship run in 2021 He was credited with uh being a big part of the sort of con uh constructing orchestrating organizing the Bucks offense during the during the championship uh during the championship campaign And then when Bnolder was eventually fired in 2023 that’s what happens when coaches get fired is their coaching staff gets fired along with him and St Andrews uh was out of work But he gets hired by Taylor Jenkins in Memphis for the 2324 season And this is you know his NBA career He’s now basically in 2324 a decade into chasing the NBA dream uh in various capacities as as a coach and and and uh video coordinator which is the path to being a coach to be sure for for almost everyone So you know Jenkins was actually you know he was on the Hawk staff in 2017 18 when when uh when St Andrews was there He was on the Buck staff initially in in 2018 uh when when Budner moved over He brought St Andrews and he brought and he brought Taylor Jenkins with him So Jiggins had worked closely with St Andrews and said “Okay I’m going to hire you.” And when he was hired in initially in in like the early stages of of October of 2023 during the preseason the the the Grizzlies pointed to him There’s again a story in the commercial appeal by Michael Cole um host of Locked on Grizzlies like pointed to specifically to Patrick St Andrews as this is the guy who’s going to sort of revamp our offense Of course the Grizzlies went even further the following year and hired more folks to sort of revamp the offense beyond that but initially that was what St Andrews was sort of tasked with like this is a guy who’s like the architect or at least the the offensive coordinator largely charged with offensive coordinating in 2021 for a championship level team with with the Bucks Then this next step is like okay Taylor Jenkins says we need to juice our offense and be better The year he got hired was a mess for the Grizzlies job suspensions and injuries and kind of just had like a learning year And then this year like the Grizzlies they hired some other folks including including Noah Lar Ro who was kind of the architect of like the no ball screen stuff uh that the Grizzlies were running and was really popular until everyone got fired and they they said you know what let’s just get two Mazizelo in here and run like spread pick and roll cuz like sure why not Um so I like I think u this is what you’re getting with St Andrews is someone who has been in the league a long time Co-signed by experienced coaches right Uh co-signed by I Taylor Jenkins is the winningest coach in in Grizzlies history Mike Budnzer is clearly a great coach one of the best coaches of the last decade in the NBA without a doubt even if he’s had some um shortcomings Like he makes teams better Look at what he did in Atlanta and Milwaukee He makes teams better Obviously he had a stinker in Phoenix this year Um but like it is what it is Every situation is not perfect Even good coaches have bad seasons etc etc Um but like you know he’s he has this experience working in the league like I said has has been an has been an assistant coach since 2017 but has been in the league for for over a decade and mostly seems to have that offensive background I think that’s kind of what you want kind of what you’re looking for with with these Blazer with this hire Um you know I I think Chris Fleming who was one of the player one of the coaches that was let go by the Blazers this offseason he was kind of credited with being like “Oh this is the creative offensive player development guy that has was like the was part of the Kenny Atkinson staffs and then eventually in Chicago as part of these like valuable staff member valuable veteran veteran assistant coach.” This is kind of what St Andrews is is like he’s that type of fill-in type of not I’m not saying they’re the same coach by any means What I’m saying is like a role that left was sort of an offensive mind experience coach and the Blazers have or have now hired offensive mind experience assistant uh to fill in that role As I mentioned my guess is Chago Splitter is behind the bench and I would assume that St Andrews was hired to be a front of the bench guy I assume he will you will see him up front Um whether he has clipboard duties or whatever remains to be seen but I that is my assumption with him Um you know he’s it’s hard to know with coaching and I’ll talk about this more to close the show in a second but like it’s hard to know with coaching but this you know grinded to get a get an opportunity has been co-signed by you know Mike Budner and Taylor Jenkins two coaches that are that are that I think are it’s just straight up good very good coaches Um you know and is and is out of the league due to the sort of weird out you know out of a job due to like the weird churn of of NBA coaching cycles Um I think this is without knowing how it all works I think this is like the type of resume as I mentioned in some past hires the type of resume that is appealing right Experience fits a specific need The Blazers need to get a little bit better on offense Some of that is talent I would say the vast majority of that is they need to become more talented on offense But having new fresh way to look at improving an offense that was certainly the weak part of the team uh is is valuable And this is someone who’s been charged with doing that at a championship level charged with doing that with in in in another setting in Memphis And now we’ll have that opportunity I assume although we’ll have to figure out how it all works Um I would assume a similar opportunity now with uh the Trailblazers Let’s talk about the finalized coaching coaching uh roster the finalized coaching staff for Bill That’s what we’ll do to close the show Who all is in the boat Let’s talk about who’s left and who’s going to be sitting where Join me in that second segment won’t you Excuse me the third segment We’ll close the show with it First though I want to tell you about Door Dash Look we’re in the NBA Finals I’m recording this prior to game two You’re probably listening to this And you are still listening to Locked on Blazers So two new coaches in Chicago Splitter who I assume’s coming in player development role Um I didn’t mention this in the second in the in the second segment I apologize I I made a big thing about giving credit and then I totally spaced on it I scrolled too far down in my notes It happens Uh but first I believe and I might be wrong about this but I believe first reported by Danny Morang of of 1080 the fan that that uh St Andrews was joining the staff uh for the Blazers later independently confirmed by locked on Blazers but yeah sorry um Danny gets credit for that one He he had it Um the the old school journalist in me wants to credit who had it first Um I think in general you dear listener don’t give a hoot Okay speaking about stuff you might give a hoot about Uh let’s talk about who’s on the Blazers staff So it was reported by Michael Scott that the Blazers are like retaining some assistance including Nate Bjorkrren and Ronnie Burrell uh and their analytics coach a behind the bench guy Jacob Muolim and uh those so those holdovers are there Mark Tindle is still there who was who is a behind the bench player development assistant who is who’s the last remaining member of of Bilips’s initial staff from the 2021 season the the lone remaining uh coach on the staff is Mark Tindle He’s had a full coaching turnover now heading in to year five I don’t think that’s like wholly uncommon but it is somewhat notable Um because like typically if you were to get a new contract um it would be because you know you know obviously some some some of his coaches left like Steve Hel to get new jobs etc etc but like uh you know Bilips Bilips has had a full full co full coaching staff turnover and maintained his job as they move forward I think um in general I think adding Nate Bjorkrren to the staff seemed to help Um you know the Blazers took a big step on defense last year probably in large part because they had better defensive players but you know um they Roy Rogers who they let go was the sort of was the chief architect defensive coordinator type So we’ll see who steps into that role Uh but they so they will they will have to make some decisions Some of those decisions is just who sits on the bench because when they when they did when Chris Flem Fleming and Mark and excuse me when Chris Fleming and Roy Rogers were let go the Blazers lost two veteran assistants who sit on the front of the bench And the front of the bench stuff maybe doesn’t matter to sort of um your viewing experience necessarily of the team but it is like the hierarchy of coaching Like it is like who’s next in line for you know who gets paid more and like who’s next in line for other jobs across the league and the Blazers needed to fill two front of the bench roles and uh and and a and a role behind the bench uh when uh when they made some some changes You will recall that on Friday’s program I mentioned that the Blazers had added former Stockton Kings head coach that’s in the GLeague uh Quinton Crawford who’s worked in league uh in in in various places basically for Frank Vogle in various stops uh o over the last five years Uh I would assume Crawford fills in a um fills in a player a player development role behind the bench I would assume Chago Splitter um fills in a player development role behind the bench That would be my guess They’ll join Gil Abraham and Pueter in those in those behind the behind the bench uh positions Nate Burkin is is like the effectively the lead assistant although I don’t know that his title is is lead assistant or associate head coach but he is certainly effectively and very obviously the lead assistant He’ll maintain that spot So who sits on the front of the bench who joins them with those two spots My guess is it’ll be Patrick St Andrews who was just who was just hired Um you know he’s he’s had that role sitting on the bench with with Memphis I think he wouldn’t you know he wouldn’t take a a job that was that big of a step down I imagine that you pay him to do something similar Also if like he’s the offensive coordinator obviously he’s going to sit on the front of the bench Um the offensive coordinator stuff is speculation based on his prior roles but that would be my guess You hire people to do what they’re best at That is how that is generally how hiring works at good companies You you dear listener may have worked for some bad companies like I have over the years uh where you are often hired to do something you were not particularly good at or tasked with uh giving tasked with doing something that you are maybe not best at but it but well-run companies they put their put their folks in places to succeed so you assume St Andrews place to succeed offensive mind run the offense That would mean the Blazers are likely unless Splitter surprisingly is is in front of the bench to promote someone And my assumption is that Jonah Hersku will be promoted to the front of the bench This is an educated guess and I will note recently I’ve gone like I’ve really had a poor showing maybe in the roughly a third of these 33% roughly with my educated guesses I’ve been getting a lot of them wrong but I bet this is right Uh so I assume the front of the bench coaches next season will be Nate Bjorkrren there’ll be Jonah Hersku and they’ll be Patrick St Andrews And then behind the bench uh you will get Mark Tindle you’ll get Ronnie Burrell you’ll get Quinton Crawford and Pujetta and Gil Abraham Uh and uh and yes and Quinn Crawford the recently hired Quinn Crawford I believe I said his name now four times I think that’s the staff that looks finalized to me There aren’t rules about this like you can add more folks but if you just look at the size of the staff they carried last year and the size of the staff they currently have it would track that this is it This is the full bench Um I’ll mention this as I mention every time there’s a hiring of sorts I do think coaching is important I don’t think it’s nearly as important as talent Talent wins in the league but it’s undeniable that coaching is a big a big part of this And I think assistant coaching like the quality of a staff is a really important variable that is largely unknowable from the outside Even even the beat beat guys who are as close to the team as possible largely unknowable Um you know some people do a better job maybe reporting it than others but like I I think it is hard to know exactly the um the quality in real time of an of an assistant coaching staff And yet I think it is undeniably a huge huge variable in the quality of the team because um it’s not only just like the messaging from here’s what we want to do on down as you work with players individually It’s understanding like certain assistant coaches who do better with certain personality types and certain egos and all those things Players who do well with veterans players who do wells with you know who do well with young players who need a little more guidance etc etc Like there is a real art to building a good coaching staff Do I know whether this is a good coaching staff I don’t I don’t I can read you you know I’m pretty good at research I’m pretty good at reading Wikipedia I’m pretty good at um you know searching the maybe major newspapers for stories of how it all works right But the the actual way that this goes from you know uh pallet to canvas is pretty hard to see from my perspective I think in general these are you know you want to hire guys with like some experience in the league doing the job and acumen that fits a specific need Chicago Splitter has experience doing the specific job he’s likely hired for Patrick St Andrew seems to have acumen in the in the skill that you need Uh guiding an offense making the offense a little more quality a little more creative a little smarter a little better In general these seem to check the boxes how how cleanly they check the boxes remains to be seen and quite frankly might be unknowable during the entire run of it But I I do think you know if you’re just looking on paper these seem like good good hires on paper right This seems like these seems like valuable hires on paper We shall see because uh it is hard to know And again like even if you get the coaching staff a million% correct to me it’s something like 25 or 30% of the equation uh talent wins in the league But you don’t the Blazers aren’t necessarily going to like be a team that like if they don’t make the playoffs they had a bad season The point of hiring good coaching staff so you’re playing with purpose and playing with with like a real direction and I and like identity If this staff coaches a team that wins you know 29 games but they have like obvious direction and identity I think you’ll feel really good about it Uh but again from here in early June the first you know I guess the second week of June now as I’m recording this do I have confidence on what it will end up looking like Not necessarily But I I think um I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong about any of these hires So there’s no reason for now to be anything but optimistic of what it looks like going forward That is going to do it for today’s show Come back for four more the rest of the week and try to nail down a couple draft interviews We will talk all things NBA draft as we inch closer less than three weeks away from draft night Uh we’ll do what we do 5 days a week where every podcast also on YouTube Tell your friends about the program I appreciate you listening I’ll talk to you soon

The Trail Blazers coaching staff appears finalized for the 2025-26 season after two recent hires. Let’s get to know Patrick St. Andrews and Tiago Splitter.

  1. Another sign that the Blazers are on the rise to being playoff contenders. With Splitter, it makes you wonder if they are looking at a young player out of the Euro-leagues. Either way, Clingan will get some lessons in how to score in the post and what kind of fitness is required to get more minutes. The "Saint" is a good pickup for getting more scoring schemes. Go Blazers.

  2. It's gonna feel weird to have Tiago on our bench given how long he was a staple of SA's as a player and coach. I really think he's gonna have a notable impact going forward for sure.
